In an episode that will be known as Brendan's "Flu Game," Andy and Brendan recap a meaningful week of fall golf that left men's winners in tears following their wins. Andy is excited that he drove through Moore County, North Carolina without receiving a speeding ticket, unlike at the U.S. Open. After a "Nico Echavarria Minute" to start the golf talk, the two discuss Rory McIlroy's win in Abu Dhabi, his sixth DP World Tour season-long title, tying Seve Ballesteros. Rory was deeply emotional following the win, looking back at his year that contained four worldwide wins and now the order of merit victory for the DP World Tour. The ten DP World Tour players that secured PGA Tour cards are also set, with "The Great" Manassero and Rasmus Højgaard headlining the newcomers. Next up is Swag Sports Minute, where Brendan unboxes the latest "Mystery Bx" drop from Swag Golf. Andy is disappointed in the Bears following another loss to the Packers, but sees positives in Caleb Williams's performance. PJ's Jets struggled again, as known golfer Ahmad Gardner could not tackle yet another receiver headed toward the end zone. The golf talk gets back on track with a wrap up of the Butterfield, won by Rafael Campos. Nelly Korda won again at The Annika, leading to a debate on whether Pelican Golf Club should "Nelly-proof" the course ahead of next year. To finish things up, Andy and Brendan touch on the news of President-Elect Donald Trump playing a round with Jay Monahan this weekend before sitting next to Yasir Al-Rumayyan at Saturday night's UFC event.

We're scattered all over the place today. Nick is at home in his daughter's bedroom, Mark is at 3AW in Melbourne, and Dan is in Wollongong. The wonders of technology, but the nature of it is that the pod does sound a touch different.But....Mark has come in all excited, he has a new putter that he bought on eBay, and he is showing it off and tells us the backstory. Leads to a chat about Nick and Marks putting techniques - and Mark reckons you should 'roll' putts, not 'hit' putts. Big news as well, Mark is like a kid in a candy shop ... he is off on Wednesday night to play Tara Iti, his dream course! Nick gives him some tips.Mark tells Nick about seeing what he calls the 'craziest decision from a golfer he has seen in his life' this week. He explains. Nick is in vigorous agreement. It has to do with the Asia-Pacific Amateur Champion Wenyi Deng. Nick explains why he turned down a chance to play Augusta early in his career, and reminds Mark of the one chance he had to play it but skipped it to go to a party. Ouch.Mark thinks that the PIF boss Yasir Al-Rumayyan and Jay Monahan are appearing to break bread, saying that they are getting very cosy at the moment. Is something happening? Are discussions progressing? And if the Grand Prix of golf gets up, how could the Australian leg look? Nick and Mark discuss, and Mark gives his idea to create an Amateur Sandbelt Classic. And just before the turn, we put a question to Nick O'Hern from pod Wolfpack member Nick about his 2005 Dunhill playing partner. Another ripping story from Nick O'Hern. Speaking of Nicks playing partners, he names the Top 5 celebs that he has played with, who he has not told us about before. The Top 5 for the great team at Southern Golf Club. Into feedback, for Flinders Golf Club, plenty of it, and we discover Nick has never seen the Ned Flanders Leftorium episode of The Simpsons. It's a beefy Friday episode, as Brendan is joined by Mr. Tron Carter of No Laying Up to discuss topics from across the world of sports. The show begins with Brendan picking Ball Knower Tron's brain about his various football teams, with the two going back and forth about the state of the Falcons, Jaguars, Commanders, and Boston College, before transitioning into a discussion about the potential for private equity to invest in college football like it has with golf. This then leads the two to the big golf news of the week, Jay Monahan and Yasir Al-Rumayyan's pairing at the Dunhill Links. Brendan and Tron recap Thursday's round for the two, Rory McIlroy's comments about a PGA Tour-PIF deal being wrapped up by year's end, and Matt Fitzpatrick's quotes about his belief that the DP World Tour should not have strategically partnered with the PGA Tour. With plenty of LIV players in the field at the Dunhill, Brendan then presents Patrick Reed's latest musings, a quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson that Reed believes describes himself. From there, it's a whiparound through the rest of the schedule, touching on 71-year-old Reed Hughes' participation in the Sanderson, the Thursday round of the KFT Finals, and Tron's apathy toward the Champs Tour, much to the dismay of Producer PJ. To wrap things up, Brendan and Tron get into some unsubstantiated rumors before answering a few Golf Advice emails, offering help on "golf penance," a round with Ian Poulter, and some parenting issues.

