If Yankee Stadium is “the house that Babe Ruth built,” Stax Records is “the house that Booker T, and the MG's built.” Integral to that potent combination is MG rhythm guitarist extraordinaire Steve Cropper. As a guitarist, A & R man, engineer, producer, songwriting partner of Otis Redding, Eddie Floyd and a dozen others and founding member of both Booker T. and the MG's and The Mar-Keys, Cropper was literally involved in virtually every record issued by Stax from the fall of 1961 through year end 1970.Such credits assure Cropper of an honored place in the soul music hall of fame. As co-writer of (Sittin' On) The Dock Of The Bay, Knock On Wood and In The Midnight Hour, Cropper is in line for immortality. Born on October 21, 1941 on a farm near Dora, Missouri, Steve Cropper moved with his family to Memphis at the age of nine. In Missouri he had been exposed to a wealth of country music and little else. In his adopted home, his thirsty ears amply drank of the fountain of Gospel, R & B and nascent Rock and Roll that thundered over the airwaves of both black and white Memphis radio. Bit by the music bug, Cropper acquired his first mail order guitar at the age of 14. Personal guitar heroes included Tal Farlow, Chuck Berry, Jimmy Reed, Chet Atkins, Lowman Pauling of the Five Royales and Billy Butler of the Bill Doggett band.

The evolution of the blues written and performed by Jon Hendricks was a direct critique of where the blues emanated from. It was a reminder of the gospel tinged spirituals of the church and the preachers who slung a guitar over themselves to sing and pick and lament those lost days in the fields picking cotton in slavery. Cats like the Reverend Gary Davis, John Lee Hooker,Indianola's own BB King, Muddy Waters, Blind Willie Johnson, Mississippi Fred McDowell epitomized this pan African struggle for basic human rights. They did this through the medium of records which gave these performers identities for younger white cats in Chicago and New York and Marin County who heard these sounds and then plugged in. My guest today is part of this generation who not only got to hear their heroes on the radio, but saw them up close with no teeth and in some cases had to sight guide them to their various gigs. In some cases they got to perform with them because of the regionalized economic wizardry of Bill Graham and Chet Helms who catered to music events which spoke to music. Not stratified in some genre necessitated label making funny farm but rather saw to it that young white bands shared the stage with soul acts and gospel and blues heck even the preservation hall jazz band. Bob Weir told me you can listen to these players but you really learn by playing with them. Relishing in their stage presence and eccentricities and calmness. Less is more, look beyond the surface and tell a story. My guest has been weaving musical stories for the last 5 decades. He was one of the Sons of Bill Champlin who enjoyed going to the original Fillmore and catching Sam and Dave along with James Browm at the Cow Palace, tripping with Phil Lesh and playing hootenannies with Janice Joplin and Jorma Kaukonen. He grew up with the sounds of Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow and his pops. He is an original seeker of sound who was an inspiration to both Carlos Santana and Jerry Garcia. The Sons were a sophisticated Mix of Blue Eyed Soul. They came out if the same school as Canned Heat, Boz Scaggs and Michael Bloomfield. The music has an Oakland funk flavor because of KSAN, Voco and the general creativity of a group of cats who expanded consciousness through legal LSD to see and feel how life really could be. Odd meters, hyperactive vocal harmonies and a bouncing melodic structure helped them stand out gain an identity and provide that essential link in the chain for modern day and future sound seekers.... My guest today has been a band leader for over 60 years. He made his name playing the vibes which is this hosts favorite instrument. It's a percussion instrument with a warm sound and can be played in a trio setting the way Red Norvo did with Tal Farlow and Mingus or in a Quintet setting like Cal Tjader did with Armando Peraza, Al mcKibbon and Dick Birk. It fits into all types of musical settings and it was popularized by my guest by his virtuosic approach and an ability to create an output within the big band ensemble. My guest today is a lover of people. He has an insatiable desire to play music you can tap your foot to. That's what Jack Kleinsinger told me about my guest. He's played on the east coast and west during the heyday of bebop and swing. His peers include Bill Holman and Chet Baker, Jimmy Rowles and Ray Brown, Milt Jackson and Harold Land. These cats had to sing for their supper because if they didn't sing there would be nothing left to eat. My guest was a relentless entertainer and musician. He created a following through his gesticulations and banter along with a Jitterbug Waltz when music was made for dancing. His collaborations with Steve Allen and Star Time increased his name recognition in the often obscure world of improvisational swing or melodic invention. He continues to be a link in the chain For younger musicians who are searching for something to say. There are no more live clubs on every corner of urban America, there are no longer 1 month residencies at the London House or Howard Rumsey's Lighthouse or Lord Chumleys and the barriers and stratification that have been put up in music hurt the ability for experimentation and chance taking because mega money has superseded quality art, pacification rules the day as opposed to the visceral culture that was visible on Market Street in Chicago or Harlem. Ultimately the ego has superseded the music in that individuals now project their own monster chops at the expense of the accompanists, the listening and the love. This is why lessons in life from the old guard are key. It's why my guests son plays with venerable grey beards Ron Carter, Kenny Barron and Ron McClure......time for some good vibes.

