David Magee, author of Things Have Changed, joins us to explain today's teen addiction crisis involving social media, potent synthetic drugs and vulnerable mental health.Bonfire Digital Wellness has a diverse team of seasoned, compassionate school counselors, ready to coach your teen. Check it out today and take advantage of a 1-month FREE trial: BonfireDW.org/talkingtoteensFull Show Notes Teen substance use has drastically changed in recent years. With skyrocketing rates of anxiety, depression and addiction, today's parents are facing new and confusing challenges when trying to help their kids. We used to assume teens mainly struggled with peer pressure around drinking or smoking cigarettes. Now, teens face a host of new pressures tied to social media, a lack of sleep, and easy access to dangerously potent substances. To help parents understand what's really happening and how we can better communicate with struggling teens, we spoke with David Magee, author of Things Have Changed: What Every Parent and Educator Should Know About the Student Mental Health and Substance Misuse Crisis. After losing his son William to an accidental overdose in college, David became an advocate for better understanding teen addiction. He now speaks nationwide to students and parents, and started the William McGee Institute for Student Well Being at Ole Miss. It's Not The Same SubstancesToday's teens aren't using their parent's drugs. While past generations struggled with alcohol, cigarettes or weaker strains of marijuana, today's kids are taking synthetic drugs, often laced with fentanyl, that are exponentially more potent and dangerous, David explains. He describes a current epidemic of fake Adderall pills being sold to high schoolers and college students. The counterfeit pills are never actual Adderall, but instead made of unknown substances designed to be addictive. Almost all contain fentanyl, says David. Kids think they're buying a familiar drug, but it's actually much more treacherous. This is just one example of how substances have changed. David explains today's marijuana can have THC levels of 70-90%, compared to just 4-8% in the 1990s. He says schools are shocked when drug tests come back 6 or 7 times higher than just a few years ago.Social Media Enables Secret AddictionDavid explains that the majority of illegal transactions happen over social media apps and payment platforms. Kids are finding connections on Instagram and Snapchat, then paying through Venmo or CashApp to stay under the radar.Seeing multiple Venmo payments in and out of a teen's account every day could signal that something is amiss, says David. He explains that parents needs to understand today's digital landscape to spot warning signs. Punishment and phone monitoring usually backfires, while asking caring questions can help kids open up.Focus on Feelings, Not Scare TacticsWell-meaning authority figures often take a punitive approach, trying to scare teens away from substances through condemnation. But David explains this usually has the opposite effect, making kids feel ashamed in ways that increase their desire to use.Instead, he suggests leading with empathy, compassion and care. Getting kids the right kind of therapy or counseling is crucial, preferably with someone who specializes in teen addiction. Building teens' emotional intelligence through ongoing communication within families is key.Above all, David focuses on helping teens cultivate sustainable joy in their lives, not just harping on what they shouldn't do. He explains that happy, engaged teens are less likely to self-medicate through dangerous substance use.If you found this episode helpful, check out David's website at davidmcgee.com for more resources. His book provides practical guidance for parents and educators struggling with today's newly complex issues around teen mental health and addiction. Gayani is a psychiatrist who specializes in educating parents and teens about addiction specifically about prevention and the author of A Psychiatrist Guide: Stop Teen Addiction Before It Starts.Gayani has had many clients die from addiction, and she recognized the difficulty it takes to get into recovery and the support that is necessary. In doing her research she noticed there was a lot of content about how to treat addiction but felt there was nothing regarding preventing addiction. We talk about the power of EMDR therapy and trauma work which is critical for healing the brain and reducing the desire for people to use substances to escape life. Substances actually stop the development of the brain. Things like marijuana use will stop the brain development and you don't catch up. You can't get that back. Gayani is a huge promoter of learning how to deal with things like anxiety without the use of highly addictive substances. It is such a big risk. Help them learn to delay their gratification, to self-soothe when they can't/don't get what they want, to manage their uncomfortable feelings. They don't have to satisfy those feelings right away, they can live with it, sit with it, distract themselves etc. They do change and the feelings will go away. www.Drgayani.comSupport the showSupport the showOh, and by the way, if you didn't know, I have an awesome course called Creating Healthy Boundaries; it's affordable, easy to follow, and will make a big difference in how you feel. Society plays to the loves of teens and is working overtime to get young people addicted to pleasure-filled experiences. With this, teens understand the traps and when they're in a snare they often cover over it and hide the path that led them to where they are. Dr. Kathy has important insight on how to guide teens well in these moments and how to remind them of their true identity.

