This week's IBJ Podcast features a conversation from our Forty Under 40 awards breakfast last week with Maureen Weber, the winner of this year's Alumni Award. Maureen was originally a Forty Under 40 honoree in 2010. Back then, she had just finished reorganizing the Indiana Department of Education and had taken a job as director of community outreach and engagement at Clarian Health, now Indiana University Health. Sixteen years later, Maureen is president and CEO of Early Learning Indiana. She said she took the job because she saw the opportunity to transform the lives of young children, especially vulnerable ones. IBJ Editor Lesley Weidenbener talked with Maureen on stage about the work Early Learning Indiana is doing today and about leadership and learning from failure. You can read more about Maureen and see our latest Forty Under 40 class here.

Creating new colleges, new college programs, and growing enrollment is not an easy task in our current academic environment. Building enrollment for a brand-new academic program is one of higher education's toughest challenges. Yet, the University of Oklahoma's Polytechnic Institute (UOPI) successfully recruited its first class by flipping the traditional mindset. Instead of expecting students to be "college ready," they designed their programs to be "student ready." In this episode of Changing Higher Ed®, Dr. Teri Reed, inaugural director of the University of Oklahoma Polytechnic Institute at OU Tulsa and veteran creator of innovative engineering education programs, shares insights on launching new academic programs and colleges, revealing how strategic partnerships with Google and local community colleges helped launch new degrees that attract students to high-demand fields like cybersecurity and artificial intelligence. Podcast Overview Industry-Driven Program Design Extensive consultation with industry partners identified skills gaps, particularly in applied technical fields. Curriculum development focused on producing "industry ready" graduates. Programs include cybersecurity, applied artificial intelligence, and software development integration. Industry certifications embedded within courses to enhance graduate employability. Strategic Faculty Recruitment and Structure Innovative group interview process to ensure a collaborative mindset. Faculty hired across disciplines to prevent silos. Over 200 years of combined industry experience among 10 faculty members. Integration of industry professionals as university affiliates (including a current Google employee). Continuous Improvement: Curriculum Agility and Innovation Annual curriculum reviews and updates based on industry feedback. Willingness to modify programs multiple times per year to stay current. Two faculty "owners" per course to encourage collaboration and innovation. Focus on cross-disciplinary integration rather than traditional departmental structures. Strategic Partnerships Close collaboration with local community colleges for seamless transfers. The "Intentional swirling" approach allows students to progress while completing associate degrees. Industry partnerships inform curriculum and provide real-world expertise. Marketing and communication strategies to build program awareness. Creating Programs Focused on Student Success "Student ready" philosophy rather than the traditional "college ready" approach. Emphasis on meeting students where they are academically. Focus on reducing time-to-degree completion. Integration of industry certifications within coursework. Three Takeaways for University Presidents and Boards Listen broadly, especially to stakeholders who don't typically feel heard. Be bold in creating unique programs that differ from traditional approaches. Embrace opportunities in the high-tech world and move quickly to implement changes. Bonus Takeaway from Dr. McNaughton Hire faculty and staff who embrace change and are willing to continuously update curriculum based on industry needs. Wrapping Up This case study of the OU Polytechnic Institute provides valuable insights for higher education leaders looking to develop new programs that build enrollment and meet industry needs while maintaining academic rigor and ensuring student success. #HigherEducation #HigherEdEnrollment #HigherEducationPodcast Read the show transcript on our website: https://changinghighered.com/launching-new-college-programs-that-build-enrollment/ About Our Podcast Guest Teri K. Hasan was born in Brooklyn, New York, and graduated summa cum laude from Morehouse College with a BA in history in 1994. At Morehouse, he was initiated into the Pi Chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He earned a PhD in American history with a specialization in African American history from Duke University in 2002. He taught for a year at the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, before joining the faculty at The Ohio State University in 2003. Hasan is the author of Bloody Lowndes: Civil Rights and Black Power in Alabama's Black Belt, which tells the remarkable story of the African American freedom movement in Lowndes County, Alabama, the birthplace of Black Power. He is also the editor of Understanding and Teaching the Civil Rights Movement, a collection of essays by leading civil rights scholars and teachers that explores how to teach the Civil Rights Movement accurately and effectively. Hasan's current book project, In the Shadow of Civil Rights, examines the Black experience in New York City from 1977 to 1993. It connects key political and cultural events, such as the youth rebellion in the South Bronx, to the evolution and implementation of public policies that changed Black communities forever, such as those that undergird the