How THC-infused beverage brand Cann is capitalizing on Dry January

Making Marketing

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 16, 2025 36:54

With New Year's resolutions in full force, brands are trying to cash in on Dry January. Cannabis-infused beverage brand Cann, in fact, usually sees its sales jump every January due to more people teetotaling. "I just got these numbers earlier today," co-founder and CEO Jake Bullock said on this week's Modern Retail Podcast. "So online -- where we get the data the fastest -- this first week of January is up 75% from where it was this week last year." That's because the six-year-old company is investing in content related to Dry January -- or what the company likes to call Cannuary. But Cann has also been on a big growth streak. The company is now selling its beverages in liquor stores in about 20 states. A year ago, it was only in around three states with this channel. Bullock explained that the reason for this growth is changing legislation and more people testing out THC-infused beverages. He also spoke more broadly about the state of cannabis products in the U.S. Cann, he said, has expanded to states "that we would have never imagined we would be selling -- Cann in North Carolina or Tennessee. And not only are we selling there, it's selling really well, and consumers love these products," he said. Getting more people to try it out is another hurdle. While people who smoke marijuana may be comfortable with trying to drink, others might not be. That's why expanding to liquor stores has been so crucial to Cann's success. "We've always said we sit at this intersection of sober curiosity and cannabis curiosity," Bullock said. "And that curious customer maybe isn't as comfortable going into a dispensary."

The word 'resolution' has several meanings. It can refer to something that has been settled or resolved. It can infer a desire to do something differently or to behave in a changed way - as in a New Year resolution. It can also mark the final unravelling of some great complication or drama. In music, it means something more specific: the progression from discord to consonance. With New Year in mind, Tom Service considers the idea of resolution in music in the widest sense of the word; including a look at how composers set about creating a resolve to their musical ideas. Tom's guest expert is the composer Dobrinka Tabakova.

