Area/TopicConservation, Voluntourism, Human ConnectionChris BraunlichBoard Chair and CEOConservation Volunteers International ProgramChris is Board Chair and Chief Executive Officer of Conservation Volunteers International Program. She has a bachelor's degree in economics and an MBA in finance from the University of California at Berkeley. Prior to retirement, she spent her career working in banking and in finance in the corporate world. How did a person with degrees in economics and finance "end up" volunteering as CEO for an environmental conservation nonprofit? She always loved the outdoors, she has volunteered since she was in high school, and she prefers doing to talking. Brought up in a time when children were free-range, Chris rode her bike, climbed trees, scrambled among the rocks along the ocean cliffs - outdoors was fun, freedom, inner peace. In college her husband introduced her to backpacking, and once they figured out how a 5'3" woman could happily hike with a man who had a 6'3" stride, hiking in the mountains with her husband became her favorite getaway. https://conservationvip.org/summaryChris Braunlich is the board chair and CEO of Conservation Volunteers International Program (Conservation VIP), a nonprofit organization dedicated to helping sustain landscapes, cultural heritage sites, and biodiversity. The organization focuses on international volunteering and runs programs in various destinations. They rely on revenue from volunteers who participate in their trips and also accept donations. Conservation VIP aims to preserve and protect important places and projects, and they align volunteers with tasks that match their skills and abilities. The organization emphasizes the importance of good trails and the responsibility of global citizens to contribute to conservation efforts. Public lands, such as national parks, are precious places that are increasingly appreciated as urbanization limits access to natural spaces. The maintenance of national parks is a significant challenge, with an estimated $22 billion needed for maintenance in US national parks alone. National parks play a crucial role in protecting biodiversity and preserving natural habitats. However, it is important to balance human access with the need to protect and preserve the natural environment. There is an opportunity for tour operators to partner with conservation organizations to offer trips that incorporate volunteer work and conservation efforts.takeawaysConservation VIP is a nonprofit organization dedicated to sustaining landscapes, cultural heritage sites, and biodiversity. The organization relies on revenue from volunteers who participate in their trips and also accepts donations.Conservation VIP aligns volunteers with tasks that match their skills and abilities. The organization emphasizes the importance of good trails and the responsibility of global citizens to contribute to conservation efforts. We have a flipped episode this week with Sarah Stremming of Cog Dog Radio interviewing me. We're talking about the new paper out of the Dog Aging Project, "Lifetime Prevalence of Owner-Reported Medical Conditions in the 25 Most Common Dog Breeds in the Dog Aging Project Pack." There's been a lot of buzz on social media about this paper and we wanted to dig in to its findings.

In this episode, Divya speaks with Mathew Mabele. Mathew is a Conservation Social Scientist, currently appointed as a lecturer in the Department of Geography at the University of Dodoma in Tanzania. Mathew's research uses the lenses of political ecology and decolonial thinking to shed light on the systemic structures and processes driving socio-ecological injustices. His work explicitly focuses on knowledge systems, power, and politics over framings of concepts such as biodiversity conservation, protected areas, human-wildlife coexistence, and sustainability. Divya discusses Mathew's work on decolonizing conservation research in Tanzania. This conversation was based on Mathew's recent work highlighting the challenges of representation and the impacts of the global North funding on conservation research in the global South. Mathew's balanced perspective resonates throughout the discussion—not anti-global North, but rather, a call to recalibrate research practices for greater inclusivity and justice. The conversation concludes with a discussion on Mathew's other ongoing collaboration on the Convivial Conservation project, where he has collaborated with a large group of scholars to chart pathways for a socially just, democratic, and inclusive form of biodiversity governance.

Cornered rat Trump is lashing out on "Truth" Social. Shitler's rape-case will be decided with an anonymous jury. Man-baby's former White House aides don't have executive privilege. An anti-LGBTQ bill in Uganda has a connection to the U.S. GOP. Republican state rep Chris Miller blathered we shouldn't worry about climate change because God made trees. A parent in Utah proposed banning the Bible because of all the violence. Trumpkin Kayleigh McEnany resurfaced briefly only to be admonished by the MAGA-verse for saying something remotely positive about Mike Pence. Conserv-a-troll Lindsey Graham was called out by the Senate Ethics Committee. Faithless Friday wouldn't be complete without an appearance by MAGAT pastor Greg Locke who of course is still at war with Satan and neighbor Larry.

The Biden speech destroyed the GOP and Trump claims he'll give DNA, gross. Blotch Nazi Steve Bannon blasted Governor Sarah Huckabee for not being intellectually capable regarding her response to Biden's State Of the Union address. Alleged rapist and former POTUS Donald Trump accused Ron Desantis, the totalitarian Czar of Florida, of being a groomer. King of Pillows, Mike Lindell, is very perturbed over DeSantis praising the lawyer suing Trump and farter Rudy Guilliani for defamation. The Turkish people are angered over Erdogan's slow response to the massive earthquake that has killed over 20,000 so far. JEEBUS superfan and MAGAT pastor Shane Vaughn blathered, "When you do not support the man that God has ordained for the job, you are a Judas." Conserv-a-wanker Rick Scarborough has an evil plan to take over school boards. Newly elected GOP House member and liar extraordinaire George Santos was charged with writing bad checks to buy dogs.

Founded in 2013, Conserv Congo is a non-profit conservation whose mission is to maintain the biodiversity of the Congo Basin in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Congo Basin is a vast tropical rainforest and a biodiversity hot spot which is home to 100's of mammal species. Conserv Congo puts itself on the frontlines to save and protect endangered species from poachers and wildlife traffickers, fighting the good fight every day trying to prevent extinction of wildlife. To date, Conserv Congo has over 5,140 successful cases of wildlife trafficking. Part of Conserv Congo's work includes;Investigating wildlife trafficking networksCollaborating with authorities on arresting wildlife traffickersRescuing wildlife such as apes in the region and finding sanctuary placement for the wildlifeRehabilitating injured wildlife in their natural habitatSupporting subsistence farming to ensure food security in regions where poaching of wildlife occurs due to hungerEducation in the communities about the importance of conservationPrior to creating Conserv Congo, Adams was an investigative journalist turned wildlife crimes investigator. In 2020, Adams was awarded the National Geographic Emerging Explorer Award. This award goes to trailblazers making extraordinary contributions in the world and in Adams' case to conservation. I met Adams in 2019 at a rally in Washington D.C. to help stop baby elephants being taken from their herd in Zimbabwe to live in a zoo in China. Adams gave an inspirational speech about elephants in the wild and how their presence is so important for the ecosystem and the whole world. Wherever Adams goes, he is always making an impact for the wildlife. In this podcast with Conserv Congo we learn:How Conserv Congo became the first organization in civil society in the DRC committed to fighting wildlife trafficking. Why the Congo Basin is an important biodiversity hotspot not only for the wildlife but also for the entire planet. The cultural history of the DRC and its belief of interconnection and interdependence with nature and how this is important for us to understand today. How Adams Cassinga became a wildlife criminal investigator. How Conserv Congo helped prosecute the first wildlife trafficking case in 2017.Conserv Congo's goal for 2023 to continue helping protect and preserve the wildlife.
