Jon disparages Bronwyn's mother Barbara as a sex worker. In one of his final comments in his 1998 interview with police investigating the disappearance of Jon's estranged wife five years earlier, Jon's smear of the grandmother of Lauren and Chrystal goes unchallenged until now. Kim Marshall and her brother Andy emphatically reject the labelling and explain Barbara's mental illness struggles as depression took hold. A deeply personal account of Barbara's life story is told through her own statement to police. Bronwyn's long-silent sister Melissa comes forward, shedding more light on Jon's controlling nature and his jealousy of Bronwyn's relationships with her friends and siblings. Inconsistencies and omissions in Jon's 1998 account of his conversations with Bronwyn and their actions on the night of her disappearance are singled out for special attention by listeners who zero in on the detail and compare it with known evidence and Jon's earlier versions. Any time we teach our students something, we need to check to see how well they learned it. If we only do this check at the very end, after all the teaching is done, and we find that our students haven't learned the material, it's too late to do anything about it. That's why we really need to do formative assessment — checking along the way — so if there are problems, we can fix them. In this episode, we're talking about five important things we need to do to make sure we get formative assessment right. Joining me are two people who really understand what works in education: The Marshall Memo's master curator Kim Marshall, and Jenn David-Lang, the mind behind The Main Idea. While taking a proactive approach to wellness is always preferred, not everyone has that luxury. For some, taking control of your own well-being is a matter of life or death—as it is for the millions of people suffering from type 1 diabetes (T1D). No matter what their lifestyle, the body of a type 1 diabetic will never naturally produce insulin. In 2021 alone, 6.7 million people died from diabetes—that's the population of Madrid. What will it take to ease the burden on so many and support research to find a cure once and for all? Documentary filmmaker Lisa Hepner set out to find the answer. Along with her husband Guy Mossman, they created the new film “The Human Trial,” a movie over ten years in the making that explores the human side of research and the people behind it. While on the path to curing her own type 1 diabetes, Lisa was given unprecedented access to a real clinical trial involving stem cells. After her own 30-year struggle with diabetes and always hearing the cure was five years away, she decided to take things into her own hands. The documentary follows her own intimate journey in real-time, along with the other patients and scientists involved, to be the first to give this cutting-edge and ultimately uncertain treatment a try. Most of us don't have to consider the mental toll of type 1 diabetes. Not only do patients need daily injections to keep them alive, but they have to consider every potentiality to ensure they are never without access to this life-saving necessity. And that's if they can afford them: One in four Americans ration their insulin because they can't afford to use it as often as needed. While technology has come a long way in easing the burden, such as continuous glucose monitors being able to read blood sugar levels every few minutes and beam them directly to your phone or smartwatch, the process is still frustratingly manual. And T1D is one of the only diseases where the patient plays such a large role in treating themselves, which speaks to how far our healthcare has to go in supporting people with this disease. Ultimately, Lisa says this: “There is hope for a cure.” Research is heading in the right direction, it just needs funding to continue. Despite hearing for over thirty years that we are just “five years away from the cure,” based on what she's seen, Lisa truly believes it is true today.  To learn more, visit Lisa Hepner's site at http://thehumantrial.com (TheHumanTrial.com). Global Wellness Summit

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 21, 2022 63:07

What does the Global Wellness Summit have in common with one of the biggest music stars in history? Colombian Reggaeton Superstar J Balvin has been very open and honest about his struggles with anxiety and depression — as well as the wellness practices he uses to find relief. To that end, he's co-founded the development of OYE, an app designed to help everyone live better, happier lives. And, like GWS, his team relied heavily on the studies and research conducted by the Global Wellness Institute (GWI). In GWI's 2020 “https://globalwellnessinstitute.org/industry-research/defining-the-mental-wellness-economy-2020/ (Defining the Mental Wellness Economy Report),” GWI had this to say about mental wellness: “It's more than the absence of mental illness — it's the active process of moving from languishing to flourishing. It also helps shift our perspective from stigma to shared humanity. It grows out of grassroots, consumer-driven movements and is multi-dimensional, holistic, and personal.” Clearly, OYE and GWI are aligned in their vision and mission around mental wellness. In this episode, we're speaking to J Balvin's partners and co-founders at OYE: Happiness activist and CEO of OYE Mario Chamorro, and Social Impact Executive Patrick Dowd. Their shared goal is to remove the stigma associated with mental