Then they get to the news that PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan and Saudi PIF's Yasir Al-Rumayyan are playing together in the Dunhill this week alongside their pro partners, Billy Boy and Mean Dean. This leads to a lengthy digression on the ability to get a deal done on the golf course, as well as an exploration on some of the many other amateur/celebrity names in the field. Then they get to some minutiae on the Furyk and Friends Champions Tour weekend. The Sanderson marks the return of Cutthroat Corner, as well as a chat on Monday Q's report about the reduction of fields and cards memo that was sent out. They close with a discussion on the KFT Championship at French Lick, who is in, who is out, and where cards are on the line and some argue it is the purest moment in sports. As they try to leave, Brendan pans the notion of a 5-part documentary series on the Ballfrogs.

We open the pod with big and breaking news from Mark on a major roadblock to a successful merger of the LIV and PGA, this has come from an EXTREMELY high and very reliable source within LIV. It shocked Mark when he heard it, and in turn Nick when Mark revealed it on the podcast. In Nick and Mark's view, this makes a merger the two organisations highly unlikely, and it may lead to a ramping up from LIV of poaching PGA players again. We discuss the likely targets. After this big news settles a bit, it has taken all of us aback a little, we discuss the move of LIV Adelaide to the new February date, Mark loves it, Nick does as well, and we discuss the benefits and difficulties, of moving other Australian tournaments to February. Hour 2: We talked more about the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV golf. This seemed to have come out of the blue and many people involved seemed surprised by this, including the golfers. How will the PGA Tour work the LIV golfers back into their tour? A caller said this reminds him of the Godfather, saying ‘it's business'. A caller doesn't think this can happen in another sport like the NBA because of contracts. A caller who visits Saudi Arabia for business said there are tons of American companies there. You can go to McDonald's or the Cheesecake Factory there. He also said the Saudis are the largest investor in Uber and we still take Ubers. Jerry returns for an update and starts with Jay Monahan and Yasir Al Rumayyan on CNBC yesterday. Brandel Chamblee expressed his disapproval on the Golf Channel. The Yankees lost to the White Sox as John Sterling was back in the radio booth. Seby Zavala hit 2 HRs for the Sox. Jacob de Grom needs season ending Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career and he was quite upset talking to reporters. Dolphins Head Coach Mike McDaniel talked about the success of the Miami Heat. In the final segment of the hour, Boar's Head dropped off some sandwiches and we took calls on LIV golf merging with the PGA Tour.

Hour 1: The PGA Tour and LIV Golf are merging. PGA Commissioner Jay Monahan looks like a total hypocrite today. Boomer said LIV Golf was going to be out of business in 2-3 years. Boomer said they are going to need to make whole PGA players that did not go to LIV for the big money, but Gio said there is no way they can make up that money. Gio said nobody will care by next year and we'll all be happy to be watching the best golfers all playing together again. Gio thinks the NBA could be next for a LIV golf situation. Jerry is here for his first update of the day but first we talk about him going bald. Jerry has audio from Jay Monahan talking to Jim Nantz from not long ago talking about families of 9/11 and LIV golf. He looks like a total hypocrite. Boomer thinks he needs to resign. He saved the PGA Tour but he needs to leave. The Mets lost to the Braves in Atlanta even though they were up 4-1 at one point. John Sterling was back in the Yankees broadcast booth. The Yankees lost to the White Sox 3-2. Jacob de Grom will need season ending Tommy John surgery. It will be his second. Bills Safety Damar Hamlin was a full participant in OTAs. In the final segment of the hour, we talked about the reactions in the golf world to the PGA and LIV merger.  Hour 2: We talked more about the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV golf. His competitive juices are back ever since he won the Biggest Loser of Sayville contest. We took calls on the LIV Golf merger with the PGA Tour. The PGA Tour people look like hypocrites, but they are a lot richer now. Jerry returns for an update and has audio from yesterday's news conference with Jay Monahan talking about the merger between the PGA Tour and LIV golf. Unnamed golfers are saying he needs to step down now. The Mets lost down in Atlanta and didn't do much on offense. Aaron Judge was put on the IL with his toe injury. Jacob de Grom needs Tommy John surgery for the second time in his career and he was quite upset talking to reporters. It reminds us of Chris Carlin crying while saying goodbye to the show, ‘Loud Mouths'. The Jets canceled mini-camp next week because they are playing in the Hall of Fame game and he wants the players to have a break. In the final segment of the hour, Spike seemed like he was moping when he came in today. Boomer wonders if Gen Z is phasing out liverwurst. Gio wonders how the baloney business is. We talked about the Oscar Mayer  Hour 4: NY Post columnist Mark Cannizzaro joins us in the studio. He covered the Jets when Boomer was the QB and they had some run ins. The Yankees were no hit through six innings and lost to the White Sox. John Sterling was back in the broadcast booth. In the final segment of the show, it's still very hazy out because of the wildfires in Canada. Gio has a cleaning lady, so is he really an ‘everyday man'? Boomer said Gio should sell his boat and join a golf club instead.

