Join me as I make the case for these frameworks to be more than mere pathways to special education, advocating for a synergistic relationship where shared insights and strategies lead to student success. With a focus on the parallels between MTSS and special education, I call attention to the importance of data-driven decisions, periodic reviews, and targeted goals, all crucial for meaningful progress. It's a mission to ensure that the commitment schools make to support student learning is not just a promise, but a practice. This conversation is an urgent one, with implications that reach far beyond individual classrooms. As the new year unfolds, it's time to rethink our approach to educational support, aiming for consistency and resource-sharing that can uplift both MTSS and special education. By exploring interventions like the Orton-Gillingham approach, which may serve to elevate all students, we can begin to address the deep-seated issues that leave too many students lagging in basic skills. I'm calling for a year of innovation to combat teacher burnout and reverse the exodus from this critical profession, crafting an educational experience that's as fulfilling for educators as it is for students. Tune in for a candid discussion about shaping an educational future where every learner is equipped for success.Subscribe & Review in iTunesAre you subscribed to my podcast? I'm thrilled to share with you the latest episode of our podcast, where we had the pleasure of hosting Tobie Spears, the founder and director of the nonprofit Be Humanitarian. Their mission:  To live a life full of meaningful work, building cherished connections, healing sorrows, sprinkling smiles, and sharing hope. Tobie's passion for making a difference is truly inspiring, and her story resonated deeply with me, given my personal connections to Latin America. Here are some key takeaways from our conversation:The Birth of Be Humanitarian: Tobie's journey to Guatemala began with a sense of adventure and a desire to experience something new. She found a community in need and a calling to make a difference. Her organization now provides meals, educational support, and income opportunities to a remote Guatemalan community. The Impact: Be Humanitarian started small, but its impact has been profound. From providing breakfast three days a week to needy children, they now serve thousands of monthly meals. During the pandemic, they even provided dinner boxes, demonstrating their commitment to meeting basic needs.Empowerment and Collaboration: Tobie's vision goes beyond charity. She aims to empower the local people to create a sustainable system for themselves. The organization prioritizes collaboration and involvement from the community, ensuring that the parents and children in their program have a say in how things are done. The Challenges: Guatemala is one of the most malnourished countries in the world, with a stark divide between the wealthy and the impoverished. Tobie and I discussed the financial challenges families face and the difficult choices they have to make between basic needs like food and education.Service Vacations: Be Humanitarian offers unique adventures and service vacations. These trips are humanitarian-based and include activities like fair trade education and hands-on service in the community. It's a different kind of vacation that leaves a lasting impact on both the participants and the community.Tobie's story is a testament to the power of compassion and the difference one person can make. I hope you'll join me in supporting Be Humanitarian's mission and consider tuning in to our podcast to hear more about Tobie's incredible journey.Remember, even a small contribution can make a big difference. As Tobie shared, just $37 a month can provide a child with meals and educational support in Guatemala. That's less than the cost of a few fast-food meals! If you want to connect with Be Humaniatian, Please visit their website: https://behumanitarian.org/Venturing into Fashion TechExploring the convergence of fashion tech, entrepreneurship, and fashion business. As a result of instabilities caused by the pandemic, many children are currently requiring more educational support than ever before. While we know that our children will eventually learn to read, write, do math and other skills, it is important to reach out for support if our children need it as that support goes beyond the applied skills, tutoring can support with their self steem, confidence and overall experience within educational contexts.  As a result, it was wonderful to connect with Gabrielle Crichlow of A Step Ahead Tutoring Services to learn more about how we can help and support our children through tutoring. Gabrielle is an incredibly dedicated educator who provided us with valuable insight about when we should invest in tutoring for our kids, how tutoring can benefit them, and more. Host Jodie Sweetin is joined by Amy McCarthy, Dr. Aida Balsano, Director for Prevention Communications and Public Engagement at the Center for Substance Abuse Prevention, and Robert Vincent, Associate Administrator for Alcohol Prevention and Treatment Policy at the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration. Ultimately our goal is to help parents have“The Talk.” If it hasn't happened yet, then let's be prepared…if it has, how did it go? If you screwed it up, no worries. Let's figure out how to get it right. But, on the other hand, if you feel it went well, take this as a reminder that the talk is not a one-off, let's figure out what's next in this constant battle to keep those we love more than life itself safe! Today our panel discusses the consequences of substance abuse. Learn why explaining the “why” is essential when talking to your child. IN THIS EPISODE: [00:00] Overview of The Talk - Part 2 [01:46] The knowledge your child has regarding drugs may be faulty [05:49] How does a parent cope with feelings of betrayal and dishonesty? Should there be  consequences for bad behavior [10:18] The importance of telling a child why this behavior is bad for them [12:54] How the drugs have changed over the years [19:36] Upcoming episode of Awkward Conversations KEY TAKEAWAYS: Kids don't look at the consequences of drug use. They don't frame it as health, wellness, or well-being. Instead, they only think about the future and need to hear why drugs harm them. Parents need to be listening and present.  