Daniel, Shahbaz, & Anthony review Barry Jenkins' MUFASA: THE LION KING, a prequel and sequel to the 2019 remake of the 1994 film The Lion King. Exploring the unlikely rise of the beloved king of the Pride Lands, Mufasa: The Lion King enlists Rafiki to relay the legend of Mufasa to young lion cub Kiara, daughter of Simba and Nala, with Timon and Pumbaa lending their signature schtick. Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka—the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny—their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe. It stars the voices of Aaron Pierre, Kelvin Harrison Jr., John Kani, Tiffany Boone, Kagiso Lediga, Preston Nyman, Mads Mikkelsen, Thandiwe Newton, Lennie James, Anika Noni Rose, Keith David, Seth Rogen, Billy Eichner, Donald Glover, Blue Ivy Carter, Braelyn Rankins, Theo Somolu, Folake Olowofoyeku, Joanna Jones, Thuso Mbedu, Sheila Atim, Abdul Salis, Dominique Jennings and Beyoncé Knowles-Carter. Mufasa: The Lion King releases December 20, 2024 exclusively in theatres. The Woman King Costume Designer Gersha Phillips Design The tactile & gorgeous costume's!  Oscar winner Viola Davis leads a strong cast into battle in an epic from Gina Prince-Bythewood, inspired by real women warriors. Davis is absolutely mesmerizing as the Agojie's strategist warrior. Costume designer Gersha Phillips outfitted a literal army for “The Woman King.” The film, which premiered at the Toronto Film Festival ahead of its theatrical release, stars Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu and Lashana Lynch. Bolstered by strong critical reviews, the film is already part of the awards conversation heading into fall. Set in the 1820s, the historical film tells the story of the Agojie, a group of female warriors who protected the West African kingdom of Dahomey. Phillips was familiar with the concept, having assisted Ruth Carter with research on “Black Panther,” which featured a group of fictional female warriors called the Dora Milaje. “The pitch [for ‘The Woman King'] came as ‘this is the story about the real Dora Milaje,'” Phillips says. Outfitting an army meant creating visual cues to differentiate levels of status and affluence. Signals of wealth in the kingdom included numerous layers of fabrics and jewelry piled onto the body. Your hosts touch on it a bit during the podcast but not a lot. We are here to talk about the movie itself, have fun, and joke around a bit. The Woman King is a great film. Great acting, amazing sets, incredible costumes, and a wonderful story. It is honestly difficult to make a better film. Mike and Matt both agree this is a must see film especially if you can make it to the theaters. They both award The Woman King 4 out of 5 Reels.

When I heard they were making a movie called The Woman King starring Viola Davis, I figured it had to be a documentary. Viola Davis is undoubtedly the woman king of Hollywood thanks to her Academy Award Winning acting ability, but The Woman King is not a documentary. Instead, Viola Davis co-stars with Lashana Lynch, John Boyega, Thuso Mbedu, and more in the fierce and smashmouth true story of the Agojie warriors. “Based on a true story” movies are always a toss-up. So, I had to check it out to see if it fell into the same formulaic traps as other “based on a true story” films or if it used that powerful blade of Viola Davis' to carve a new path altogether. Ain't nothin' in the rulebook says a woman can't be king. That's right, this week we're discussing The Woman King, the latest film from Gina Prince-Bythewood, director of Love and Basketball and The Old Guard. Her latest is an action war epic released through Sony and starring Viola Davis as the seasoned leader of an all-female warrior unit protecting the West African kingdom of Dahomey in 1820. Lashana Lynch plays one of her most gifted fighters, along with Thuso Mbedu as the troublesome upstart who just started her training and John Boyega as their contemplative king. We kick off the show with a brief discussion of Clerks III, and we have to apologize for some audio issues that came up during the recording that we couldn't fully fix. Director: Gina Prince-Bythewood Screenwriter: Dana Stevens, Maria Bello Starring: Viola Davis, Thuso Mbedu, Lashana Lynch, Sheila Atim, John Boyega Runtime: 2 hour 15 minutes Synopsis: A historical epic that is based in alternate history of The Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states of Africa in the 18th and 19th centuries. Overall The Woman King is a good/great movie. It highlights the importance of lighting and shooting black people in film properly. The A plot is extremely strong. And it has an ensemble cast that rises to the moment and delivers. Where Kriss and Ro disagree on this film is the B & C plots. For Kriss they were unnecessary and took away from the A plot. For Ro, not so much. Both agree the editing, especially in the second half of the film doesn't help. Despite that this is still a film most will enjoy and folks should go see.   Like what you hear?
