We go rough and tumble this week on Movies Merica with a retro review of the gritty cop drama End Of Watch. Jake Gyllenhaal and Michael Pena star as LAPD cops, Brian and Mike, who patrol one of the worst, if not the worst, crime-ridden parts of L.A. This film shows the seedy world they have to protect and serve the citizens of, all while not getting killed by any number of criminal scum. Gyllenhaal's character, Brian, takes up filming his, and Mike's, exploits in this world with his personal camera so we get a unique take on the cop drama. Also with this distinctive perspective, it shows the brotherly bond between Brian and Mike as they bust each others chops when they're not busting perpetrators. Alongside the rough edges and brutal violence of their job, End Of Watch also presents Brian and Mike's personal lives and who they're trying to protect and stay alive for. End Of Watch doesn't hold back on the darkness of the job while at the same time infusing the movie with humor to help you make it through. Is this movie worth your time? Check out Movies Merica to find out! End Of Watch also stars Natalie Martinez, Anna Kendrick, America Ferrera, Frank Grillo, David Harbour, Cle Sloan, Jaime FitzSimons, Cody Horn, Shondrella Avery, Everton Lawrence, Richard Cabral and Diamonique. A feature film about the 2018 Camp Fire is in production in New Mexico. It stars Matthew McConaughey and America Ferrara and relates the story of a school bus driver's desperate struggle to navigate the fire. Also, a historic fire tower in Plumas County has been the site of an annual artists residency program for nearly eight years. Plumas Arts and the Plumas National Forest are now looking for a 2024 resident, and Highway 70 has finally reopened to one-way traffic controls after months of ongoing rockslides and weather damage left it closed.
Comedian Carlos Mencia is best known for his raw and unfiltered style of comedy, which he has showcased to great success on comedy stages, and in television shows and movies. He has recently gone back to his comedic roots on his No Hate No Fear comedy tour, sharing his newest material with smaller, more intimate audiences. As a comedian who finds the hilarious irony in both the day-to-day and the newsworthy events, Carlos is never lacking in material; he recently shot two stand-up specials due out later this year. Carlos will also reprise his role as Felix Boulevardez in Disney+'s "The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder," the revival of the groundbreaking animated series "The Proud Family." The show is heading into its second season. Mencia comes from a humble background, born in San Pedro Sula, Honduras, the 17th of 18 children. His parents sent him to the United States when he was three months old, where he was raised in the Maravilla Projects in Los Angeles by his aunt and uncle. In his early teens, Mencia moved back to Honduras. When Mencia returned to Los Angeles, he showed such educational prowess that he pursued a career in engineering. But an amateur night at the world-renowned Laugh Factory comedy club would change his path, and a career in comedy began. He became a regular at The Comedy Store, performing nightly. After he found success on the Los Angeles comedy circuit, Mencia was named International Comedy Grand Champion from Buscando Estrellas (the Latin version of Star Search), eventually landing on shows such as "In Living Color," "The Arsenio Hall Show," and "An Evening at the Improv." Mencia continued his journey up the comedy ladder by headlining stand-up tours and starring in stand-up TV specials. In 2002, he received a CableACE Award nomination for Best Stand-Up Comedy Special for his HBO special. Comedy Central soon took notice and the show "Mind of Mencia" went into development. Created by Carlos and comedy producer Robert Morton, the comedy series featured Carlos and his crew with their merciless mix of up-close stand-up, unconventional street interviews, and shocking commercial parodies. The show was an instant hit, and propelled Mencia to the comedy elite. After the first season, Comedy Central signed Mencia back for an original stand-up special, "Carlos Mencia: No Strings Attached," the first Comedy Central Stand-up Special DVD to achieve Platinum sales status. Throughout the four seasons of “Mind of Mencia,” Carlos never stopped performing live, headlining shows across the country and internationally. “Comedy is my art, and fans are my passion,” he has said. Always looking to give back to those fans, Mencia has entertained troops serving overseas for USO tours in Turkey, Kirkuk, Baghdad, Qatar, Afghanistan, and many other countries. Later, Mencia went on to star on the big screen. He starred opposite Ben Stiller and Michelle Monaghan in "The Heartbreak Kid," and in the family-comedy "Our Family Wedding," alongside America Ferrara and Forrest Whitaker.www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn www.BetterHelp.com/TheBarnhttp://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn http://www.betterhelp.com/TheBarnThis episode is sponsored by www.betterhelp.com/TheBarn and presented to you by The Barn Media Group.