Nir Eyal, author of Indistractable and Hooked and former lecturer at Stanford University, offers new insight into why teens get so “addicted” to technology. Nir suggests the problem might not be as insurmountable as we thought and has a method for how to become indistractable.
Teen Challenges (0:00:00) The rise in social media use has led some teens to go to extreme lengths to gain popularity. A popular method of gaining followers is to do trending social media challenges. These challenges range from silly tricks (like the water bottle challenge, where teens had to try and flip a water bottle and get it to land right-side up), to downright dangerous dares. In 2018 a viral challenge called the “Tide-Pod Challenge” encouraged teens to videotape themselves biting down on highly toxic Tide-Pods. In one year nearly 220 teens were hospitalized in one year because of this challenge. So what is it about these virtual challenges that appeal to teens? Why are they willing to forgo all common sense to get a few more followers? Here to discuss with us the addictive nature of teen challenges is child psychologist, Dr. Nicole Beurkens. Money Conversations with Family (0:18:58) Depending on whether or not you are used to talking about this in the home or not, the topic of money is consistently uncomfortable. It's such a sensitive topic. But it should be something we can discuss openly with our family members. So how can we start having open, financial conversations with our spouse or our kids? To answer all of these questions and explain why we should talk about money in the home, we've invited Jen Smith, the founder of Modern Frugality, here with us today. Teen Addiction (0:32:43) As many of you know, here at The Lisa Show, we try our best to broach important conversations. Sadly, some of the most important conversations we should be having are emotionally difficult or have stigmas surrounding them. Today, in an effort to break stigmas and open up helpful discussions, we've invited Susan Burrowes on the show. Susan is the author of Off the Rails: One Family's Journey Through Teen Addiction, in which she shares her experience as the mother of teenager dealing with addictions. And she is here to discuss ways to find hope and healing for families with teen addiction. Virtual Reality (0:52:50) Virtual reality games have become more and more popular with kids and adults over the last few years. They've also been the subject of many sci-fi novels and movies like Ready Player One or even Jumanji. While many praise the Virtual Reality experience, others fear the idea of it replacing the real world. So, we wanted to get down to the bottom of Virtual reality and find out what's good about it and what might be dangerous. Here with us today is Robert Scoble, tech evangelist, to help us better understand what virtual reality is and its future. Teens Teach Technology (1:07:05) Quarantine has made us more dependent on technology than ever before. But during this transition to near completely virtual lives, what about the generation that doesn't have the same knowledge about technology that we do? Many of these older adults are being left behind without any opportunitiesto learn how to use these devices. This is the mission of Teens Teach Technology, a youth organization led by teenagers dedicated to teaching older adults how to properly use their technology. Today, we're joined by their founder, Asmita Mittal, and Nicole Lau, their head of PR. They're here to talk with us about their efforts to make us more media literate. The Last Blockbuster on Earth (1:20:30) There was something magical about taking a trip to a Blockbuster, checking out the new releases, re-watching classics, and grabbing snacks. Unfortunately, you can no longer find a Blockbuster on every corner, but there is one corner—the last corner in the world—where you can relive those golden days. The last Blockbuster on earth is still operating out of Bend, Oregon! Here to tell us how they've been able to stick it out for so long is store manager, Sandi Harding. Sleep Training Kids (1:32:03) The routine goes something like this: you coerce your child into their pajamas and into brushing their teeth, you've read their favorite book (twice), made up a new bedtime story for them, and then spent the next 20 minutes letting your arm fall asleep in the hopes that the child curled up on it will too. Finally, you gingerly extricate your arm, tiptoe out, and get cozy in your own bed only to have your child walk in and announce that they can't sleep. This is a cycle that you rinse and repeat nightly. So how can we effectively sleep train both our littlest kids and our toddlers? Here to this question and discuss effective techniques for sleep training is a Fellow at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and Director of the Behavioral Sleep Program at Connecticut Children's Medical Center, Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg.