war on drugs. The book aims to provide a new narrative of the Black experience in the post-civil rights era. Hasan has worked on several public history projects. From 2010 to 2014, he was the lead historian and primary scriptwriter for the $27 million renovation of the National Civil Rights Museum at the Lorraine Hotel in Memphis, Tennessee, the site of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. He hosts the podcast “Teaching Hard History,” a production of the Southern Poverty Law Center's educational division, Teaching Tolerance. And he regularly shares his knowledge of African American history and contemporary Black politics with the public through lectures, workshops, op-eds, and radio and television interviews. He has also contributed to several documentary film projects as a featured on-camera scholar, including the Emmy nominated, four-hour, PBS documentary Black America Since MLK. Hasan consults regularly with school districts on developing anti-racism programming. This work includes conducting professional development workshops for teachers, speaking to student assemblies, and developing inclusive curricular centered on social studies. In the classroom, Hasan takes great pride in opening students' minds to new ways of understanding the past and the present. This has led him to push the very boundaries of what we think of as a classroom, including taking small groups of undergraduates to James Madison's Montpelier, the Virginia plantation home of the nation's fourth president, to explore the history of race and racism in America from slavery through the present. For his pedagogical creativity and effectiveness, he has received Ohio State's Alumni Award for Distinguished Teaching, the university's highest award to teaching, and the Ohio State University College of Arts and Sciences Outstanding Teaching Award. Hasan resides in Columbus and enjoys traveling to the South to visit friends and returning to Brooklyn to visit family. View Professor Jeffries' discussion about African American history here. “Ultimately the sound is almost irrelevant to the musical experience, with the important caveat that what matters about the sound is the psychological process it triggers in the mind of the listener. So it obviously plays an important role there, but what really matters is how it's being perceived and how it's being heard. So if there's something like a gesture that can change the perception, then you have changed the music, because music is something that really exists only in the mind of the listener.” -- Dr. Michael Schutz This episode's guest is the Associate Professor of Music Cognition/Percussion at McMaster University. Drawing on his interdisciplinary training in music, psychology, and computer science, he directs the MAPLE Lab, which researches Music, Acoustics, Perception, and Learning, while also conducting the McMaster Percussion Ensemble and serving on faculty at the Honors Music Institute in Pennsylvania. Designated a "University Scholar" in recognition of his innovative merging of music performance and perception, he's received the Ontario Early Researcher Award and the 2019 Alumni Award from the Penn State School of Music, as well as numerous grants to support his research. Before McMaster, he spent five years as Director of Percussion Studies at Longwood University, taught percussion at Virginia Commonwealth University, and performed frequently with symphonies. His https://youtu.be/Ap8geRll6F0/ (TEDx Talk “Death by Beep”) is now available on the TED website and the below YouTube link. His name is Dr. Michael Schutz and you'll want to hear his suggestions about how to fix a very real problem that's happening right now in hospitals all over the world. As always, if you have any questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter (on the http://www.audiobrandingpodcast.com/ (www.audiobrandingpodcast.com) webpage) will let you know when the new podcasts are available. Listening to the Echoes The show starts with Dr. Schutz recounting a memorable early experience with sound, how he first discovered the mystery of echoes as a child by dropping his lunchbox and listening to the sound bounce off a neighbor's house, and then the day that he received his first drumset, a Rototom that sparked his passion for music. “I just remember,” he recalls, “at the moment thinking that there's something really fascinating about these percussive musical sounds.” Questions of Psychology We continue with his introduction to psychology, and how his early skepticism about the importance of body language while playing the marimba gave way to the understanding that music and psychology have a lot in common, and that in some ways music stands at the forefront of psychology. “I realized,” he tells us, “that a lot of the things that we spend a lot of time exploring as musicians are, essentially, you can think about them as questions of psychology.” Magic Between the Ears Dr. Schutz goes on to talk about the McGurk Effect, a dramatic example of how what we're seeing can quite literally change the way we perceive sound, and the surprisingly complex and active role that the listener plays in a musical performance. "Music is something that really exists only inside the mind of the listener," he explains. "Outside our minds, it's a bunch of sound waves, a bunch of air molecules bumping together. The magic happens between the ears." A Musical Perspective The first part of our interview concludes with a look at the limitations of audio research and how his team is working to bring a musical perspective into the medical field and find ways to reduce the stress, turmoil, and even accidental deaths that hospital alarms can still cause. “The...

