The opportunity to live far from city lights but within a drive of a few hours of large metro areas is also attracting new residents. Night in some parts of West Virginia is so star-spangled that it may seem pre-industrial, says astronomer David Buhrman, who tours the region with telescopes, leading educational programs and advocating for the value of starlight. Up to two thirds of Marshall's 12,019 students identify as first gen, which means coming from a family where neither parent completed a four year degree.   Among Marshall's many first gen support initiatives is a first generation directory, listing many faculty and staff who were first gen students.  Dr. Marybeth Beller is on that first gen faculty list. The political science professor got emotional remembering her single mother, working as an office secretary, acting upon her vow to ensure her three daughters went to college. Beller said today's Marshall's first gen students have something she somewhat lacked in school: a vast and varied support network. “It is absolutely amazing to me to learn about the wealth of opportunities that we have in terms of student services, not just in tutoring, but in support services to help guide our students and show them the ropes,” she said. Mary welcomes Dr. Danny Faulkner of Answers in Genesis to discuss the heavens and all that is in them. The Psalmist tells us that they declare the glory of God - and the God Who made them lives in the believer.  How can that not inspire awe all by itself? As a culture, going from the beginnings of the space race in the 1960s to today's complex telescopic arrays and the Hubble, we know more than ever about the heavens, vast and boundless. Looking up at the night sky, humans have been doing that from our own beginnings,  this connects us all across the millennia. Today we discuss astronomy, the science - what is it, how does it differ from other sciences? The Bible refers to the heavens over 700 times, so there should be no question as to how they came about, but the complexity, that's an endless subject. Auroras, nebula, galaxies and novas describe things and power far beyond our human comprehension. More glory than we can even consider, but we will try in this fascinating hour with Dr. Faulkner. Dr. Danny Faulkner holds an MS in physics from Clemson University, an MA and a PhD in astronomy from Indiana University, and he taught at the University of South Carolina—Lancaster for over 26 years. He has published over 100 papers in various journals. He works as a researcher, author, and speaker for Answers in Genesis. He also hosts Ark Encounter trips down to Red River Gorge (in eastern Kentucky), and Stargazer's Nights (at the Johnson Observatory); he also hosts Astronomy Live programs, and “The Skies Proclaim His Handiwork” workshops at the Creation Museum. NASA recently announced they're preparing to send humans to Mars as early as 2035. It'll be a huge undertaking that will require a big budget and massive collective effort. But Joel Levine is focused more on the small stuff. He's working with NASA on sterilization methods to prevent the cross-contamination of microbes between Earth and Mars. And: It's around a 7 month trip to go from Earth to Mars. That's a long time to be in outer space. And we're just now learning how it'll affect the body.