health and to teach people across the Americas how to channel mental challenges into artistic endeavors — what they call “creative wellness.” OYE is the next generation disruption in the wellness world. It is an ecosystem — starting with an app — that embodies and brings emotional and creative wellness to the world, with the purpose of helping the world feel better. In a Health Harris poll, 40% of Hispanic Americans and 29% of Black Americans rated their mental health as poor. 62% of Hispanic respondents say they know several people battling mental illness, but only 41% were committed to speaking openly about it. J Balvin's home country of Colombia is famous for pioneering magical realism, where the line between fantasy and reality is blurred. While many might see it as nothing more than a fairy tale, for Colombians, the magic is real. It informs what is possible in their lives. OYE seems rooted in this belief in magical realism and the possibility of transformation, and when you listen to our inspiring podcast guests you will believe, too, that together we can help the world feel better. This is one of the treatments that are offered at the Poppy Clinic, you can receive it as a stand-alone treatment or as part of your holistic health care. IV stands for Intravenous. It is a 40-minute session during which you are administered a customized blend of vitamins intravenously, right into your bloodstream. The advantage of getting your vitamins this way is that the digestive tract is bypassed in order for you to absorb 100% of what you are getting, you are receiving the vitamins directly, and are able to get much higher doses of the vitamins than you would ever be able to get otherwise.   Did you know that 1 of 3 people have a digestive compromise? This means that even if you are eating a great diet or taking all of your vitamins, you might not actually be digesting and absorbing everything. IV Vitamin Therapy is the treatment that helps you absorb 100% of vitamins into your system.   Benefits of IV Vitamin Therapy: - Boost your immune system - Heal from chronic disease - Fight off infections - Boost your mood - Improve sleep quality - Calm your nervous system - Health optimization - Prevention of disease - Anti-aging and collagen production boost   Reach out to the Poppy Clinic! The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) has had many guests across various fields in the wellness industry on Global Wellness Conversations, but our guest today is a first: A visual artist who uses his talent to help people fall in love with nature and be motivated to protect it. We're talking to the famed cinematographer Louie Schwartzberg. Louie's visuals—which you may be familiar with from the likes of Netflix, Disney, or National Geographic—are breathtaking and awe-inspiring, soaring above mountains and oceans and swooping down to see an insect through a drop of water on a leaf or exploring beneath the surface of the ground to see the magical network of mushrooms. He's a pioneer in time-lapse photography as well as altered speed and scale cinematography. His TED Talks have had over 53 million views on YouTube, and his goal is to make the invisible visible, to take us on journeys of time and scale… to change our perspective, touch our hearts, and move us to action. Nancy Davis, GWS executive director, had this to say about Louie: “Louie Schwartzberg is the personification of his life's work. As he captures and shares the unfolding, unimaginable grace of nature, Louie is himself a force of nature and a gift to us all. His intelligence, warmth, humor, and elegant humanity have long been signature elements of the Global Wellness Summit. Whether he's opening our eyes to the universal truth in a drop of rain, urging us to care about the planet by showing us its beauty—not diminishing its assets, or whether he's demonstrating the complex network of fungi that lies beneath our feet, Louie lives a life true to his mission to leave this world better than when he found it.” Louie explains that he is part of the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) Psychedelics & Healing Initiative to help support the exploration of this secret of nature's knowledge. As a leader in the space, Louie discusses how his work is used for a new Visual Healing program in hospitals as well as in psilocybin-assisted therapy for people suffering from addiction and trauma. As he describes working on his Netflix film, Fantastic Fungi, you'll hear how the underground mycelium network is reminiscent of the world wide web. We'll discuss Louie's origin story, what brought him to create moving pictures of nature, and how his 40-year opus, Gratitude Revealed, is really a tribute to his parents who are Holocaust survivors. This conversation not only illustrates why Louie is a part of the GWI and GWS family but also why sustainability and wellness go hand in hand and why each of us should seek out the wonder and awe in the lives we live each day.  