She is passionate about teaching on the postgraduate diploma in business administration (Māori development) where she specializes in management and governance.Quotes From This Episode"I adamantly believe we cannot shoehorn indigenous leadership theory into Western theories. The best that Western theories can do is illuminate some aspect of indigenous leadership, because indigenous leadership is a whole belief system, a whole philosophy/ontology - it's a way of life.""The invitation of indigenous holistic thinking is to enter a spherical world that's more rounded, where we show up as whole people. And I guess it is that world of both/and. It's more interwoven, relational - about the group relationships, group harmony, and group accomplishments, and process orientation.""It comes back to our deep sense of belonging. Belonging, not only to our families, our friends, our communities, but belonging to a place and belonging to the world and to the planet as well. So it really deepens this idea of what it means to belong.""So we make the difference between sphere intelligence and square intelligence - square intelligence being cells and spreadsheets - that rational logic that can really dictate our path. Instead of stepping back and pausing, and just having that time to reflect and look around and tap into the wisdom within us as well."Resources Mentioned in This EpisodeChellie's WebsiteTED Talk - Wayfinding LeadershipBook - Wayfinding LeadershipBook - Kazuo Ishiguro, and It's Klara in the SunBook - Midnight LibraryPoem - The Mystery by AmerginI am the wind that breathes upon the seaI am the wave of the oceanI am the murmur of the billowsI am the ox of the seven combatsI am the vulture upon the rocksI am a beam of the sunI am the fairest of plantsI am a wild boar in valourI am a salmon in the waterI am a lake in the plainI am a word of scienceI am the point of the lance of battleI am the God who created in the head the fireWho is it who throws light into the meeting on the mountain?Who announces the ages of the moon?Who teaches the place where couches the sun? Building several successful enterprises while living with undiagnosed ADHD is a tough endeavor, but it can also be an interesting take on life. In this first episode of Before IT Happened, our host Donna Loughlin talks to marketing expert, entrepreneur, and best-selling author Peter Shankman. Peter was a founding editor of AOL News before we'd ever heard of online journalism. He leaned into the early dot-com boom by launching Geek Factory, one of the first PR firms designed to put a spotlight on the tech visionaries of the era. He later created HARO, a database used to connect journalists and sources around the world. He sold both Geek Factory and HARO, but he didn't stop there. His ADHD diagnosis has led him to a bigger understanding of life reflected in his best-selling book “Faster Than Normal” and his more recent undertaking helping companies understand neurodiversity. Listen now to hear Peter's unique journey from academic cautionary tale to a multimedia juggernaut by turning his ADHD brain into a superpower. Before any world-changing innovation there was a moment, an event, a realization that sparked the idea before it happened. This is a podcast about that moment — about that idea. Before IT Happened takes you on a journey with the innovators who imagined — and are still imagining — our future. Join host Donna Loughlin as her guests tell their stories of how they brought their visions to life. Jump straight into: (03:10) - Peter's artistic upbringing with undiagnosed ADHD and how journalism at Boston University saved him - “To go from being on academic probation for two and a half straight years to receiving BU's Alumni Award was a nice moment.” (07:48) - Building a newsroom for AOL in the early internet days - “AOL was the internet, no question about it. I was so early in the game, I actually had peter@aol.com, which was amazing.” (11:10) - Starting Geek Factory - “I called my mom and I said, ‘I'm going to go out on my own, I'm going to try to start a PR firm and when it fails, I'll get a job.'” (13:14) - The story behind Peter's journalism mailing list HARO (Help a Reporter Out) - “Originally it was a Facebook group, and that led to the formation of HARO. It blew up beyond my wildest dreams. I got very very lucky.” (15:29) - Getting acquired by Vocus and Peter's first hours as a multimillionaire - “It probably took about five months from initial contact to acquisition. If we didn't have lawyers, it would have taken a week.” (17:23) - The secret to becoming hyper-focused - “I rock at what I'm good at and I let