They react to the details of the PGA Tour and LIV merger announcement, which is still light on many of those details. They remark on just how secretive this process was with hardly anyone knowing what was coming, including most of the players and maybe Greg Norman. Saudi money is officially injected into the PGA Tour with a new, for-profit TBD “entity,” that has Yasir Al-Rumayyan as the chairman but without majority-PIF board control. They discuss how Jay Monahan navigated the last few years and the immediate player fury at the news of the deal. And what will the future look like exactly with a possible world tour? The PGA Tour ended its expensive fight with Saudi Arabia's golf venture and now is joining forces with it, making a stunning announcement of a merger that creates a commercial operation with the Public Investment Fund and the European tour. As part of the deal, the sides immediately are dropping all lawsuits involving LIV Golf. From the golf side, still to be determined is how players like Brooks Koepka and Dustin Johnson can rejoin the PGA Tour after defecting last year for signing bonuses reported to be in the $150 million range. From the commercial side, the governor of Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund joins the PGA Tour board of directors and leads the new business venture as chairman, though the PGA Tour will have a majority stake. News of the deal came as a surprise to many watchers of the lawsuits and Saudi Arabia's inroads into US politics, sports and culture. “This is a huge development and obviously upends a world of golf, which has been perhaps more tradition-bound in the past,” said Kristian Ulrichsen, a Middle East fellow at Houston's Baker Institute. Under Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Saudi Arabia's sovereign wealth fund has made a point of seeking investments, like LIV, where it could shake up existing industries, Ulrichsen said. “That's sort of one of their mantras, to try to be disruptive and to take on the status quo,” she said. “And in this case, they seem to have succeeded.” As for PGA Tour players, most were bewildered by the shocking turnaround. It didn't help that a news outlet broke the embargoed announcement before PGA Tour Commissioner Jay Monahan could send a memo to the players. Most learned of the development on social media. “I love finding out about morning news on Twitter,” two-time major champion Collin Morikawa tweeted. Many were not happy. Wesley Bryan tweeted, “I feel betrayed, and will not ... be able to trust anyone within the corporate structure of the PGA Tour for a very long time.” Byeong Hun An added on Twitter: “I'm guessing the liv teams were struggling to get sponsors and pga tour couldn't turn down the money. Win-win for both tours but it's a big lose for who defended the tour for last two years.” The announcement comes a year after LIV Golf began. Monahan was at the Canadian Open that week and said pointedly about any player who joined LIV or was thinking about it: “Have you ever had to apologise for being a member of the PGA Tour?” Now they are partners, giving Saudi Arabia a commercial voice in golf's premier organisation. “They were going down their path, we were going down ours, and after a lot of introspection you realise all this tension in the game is not a good thing,” Monahan said in a phone interview with the Associated Press. “We have a responsibility to our tour and to the game, and we felt like the time was right to have that conversation.” Monahan was headed to Toronto to meet players at the Canadian Open, though most top players are not there. And while this likely will only lead to greater riches in golf, there still was explaining to do on why the tour would merge with a group that tried to take away some of the PGA Tour's best players and was seen as the latest example of “sportswashing”. “I understand the criticism,” Monahan said. “For me, you take the information you have at the time and make decisions in the best interests. Things have changed. This was the right time to have this conversation.” The deal was in the works for the past seven weeks, when Monahan met Yasir