The Vuelta is over and the world champs is well underway, which means we're nearly at the end of the 2025 racing season! It's really crept up on me, I can't believe it! On one hand, it feels like it's flown by, but on the other - the Spring Classics feel like forever ago. This month's communique focuses on the World Champs over in Rwanda. It is an absolutely brutal course this year; almost 270kms with over 5000m of climbing. Whoever wins this is going to be a thoroughly deserving winner. Remco's already got himself a rainbow jersey in the TT; can he double up with another road race title? What about Pog? He looked pretty knackered in the TT at the world champs, didn't he? Still cooked from the Tour or just reaching the end of his rope? I can't quite believe I'm saying this, but there's a big question mark over him ahead of the road race! But just watch him make me look like a cock knob and win by 9 minutes solo now. There's some strong looking underdogs in the mix too; Del Toro, Healy, Carapaz, McNulty, Pidcock, and loads of other in form hitters that could spring a surprise and overcome the two main favourites. We discuss all the favourites as well as make our predictions. In this month's PeloChat, Turbo Durbo gives us some insight into the end of a pros season - limping or striving through the last few races. Usually, a rider gets their provisional calendar at the start of the year, and it runs through to the Vuelta. After that, it's a case of “we'll see”. There's still races to go, but so many riders are sick, injured, or just cooked - so pulling together a decent squad to knock out the last few races of the year becomes a tricky task. Riders have to be adaptable throughout the whole season. Southam's talking tactics dives into UAE's record breaking season - the most wins in 1 season by any team ever. How have they managed this? How does the team manage so many world class riders? How have they won so much but still lost the Giro on the last day, and seemingly piss the Vuelta away by hunting stages? Tom shares his take on UAE's questionable tactics at points throughout the year that still haven't stopped them winning almost everything. The quiz this month is all about the world's TT. I'm quiz master, and the boys go head to head. Brace yourselves, I'm thinking next month's season finale is going to be a bumper CommuniQuiz edition. Guys, I hope you like listening to this month's communique as much as I love recording it. Sitting down and spinning a yarn about bike racing with some mates - does it get any better? Cheers Mitch The Race Communiqué is brought to you by TrainingPeaks! Track, plan, and train smarter - just like the pros. Get 20% off TrainingPeaks Premium now at trainingpeaks.com/litp I'll be heading to Adelaide this January for the Santos Tour Down Under - chasing the racing, riding the bunches in the morning, and soaking up all the summer vibes the city has to offer. Hope to see you there.
Jason and Kevin review the second half of the World Athletics Championships and discuss Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone's legacy after a stunning 400m performance.
Today on the GMM podcast, we have Jack Alexy, a sprint star shouldering the hopes of Team USA fans in the run-up to LA2028. If you followed Paris, you know the story: Alexy's first Olympic Games were mixed. He led the world out of prelims in the 100 free, then faded to seventh in the final. It was a tough pill to swallow for a swimmer sitting on that much raw speed. Fast forward to the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, and Alexy delivered one of the great redemption arcs, dropping a blistering 46.81 in the 100 freestyle, an American Record. Perhaps more importantly, when Team USA needed a hammer on the medley relay anchor, he uncorked a 45.95 split, the fastest anchor in American history. That bodes well for LA2028. Today, we dig into how he processed Paris, his training over the past year, his sickness on the cusp of Worlds, and what it felt like to deliver swims that rewrote the record books. This conversation runs about an hour. If I missed any topics or questions, drop them in the comments, and we'll pick them up in our next Alexy podcast.
Cole Hocker is your 5000m World Champion thanks to an incredible last lap that took him from 12th to 1st with Isaac Kimeli snagging silver and Jimmy Gressier bronze as Nico Young and Grant Fisher missed the podium. Keely Hodgkinson was upset in the 800 by Kenya's Lilian Odira as the Kenyan women swept all the distance golds in Tokyo. Georgia Hunter Bell for the silver. The US 4x400 team and Rai Benjamin got beat by Botswana in a race for the ages as the Americans got it done in the other relays with Noah Lyles, Sha'Carri Richardson, and Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone on the anchors. Join the conversation on Discourse. Have your say and read what fellow listeners think of the Tokyo 2025 action. A small monthly pledge on Patron gets you that, and so much more, and is a way to show your support for what we do.On the Track todayIn track action today, the middle and long distance titans clashed, as Faith Kipyegon raced Beatrice Chebet over 5000m. A tactically intriguing race with so many potential plays didn't really deliver on its promise, as Chebet once again produced an unrivalled sprint finish after a fairly bland race to claim a World Champs double to go with her Paris titles. The men's 800m produced arguably the best race of the Champs so far, as Kenya's Emmanuel Wanyonyi, led from the front, and dragged 7 others to historically fast times, with three going under 1:42, and all 8 breaking 1:43. We also look at relay qualification carnage, where the USA, Jamaica, South Africa and GB failed to finish or were eliminated in one of either the 4 x 100m or 4 x 400m heats. We also cover the field event medals, and look ahead to the final day. Guys, the Vuelta is over and, well, what a race. My favourite grandy felt a little bit different this year with a huge amount of disruption, tension and uncertainty that meant the