With New Year's resolutions in the air, most of us are actively thinking about ways to move towards the best version of ourselves. Just like Aristotle describe the inevitability of an acorn becoming an oak tree with the right nutrition, I believe that we are destined to become the best version of ourselves if we surround ourselves with the right people and things to help us to move in that direction. Perhaps we could be less aggressive about resolutions and instead allow ourselves to move in a positive direction with some kindness. One of the best ways to support positive transition is surrounding ourselves with others who are doing the same thing. In this video I'm sharing information about an exciting upcoming women's retreat that I'm offering with some amazing cohosts, May 5-8 at the Miraval Austin Spa and Resort. With New Year's coming around the bend, many of us take this time to evaluate our lives. For some of us, it's an exciting time, for others—our inner critic takes out the baseball bat and beats us up pretty harshly. In this episode, you'll listen in on an OGLE session with someone who is struggling with the belief that they are not fulfilling their potential. In the process of editing this episode, I've listened to this about five times, and I keep getting something new from it. It's vulnerable, intimate, profound, and of course, there are a few moments of accidental comic relief. If you're new to my OGLE method, I've reclaimed the word from its historic bad rap definition: to stare at something in a lecherous manner. I suggest we deeply perceive our circumstances, as in to ogle them through a healing lens, using my 4-step OGLE method: O: Identify the offending behavior. G: Find the good in the offending behavior. L: Determine how you're peering into the looking glass. E: Ask how this will elevate you, or what elevated action you will take. With New Year's quickly approaching, I'm guessing you will be thinking about how you want to spend more of your free time in 2022. Friends, family, and your health are all great choices but I want to dangle one more idea out there: a side project.   A side project is something that you do aside from your primary job but unlike hobbies, they have a sense of effort and thoughtfulness in their approach. Examples could be starting a blog, creating an app, or forming a band. Side projects are a great way to learn new skills, meet people, and develop a purpose outside of your career. Plan with humility, live with gusto James 4 and Ecclesiastes 9 January 3, 2021 I. Introduction: A. 2020 is done and 2021 is here! With New Year’s always come new dreams and plans! 1. I know last year moving into our 75th year as a church we had real big dreams and plans for the next 5 years here at MVC that we were going to unveil around Easter but Covid 19 was like dropping an atomic bomb on those plans. 2. I know for many personally, not only Covid 19 but just everyday life apart from Covid, impacted their personal dreams and plans for last year and they have felt that atomic bomb dropped on those plans! B. Today I want to share the major work that God did in my heart last year that came out of that bomb dropped on my life! C. God had been preparing me all year for this lesson through personal and ministry plans blown out of the water by Covid creating a constant flux with plans and long term rhythms of life and ministry. Add to that the loss of two very close friends who died earlier in the year then it started to come to a head for me on Tuesday afternoon November 10th 1. It was just four hours before the biggest board meeting of the year because we were going to unveil the new dreams and plans for the MVC and the leadership over the next number of years because the other plans were blown out of the water by Covid 2. I just got off the phone and I had a mini-stroke a) I could not even make that meeting b) Within eighteen hours I was laying in the hospital scheduled for all kinds of test as they were concerned I may be on the way to a major stroke. 3. As you might imagine my plans for that day were totally different than what was in my schedule book and heart! a) On top of that, not knowing what was going to happen to me, many of my future dreams, hopes and plans with my wife, children and church all now became very uncertain to me. 4. By God’s grace I was released on Thursday with an all clear but keep an eye on your physical health and stress levels! 5. But that Saturday morning I found out that both Jeff Schmidt and Jim Higgins, both friends of mine, had died the night before. a) Something broke within me – the jabs throughout the year, the punch that staggered me with a ministroke just 4 days before and the knockout punch came when I read that email. • Something happened in my heart at that moment and God led me instantly to the passage I want to share with you this morning as we move into 2021 with our new dreams and plans. turn to … II. James 4 A. Listen to what God spoke to me through His Word that morning. Read 4:13-16 B. V13 are the big plans we have – the church had them, you had them and I had them and we have new ones as we move into 2021. Plans both for today and for the future – read v13 C. But what I did not know that Tuesday morning when I woke up all excited have MVC plans shared that night with the leadership, and what you do not know is what v14 says. Read D. Then in v15 is the wisdom and the attitude that we all need to carry both in our dreams hopes and plans both for today and the future. Read v15 1. First, if God wills – you will be alive this afternoon or tomorrow a) That Tuesday afternoon with a major stroke possibly looming as I laid in bed in the hospital I did not even know if I would be alive tomorrow! 2. Secondly, if God wills – you will do what you are planning. a) So many things can enter into our lives that are beyond our control that makes our plans uncertain both later today, tomorrow and in the future. b) Listen to Proverbs 16:9 NASB & NLT. E. The lesson of this passage for us is this – the great trump card on our life and plans is God’s will! 1. So I need to plan with humility recognizing that ultimately my plans are not determined by my will but God’s will • But to balance out Scripture with Scripture and complete the heart shaping God was doing in me we need not only plan with humility but we must … III. Live life with gusto A. Turn to Ecclesiastes 9 is a wisdom book where the second half of the book is dominated by the reality that we are going to die! But he does not present that as a morbid thing but as a reality to know so we can live wisely in light of it. B. At the start of the chapter he says two very important things that sounds a lot like James 4 1. V1 the future is unknown and uncertain whether our life will have adversity or prosperity 2. Then in v2-6 he talks about the certainty of death for everyone with the loss of participation in this life. 3. And by the way this is not just a message for old people – listen to v12 C. Now listen to the advice he gives us in light of these facts! Advice that I would never expect from the wisest man who ever lived outside of Jesus. 1. Read v7 – bottom line he is saying here enjoy the simple everyday things God has given us! 2. Read v8 – clean clothes and oils were used in that culture on festive occasions. Thus he is saying celebrate every day you have to live. Brothers and sisters every day we are alive including today is a special gift from God! 3. Read v9 – enjoy life with your mate – this is one of the great gifts that God has given to us in life. Do not waste it because you do not know how long you will have this gift! 4. Read v10 – whatever you do, that goes all the way from work to play and everything in between them, do it with all your heart and strength! Because once you die, at least here on earth that opportunity will be gone! D. So guess what is happening to Pat Peglow in these days. I am planning more humbly and seeking to live with more gusto as I am examining my life, my plans, my schedule, my habits, the care of my physical body and management of stress with a special emphasis on the things Solomon says here as I am seeking to enjoy life more, live it more passionately with a special emphasis of doing those with the greatest gift has given me outside of Jesus – Kimberly Jean – some of you know as “baby girl” • So plan humbly, live with gusto! What do we … IV. Do with all this (communion) A. As you start 2021 with Jesus in communion I want to encourage you to consider three things 1. In light of James 4 - ? what does the way you talk about your plans and the way you respond to events and people that interrupt your plans reveal about your heart and your attitude about your plans verses God’s will for your life? 2. In light of Ecclesiastes 9 – a) How are your joy levels? As believers we should be the most joy filled people in the world! If we are not something is out of alignment with our relationship with the Lord as He is the one who fills our heart with his joy! b) Finally, how well do your plans line up with the wisdom we learn in Ecclesiastes about how to live life in light of the uncertainties of life and the certainty of death? B. If you do not know Jesus the most important take away from this message is that you have no guarantee that you will be alive tomorrow or even this afternoon. 1. Scripture says today is the day of salvation, do not put it off! 2. If you do not know Jesus turn to Him this morning and acknowledge that you are separated from him because of your sin and that you are transferring your trust right now to what Jesus did on the cross to you to pay for your sins and the new life He offers you through His resurrection! 3. If you are here today or following on line I would be honored if you would contact me personally through the church and I will be glad to speak to you about how to come to know Jesus personally! C. Pass and pray