Al-Rumayyan, governor of the Public Investment Fund. Players typically approve changes to the schedule and other competition matters. On this one, they were left out. “No one had word of this,” Monahan said. “Our players expect us to operate in the best interests of the tour.” PGA Tour commissioner Jay Monahan. Photo / AP Instead, he cited guidance from corporate members of the PGA Tour board. Still, Monahan has his toughest work ahead of him. He sought loyalty from his players against a league accused of taking part in sportswashing, an attempt by Saudi Arabia to shift focus away from its human rights abuses, such as the 2018 killing of journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Now the very group that posed such a threat is now the PGA Tour's commercial partner. Along the way, PGA Tour players also got rich. The tour raised prize money at elite events to $20m, the same purse for LIV's individual competition. The 2024 schedule has been reshaped for roughly 16 tournaments like that. “In the short term, I expect a lot of questions and criticism,” Monahan said. “In the long run, players who stayed with the PGA Tour will see they benefited in many ways.” The agreement combines the Public Investment Fund's golf-related commercial businesses and rights — including LIV Golf — with those of the PGA and European tours. The new entity has not been named. Al-Rumayyan will join the board of the PGA Tour, which continues to operate its tournaments. The PIF will invest in the commercial venture. “From the very beginning, the whole initiative was how to grow the game of golf,” Al-Rumayyan said. “And I think what was achieved today was exactly that.” Augusta National and the Royal & Ancient welcomed the news because it ends the bitter feud. Augusta National said the deal “represents a positive development in bringing harmony to men's professional golf”. R&A CEO Martin Slumbers said it would help golf “move forward in a collaborative, constructive and innovative fashion”. As for the new role of Greg Norman, Al-Rumayyan said only that Norman is LIV Golf's commissioner and details of his future role would be announced in the coming weeks. Monahan's memo to players indicated a strong Saudi Arabian presence. He said PIF would make a financial investment to become a “premier corporate sponsor” of the PGA Tour, the European tour and other international tours. The PIF initially will be the exclusive investor in the new entity and will have the exclusive right to further invest, including a right of first refusal on any capital that may be invested. Al-Rumayyan has been spotted wearing a “MAGA” hat during LIV events at courses owned by former President Donald Trump. Former US President Donald Trump plays a shot during the pro-am at the Bedminster LIV Golf Invitational in July last year. Photo / Getty Images Trump predicted last July that a merger was inevitable and said anyone not signing with the Saudi league would be losing out. He weighed in Tuesday and called it a “glamorous deal for the wonderful world of golf”. Monahan said the merger came together the past seven weeks, with PGA Tour board member Jimmy Dunne responsible for bringing together Monahan and Al-Rumayyan. Dunne and Ed Herlihy, chairman of the PGA Tour's board, will serve on the board of the commercial venture. Phil Mickelson and Bryson DeChambeau were among 11 players who filed an antitrust lawsuit against the PGA Tour last August. LIV joined as plaintiffs, and the PGA Tour countersued. The concern for PIF was whether its leaders could be deposed, which Saudi Arabia wanted to avoid. Being open to depositions would leave the kingdom's leaders more vulnerable to legal action, including lawsuits demanding they reveal business deals in the United States. A federal judge had ruled the PIF could not claim immunity from the Foreign Service Immunity Act because of its commercial work with LIV Golf in the US. The PIF appealed the ruling to the Ninth US Circuit Court of Appeals, which was likely to extend the lawsuit deep into 2024 if not longer.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Why is India Inc seeing a surge in shareholder activism?