racing took a back seat for a lot of people. We saw some unreal rides from Jonas Vingegaard, Tom Pidcock, and utter dominance from UAE Emirates. Holy shit, they were good, chaotic at times, but banked a whole heap of stage wins. The anti-Israel protests that impacted the race so much really shone a light on how fragile and vulnerable bike racing is. There were some hairy moments out there on the road, and – although the bunch made it to Madrid – the riders were robbed of the traditional podium ceremony. But, in this disruption, we saw one of the coolest, old school, grassroots style podiums I've ever seen in Pro Cycling. Our British Boys, Harry & Stu, have put together a banger of an episode for this month's ep of Life In The Peloton's Race Radio. Here's what old mate Stu Downie has to say about this month's Race Radio: With La Vuelta ending in what could be both the best and worst podium we've ever seen, we invited our mate Sean Hardy along to chat – why? Because he was in that very car park to witness the madness of the day unfold. Sean has been Lidl-Trek's photographer for a few years now, earning the trust of the riders – including fan favourite and points jersey winner Mads Pedersen – and making some of the best pictures in racing. We hear about the day, get a severe case of FOMO, and get the lowdown on life in the Lidl-Trek bus. We also consider the history of protest in cycling, talk about racing's place within wider culture, and wonder aloud when the UCI will do something about the more severe cases of sports washing. A nice light chat to start the weekend, no? Guys, I hope you like this episode as much as I do. I can't believe we're coming to the end of the race season, with just the World Champs in Rwanda and Lombardia left to go! Catch up soon, Cheers, Mitch
18-Year-Old Campbell McKean shocked the country when he won national titles in the 50 and 100 breast in early June. McKean went on to compete in both events at the 2025 World Championships in Singapore, making the semi-final in the 100 breast while falling just .12 short of a 2nd swim in the 50 breast. He also swam the prelims of the 400 medley relay, which went on to win a bronze medal.

However, as you probably know, the mountain bike industry isn't in a great place right now and as a result, this series doesn't have any brand support. The World Cup coverage is the most expensive thing I produce, as it often includes travel and I like to pay the guys for the expertise that they bring to the table. So I've been funding it myself, along with the support of our wonderful Patreons. If this show means something to you, and you want to help me keep it going, then please consider supporting us over on Patreon. You can sign up for as little as £3 a month at patreon.com/downtimepodcast. That's less than the price of a coffee, but it makes a real difference. The more of you who chip in, the more likely it is that we can keep doing this. I know times are tight. But if you value what we're creating here, if it helps you stay connected to the sport you love, then now's the time to chip in and help out. World Champs went off on the steeps of Champéry and the riders delivered some wild rides in pursuit of the hallowed stripes. We'll be digging into what went on to bring you the best insight available. As always there's heaps to dive into, so sit back, hit play and listen to this Champéry World Champs post-race show with Neko and Olly. Podcast Stuff Patreon I would love it if you were able to support the podcast via a regular Patreon donation. Donations start from as little as £3 per month. That's less than £1 per episode and less than the price of a take away coffee. Every little counts and these donations will really help me keep the podcast going and hopefully take it to the next level. To help out, head here. This week, James is joined by cycling journalist and author Chris Sidwells, to explore the life and times of Britain's most storied rider, Tom Simpson, on the eve of Simpson's historic World Championships win, 60 years ago, almost to the day.As Simpson's nephew (his mother was Simpson's sister), Chris is uniquely placed to tell us the tale of the miner's son from County Durham who'd become the first Briton to wear the yellow jersey in, winning countless races including three of the five Monuments along the way. As most will know, the end of the Simpson story is a tragic one, but while Chris talks candidly about that day on Mont Ventoux and the situation leading up to it, he's also here to remember Simpson as the trail-blazing, mercurial rider, whose palmarès deserves to be the thing we remember him for most.So sit back and enjoy stories you may have heard before, only uniquely told with hidden insights, plus many more stories you haven't, as we celebrate the extraordinary feats of Mr Tom.From 7th-14th September, Chris and his Cycling Legends friends will be hosting an extended Tom Simpson Cycling Festival in Harworth, Nottinghamshire, which includes sportives, cycling talks and films, the Tom Simpson Museum reopening, and the return of the Retro Weekender, replete with Simpson Retro Ride, Best in Show vintage bike competition and all manner of cycle-centric fun, from grass track racing to the retro bike jumble. In what was a surprise to many, Summer McIntosh, the best female swimmer in the world currently, decided to spend the majority of her 2025 season in Antibes, France. After training with storied coach Fred Vergnoux at a 3-week altitude camp, McIntosh decided to spend the rest of her preparation for Singapore in the south of France with Fred as well. This resulted in the Canadian super star winning 4 gold medals and 1 bronze in Singapore. Vergnoux, known for guiding Mireia Belmonte to Spain's first-ever Olympic gold medal in swimming at the 2016 Rio Games, discusses at length what the first half of 2025 looked like for his teenage pupil. He also shed light on what makes Summer as great as she is and why she's been able to enjoy all of the international success she has had in her relatively short career so far.