To learn more, visit Louie Schwartzberg's site at https://movingart.com/ (MovingArt.com). When we're talking about wellness, it makes sense to start the discussion where we spend most of our time: indoors. Despite how our modern society is structured, it's important to remember that until recent history, humankind spent most of its time outside—not contained within four walls and a roof. Today humans spend roughly 90% of their time indoors and the pandemic has been a harsh reminder of how important the quality of indoor air is to our health and wellbeling. The Global Wellness Institute's 2018 report, https://globalwellnessinstitute.org/industry-research/wellness-real-estate-communities-research/ (Build Well to Live Well), is the first research to size and analyze the global and regional wellness lifestyle real estate and communities market Then in 2020 GWI's White Paper, https://globalwellnessinstitute.org/industry-research/resetting-the-world-with-wellness/ (Resetting the World With Wellness: Healthy Built Environments for Healthy People), describes how our unhealthy built environment can cause both chronic and infectious diseases like COVID-19, and it elaborates the roles that communities, businesses and governments can play in building healthier homes and communities for healthier people  This week's guest is Paul Scialla – the founder and CEO of Delos living, one of the world's premiere wellness real estate companies. We'll hear how Paul's passion for researching how to better the lived environment actually helped fuel a movement. Meeting at the intersection of technology, real estate, sustainability, medicine, research, altruism, and design, Paul will also elaborate on biophilic design – or incorporating aspects of the natural world into our indoor environments, Wellness real estate is all about complementing both LEED certification and WELL certification which focus more on the environmental impact that buildings have and taking things a step further with a people-first approach to building. After spending 18 years on Wall Street—ten of them as a partner at Goldman Sachs—his interest in sustainability and altruistic capitalism led him to found Delos and later start the International WELL Building Institute. So much of what he learned on Wall Street informs what he does now, taking an approach of mathematics and evidence to the wellness paradigm.  Delos has been merging health sciences with building sciences for over a decade, much of that research that had never been done before. They also took their hard-earned research, with over five years and over 100 million dollars of capital invested into it, and published it all for free. Today the company has projects that span every income level, from affordable housing to senior living centers to public school systems.  We discuss why Paul's passion and curiosity have led him to become an authority in the wellness and sustainability movements, what tools Delos provides to accomplish their wellness goals, the difficulty in finding the best products in air filtration, and the possibilities of creating clean environments in your own homes. The Global Wellness Summit (GWS) was launched in 2007 and modeled after the World Economic Forum. Since then it has grown to be the most influential meeting between titans of the wellness industry. Its non-profit research arm, the Global Wellness Institute (GWI) was launched in 2015. Neither organization would exist without the dedication and vision of this week's guest. Today we're talking to the co-founder, chair, and CEO of both GWS and GWI—sometimes called the Godmother of Wellness. During our conversation, you'll hear the living history of a global movement explained and find out details of Susie's incredible journey to becoming one of the most prominent voices in the world of wellness. She also details not only how her organizations were the first to identify and quantify the Global Wellness Economy and how you can access all of the free wellness resources that have resulted from the work spearheaded by Susie and her team of collaborators. When Susie started her career, there wasn't even a wellness conversation. Things like fitness, nutrition, and beauty existed in their own silos and were only brought together in places called spas. In fact, the very first Global Wellness Summit was actually called the Global Spa Summit. Despite all of the importance placed on the Summit—and it is an incredible event held in different countries each year and which this year is bringing together industry leaders to the welltech hub of Tel Aviv, Israel —you don't have to attend to benefit from the Global Wellness Institute's efforts. Part of Susie's mission is to promote research and trends that are making a difference in the world and to make much of that information available free to the public. Those research and trends range across the eleven sectors of wellness, in descending order of dollar value as of 2020: Personal Care & Beauty – $955 billion Healthy Eating & Nutrition – $946 b Physical Activity/Fitness – $738 b Wellness Tourism – $436 b Traditional & Complementary Medicine – $413 b Public Health, Preventive & Personal Medicine - $375 b Wellness Real Estate – $275 b Mental Wellness – $131 b Spas – $68 b Workplace Wellness – $49 b Hot Springs - $39 b GWS' research topic for 2022 is wellness policy. We're seeing that governments are wanting to have more direction when it comes to wellness, and the policy choices they make have a vast impact on people's lives. In the coming years, we're going to see even more how the decisions of policy play a role in our global wellness. You'll hear how Susie Ellis' recipe for success is vision, passion, and responding to a personal calling -- and how that helped grow this dynamic organization. And there's only more to come as GWS and GWI continue to recognize and research trends to identify and shape the future of the wellness industry. Nothing stops you in your tracks and brings you back to reality faster than some startling facts, such as 66% of Alzheimer's patients are women, but only 12% of the National Institute of Health Alzheimer's research budget went to women-focused research; Or how women are 50% more likely to die in the year following a heart attack than men, but only 4.5% of the NIH coronary artery disease budget went to women-focused research. Those are just a few of the realities that Carolee Lee espouses. She's the founder, CEO, and chair of Women's Health Access Matters.  