Business Standard Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 4, 2021 4:14

For some time now, experts have held that the phenomenon of shareholder activism is in a nascent stage in India. But there can still be no doubt that cases of shareholder activism are on the rise in the country. Meanwhile, proxy advisory firms continue to raise red flags when they feel that something is amiss. This year itself, there have been a number of instances where shareholders have challenged promoters and management. Let's examine how this rising tide has impacted India Inc. Towards the end of September this year, Pune-based Kinetic Engineering Ltd's shareholders rejected the company's proposal to increase Managing Director Ajinkya A Firodia's remuneration.   Earlier, in September, Ekta Kapoor and Sobha Kapoor, who are part of Balaji Telefilms' promoter group, faced shareholder ire and failed to obtain the necessary votes on resolutions proposing pay increase for them.   In August of 2021, shareholders voted down Siddhartha Lal's reappointment as Eicher Motors Ltd's managing director. It was reported that the shareholders were against a proposal to hike Lal's salary by 10 per cent as it outpaced the revenue and profit growth clocked by the firm last year amid the Covid pandemic. Recently, Eicher Motors again sought shareholders' nod on Siddhartha Lal's remuneration. In the past few months, shareholders have overwhelmingly voted against the remuneration proposals for the chairmen of Balkrishna Industries Ltd, Hero MotoCorp Ltd, and Bajaj Auto Ltd.   Clearly, shareholders are not taking kindly to proposals for upping the remuneration takeaways of top executives under the current circumstances. But, that's not the only angle of attack amid the rising tide of shareholder activism. Consider the Zee case, for instance. On 11th September, Invesco Developing Markets Fund and OFI Global China Fund had asked the Zee Entertainment Enterprises board to convene an EGM to induct six of their nominees. In the same letter, Invesco had also proposed the removal of CEO and MD Punit Goenka and two other directors from the board in the EGM. The two other directors in question were Manish Chokhani and Ashok Kurien. Subsequently, Chokhani and Kurien resigned. Invesco recently took the matter to the NCLT. As a result, on 30th September, the NCLT directed the Zee board to consider Invesco's requisition for an EGM. Even one of the biggest names in India Inc has been a target of shareholder activism. Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the chairman of Saudi oil producer Aramco and the governor of that country's sovereign wealth fund, was appointed an independent director on the board of Reliance Industries on 19th July. The appointment has now come up for shareholder vote and the voting process will end on 19th October. Based on the recommendations of proxy advisory company Glass Lewis, the California State Teachers Retirement System has decided to vote against Al-Rumayyan's appointment. According to the proxy advisory firm, since Al-Rumayyan has a key role in the operations of Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund and Aramco, he does not qualify to be an independent director. PIF has already invested Rs 9,555 crore in Reliance Retail and Rs 11,367 crore in RIL's Jio Platforms. Meanwhile, Aramco and RIL have been in talks for another equity deal that involves 20 per cent of Reliance's oil-to-chemical business. Meanwhile, the Florida State Board of Administration is also against the appointment. Only time will tell how things will play out in some of these evolving cases. However, whatever the end result, one clear fact emerges when you consider all the cases we have spoken about today. Clearly, if India Inc wants to keep itself free from such tussles, it needs to prepare itself for a more transparent future with higher corporate governance standards.

In Focus: Reliance Industries the latest target of shareholder activism?

Yasir Al-Rumayyan, the chairman of Saudi oil producer Aramco and the Governor of that country's sovereign wealth fund, was appointed an independent director on the board of Reliance Industries on July 19 for a period of three years. The appointment has now come up for shareholder vote and the voting process will end on October 19. Based on the recommendations of influential American proxy advisory company Glass Lewis, the California State Teachers Retirement System (CALSTRS) has decided to vote against Al-Rumayyan's appointment.  CalSTRS is the largest educator-only pension fund in the world, and the second-largest pension fund in the US, with about $318.4 billion worth of assets under management.  As of June last year, CALSTRS held 5.3 million fully and partly paid shares of Reliance. This holding is valued at $179 million today. The fund has cited potential conflict of interest, as Reliance plans to sell a 20% stake in its oil-to-chemicals business for $15 billion to Aramco, where Al-Rumayyan is the chairman. The deal was supposed to close by March 2020 but it got delayed. It is in its final stages at present. Given his connection with the Saudi government and the proposed business relationship with Reliance, proxy advisors Glass Lewis said it did not consider Al-Rumayyan as being independent at this time.   In fact, it is not just CALSTRS which is opposed to the appointment. The Florida State Board of Administration, which manages $245 billion, is also against it.  Further, Saudi sovereign wealth fund headed by Al-Rumayyan has already invested $1.3 billion in Reliance Retail Ventures and $1.49 billion in Jio Platforms. Reliance Retail Ventures is a Reliance Industries subsidiary that owns the group's retail businesses, while Jio Platforms is Reliance's digital services unit. In a communication to proxy advisory firms, Reliance strongly defended its move, saying Al-Rumayyan's appointment had no connection with its proposed deal with Aramco. Further, the O2C business was being spun off into a subsidiary which might have nominees from Aramco. Reliance also said its Human Resources Nomination and Remuneration Committee, which had four independent directors in its total strength of five, unanimously recommended his appointment, given his versatile experience. The Mukesh Ambani-led company has so far not addressed the concerns around Al-Rumayyan's connection with the Public Investment Fund, which has investments in Reliance's subsidiaries. Now the question that remains is whether the investors will be satisfied with Reliance's justification, or will they force India's most valuable company to reverse the appointment of Al-Rumayyan. Let's wait and see.