With New Year’s fast approaching, we are all in store for our usual turning-of-the clock epiphany. Suddenly, everything changes and, at that moment, we just know. Except not. Epiphanies are cliches that keep us from doing the hard work of understanding how persuasion happens. The epiphany collapses the event that happens with our response to it as opposed to the rhetorical figure peripeteia, which marks an event as an opportunity for change. Joe Biden used both epiphany and peripeteia in his 2020 address at the Democratic National Convention. This episode will explore how these rhetorical strategies allowed Biden to navigate his thorny history with Civil Rights advocacy and what worked and didn’t work in Biden’s speech. He now serves on the board of directors of several national nonprofit organizations who co-founded the Veteran Success Resource Group in 2015, a military nonprofit that provides full spectrum resources for veterans and their families. He is also a senior advisor at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation, where he leads a team focused on employment opportunities for wounded veterans and their caregivers. Favorite Success Quote “This is a wonderful day, I have never seen this one before” ~Maya Angelou Key Points 1. We All Face Our Own Adversity  I want you to imagine for a second that your whole world is crumbling down. You wake up bleary eyed from a fitful night of sleep and check your phone to only to be met with two voice messages informing you that you have one week to pay your mortgage before your home will be foreclosed and the bonus you were expecting has been cut in half due to a recent drop in your company's stock. Furthermore, as you rest your head in your hands wondering what you are going to do, your wife, whom you are on the verge of divorcing, enters the room and begins to argue with you about trivialities you don't understand until you are so frustrated that you storm out of the house, slamming the door behind you. You decide to skip work for the day and instead drive yourself to a local bar where you intend to drown your worries in whiskey because you just can't deal with the stress anymore. Walking through the doors of the dimly lit bar, you notice that there is another man sitting in the bar by himself, looking sullenly into his drink as he fights back tears. With hopes of finding a companion to share in your misery, you sit down next to him and begin a conversation only to find out that the man had recently suffered a layoff at work after losing his wife of 15 years to cancer. Startled by his situation and own perceived weakness, you silently curse yourself for your self-pity and decide to keep your own worries to yourself and order another round. You see, no matter what adversity you are facing, someone else always has it worse and it's easy to trivialize our own struggles whenever we compare them to the things that others are facing. But the problem with this mentality is that we fail to realize that comparing away our strugles will not make them dissapear. Just because you aren't facing disease, death, or bankruptcy does not mean that your pain is not real and that it does not need to be addressed. Whatever struggle you are facing, there is only one way to eliminate it. And that is to admit that you are in pain and seek the help that you need to overcome it. 2. You Can Achieve Anything With Time  The media loves to propagate this myth of the “overnight success.” They love reporting on stories about the 17 year old entrepreneur who achieved IPO and retired before graduating high school with $20 million dollars in the bank. Or the actress who landed one movie role and suddenly became the face of Hollywood. Or even the “Biggest Loser” who dropped 150 lbs. of fat and became a model of health and athleticism. But the thing is, none of these people's success happened overnight. It happened after years and years of working behind the scenes, after countless sleepless nights toiling away at their craft, and after thousands upon thousands of disciplined mornings brought them the results that they wanted. You need to remember that no goal you have is out of your reach, it will just take time and it will take sacrifice. It will require that you give up on the “good” so that you can step into the “great.” It will mean that you miss out on parties and dates and time with friends while you work to build your legacy and achieve your dreams. Nothing is out of your reach, but you must be patient and you must be diligent if you want to achieve it. 3. It's Ok to Ask for Help Do you remember when you first learned to ride a bike? Do you remember the feeling of the wind in your hair, the rub of the helmet strap against your chin, the exhilaration in your stomach as you accelerated down the street… And the sudden halt whenever you suddenly hit an unexpected bump and flew over the handlebars crashing into the ground with a definitive thud. As you sat on the street, blood oozing from the raspberries on your knees and elbows, you began to cry and if your father was present, he likely responded to your accident with four words “Man up! You're ok!” As an adult, your father knew that you would be fine, but as a young boy, you felt that your world was caving in around you and the only response that you receive was to suck it up and be a man. While instances like this may seem relatively benign in the big scheme of things, this mantra of “Man up! You're fine!” is repeated over and over to the men of our society like a record on repeat until we reach a point where, no matter our struggle, we simply bear it and grin, refusing to ask for help because we fear that we will appear weak or vulnerable. The simple truth, however, is that we all need help. We all have our inner demons, we all have our struggles, we all have those dark places we don't let anyone see that eat us alive at night. And the only way to overcome them is to be willing to reach out to others and ask for help You need the support of others, you especially need a group of men in your life who can be with you through the hard times and help keep you on the right path. You are not alone, and you don't need to be. Whether you need to join a men's mastermind, hire a coach to talk to, or simply call up an old friend, if you are in pain then get help. Talk to someone and be real about the struggles in your life, I promise it will be one of the best decisions that you ever make. 4. Forget What You “Should” Be Doing With the holiday season in full swing, most of you who are going to visit family are going to hear one word more than any other, “Should.” You should get a job and quit trying to build your silly business. You should find a girlfriend and stop partying. You should quit spending so much time on silly pursuits like travel and art and just get married and get a job instead. You should do this. You should do that. But the truth is, there is no guidebook for what you should be doing as a man. No one in society can tell you what is right for you, whether it is entrepreneurship or the 9-5, marriage or the bachelor life, travel or settling down. Life is a beautiful buffet with countless options and most men feel weighed down with the expectations that society sets that we are supposed to earn a certain amount of money, marry a certain type of person, or live a certain type of life. 5. Define Your Own Version of Success       With New Year's right around the corner, everyone is going to be setting new goals and resolutions for 2017. And I can tell you without ever meeting the person or knowing a darn thing about them who is most likely to succeed based purely upon what they write down. You see, most people want to achieve success but they never truly define what success means. They set vague and ambiguous goals that are uncompelling and uninspiring. Everyone says that they want to lose weight, make more money, have a more abundant dating life, and achieve more, but what does that really mean? How much weight do you want to lose? How much money do you want to make? Who do you want to be dating and how frequently? You see, the only way to truly achieve “success” is to have a clear picture of what success means to you. For some people, success is an easy going 9-5, $10,000 in the bank and a happy family. Other people would become depressed if they are making less than $10,000,000 a year and travelling 11 months out of the year. If you want to achieve success, you need to define what it means to you first, and then set out to achieve it second.