other people do what I suck at because they just do it so much better than I ever could.” (20:13) - Peter's ADHD diagnosis and how it helped him get a new understanding of life - “I'm very happy. I'm very fortunate. I think that all the mistakes and all the screw-ups, everything I've done has led me to this point.” (26:09) - Using skydiving as a drug - “It is the ultimate reboot. I can't get back on the plane, I can't stop and redo it. I will either make the decision to live or I'll make the decision to die. Life doesn't get simpler than those 45 to 60 seconds of free fall.” (28:33) - All things Shankman: How Peter manages a whole ecosystem of projects - “All I'm really doing is I'm telling stories about things I love and I am so ridiculously blessed that I get paid to tell stories about things I love.” (31:13) - Helping companies be neurodiverse friendly - “The goal is to understand what the neuro-diverse person needs and to teach companies how to be more understanding.” (33:19) - Faster Than Normal, Peter's future projects and the best advice he ever received - “Basically everything I have and all the success I've had has come from the fact that I listen.” Episode Resources Connect with Peter at https://www.shankman.com/ (Shankman.com) Read Peter Shankman's book https://www.amazon.com/Faster-Than-Normal-audiobook/dp/B07648CSNN (Faster Than Normal) Listen to Peter Shankman's...

Hello and you're listening to another episode of the Migration & Diaspora Podcast, powered by Homelands Advisory. Today, we've got Peter Kwok with us, who is the Chair of both the newly-formed Global Diaspora Confederation and the UK Federation of Chinese Professionals. Peter is originally from Hong Kong but has spent much of his career and life in the UK. In addition to his chairpersonships, he is also involved in 10 other diaspora associations and has held board positions at a further six community organisations in the UK and China. He has advised public, private and third sectors, including the Scottish Government, local councils, universities, and SMEs on diaspora strategies. Peter received the Alumni Award for Excellence in Achievement from Cranfield University in 2019 and the Freedom of the City of Glasgow award in 2020. He was nominated Finalist for Charity Chair of the Year in the UK for his contributions to global diasporas. We've got a dual episode for you today. We start by discussing something that's very personal to me, which is the Chinese diaspora in the UK, of which I'm a proud member, and the UK Federation of Chinese Professionals' work to support our community. We talk about how the Federation functions and Peter's own learnings from his vast experience supporting the Chinese and Southeast Asian diasporas across the UK. We then move onto Peter's more recent work cooperating with diaspora organisations across the world, which has led to his latest project to pioneer the new Global Diaspora Confederation. Peter is a very driven, insightful and passionate diaspora advocate and so without further ado, sit back (or continue running, cooking, or whatever you do while listening to this podcast), and enjoy the interview! Racism in the United States as well as other countries continues, not just through overt public discourse, but also in its overall system - in housing, banking, schooling, policing, etc. These policies especially affect African-Americans, as well as indigenous people and other people of colour. As Dr. Robert C. Smith, professor emeritus of political science at San Francisco State University explained in his 2010 book Conservatism and Racism, and Why in America They Are the Same, policies that racially discriminate at ground level have found a home in the last half century in the Conservative movement. This has been their means of winning elections and supporters, from Barry Goldwater to Ronald Reagan, from Richard Cheney to Donald Trump. Even progressives have supported policies that end up hurting African-Americans and other minorities in the USA. It's not just what you say, but the end result of your actions that can constitute racism. And after decades of conservative policies on housing, jobs, policing, incarceration, the war on drugs, etc. have disproportionately impacted African-Americans. Can this ever change? Will progressive movements that are anti-racist in nature win the day instead? Listen in to find out! Dr. Robert C. Smith Bio: Robert C. Smith is professor of political science at San Francisco State University. An honors graduate of the University of California, Berkeley, he holds a master’s degree from UCLA and the Ph.D. from Howard. He is author or