Happy Wine Wednesday! Lauren returns to the podcast this week to discuss the Barbie movie. We talk character arcs and our surprise about the film being named Barbie and featuring so much Barbie . . . and Ken. That said, there's no denying that Ryan Gosling was the perfect fit for the role. And Margot Robbie was born to play Barbie. it's WILD to think that anyone other than Robbie was ever considered for the role - looking at you, Amy Schumer. Congrats to America Ferrara and Ryan Gosling for their Oscar nominations! Of course we talk about Ferrara's big speech and whether or not it worked for us. Her delivery of the speech was riveting, but we both wish that Gerwig had trusted her audience a little more with the film's messaging. This movie was such a visual delight, so of course we get into favorite Barbie outfits and favorite set from the film. I also asked Lauren to tell me who her Barbie would be and what she would wear. We also applaud the film's inclusiveness, but would have loved a lot more LGBTQ+ representation. Thanks so much for listening! Friendly reminder - we drink, we know things, we use adult language, and we have a great time. On the seventh episode of All the Film Things, I am joined by my friend, Dina Vo, to discuss the film that took this summer (well... year) by storm: Greta Gerwig's Barbie. This episode is spoiler- filled. Barbie is a comedy/ fantasy film focused on the famous variety of the Barbie (and Ken) dolls. The film was written by two of the best working American filmmakers today: Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach. While the film features a wide range of different Barbies, Kens, and Allan, the story revolves around stereotypical Barbie (Margot Robbie) as she suddenly starts to change and feel an emotion other than routined happiness. The audience, along with stereotypical Ken (Ryan Gosling) join Barbie on her journey to finding who she really is. Barbie, and by extension “Barbenheimer” became a phenomenon. The cast and director went on an extensive press tour with a level of promotion that hasn't happened with a film in a long time. Greta Gerwig became the first sole female director of a film that made over $1 billion at the box office. This is her third directed feature film. The film also stars America Ferrara, Issa Rae, Kate McKinnon, Simu Liu, Will Ferrell, and Michael Cera. This is the first and only ATFT episode Dina has appeared on. We recorded this on August 15, 2023. Dina is not much of a movie- goer. It is rare for her to go to the movies or even watch movies so when she went to see Barbie, I knew we could make an episode around it… especially since I had two more friends waiting for me to see Barbie in order to do certain episodes. Dina enjoyed the film as she dressed up in pink when going to see Barbie in theaters. She even got to take a picture in the now- famous Barbie box! Since this episode was recorded while sitting in a car, the audio quality isn't as great at times. This episode was originally 90 minutes but it had to be cut down mostly due to poor audio. I was able to improve the audio but unfortunately the audio peaks at times and also becomes more muffled. Despite the poor audio quality, I wanted to post this episode because it is certain to be an Oscar contender in March. There will be a few more episodes focused on guaranteed Oscar nominated films leading up to the 2024 Academy Awards. In this episode, Dina and I cover a range of topics about the film. I had prepared notes but I was surprised to learn Dina prepared notes as well! We mostly went through her notes so this episode moves fast with frequent changing topics, Dina and I discussed the “anti- man” criticism surrounding Barbie, the two opposing viewpoints on the Barbie doll, resonant lines and moments, and all things Barbie- land! Later in the episode, Dina takes the same Buzzfeed character quiz that the Barbie cast took (which left Margot Robbie shocked)! Dumb Money - Schnelles Geld | Der neue The Big Short? With a worldwide box office of $1B, there is no denying the massive appeal and success of Barbie, the movie that has become a movement. In this episode, Cecile, Juan, and Shawn breakdown Barbie, give their thoughts on the movie and the inter-generational, cross-cultural, and overall appeal of the iconic Mattel brand. They discuss how Director/Writer Greta Gerwig does a brilliant job introducing some heady societal themes in a hyper-visual, colorful, depiction that is entertaining yet nuanced on many levels.