She commissioned The RAND Corporation to create a series of reports showing the economic impact of accelerating women's health research. And, it is waking up the medical community faster than a strong cup of coffee. One of the top trends in global wellness this year is closing the gender gap in research with the help of tech, and Carolee is at the forefront of that. As the founder of a jewelry and accessories company which she ran for 30 years with mostly female employees, she learned firsthand that “women's health is an economic issue that none of us can afford to ignore.” Women make up half of the workforce and, even more so, make up most of the economic spending. When you look at the data it becomes clear: Women drive economies. WHAM was founded with the goal of accomplishing three things: Creating The WHAM Investigator's Fund to raise money for research, creating The WHAM Collaborative that brings together the leaders in women's health and the study of sex difference, and creating The WHAM Report, a data-driven compendium to provide the impact of increasing investment in women's health research and how it will change women's lives, their families, and the economy. WHAM is using data to uncover the gender discrepancies that exist in medical research and to underscore that without fixing those, we cannot be well as a society. Find out why nearly every woman will eventually be affected by one of four areas of medical research that WHAM is funding – brain health, heart health, autoimmune disease and cancer. Their research has already shown that research can actually change outcomes!  If you want to be a part of this important change, visit WHAM's website and see how you can help fund the future of research. How does one woman surviving an illness result in an annual event celebrated across over seven thousand locations in more than 150 countries on five continents? It starts with dreaming big—but that's only the beginning. Belgin Aksoy is a dreamer. She's the founder of Global Wellness Day, which was unveiled in 2014 at the Global Wellness Summit in Morocco. Two years later, the momentous progress of Global Wellness Day won her the Woman in Wellness award at the GWS in Austria. It is celebrated on the second Saturday of June every year. Global Wellness Day is a day dedicated to living well, holding free-of-charge educational and experiential wellness events open to the general public – like yoga, nutrition, dance, sound healing classes, etc. – that inspire people to try living smarter and living well. The purpose of the day is to recognize the value of our lives, to pause and think, to be free of the stress of everyday life, to bring nations together over a common mission, and to spread the message that wellness is more than a luxury—it's a necessity. In 2004, Belgin began facing her own health challenges when she was diagnosed with thyroid cancer. She began a personal journey to live a better life, including changing her perspective on what really matters. She changed the way she ate, exercised, and slept, and in 2012 she had turned her health around. Not only that, she was healthier than ever before. She knew that the universe had given her something special, and she had to find a way to give back. The theme for this year's Global Wellness Day is “Think Magenta.” After the last few years have been so gray and bleak, we need a bit of color in our lives. Global Wellness Day's worldwide family of ambassadors, supporters, and volunteers are working together to add color to people's thoughts, to inspire them to build healthier habits and bring some positivity to their lives. For the first time since 2020, GWD will be celebrated with live events from Turkey to Thailand in 2022.  But, also, don't forget to check out Global Wellness Day's https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC-qFFQWUjcCJ5qxGw2tgKeg (You Tube Channel) and https://www.facebook.com/globalwellnessday (Facebook Page) to watch this year's three-hour GWD Live Stream featuring presentations by wellness luminaries from around the planet.  However you celebrate wellness, whether at home or through one of the Global Wellness Day partners, it's important to consider how you can incorporate wellness into your day. When people ask him what he does for fun, he says: “I read medicine.” He was also the co-chair of the 2021 Global Wellness Summit in Boston, where a number of expert doctors and academics discussed the intersection of healthcare and self-care. He used to claim that 60 is the new 40, but his latest talk, “90 is the new 40,” sent ripples through the summit attendees. We're going to explore what insights brought him to make this outrageous-seeming claim about the near future. Dr Roizen's passion for medicine started at a young age and he remembers the moment vividly. At nine years old he was terribly sick, so his family took him to the doctor. One shot and six hours later he felt great, and he knew that he wanted to be the person who made other people feel better as well. A realistic roadmap for The Global Wellness Institute's “Wellness Moonshot” goal of eliminating preventable disease,  Dr. Roizen has identified six areas – which he calls the  “six normals” – that  if you get them to a healthy level you can reduce your risk of chronic disease by 80-90%. These areas are normal blood pressure, good cholesterol, good blood sugar, obesity, not smoking, and stress management.  