The Economic Costs of a Phone-Based Childhood, with Jonathan Haidt

In one of this year's bestselling books, "The Anxious Generation: How the Great Rewiring of Childhood is Causing An Epidemic of Mental Illness," New York University social psychologist Jonathan Haidt argues that today's childhoods spent under the influence of smartphones and overprotective parenting has led to the reported explosion in cases of teenage anxiety and depression. He calls this process a "three-act play": the diminishment of trust in our communities, the loss of a play-based childhood, and the arrival of a hyper-connected world.Haidt also believes the problem is solvable. On this episode of Capitalisn't, he joins Bethany and Luigi to discuss parenting, learning, adolescence, and in an age where Congress won't act on regulation, his four proposed solutions to break social media's "collective action trap" on children. But are his solutions feasible? How do we weigh their costs, benefits, limitations, risks, and the roadblocks to their implementation? What are the consequences of an anxious generation for our economy — and what can we really do about it?

Are Smartphones Really Driving the Rise in Teenage Depression?

Plain English with Derek Thompson

Today—a closer critical look at the relationship between smartphones and mental health. One of the themes we've touched on more than any other on this show is that American teenagers—especially girls—appear to be “engulfed” in historic rates of anxiety and sadness. The numbers are undeniable. The Youth Risk Behavior Survey, which is published by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, showed that from 2011 to 2021, the share of teenage girls who say they experience “persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness” increased by 50 percent. But there is a fierce debate about why this is happening. The most popular explanation on offer today in the media says: It's the smartphones, stupid. Teen anxiety increased during a period when smartphones and social media colonized the youth social experience. This is a story I've shared on this very show, including with Jonathan Haidt, the author of the new bestselling book 'The Anxious Generation_.'_ But this interpretation is not dogma in scientific circles. In fact, it's quite hotly debated. In 2019, an Oxford University study titled "The Association Between Adolescent Well-Being and Digital Technology Use" found that the effect size of screen time on reduced mental health was roughly the same as the association with “eating potatoes.” Today, I want to give more space to the argument that it's not just the phones. Our guest is David Wallace-Wells, bestselling science writer and a columnist for The New York Times.  He says something more complicated is happening. In particular, the rise in teen distress seems concentrated in a handful of high-income and often English-speaking countries. So what is it about the interaction between smartphones, social media, and an emerging Anglophonic culture of mental health that seems to be driving this increase in teen distress? Today we're going to focus on how to help your teen with depression through an interview with a  great guest, 19 year-old Sadie Sutton, host of the podcast She Persisted. She was first diagnosed with depression when she was 13 and by the age of 14, had been hospitalized four times for severe depression, anxiety, and suicidality. Realizing things were going nowhere fast, her parents took her to McLean Hospital, a residential inpatient program. And it was there  - life changed. Why should you listen and share her story? Suicide is the second-leading cause of death among people aged 15 to 24 in the US. 20% of high school students report serious thoughts of suicide and 9% have made attempts. Ohio State football player Harry Miller's revelations that he attempted suicide, shared his struggles with his coach and got help. He says, “This is not an issue reserved for the far and away,” wrote Miller. “It is in our homes. It is in our conversations. It is in the people we love.” Here are some of the salient points from Sadie: Her parents, especially her dad, didn't realize or even perhaps believe, that a teenager could be clinically depressed – and his efforts to “snap her out of it” or “tough love” made things worse. Prior to McLean, none of her therapists or the programs she entered asked for her commitment to the process of healing they proposed. In fact, they flat said that her stay would do her no good if she wasn't going to choose to do the work. And that requirement is what caused her to actually do the work of healing. Her parents took part of family therapy and learned a new way of talking about conflict, of expressing emotions, or negotiating, and of being aware of your impact on others. She's a huge fan of DBT 9 Dialectical Behavior Therapy and she talks about some of its basic tenets. But before we begin the interview, I'm so excited to introduce you to a new sponsor here at SelfWork! Magnesium Breakthrough. Clair Norman, with the Cameron K. Gallagher Foundation (CKG Foundation), is our guest who talks to Edpsire about the CKG Foundation, mental health, self-care, and mindfulness. The CKG Foundation is an organization who's mission is to fulfill Cameron's dream and legacy by being a positive force that works to cultivate awareness and understanding of teenage depression and anxiety. Cameron Gallagher was a bright and talented teenager. Although ever-smiling, she faced her own personal battles with depression and anxiety. She began to grow weary of keeping her struggles a private battle, and knew that there were many teens just like her who were in great pain behind closed doors. Her dream was to create a 5k race in her community to raise awareness of teenage depression. She began making plans for the race, and titled the race the SpeakUp5k in order to draw attention to the issue of teen depression. She wanted to let other teens like herself know that it was okay to “SpeakUp” about their personal battles. During this time, Cameron also set a personal goal for herself and began training for the Shamrock Half Marathon. On March 16, 2014, sixteen-year-old Cameron completed her goal of finishing the race, and passed away suddenly from an undiagnosed heart condition after crossing the finish line. As her family discovered more and more of Cameron's plans for the 5k, her family fulfilled her dream by holding the first race in her honor. Over 10,000 people participated in the May 2014 launch party, and 3,500 participated in the inaugural 5k race in Richmond in September 2014. Since then, the SpeakUp5k race series has expanded, and Cameron's message has spread across the nation. Share this episode and get involved! Parents, educators, and teens! All are welcome in the effort to help teens who are struggling. They have Instagram and Facebook. Check out their website! No one is alone...let's help bring people out of the dark and "SPEAK UP!" This episode is dedicated to Cameron Gallagher. She is a true game-changer and her legacy is helping thousands... https://www.ckgfoundation.org/

