Success can be a gift, but pride can turn it into a curse. In this episode, Pastor Chris Kouba and host Josh Thomas unpack the “glory trap”—how pride creeps into our identity, blinds us to wisdom, and sets us up for a fall. Through Scripture, stories from real life, and practical steps, they explore how men can recognize the dangers of self-reliance and instead walk in humility, receiving God's favor instead of His opposition. To find out more about Pastor Chris, follow him on all the social platforms (@ckouba) and to connect with the ministry of United City visit https://unitedcity.church.Show NotesFollow on Instagram: @stepup.podcastFollow United City: @untdcitychurchConnect with Pastor Chris: http://chriskouba.comMore About United City: https://unitedcity.church/

Tom Logue - September 14th 2025 Do not be conquered by evil, but conquer evil with good. This week, Tom pauses our King and His Kingdom series to address the events surrounding the tragic assassination of Charlie Kirk and the reactions that followed. From Romans 12 and Ephesians 6, he reminds us that the greatest war we face is not political or cultural, but a cosmic war against evil itself. Our true battle is not against flesh and blood, but against the spiritual forces of darkness. Tom exhorts us to guard our hearts, refuse to repay evil with evil, and instead cling to what is good. This is a time for grief, humility, repentance, and persistent prayer—because in Christ, we are more than conquerors. In this episode of Step Up, Pastor Chris and Host Josh Thomas tackle one of the most overlooked yet destructive areas of a man's life—sexual sin. From pornography to infidelity, they uncover the myths men believe: “It's not that big of a deal,” “I can stop anytime,” and “I'll never change.”Through scripture, raw honesty, and practical wisdom, they show how sexual compromise doesn't just stay hidden—it bleeds into money, pride, relationships, and legacy. More importantly, they point to the hope and freedom found in Christ, reminding men that purity is possible and powerful. If you've ever felt trapped, this conversation will equip you with tools to fight temptation, honor women, and build the kind of legacy your family can stand on for generations. To find out more about Pastor Chris, follow him on all the social platforms (@ckouba) and to connect with the ministry of United City visit https://unitedcity.church. James 1:1-18
When life hits hard, James 1 shows us trials aren't pointless—they're purposeful. In this message, we learn to choose joy, ask God for wisdom, stand firm without doubting, and spot the enemy's playbook: Desire → Deception → Disobedience → Death. Every good gift comes from our unchanging Father, and those who persevere receive the crown of life. Lean in, take notes, and let your faith grow stronger today.

Usually, I feature drummers on this podcast, and we've had some incredible ones—plus music directors like Nate Patten and music coordinators like Michael Aarons and Michael Keller. But this time, I wanted to bring on someone I've known and played with for the past ten years, a true “Piano Man” and multi-instrumentalist who has made his mark on Broadway and beyond: Matthew Friedman.Matthew isn't just a pianist—he's a singer, a bandleader, a composer, and yes, even a drummer. He was “The Piano Man” in the national touring company of Movin' Out and has performed with the legendary Lords of 52nd Street, Billy Joel's original band. He's also been part of Broadway productions like Jersey Boys and Smokey Joe's Café, while leading his own group, Matthew Friedman & Stiletto. In this episode, we talk about:* His early start in music and the influences that shaped him.* How he made the leap from being an attorney to a full-time musician.* The highs and lows of touring life—from first-class gigs to rough bus-and-truck runs.* Stories from his time on Broadway, including connections to past podcast guest Jon Berger and future guest Joe Bergamini.* What it means to be more than just a player in the pit—how to lead, adapt, and thrive as a versatile instrumentalist.Matthew has great stories, big insights, and a unique perspective on what it takes to succeed in this business—not just as a drummer, but as a full-fledged musician and bandleader. Some clips of me playing a fun gig with him several years ago:Clayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and Off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical, and The Gospel at Colonus (featuring Kim Burrell). Originally posted December 2021In this episode of Broadway Drumming 101, I sit down with Dena Tauriello, the drummer for Little Shop of Horrors at the Westside Theatre. From her first sparkle kit inspired by Karen Carpenter to a career that's taken her from rock arenas to Broadway pits, Dena shares a powerful story about perseverance, adaptability, and passion.Dena spent nearly two decades with the all-female rock band Antigone Rising, logging more than 260 shows a year, signing with Lava/Atlantic Records, and sharing bills with bands like Aerosmith, the Rolling Stones, and The Bangles. Along the way, she learned the grind of life on the road, the frustration of being pigeonholed as “girl music,” and the discipline that comes from playing night after night. Those experiences became the foundation for her eventual move to Broadway. Her first Broadway chair came in Head Over Heels, the Go-Go's jukebox musical that featured an all-female band. From there, Dena's career expanded into multiple productions, including Kristin Chenoweth: For the Girls, The Cher Show (as a sub), Magic Mike the Musical (Broadway Lab), and her current run in Little Shop of Horrors. She also subs on Hamilton, Six, and at the origial run of Beetlejuice. In our conversation, Dena opens up about the realities of the pit:* Why no two shows are ever