He adds that – if you simply see a primary care practitioner and keep your immunizations up to date – you reduce your risk for chronic disease even more!  ' He's also on the leading edge of the areas of research that are going to make all of the difference, including stem cells, autophagy, epigenetic reboot, hormone replacement, reduced tissue regeneration As crazy as this might sound at first, it's not only possible, it is probable. The research shows us how to do it—now it's just a matter of getting the resources and information into the hands of as many people as possible, which is what Dr. Michael Roizen is focused on today. We cannot do this alone. It requires all of us to step up and give our best. Educators throughout time have had similar concerns and stress… take comfort in that. You can have all the content knowledge in the world but if you can't transmit it or get other people interested in it, you can't teach.  Sometimes you just need the right person to say the right thing at the right time. You have to help raise and grow people first and then everything else comes. That ignites my passion, to see the spread of good things. Not bad things.  About John: Dr. John Schembari is an Improvement Coach through which he supports teachers and school leaders by performing on site evaluations, identifying data informed trends, reviewing curriculum/assessment materials, creating improvement plans, coaching individuals one-on-one, developing and delivering group trainings to educators, and implementing evidence-based instructional strategies that improve teaching practices and increase student learning. John's areas of specific interest include the facilitation of professional learning communities and educator affinity networks, implementation of project-based learning, and the development of teaching practices that promote student engagement, equity, and inclusion. Prior to his time as a consultant, he served as a middle school teacher, high school social studies teacher, founding high school principal, K-12 district CAO, leadership development facilitator, and as national director of teacher and school leader learning. John also has lived/worked internationally in Japan, Saudi Arabia, and The United Kingdom, and, occasionally, performs on site reviews of American curriculum schools in The United Arab Emirates. Raised in New Jersey, he received his undergraduate degree from the University of Mary Washington (VA), his master's degree in public administration from the University of Pittsburgh (PA), his second master's degree in educational supervision from Montclair State University (NJ), and his doctorate in educational leadership from Seton Hall University (NJ). EFT , Emotional Freedom Technique or tapping has helped her and we talk about that.  She also wrote a book called How to Kiss Goodbye to ANA. Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) have the potential to transform your life and put you on the path to recovery. Dr. Howard Murad is a true wellness trailblazer. One of the first doctors to open a day spa, and the owner of nineteen patents in the field, Dr. Murad popularized the idea that skincare goes further than skin deep. He was one of the first people to identify skin care as health care, and now he champions the best ways to maintain healthy skin for the sake of your entire body.  Howard's story is a  great rags-to-riches tale. The youngest of six born to Iraqi immigrants, he worked his way through college, pharmacy school, and medical school, pushing his way through poverty and out the other side a wellness cultural icon. One of the very first dermatologists to open a day spa, it wasn't until he was 50 years old that he founded Murad, a brand that's still a major player in the largest sector of the $4.5 trillion dollar wellness economy – Beauty and Personal Care Products.  Dr. Howard Murad is a fan of the GWS, having attended a number of Summits around the world. Of course, his innovative company would be one of the of the first to sponsor this podcast – the “spots” were actually conversations with beauty and wellness influencers talking about their personal experience with Murad.  Murad skincare even asked our host, Kim Marshall, to guest host their new podcast, “Well Connected!” three times in 2021!  His insights into keeping skin healthy are so helpful, from how we should eat our water instead of just drinking it, to the basics of getting enough sleep and most importantly, keeping positive!  And, of course, there's more to Dr. Murad than his work with skin, He is an accomplished author and artist and a crafter of joyful axioms or affirmations that are published as “Dr's Quote Cards.” We also chat about his personal life, his newfound love of art and even his signature bright colors that pop up everywhere from his walls to his shirts.  