THE TEMPTATION TRAP Gordon Dabbs, PhD James 1.12-18 Trials are the hard things that happen to us. Temptations are the bad things that look good to us. James 1.12 (NLT) God blesses those who patiently endure testing and temptation. Afterward they will receive the crown of life that God has promised to those who love him. There is no testimony without the test. We cannot avoid temptation. But we can learn to recognize the trap before we crawl inside. James 1.13-15 (ESV) Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God,” for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempts no one. But each person is tempted when he is lured and enticed by his own desire. Then desire when it has conceived gives birth to sin, and sin when it is fully grown brings forth death. Pre-sin is fought with pre-decisions. Temptation gets stronger in the dark and weaker when we drag it into the light. A pre-decision is a gift your strong self presents your weak self. Hebrews 4:15 (ESV) [Jesus] in every respect has been tempted as we are. Lust of the flesh. Lust of the eyes The pride of life James 1.16-18 (NLT) So don't be misled, my dear brothers and sisters. Whatever is good and perfect is a gift coming down to us from God our Father, who created all the lights in the heavens. He never changes or casts a shifting shadow. He chose to give birth to us by giving us his true word. And we, out of all creation, became his prized possession. We encounter numerous temptations throughout our spiritual journey that challenge our faith and relationship with God. These temptations take many forms—from pride in our earthly possessions and circumstances, to blaming God or others when facing difficulties, to failing to recognize and appreciate His provision in our lives. In each case, we're called to resist these impulses and instead cultivate a heart of gratitude, trust, and humility before God.

In the opening chapter of James, trials and temptations reveal two very different paths. Trials can become places where God tests and strengthens our faith, producing steadfastness and spiritual maturity. Temptation, however, draws us through disordered desires toward sin and ultimately death. The wisdom of God teaches us how to recognize the difference and respond faithfully. Our instinct is often to escape pressure as quickly as possible, but the pressure of a trial may be the very thing God is using to form something deeper within us. Instead of only asking God to remove the difficulty, James invites us to look beyond the pain and recognize what God may be producing through it. When temptation comes, wisdom also calls us to look within and identify the desires, patterns, and behaviors that repeatedly lure us toward sin. Finally, James directs our eyes above, reminding us that every good and perfect gift comes from a Father who does not change. We can navigate trials and temptation by looking ahead, looking within, and fixing our eyes on Jesus.