the same and why you can never “phone it in”* The discipline it takes to stay fully present eight times a week* How playing in Antigone Rising prepared her for the demands of Broadway* What she looks for when hiring subs and why paying it forward matters* The role of Ableton, click tracks, and sound cues in modern Broadway drumming* Her full gear setup: Pearl drums, Zildjian cymbals, Evans heads, Promark sticks, and custom in-ears* Why she always keeps charts in front of her—even after memorizing the showDena also talks about the surreal moment of playing on stage with the Go-Go's, interviewing Gina Schock for Modern Drummer, and what it feels like to see the Head Over Heels Playbill now preserved in the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. This is a conversation filled with honesty, humor, and hard-won lessons for any drummer dreaming of breaking into Broadway—or simply learning how to thrive in the unpredictable world of live performance. For more about Dena: https://www.denatauriello.comClayton Craddock founded Broadway Drumming 101, an in-depth online platform offering specialized mentorship and a carefully curated collection of resources tailored for aspiring and professional musicians.Clayton's Broadway and off-Broadway credits include tick, tick…BOOM!, Altar Boyz, Memphis The Musical, Lady Day at Emerson's Bar and Grill, Ain't Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations, Cats: The Jellicle Ball, and The Hippest Trip: The Soul Train Musical. Power, Pleasure, and Honor: The Temptations That Distract Us from Christ Today's Homily begins with a personal story from the seminary when, out of inexperience, . . . . . . he failed to show proper respect to a bishop by kissing his ring. This memory connects to the Gospel message where Jesus criticizes the hypocrisy of the Pharisees and scribes: they teach the truth but fail to live it out, burdening others while seeking power, honor, and recognition. The Homily challenges us not to discard the truth of the message because of flawed messengers but instead to focus on living faithfully. Hypocrisy is not only a clerical problem but one that all Christians can fall into when their actions contradict their faith. Jesus warns against the temptations of power, pleasure, and honor, urging believers to be authentic witnesses. The Blessed Mother serves as a model of humility, love, and faithfulness, pointing us to her Son and calling us to align our words with our actions. Listen to this Meditation Media. This episode of The Other Side of the Bell, featuring our own podcast host and trumpeter John Snell, is brought to you by Bob Reeves Brass. This episode also appears as a video episode on our YouTube channel, you can find it here: "Getting to know John Snell" Who is the man behind the microphone? You've been asking for a long time, 12.5 years and 138 episodes in fact, and today's the day: it's time to put John Snell himself on the other side of the bell! John is the steadfast presence at Bob Reeves Brass, from the shop to the studio to the numerous conferences and events he attends every year. Many of you have met him in person over the years, and with our increasing number of video episodes, you have a better sense for what he's like. Yet his story has only emerged in bits and pieces over all that time and all those episodes, and warrants the spotlight just as much as any of the wonderful guests who have stopped by the podcast since 2013. And who better to interview John than the gregariously awesome Vinnie Ciesielski, who was himself a guest on The Other Side of the Bell, Episode #93 back in September of 2021. Vinnie and John chat about how John grew up to follow in the footsteps of his professional trumpet-playing father, Keith Snell, yet forged his own path through his education, musical styles and interests, before a sudden complete career U-turn that proved to give him another solid professional foundation, alongside his continued passion for music. And behind it all, for the past 20+ years, there's been Bob Reeves Brass. John talks about first meeting Bob and being taken under his wing, before returning with a law degree in hand to rescue the business, provide stability for Bob and his wife into retirement, and maintaining Bob's principled approach to business and customer service. Thank you to Vinnie for encouraging the idea and bringing this episode to life, and thank you to all of our wonderful listeners and viewers for your continued support. The Temptations were one of Motown's signature vocal groups, and they remain one of the most successful R&B acts of all time. But fame and drugs corrupted them from the beginning. Lineup changes were as frequent as their chart-topping hits. Eventually their rocky road led to drug addiction, crippling paranoia, routine backstabbing, and one of the most tragic deaths in the history of the Motor City. This episode contains themes that may be disturbing to some listeners, including discussions about suicide. From the Beatles to Nirvana to Pulp Fiction and Friends, every decade used to bring a cultural reset—new sounds, new voices, new aesthetics that changed the way we dressed, talked, and thought. But for the past 25 years, that cycle stopped. Why? In this week's After Party, Jake takes us back to a time when artists shaped the culture—and breaks down how corporatization, consolidation, and the algorithm killed the artist as changemaker. Plus: a bonus section packed with receipts on music, movies, books, and the myth work we're all doing together to take it back. On Tuesday, we're bringing you a story about the Temptations and the untimely death of the great Tammi Terrell. Jake wants to know: Which musician's death is the most suspicious? Share your thoughts at 617-906-6638, disgracelandpod@gmail.com, or on socials @disgracelandpod.