As it happens, Kim would often run into Dr. Murad on her favorite hiking trail in the Santa Monica mountains. She says being able to sit down and talk shop with such an influential figure in the world of wellness was both meaningful and fun. When COVID-19 was declared a pandemic, a lot of people looked to the Global Wellness Summit for hope and answers. So the GWS shifted their plans for this year, just like everyone else, and focused on providing information and advice to help people adjust to their “new normal.” One of the GWS initiatives was the #FiveInTen Leader Livecasts, hosted by Kim Marshall. We’ve been talking to wellness leaders from the worlds of fitness, beauty, the arts, technology — you name it — but there’s one thing that every guest has had in common: they’re inspiring examples of innovation and positivity during this time. Today, we want to share two of the conversations featured on livecasts. First is Jim Chenevey, CEO of Earthlite, a company dedicated to healing humanity through touch, and Living Earth Crafts, and spa equipment manufacturer. We’ll hear how they quickly shifted their manufacturing to meet the shifting demands of both medical providers, including how a doctor’s request helped them adapt a pregnancy pillow for massage tables into a life-saving tool for COVID-19 patients. For the second half of this episode, we’ll hear a conversation with Rick Stollmeyer, Co-Founder of Mindbody, a tech platform and app that enables wellness entrepreneurs worldwide to use the software to run, market, and grow their businesses. Then the rest of us can use the app to quickly find fitness, wellness, and beauty businesses in their communities or wherever they’re traveling. They led the way in helping the $100B fitness industry go virtual practically overnight, and it’s amazing to hear how they pulled it off. Back in January, some of the most forward-thinking minds in the wellness industry got together for the release of the Global Wellness Trends Report: The Future of Wellness 2020 (https://www.globalwellnesssummit.com/2020-global-wellness-trends/). We had the opportunity to record some incredible conversations, and we started sharing those conversations in March 2020. Then the state of the world changed, so we pivoted: the Global Wellness Summit started focusing on helping the wellness industry get through the health crisis and, with help from our host Kim Marshall, supporting our community’s needs in the moment through Instagram live streams. But we still had seven conversations with some of the top thought leaders in the wellness space, and we really wanted to share their insight with the world. So we called them up to learn what’s changed in a post-COVID world, allowing us to share twice as much wellness wisdom in each episode. We’re starting with Sarah Smith, Content Director for Prevention, a magazine that’s celebrating its 70th anniversary in 2020 and is more relevant now than ever. In a world in the throes of a global health crisis and where the words “fake news” are floated around a bit too much, Prevention works hard to be a source for trustworthy health info. They’ve been doing incredible work covering COVID-19 over the last few months, with quality and reliability at the forefront. Prevention was also the first organization to partner with the Global Wellness Institute (https://www.prevention.com/life/a30214813/wellness-moonshot-january/) on the Wellness Moonshot: a world free of preventable disease. This goal is also more relevant now than ever, and we really appreciate everything Prevention does to support GWI and further this goal.  If you want to join Kim and Sarah in being part of the Wellness Moonshot, learn about how you can get involved here. Over a 30 year period, Kim Marshall served as a teacher, policy advisor, speechwriter, director of the curriculum, and a principal for Boston schools. After that incredible career, Marshall began chapter two of his professional life with the publication of the Marshall Memo. Marshall's weekly publication is widely known in education circles and for the past 17 years, the "Marshall’s Memo" has been emailed out weekly to educators around the world. In Episode 127 of Class Dismissed, Marshall talks about which ideas in education have had decades of lasting power and Marshall told us that he thinks teacher teams may be the "secret sauce" to successful schools. Marshall says that when schools create groups like the algebra team, the 4th-grade team, or the kindergarten team they get results. Marshall says these teams should be sitting down planning curriculum units together and then looking at the actual student work that comes out of their classrooms on a day-by-day basis or from assessments and sharing the most effective ideas. Marshall says this needs to happen because teaching is contextual. "Any middle school teacher will tell you they can have a lesson that's going really brilliantly the first lesson and then the same lesson in the second lesson doesn't go as well," Marshall says this is because teaching is so hard and so complex. Marshall just released a new book encapsulating the "Best of the Marshall Memo" and he and his co-author, Jenn David-Lang, are offering a free chapter on time management to anyone that emails them to requests it. Kim Marshall spent decades monitoring education in the United States, so we asked him how we're doing. For 50 years, Kim Marshall has been deeply involved in education in the United States. Between 1969 and 2002, Marshall served as a teacher, policy advisor, speechwriter, director of curriculum, and a principal for Boston schools. Once retiring from public education in 2002, Marshall started serving as a coach for principals, and he started writing the Marshall Memo. A weekly publication, well known in education circles, which he designed to keep educators in the know about current education research and best practices.  "When I was a principal I did not have enough time to read," said Marshall. "Once I got finished being a principal, out of exhaustion by the way. I decided that I now had time to read and that I should write summaries of the very best ideas from a wide variety of publications and send it to principals so they could get some of the best ideas from all around the world." Kim Marshall reading. Credit: marshallmemo.com The State of Education? Over the past 15+ years, Marshall has published over 700 memos and he's had his fingers on the pulse of the education community. So who better to ask about the state of education in the United States. Overall, Marshall is upbeat about where we are. He notes that surveys find that people are happy with their local schools, but they're down on schools nationally. "Generally the US is doing really well, but there are pockets of problems," said Marshall. "They are mostly schools where you're educating children coming from poverty. Children with other issues in their lives. But Marshall says there are some "beat the odds schools" that fascinate him. He says he was inspired to become a principal when he started reading the research on how some schools and principals produced really great schools for students that were challenged. When were we at our best? Since Marshall has been involved in education from 1969 to 2019, we challenged him to state when education in the US was at its best. "I think now we've done better and I think part of that was through some things that were controversial," said Marshall. He says the George W. Bush reforms had its flaws with testing and narrowing the curriculum. "But I think one of the best things that came out of it was producing data broken down by race, by class, by different schools." Marshall says No Child Left Behind, allowed educators to shine a spotlight on those pockets of schools that are not performing well. "The big picture is we're getting better", said Marshall. On this week’s episode of the Healthy Wealthy and Smart Podcast, Kim Marshall joins me to talk about oncology rehabilitation. Kim is a Doctor of Physical Therapy who recently directed her continuing education towards rehabilitation of the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment. In addition to becoming certified in the treatment of lymphedema, Kim completed the STAR training to address and treat other side effects of cancer including unspecified pain, neuropathy and fatigue. In this episode, we discuss: -The history of oncology rehabilitation and the role of physical therapists as a healthcare professional ally -What is lymphedema and how can physical therapists learn to treat this condition -Common side effects of cancer treatment and the influence on a rehabilitation program -Important components of patient education and an exercise program for oncology patients -And so much more!   Direct access oncology patients may not always be aware of the need for specialized care. Kim believes, “We need to be a little bit more available to patients to make sure if we can't treat them then we're getting them in the right direction.”   Patient education is critical during the initial phases of cancer treatment. Potential side effects are best screened early on so they can be more easily managed throughout the treatment. Kim states it is important for patients to understand, “Unfortunately if you've undergone the treatment for cancer, you're going to have a new normal.”   Physical therapists are well prepared to be a primary healthcare provider throughout the cancer treatment process, from preparing patients for treatments to supporting patients during treatment and recovery. Kim stresses, “I would be an advocate for finding somebody who you can go over your laundry list, we should be the healthcare providers that patients can come and complain to along with their concerns and fears.”   Kim encourages those interested in oncology rehabilitation to think about the added challenges of this field but also the potential for personal growth from treating this patient population. She shares, “It is really rewarding. There is something about the diagnosis of cancer and facing your own mortality. I always tell my patients I'm on the good end of this in terms of putting people back together. It's challenging… Every patient is a little different in terms of symptoms and a little bit different in terms of where they are in their recovery.”   For more information on Kim: Kim received her doctorate of physical therapy from Western University and her physical therapy degree from California State University, Long Beach in 1985. She obtained her Masters degree in Biokinesiology from the University of Southern California in 1996. She has specialized in the treatment of orthopedic injuries for the past 20 years. Recently, Kim has directed her continuing education towards rehabilitation of the side effects of cancer and cancer treatment. Kim developed this interest after her grandmother was diagnosed with breast cancer and, as a result of the surgery and subsequent treatment, her grandmother lost her shoulder mobility and developed lymphedema. In addition to becoming certified in the treatment of lymphedema, Kim completed the STAR training to address and treat other side effects of cancer including unspecified pain, neuropathy and fatigue.