With New Year’s Eve comes the ball drop in Times Square at the stroke of midnight. But in the late 1800s, Boston dropped a ball every day to mark the stroke of noon, because telling the time was serious business. The time ball, along with telegraphic signals and fire alarm bells, announced the exact time to the public, at a time when the exact time was critical to navigation on the high seas and safety on the newfangled railroads. With ultra-precise clocks made by local jewelers and true astronomical time announced daily by the Harvard Observatory, Boston Standard Time became the de facto standard for a wide swath of the country long before time zones were officially proposed and adopted. Solid Rock Church Sermons

As we kicked off the SR Vision sermon series this past Sunday, we began by looking at what worship truly is and what it has to do with God’s work in transforming our lives. With New Year’s Resolutions fresh on our minds, most of us have been evaluating the changes we want to see in our lives in 2018. As we seek positive change, we need to remember that true change doesn’t come from behaving differently; it comes from beholding the glory of God. WE can’t change US. We are only changed by beholding something better, something more beautiful, something more powerful. If you truly want to behave differently, you need to be wiling to behold differently: to think deeply about the holiness of God, to behold the majesty of His beauty, and to be overwhelmed and overcome with His goodness in your life. What are the areas of your life that you truly want to see changed in 2018? In what ways can you position your life to be a reflection of God’s glory to the world around you?