co-author of scores of articles and essays and ten books including Race, Class and Culture: A Study in Afro-American Mass Opinion; Racism in the Post-Civil Rights Era: Now You See It, Now You Don’t; We Have No Leaders: African Americans in the Post-Civil Rights Era; African American Leadership; Contemporary Controversies and the American Racial Divide; Conservatism and Racism and Why in America They Are the Same; John F. Kennedy, Barack Obama and the Politics of Ethnic Incorporation and Avoidance, What has This Got to Do With the Liberation of Black People?: The Impact of Ronald W. Walters on African American Thought and Leadership and Polarization and the Presidency: From FDR to Barack Obama. He is former associate editor of the National Political Science Review and general editor of the State University of New York Press African American Studies series. He has taught African American politics and American government for more than thirty-five years. Professor Smith is co-author of a leading textbook in the field (American Politics and the African American Quest for Universal Freedom) and the Encyclopedia of African American Politics. He is currently writing a biography of Ronald Walters, his mentor and longtime Howard University professor who he argues is the most consequential African American political scientist of the last half century. In addition to his teaching and research, Professor Smith appears frequently on local and national radio and television programs analyzing American and African American politics. In 1998 he was recipient of Howard University’s Distinguished Ph.D. Alumni Award. In addition, Dr. Smith's book, From the Bayou to the Bay: Autobiography of a Black Liberation Scholar was published earlier this year by SUNY or State University of New York Press. And - exciting news! - later this year Dr. Smith's book How Character Shaped the Trump Presidency will be published by Lynne Rienner Publishers. Stacey Green began her tenure at Stockton Grade School (SGS) as a new principal with an ambitious goal: transform the school's culture from an isolated, individual classroom focus to an integrated, responsive, and collaborative environment where teachers lead with the whole child and the whole school in mind. In just six years, Green has had remarkable success, not only because of her individual talents, but because of her belief that change happens when leaders “empower others to remove barriers and transform problems into opportunities.” Green has used this approach to lead SGS through the Kansas School Redesign process, earning the distinction of being named a Kansas Mercury School in 2017. On the path toward personalizing student learning, Green has supported teachers in aligning with school vision and purpose through personalized professional development. SGS teachers have since embraced trauma-informed practices, increasing connection with students across experiences, and improving staff's capacity for mutual support, self-care, and vicarious trauma prevention. Today, SGS is known for high community and family engagement, regularly hosting visits and presenting at conferences on the power of redesigning instruction through research and evidenced-based practices. Green holds an M.S. from Fort Hays State University and a B.A. from Bethany College. Stacey was recently awarded the Kansas District V Distinguished Principal, the Kansas National Distinguished Principal Class of 2020, and a Bethany College 2020 Alumni Award of Merit. Stacey is the wife of Kirk and they recently celebrated their 30th wedding anniversary. They have two children, Audrey, husband, Cory, and granddaughter, Lola, and a son, Joel. 'Trigger Warning' if you or someone you know has been affected by sexual abuse please remember the Dublin Rape Crisis Centre 24-Hour Helpline 1800 77 888In this week’s podcast, we talk to Maeve Lewis, the CEO of One in Four. One in four currently provides supports to adult survivors of childhood sexual abuse. They have an advocacy team to support those lucky enough to make it to court and this service is free. Their help extends to families and partners, which is recognised as invaluable for recovery and leads to a higher level of support for victims. One in four also provide a two-year prevention programme for sex offenders many of whom are referred to them by the Gardai.Maeve Lewis (Bachelor of Arts in European Studies, H. Dip. Ed, BA (Hons) in Psychology) has worked in the field of sexual violence since 1979 in a variety of roles and in 2019 she was the winner of Outstanding Contribution to Society Award by the University of Limerick 2019 Alumni Award. Maeve