The late guitarist Emily Remler is the third Jazz Feature with female instrumentalists. Emily's time here was sadly short-lived as she died at age 32. She was very prominent on the Jazz scene for about 9 years. She was praised by all the still living guitar greats like Barney Kessel, Tal Farlow, Charlie Byrd and especially Herb Ellis who loved her playing so much that he made sure she got a recording contract. Most of her work was documented on Concord Records and tonight we'll delve into those recordings to present a fine picture of Emily, who deserves to be remembered. She was born on Sept. 18,1957 and died on May 4,1990. She deserved a much longer life but we must be grateful for her fine recordings. She is backed by various musicians on this Feature like pianists Hank Jones, James Williams and bassists Don Thompson and Buster Williams and drummers Terry Clarke and Marvin "Smitty"Smith and others. Check out Ms.Remler tonight....you'll love her!

The title really explains it all. This great self-taught guitarist is considered one of the finest players of his instrument in Jazz music. In 1956 Talmadge "Tal" Farlow had several long club gigs in New York with this drumless trio comprising of piano virtuoso Eddie Costa and bassist Vinnie Burke. They took the Farlow Trio into the recording studio on May 31, 1956 and recorded this wonderful uplifting album that featured not only Farlow's unique guitar style but some great interplay between the three musicians. This intimacy could only be really achieved through working together for a long time. They came up with "The Swinging Guitar of Tal Farlow" one of the pivotal Jazz guitar albums. Enjoy!