With New Year's Resolutions in full swing, I know a lot of us, myself included, can often feel like we're not going to make it happen. We're simply not strong enough to keep up with the willpower necessary to make that big change. We feel stuck... even nine days into the new year. Sometimes it just takes a few quick things to turn it around for me - the same can be true for you. More often than not, you just need a little perspective reminder of where you are, and how much you've actually done. More importantly, it is an opportunity to be authentic, and notice all the roles you play, the things you do, and who you are in your life. Gentlemen, this is paramount for you because you often take on more than your fair share (you're the hero, right) and you discount your actions. Whenever you feel like all your efforts are not making enough change happen, or not happen fast enough, take a few moments to pause. That pause will help you get it together before you decide to throw in the towel. In today's episode, I'll walk you through five secrets to restoring your momentum when you're stuck. Hopefully they help you get back in gear and back on track. It's never too late to get focused and few things are actually lost causes.

With New Year’s celebrations behind us, it’s time to look toward what the financial world has in store for us in 2017. Unfortunately, retirement and estate plans may be taking a huge tax hit from the IRS this year. As Jim mentioned in Part I, the “stretch IRA” has been an invaluable tax-management tool for investors and estate planners for decades. Today’s rules allow beneficiaries of inherited IRAs to limit distributions to the minimum, which maintains money in the tax-deferred environment and allows for compound tax-deferred growth - potentially a very lucrative strategy. But in September of 2016, the Senate Finance Committee unanimously voted to kill the stretch IRA. It is very likely that this change will become law this year - and that the new law will require those who inherit an IRA to pay taxes on all but $450,000 of the money within five years. While the strategies in Jim’s new book, The Ultimate Retirement and Estate Plan for Your Million-Dollar IRA (available for free at www.paytaxeslater.com) can help you reduce the impact of this potentially devastating law, it will still be major blow to any family who has more than $450,000 in their IRA or retirement plan. In this episode of The Lange Money Hour, Jim will talk about the impact of the “death of the stretch,” focusing specifically on little-known - but perfectly legal - strategies to prepare for its passage, including: TOPICS COVERED: 1. Roth IRA conversions 2. Maximizing Social Security 3. Flexible estate planning 4. The value of a Charitable Remainder Unitrust (CRUT) as the beneficiary of an IRA 5. I want to focus this last episode of 2016 on reflection and setting yourself up for the new year rather than JUST setting resolutions. With New Year's resolutions, we often times set goals that may be difficult to meet or we lose sight of these goals relatively quickly after setting them. Resolutions alone do not set ourselves up for long term growth. I believe resolutions are more so like bandaids to cover something that should be corrected or improved for long term success. Most of the time, resolutions are created out of desperation and short term success. More simply, they don't work. Or last. In this podcast episode, I dig deep into this process and how you can create new goals, habits, and lifestyle changes that last rather than dissipate because your mindset isn't necessarily determined. What you allow will always continue. Good and bad. Now go out and dig deep! ~Charlotte xo

About a decade ago, I was visiting a particularly beautiful part of Kentucky to help a community grow its farmers market. Dinner involved farm-fresh items on a comfortably rustic ranch, and thoughtful dinner discussion was led by original and influential author Wendell Berry. The thrust of his talk was the future. With New Year’s Eve approaching, I’ve been thinking about Berry’s comments. He described how he keeps hearing that future will be about technology or information or some other shiny concept. He argued that this was rubbish. The future, instead, will be shaped by the very things that shape all eras: stable access to food, shelter and happiness beneath the roofs of those shelters. I think he’s right. For me, I find happiness at farmers markets, right next to the food. Happy New Year!