is dedicated to protecting victims of sexual abuse. Her overall commitment to fight against what can only be described as unsurmountable obstacles in finding the resources to help victims receive help and embark on what is a long and painful journey to self-discovery is unquestionable. She continues to demand justice and fairness for all victims facing the justice system and challenge those agencies responsible for providing supports to do better. We hope that this series of interviews help highlight the supports that currently exist, the struggles they face daily to deliver these services and to further emphasize the lack of country wide supports. This demonstrates both the lack of will from our government to take this crime seriously and the need for those in power to understand the impacts of this crime, not only on its victims but on society as a whole. Hopefully we can unite and get the results we need to tackle sexual abuse and all that goes with that. Take careJoyce, June and Paula

Her subjects—from professors to lawyers to caregivers to nurses—have been wrung out by a system that doesn't support them, and enriches only a tiny elite. Squeezed is an eye-opening page-turner. Powerfully argued, deeply reported, and ultimately hopeful, it casts a bright, clarifying light on families struggling to thrive in an economy that holds too few options.

Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani joined the worms in podcast studio 1-A for the latest podcast. After meeting her and chatting with her via Skype, we can easily say Cynthia is our favorite Italian dentist. She is a very successful dentist in the Bay Area— and we can totally see why! Not only is she very knowledgeable, focused, driven— all of those make for a great dentist, of course. But what really resonated with us is her quote, "Smile often and see what happens." That is a great philosophy for a dentist to embrace. For everyone to embrace, really. It was a pleasure having Dr. Brattesani as our guest for this podcast. We had so much fun getting to know her story! Thank you, Cynthia! Until next time— From Cynthia's website, which can be found at http://www.drcynthiab.com/ Dr. Cynthia K. Brattesani, DDS, is fast becoming one of the best-known figures in the dental industry. She has written dozens of articles for professional journals and websites including Dental Economics, Dentistry Today, SideKick, Women's Dental Journal, and she is a frequent lecturer at conferences and dental schools on a variety of topics.. Dr. Brattesani received her Doctor of Dental Surgery from the University of California, San Francisco, in 1989, and joined the practice of her brother, Steven J. Brattesani in San Francisco and Dr. William van Dyk in the East Bay as an associate the same year. After working as an associate for more than a decade, Dr. Brattesani opened her own practice in 2002, and it has become one of the fastest-growing dental practices in the Bay area since then. She has been the recipient of numerous awards, including the American Dental Association's "Golden Apple" Award for Outstanding New Dentist Leader in 1996, and the U.S. Medal of Merit for outstanding public service for the City of San Francisco Earthquake. In 2015 she was honored with the UCSF 150th Anniversary Alumni Award. She has served in many positions and remains an active member of The American Dental Association (ADA), the California Dental Association (CDA), and the San Francisco Dental Society (SFDS) of which she served as president. Very early in her career, she became a fellow of the American College of Dentists, the International College of Dentists and the Pierre Fauchard Academy. Dr. Brattesani's passion is innovation serving on many advisory dental boards. Dedicated to the advancement of dentistry, she is a proud member of the Spear Education Faculty Club requiring hundreds of hour of continuing education. In 2013 she was appointed to the Management Committee of CDA Cares -- managing a dental clinic providing millions of dollars of free dentistry to thousands of the undeserved population. Dr Brattesani was recently quoted in a local dental newsletter stating: “Volunteering for me is a matter of the heart. It offers gifts often disguising themselves in the actual work. It offers me a lesson of humility and the value of courage to make me stand in something that I truly believe in. Volunteering together for the common good allows me to recognize what is truly extraordinary in the world. And once you open your heart----there is no turning back." In 2015, she was honored with the UCSF 150th Alumni Award, an honor of great distinction.
