Mike Chen has been putting his unique spin on speculative fiction for the past few years. He wrote about going back to the future for his debut time travel novel Here and Now and Then; which was followed by A Beginning at the End about found-family after a global pandemic published in January of 2020; and then We Could Be Heroes about, well, superheroes. Mike sits down to chat with Jimmy Gaspero about his newest novel Light Years From Home, which Mike describes as an episode of The X-Files without Mulder and Scully. Mike talks to Jimmy about the inspiration for his new book, what happens when a trusted friend likes your story but tells you to start over, how Star Trek helped his family get through the current pandemic, and a little tease about his upcoming dream project Star Wars novel Brotherhood (out May 2022) about Anakin Skywalker.
Bay Area author Mike Chen reads from his new book, We Could Be Heroes. It's about a superhero and a super villain who accidentally discover each other's secret identities and decide they work better as partners.
Science Fiction Author Mike Chen joins Queries, Qualms, & Quirks this week to discuss resurrecting shelved novels, querying transitioning from paper to digital, going to acquisitions five times in 20 months, releasing a pandemic book just before a pandemic started, acquisitions nerves, drafting in layers, and getting better with every attempt. ✦ Mike Chen is the author of We Could Be Heroes, Here And Now And Then, and A Beginning At The End. Travis interviews science fiction author Mike Chen about his latest book from MIRA books, We Could Be Heroes. It's a standalone story where a superhero and supervillain accidentally meet in the same support group and decide to become friends, and it's every bit as lovely as that sounds. Mike and Travis discuss how to make the most of the Save the Cat plotting method, tricks to writing compelling and natural dialogue, and the thrill of writing an official Star Wars story. Listen to the audio trailer for Mike Chen's Star Wars short story "Disturbance". About Mike Chen: Mike Chen is the author of Here And Now And Then (a finalist for Goodreads Choice - Best Sci-Fi, CALIBA Golden Poppy, and the Compton Crook Award) and A Beginning At The End ("a brilliant, fragile path through the darkness" -- Library Journal). His short fiction is featured in Star Wars: From A Certain Point Of View -- The Empire Strikes Back, and he has covered geek culture for sites such as Tor.com, The Mary Sue, and StarTrek.com. In a previous life, he covered the NHL for Fox Sports, SB Nation, and other outlets. A member of SFWA, Mike lives in the Bay Area with his wife, daughter, and rescue animals. Author Mike Chen tells us how he got inside the Emperor’s head for his story in the new Star Wars anthology, From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. The author of acclaimed science fiction novels Here and Now and Then and A Beginning at the End, as well as the upcoming We Could Be Heroes, Mike is one of 40 scribes featured in From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back. Celebrating the 40th anniversary of the film, it features stories told from the points of view of 40 different characters, from obscure cult favourites to major players in the saga. Mike’s story, Disturbance, is told from the point of view of Emperor Palpatine himself. It explains Palpatine’s thought process leading up to his first on-screen appearance, and answers one of the biggest lingering questions in the saga – how did the Emperor find out about Luke Skywalker? A longtime friend of the show, Mike tells us about writing this iconic Star Wars villain; introducing his daughter to Star Wars; having his prose voiced by Sam Witwer and much more! From a Certain Point of View: The Empire Strikes Back is available now wherever you buy books, in print, ebook and audio. Follow @MikeChenWriter for more of his work.

Ryan Shelton may be familiar to Australian TV audiences through his in-front-of-camera work on Rove, The Hamish and Andy Show & Gap Year, the improv series Thank God You’re Here, however behind the scenes there is an even bigger body of work as a comedic writer on Chris Lilley’s ‘We Could Be Heroes’, everything 'Hamish and Andy' and most recently on the ABC series ‘It’s A Date’. He has also served as a radio host on Nova FM in a multitude of formations including the famed ‘Ryan, Monte and Wippa’ drivetime show. We discuss his day-to-day process, how he broke into television and of course his Instagram comedy series(which is deserved of cult status), Cliff.
Chris takes this solo show to share memories and discuss the legacies of Lemmy Kilmister, David Bowie, Alan Rickman and Glenn Frey. He also reflects on his long stay in New Jersey, dissects the recent appeal of vinyl and cassettes, and ponders if “Star Wars” fans are happy with the franchise’s massive… Continue reading The post CAPE 84: We Could Be Heroes… appeared first on ChrisAballo.com.