The Barbie Movie. People either love it or hate it. They're heading to theaters dressed in pink or their fave Barbie dream outfit or standing their ground and saying, "No way, I don't want to see that feminist propaganda." Many people blame retailers, corporations, and industries (beauty, weight loss, etc.) for all of the societal pressures women face, but really, aren't WE to blame? WE, the people of the world? I think so! Most definitely! Tune in to today's episode to hear why I think the Barbie movie gives women someone (or something) to blame for their poor self-image and why I think we are playing victim rather than wanting to rise above it all. After decades of false starts and several months of building hype, we finally have a live action feature film focusing on Barbie, Mattel's long-running line of popular dolls! And it has QUITE the pedigree: it's directed by Greta Gerwig as a follow-up to her last two films (Lady Bird, Little Women) which both received Oscar nominations for Best Picture. Gerwig also co-wrote the screenplay with Noah Baumbach who himself has received multiple Oscar nominations for previous films including Marriage Story. AND it also stars two actors who have received multiple Oscar nominations: Margot Robbie plays our eponymous heroine Barbie while Ryan Gosling plays Ken. The story follows Barbie living an idyllic life suddenly dealing with an existential crisis which turns everything upside down....and we'll leave it at that as things just get increasingly surreal. The stacked cast also includes Kate McKinnon, Issa Rae, America Ferrara, Will Ferrell, and Simi Liu among several others. Let's head to Barbie World! It's tough to get noticed in Hollywood, and today's guest made a career by helping others do just that. She was one of the entertainment industry's most respected and sought-after media and publicity strategists, ran her own talent management firm (B. Company), and now she works with Late Show legend, Stephen Colbert… as president of his production company Spartina. Carrie inspires me and so many other women by being a kind leader in a tough industry, her dedication to her team, and her 1.8 second-response time to text messages. Whether you're just starting out or you've been in business for years, there's something here for you. So grab a cup of tea, buckle up and tune in!In this episode, we discussFinding the confidence to start your own thing in the entertainment industry - TWICE!Handling comparative pressure, facing down obstacles and refusing to apologize for who you are.Balancing high demands on your time while finding time to live a lifeHer genius method to get to inbox zero-ish (I've tried it, it works!)The women that have lifted HER up.This episode at a glance:[08:23] What helped Carrie take off on her own: she wanted to contribute to the choices that her clients were making, not just enhance the work they were already doing. And it just took one client, America Ferrara, to say “I see you as that” to give her the confidence to *be* that.[20:45] The main reason Carrie said YES to running Stephen and Evelyn Colbert's production company, Spartina: If that YES is loud, if something magnetic is pulling you, that's telling.[31:08] Carrie's empowering leadership style: she taps into people's strengths and celebrates the things her team can do that she can't. If you have a team of clones, you won't succeed. [44:05] Carrie was surrounded by strong female role models, starting with her mom, author and speaker Marcia Byalick. She learned from great women in her industry like Kelly Bush Novak, Lesley Dart, Lois Smith, and Pat Kingsley.[58:03] What's on Carrie's Times Square billboard: “There's always a ticket”. Married couple America Ferrara and Ryan Piers Williams star in X/Y premiering at The Tribeca Film Festival. The film bravely depicts sex scenes shot so tastefully you don't even see a butt cheek or a breast. Ryan tells host Robin Milling he had to convince his own mother he wasn't making a o, but rather implying the visuals for a stronger impact. America says her sister came away with the impact of the journey far more than, 'I can't believe I had to watch my sister and her husband make love!' Putting themselves out there on the big screen as a married couple, Ryan wanted to make sure the scenes were shot in a tasteful way that got to the heart of the emotion. America adds, 'Sometimes a hand touching a curve on your back is the most intimate thing you can experience. Of course as an actor I appreciated that Ryan didn't get gratuitous with the sex!' And being directed by your husband making out with Common in a bathroom stall can be a little awkward but professionalism always came first. Ryan says it's intense directing your wife in a sex scene with someone and being in a sex scene yourself but it was his job to make everyone feel comfortable to get the best results. Ryan and America who make their home in New York took advantage of their daily Bikram yoga and Soul Cycle spin class routines for the film as well as using those locations where they work out. Ryan also wants to remind New Yorkers that Far Rockaway is still recovering from Hurricane Sandy, using those beaches for the surfing scenes. They discuss the trajectory of their relationship from dating, engagement to marriage and how that has impacted their work together, telling Robin their mutual respect and championing of each other creatively and pushing each other's boundaries is what makes the balance work.