I don’t believe in coincidences, only co-incidents: things that you hear, see or feel that help remind your soul of its path. I appreciate the phrase, “Grow or Wilt.” I think that’s what we’re all here for – to continually expand our hearts and minds as we navigate our way through the plethora of experiences we are presented with for this purpose.Raised in Northern Illinois, I began to see wolves in my dreams from a very early age. Always a nature girl, I spent my free time either swimming in a lake near my house or roaming around in the Enchanted Forrest near my home. It was here I first heard nature speaking to me; asking for my help while promising guidance in this endeavor. After earning a degree in environmental conservation at UC Boulder, I worked as an environmental consultant in D.C., San Francisco and Los Angeles.      With my adult children now grown and flown, I’m able to focus on pursing those passions that most pull my heartstrings: wolves and writing. I spend weekdays in Tribeca, New York and weekends near the wolves in South Salem, New York.  My first novel, “Winter of the Wolf,” will be published by Greenleaf in July, 2020.

Listen in on my conversation with my 14-year-old son about his depression and what advice he has for parents of teenagers. this one is very personal and I want you all to have some insight into what it's like to be a teenager with depression in 2019.   BIO: Brooke Lacey is a 43-year-old adult living successfully with PTSD, Bipolar I, General Anxiety Disorder, and Adjustment Disorder. While she doesn’t have a gruesome story of beatings, sexual abuse, or being deployed to a war zone, Brooke's story is not unique. She grew up feeling unloved and unaccepted by the one person she needed love and acceptance from the most — her mother. From an early age, she was raised with extreme religious beliefs, which caused permanent trauma that became a heavy burden in her own adulthood and motherhood. Today, Brooke is a business owner, single mother, friend to many, and stranger to no one. And she feels lucky to be alive — abundantly blessed to have found her way and to have found what has worked for her: medication, therapy, exercise, friendship, and motherhood. Brooke believes in making the distinction that she lives successfully with mental illness but does not suffer from it.  In this podcast she shares her personal experiences via a candid, no-nonsense, approach, Brooke intends to bring healing to those who may be struggling and awareness to communities at large, so as to stamp out stigma surrounding mental illness once and for all.  --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/disruptingstigma/message

Suicide Prevention and the Grief of those Left BehindI was personally devastated by suicide on July 1, 2007, when my youngest brother, Scott, took his own life at the age of 28.  Scott struggled for many years in and out of mental health treatment episodes.  He never quite let go of the perceived stigma of what it meant to have a mental illness, so he never fully accepted treatment.  Even if he had, we know some people still make the choice to end their life.  What they don't know, or can't know, is how the survivors they leave behind are profoundly affected. I met today's guest, Dr. Jonathan Singer, LCSW at the Podcast Movement conference in Chicago last July.  Jonathan has been the host of The Social Work Podcast for over 9 years.  He started it as a way of bringing his university students extra information between lectures.  it has since taken on a long life of it's own.  There is not only a vast array of information  pertaining to all aspects of  the field of social work, but he also delivers inspirational interviews of people doing extraordinary things. Jonathan's primary field of study is that of Suicide Prevention and Awareness.  He is the author of Dr. Singer is the author of 45 publications, including the 2015 book Suicide in Schools: A practitioner’s guide to multilevel prevention, assessment, intervention, and postvention .  He has given over 100 academic presentations around the country and is an expert in his field. What's Happening in This EpisodeThe first half of the episode features our conversation about:    -- The ages of children most at risk for suicide- How to discuss suicidal language with your child- What to do when your child says things like, "I wish I were dead!"- How to utilize professional help and when it should be considered- The significance of the suicidal thoughts- The Zero Suicide Initiative- The Jason Flatt Act- What #Not6 is all aboutThe second half of the episode, Jonathan dives in with me to explore how I and my family were affected by my brother's suicide.  I am exploring this publicly hoping that it will help shed light on how complicated the grieving process can be for such a loss and also help those who are survivors of a loved one's suicide feel less alone.  Grief is complicated even when we expect a death to take place (i.e. when an elderly parent passes away), but it becomes more complex when someone you love chooses to die by suicide.  My family's reaction is not unusual, but in general, we still do not speak abou losing loved one's to suicide openly.  I'm hoping that by speaking about it in this forum, others may start their own conversations with their loved ones struggling with the suicidal thoughts, or amongst themselves if they are already grieving.Thank you for listening to this very personal episode. ResourcesThe Zero Suicide InitiativeThe Jason Flatt ActWhat #Not6 is all aboutDr. Jonathna Singer, LCSW's bio at Loyola University ChicagoThe Social Work Podcast