Everyday Rockstar (0:00:00) Lisa and Richie talk with this week's Everyday Rockstar. You can nominate yourself or someone you know to be featured on the show by sending us an email at thelisashow@byu.edu. Butter Sculpting (0:06:53) What is the best thing you've made using butter? (*Lisa and Richie, discuss this!) Most of you would probably say cookies, a grilled cheese, or a yummy butter pasta. But if you've ever been to the Minnesota State Fair, you would see butter creations that put your sugar cookies to shame. Every year at the fair in August, butter artists create self-portraits for the winners of the Minnesota Dairy Princess Program, using 90-pound blocks of butter as their canvases. Joining us on the show today is the famed butter sculptor Linda Christensen. She's here to discuss her history with butter sculpting and its use as an art medium. Creation Museum (0:25:22) For many people, the Bible can be confusing and hard to understand. For some, the accounts told in its ancient pages seem distant and removed from the world today. And for others, despite wanting to know more about the book, they don't know where to start or how to make sense of the writing. Well a museum out in Petersburg, Kentucky—called the Creation Museum—has set out to bring the Bible to life through its exhibitions in order to instruct and inspire its guests. Here to tell us all about it is Roger Patterson, from the museum. Sleep Training Kids (0:39:14) The routine goes something like this: you coerce your child into their pajamas and into brushing their teeth, you've read their favorite book (twice), made up a new bedtime story for them, and then spent the next 20 minutes letting your arm fall asleep in the hopes that the child curled up on it will too. Finally, you gingerly extricate your arm, tiptoe out, and get cozy in your own bed only to have your child walk in and announce that they can't sleep. This is a cycle that you rinse and repeat nightly. So how can we effectively sleep train both our littlest kids and our toddlers? Here to this question and discuss effective techniques for sleep training is Fellow at the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, Dr. Lynelle Schneeberg. She is the author of "Becoming Your Child's Sleep Coach: The Bedtime Doctors 5-Step Guide, Ages 3-10" Working Out Too Much (1:12:49) Working out, no matter who you are, is vital for staying physically healthy. For some, working out is a chore that would rather be avoided, but for others it can be an addictive and healthy way to pass time. Working out is tricky though, because doing too little can be unhealthy but too much can also be bad for your body. How is one to find the perfect balance? Here with us today is physical trainer Monique Eagle to help us find the perfect balance of working out. Teen Addiction (1:27:09) As many of you know, here at The Lisa Show, we try our best to broach important conversations. Sadly, some of the most important conversations we should be having are emotionally difficult or have stigmas surrounding them. Today, in an effort to break stigmas and open up helpful discussions, we've invited Susan Burrowes on the show. Susan is the author of “Off the Rails: One Family's Journey Through Teen Addiction,” in which she shares her experience as the mother of teenager dealing with addictions. And she is here to discuss ways to find hope and healing for families with teen addiction.
Lisa and Richie talk to this week's Everyday Rockstar, Linda Christensen discusses her butter sculptures, Roger Patterson talks about the Creation Museum, Lynelle Schneeberg gives sleep training tips, Monique Eagle explains how much working out is too much, Susan Burrowes discusses how to support teenagers struggling with addiction.

Paul Krauss MA LPC interviews author Andrew Tennison who tells his real-life story about how he almost lost his son to addiction, how he coped, and how his son ultimately was able to overcome his addiction. In addition to telling his true story, Andrew Tennison is a consummate mental health professional and excellent author. He shares best practices for parents and families facing the challenges of dealing with addiction, as well as important facts and wisdom from his career. Andrew Tennison is the author of an excellent book which is part memoir and part educational manual for parents entitled: Killing the Bear: Surviving Teen Addiction. On Killing the Bear: "Over the past fifty years, the face of addiction has changed in America–it has become much younger. It is estimated that 90% of serious problems with alcohol and drugs in our country begin between the ages of 12 and 20. Unfortunately, our efforts toward the prevention and treatment of alcohol and drug use by youth have not kept pace with this new reality. For parents who have found themselves dealing day to day with a teen caught in the grips of addiction, the gap between this new reality and the inadequate remedies is often overwhelming. Despite a successful career in the field of mental health, Andrew Tennison was one such parent. While he knew how to help children and teens who had suffered from abuse and neglect, he knew nothing about how to help his own son, Ian, as he slipped into the nether world of aggressive alcohol and drug use. Killing The Bear is his story about what it was like to be a parent of a teen struggling with addiction and what he did about it. Written for parents who are traveling a similar path or those who want to help such families, Killing The Bear provides both a personal account of living with teen addiction and practical ways of surviving it." Sally grew up in an expat family where her older sister was acting out, her parents were quite strict and there was no talk about feelings and love in the home. Sally found ways to become manipulative and to seek attention at a young age and she began to have disordered eating before she hit high school. She then moved on to self harm as a coping mechanism as she did not feel comfortable in her own skin. She was in search of ways to feel happy; by the age of 12 she became addicted to marijuana and alcohol, then became addicted to crystal meth by the age of 15. Her teacher noticed something was wrong and eventually she got the help that she needed. This is Sally’s addiction story and her long and difficult path to recovery.