A “behavior contract,” or reward and consequences, should be clear to everyone. Likewise, there should be inevitable consequences for certain behaviors.  The potency of drugs has changed.  They are more potent than they have ever been.  And the sad thing about that fact is that the wrong pill can kill.     ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees. Ultimately our goal is to help parents have “The Talk.” In this episode, we will discuss keeping the child's dignity intact while assisting them through difficult situations.  Separating what the child's behavior is and your love for the child can be hard when tempers are raging.   We will share tips on overcoming these situations and how to make “The Talk” beneficial to the child and not detrimental to your relationship.    IN THIS EPISODE: [00:00] Show excerpt  [02:25] Admitting as the parent that we are not perfect.  We make mistakes and may have made an error even in the position taken in the current conversation [06:36]Dos and Don'ts of having the conversation about substance abuse [11:53]LGBTQ children and the approach a parent takes [16:11] Anger and crisis mode versus compassion and empathy [18:24] Coming up on the next episode of Awkward Conversations   KEY TAKEAWAYS: Give your child a chance to participate in the “Talk.”  Don't direct the conversation at them but give both parent and child opportunities to voice their opinion.  There are cultural differences when there are age differences. Ensure that the child understands what you are communicating.  Don't assume you are on the same page. Don't lecture.  The goal is to keep the conversation going.  Kids will turn off a lecture. A parent's approach when discussing complex subjects with a child makes an enormous difference. It is ok to have quiet moments during talks with your kids.  Often both parties need time to reflect on what was said.  It is also ok as a parent not to have all the answers. Focus on the positive things in your child's life. Then, when it comes to young teens, ask lots of questions and be supportive as they try to find out who they are. ***DISCLAIMER***The views, information, or opinions expressed during the Awkward Conversation series are solely those of the individuals, speakers, commentators, experts, and or hosts involved and do not necessarily reflect nor represent those of the production, associates or broadcaster, or any of its employees. The Pursuit of Health Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 20, 2021 40:45

On this episode we had the opportunity to join Dr. Ronald Israelski at the headquarters of Orthopedic Relief Services International (ORSI) to discuss his work in international healthcare. Just 2 days before our session, on August 14, 2021, a large earthquake hit Haiti with a force even greater than that which devastated this already vulnerable country on January 12, 2010.  During the discussion the texts and phone calls were pouring in nonstop from Haiti and Dr. Israelski's American colleagues in their efforts to respond to the catastrophe that ORSI was specifically created to address.  Dr. Israelski begins the discussion by sharing his journey to becoming a physician leader in orthopedic surgery. He readily draws the connection between his fascination with building things as a child and his innate desire to help people in crises as the impetus for his medical career.   Dr. Israelski is an experienced practicing orthopedist who has created a legacy of expanding both the clinical and education infrastructure of his community.  An Assistant Clinical Professor at NYU for well over 20 years, he brings both the academic and frontline community-based mindset to his over 30 years of orthopedic work with a focus on hand surgery. During his 10 years serving as Chairman of the Dept of Orthopedic surgery at ORMC (now Garnet Health) in the Greater Hudson Valley of NY, he proved to be a medical pioneer.  Starting with the creation of a highly specialized joint and bone replacement center in 2005, he then became the driving force behind both the region's new medical school in collaboration with Touro University and an accredited residency training program at the region's newest and largest hospital -ORMC. This academic program established improved Health standards, Economic Vitality, and Educational Opportunities formerly unavailable in the Hudson Valley region.  Dr. Israeski shares the poignant moment on January 12, 2010 that dramatically turned his professional focus beyond the U.S. borders to the neighboring country of Haiti. This single event, which lasted only about thirty seconds, killed between 250,000 and 300,000 people, left well over 1,000,000 homeless, and critically injured hundreds of thousands more.  On that day he decided to roll up his sleeves and join other orthopedic colleagues in what can only be described as a horrific war zone ravished by one of the most life-changing environmental catastrophes of this century. He clearly explains the history and dynamics of this former land of riches troubled by an abusive colonial past, raping of he environment, a legacy of racism, corruption and detrimental outside poltical manipulation, now facing two monumental environmental catastrophies.  Dr. Ron, as his colleagues call him, explains how this initial venture in 2010 grew into the medical relief program ORSI that was being called back to action for this second earthquake right in the midst of our conversation. He explains how ORSI was built on the fundamentals he refers to as ICE - Build/Support Infrastructure, Clinical Work, Educational Support. The ORSI team has deployed over 30 teams to Haiti and raised millions of dollars of relief. It serves as the model for international medical care that is specifically guided by and addresses the needs of those affected.  Join us next time as we continue this intense dialogue with Dr Israelski in Part 2 of this timely episode where we venture into the need for Humane and Compassionate healthcare at home and abroad. You can follow Dr. Eric Fethke on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and Tik Tok @drfethkemd(This episode will also available in video format on Youtube @drfethkemd).