We're featuring an interview with bassist Larry Gray on this week's episode.  Larry's multi-instrumental path has taken him through performance on guitar, flute, cello, and piano in addition to bass.  Larry is in high demand as a jazz bassist in Chicago, performing regularly for decades at Joe Segal's Jazz Showcase, and he teaches at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.  Enjoy! About Larry Born on Chicago’s south side, Larry Gray is considered by many to be one of jazz music’s finest double bassists. His impressive versatility and uncommon musical curiosity keep him in demand as both a leader and sideman. Larry began his musical studies at the age of five when his father brought home an accordion and introduced him to his first teacher. Invigorated by this study, Larry added the guitar to his arsenal and studied piano seriously for many years thereafter. It was not until he was in his twenties that he decided to switch to the double bass. Larry went on to study classical music extensively, eventually adding the cello to his long list of loved instruments. His principal teachers were Joseph Guastafeste, longtime principal bassist of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, and cellist Karl Fruh, a highly regarded soloist and teacher. Under Mr. Fruh's guidance, he received bachelors and masters degrees in cello performance from the Chicago Musical College of Roosevelt University. Throughout his long and varied career, Larry has worked with numerous exceptional artists and jazz legends, including McCoy Tyner, Jack DeJohnette, Danilo Perez, Branford Marsalis, Benny Green, Freddy Cole, Benny Golson, Steve Turre, George Coleman, Lee Konitz, Bobby Hutcherson, Sonny Fortune, Ira Sullivan, Junior Mance, David "Fathead" Newman, Willie Pickens, Ann Hampton Callaway, Charles McPherson, Antonio Hart, Jackie McLean, Sonny Stitt, Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Al Cohn, Randy Brecker, Nicholas Payton, Kurt Elling, Eric Alexander, Phil Woods, Jon Faddis, Roscoe Mitchell, Von Freeman, Wilbur Campbell, Eddie Harris, and Les McCann. In addition, he has collaborated with guitarists Kenny Burrell, Joe Pass, and Tal Farlow, as well trumpeters Donald Byrd, Harry "Sweets" Edison, and Tom Harrell, among others. Larry continues to tour extensively, performing at jazz festivals and clubs around the globe, including the Umbria Jazz Festival, the Havana Jazz Festival, Rio Sao Paulo Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, the Montreal International Jazz Festival, ECM Festival in Bielsko-Biala, Poland, the Poznan Jazz Festival, Monterey Jazz Festival, the Montreaux Detroit Festival, the Chicago Jazz Festival, Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Hollywood Bowl, Village Vanguard, Blue Note (New York and Tokyo), Kennedy Center, and the Ravinia Festival, with such jazz luminaries as Marian McPartland, Clark Terry, Nancy Wilson, Frank Morgan, James Moody, Larry Coryell, Louis Bellson, Barry Harris, Dorothy Donegan, Monty Alexander, Frank Wess, Joe Williams, Doc Severinsen and the Tonight Show Band, Kenny Drew Jr., and most recently, Ramsey Lewis. As a classical musician, Larry played several seasons with the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, including a year as principal bass. He worked on many occasions with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra under master conductors Erich Leinsdorf, Rafeal Kubelik, Carlo Maria Guilini, and Sir George Solti. He also was the featured double bassist with Lyric Opera for the world premiere of the opera Amistad. Larry is an arranger and composer whose work has been widely recognized as uniquely melodic and exceptionally refined. His discography includes 1,2, 3,..., on Chicago Sessions, the solo bass record, Gravity, One Look, and Solo + Quartet, all on Graywater Records, as well as the Ramsey Lewis and Nancy Wilson collaborations Meant to Be and Simple Pleasures. He can also be heard on the Ramsey Lewis recordings Appassionata, Time Flies, and With One Voice, and the latest release, Songs From the Heart. Larry also arranged and produced the critically acclaimed CD, Django by Ferro. Furthermore, Larry has recorded with Chet Baker, Curtis Fuller, Ira Sullivan, Lin Halliday, Willie Pickens, Nicholas Payton, Randy Brecker, Bunky Green, Bob Moses, Irish flute-whistle virtuoso Laurence Nugent, pop sensations Linda Eder, Dennis DeYoung, and Peter Cetera, and songwriter Michael Smith, among others. In addition, Larry is a first-call studio musician, and his playing can be heard on many commercial radio and television jingles and studio projects as well as the PBS television series, Legends of Jazz, where he can be seen performing alongside Jim Hall, Benny Golson, Chris Potter, Phil Woods, David Sanborn, Chris Botti, Clark Terry, and Roy Hargrove. In addition, Larry's original composition for double bass and guitar, Five Movements, was commissioned and performed by the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Chamber Ensemble at Symphony Center in Chicago. Most recently, Larry has composed two commissioned works for the Jazz Institute of Chicago. Tribute to the Bass Masters Suite was premiered at the Poznan Festival in Poland in 2008 to much acclaim. A second work, String Thing, was first presented in Chicago in October 2010 as part of the Jazz Institute of Chicago Jazz in Chicago series. Larry also completed a collaborative project with bassists Rufus Reid and Joseph Guastafeste that was premiered in March of 2011 in Chicago. Larry Gray is also a dedicated teacher and is Assistant Professor of Jazz Studies at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. He also served for many years on the faculties at DePaul University and Northern Illinois University. Active as a clinician at high school and colleges and festivals thought North America, he also coaches various instrumentalists in jazz techniques as well as music theory, sight-singing, and composition. This is quintessential Tal Farlow one of the masters of Jazz guitar with his trio including the fabulous Eddie Costa at the piano and Vinnie Burke on bass. The repertoire is mostly standards but done in the unique and wonderfully refreshing manner by one of the great masters of Jazz guitar Tal Farlow! This album was recorded in May of 1956 after Tal did his apprenticeship with Red Norvo and Artie Shaw and others. This band became the house band at The Composer, an upscale Jazz venue in New York until it's closing in 1958. Enjoy a guitarist who was not only swinging but creative and distinctive and whose technical facility was the envy of every other guitarist. Tal Farlow Jazz giant!

Tonight The Jazz Show is celebrating what would be Artie Shaw's 101st birthday. Arthur Jacob Arshawsky was born on May 23, 1910 and died at the ripe old age of 94 on December 30, 2004. Tonight on the Jazz Feature, I'll be playing a selection of his final recordings as a musician and one of the finest clarinettists in the world. These are small group recordings that show that Mr. Shaw was not resting on his past laurels and was keeping up with the times. With Artie on clarinet are Hank Jones on piano, Tal Farlow on guitar, Joe Roland on vibes, Tommy Potter on bass and Irv Kluger on drums. They were done in New York and Los Angeles in February, March and June 1954 and consituted his final recordings....he never touched the clarinet after this. The selections are all arranged tighly and neatly by Mr. Shaw and show his sence of perfection. The tunes are standards and a few Shaw originals and demonstrate his virtuosity on the clarinet. Someone once asked Shaw who he felt was the best clarinettist......himself or Benny Goodman.....Shaw raised his eyebrows and said "Benny plays the clarinet, I play music'. Indeed Mr Shaw.....Happy Birthday!

TrueFire's Guitabulary

He's one of the most under-heralded geniuses of the jazz guitar. After cutting his teeth on the NYC bebop scene of the late '40s, and building a rep with vibraphonist Red Norvo, Farlow receded from jazz life to live in a shore town in New Jersey. Pete Wagula's lesson examines the titan's style, with a predilection for chord melody, but an astonishing facility for single-note runs and double stops. Farlow, renowned for his big hands, will test your stretching capabilities. Overall, an invaluable look at one of the all-time greats.