The Indian benchmark indices ended the final session of the June series of futures & options (F&O) over half a per cent higher, with major contribution from information technology (IT) stocks even as heavyweight Reliance Industries tumbled 2.35 per cent after the firm's 44th annual general meeting (AGM). Among noticeable proposals, Chairman Mukesh Ambani said that Yasir Al-Rumayyan, Chairman of Saudi Aramco and Governor of PIF, will join the Board of Reliance Industries as Independent Director. He also announced a Rs 75,000 crore corpus to set up 'Giga' factories to make solar photovoltaic cells, green hydrogen, batteries and fuel cells over the next three years, under the ambit of the company's New Energy business division. As regards RIL's telecom business, Ambani announced plans to launch JioPhone Next, a fully featured smartphone, that is developed in partnership with Google, on September 10, 2021. As most of these announcements were on expected lines, investors booked profit on the counter, pushing the stock lower for the third straight day. As a result, the stock has fallen around 4 per cent during the period and has wiped off nearly Rs 53,000 crore in market capitalisation. Overall, the S&P BSE Sensex rose 393 points, or 0.75 per cent, to close at 52,699, while the broader Nifty50 index ended the session at 15,790, up 103 points, or 0.66 per cent. Infosys was the best performing stock on the Sensex and Nifty as it jumped nearly 4 per cent on the exchanges. Earlier today, the counter hit a record high of Rs 1,568 after the IT major announced that its Rs 9,200 crore buyback via open route will commence on Friday, June 25, 2021. In the past one month, Infosys has outperformed the market by surging 18 per cent, as compared to a 4.5 per cent rise in the S&P BSE Sensex. A sharp run-up in stock price has seen Infosys' market capitalisation cross Rs 6.5 trillion-mark. Coupled with gains in Coforge, TCS, Mphasis, Mindtree and Tech M, the Nifty IT index advanced 2.8 per cent on the NSE, trailed by the Nifty Bank index (up 0.7 per cent). On the downside, the Nifty PSU Bank index declined 1.4 per cent. That said, despite the stellar gains in the benchmark indices, weakness persisted in the broader markets which titled the market breadth towards bears. The S&P BSE MidCap and SmallCap indices slipped 0.51 per cent and 0.22 per cent, respectively dragged by Adani Group stocks, PNB Housing Finance, Central Bank of India, PNB Gilts, and Munjal Showa. After a volatile last week, investors can expect much the same going into the trade this week due to scheduled derivatives expiry of June month contracts. Meanwhile, with no major domestic macroeconomic data lined up this week, investors will closely eye global markets for cues. Besides, the progress of monsoon, Covid-related updates and RIL AGM will also be in focus. Analysts suggest that traders should be cautious and adopt a stock-specific approach as markets get volatile. On the other hand, long term investors can take advantage of this volatility and adopt a 'buy-on-dips' strategy. As Covid cases continue to recede and states re-open, doctors opined to not let the guard down and warned the third wave of the pandemic could be upon the country in the next 6-8 weeks. India's fresh Covid cases have stayed below 1 lakh for the last 14 days while on Sunday, the country reported 58,419 fresh cases, the lowest in 81 days. Going forward, the pace of infections and vaccination will sway the market trajectory. Meanwhile, on the earnings front, over 100 companies are slated to post their March quarter numbers this week, including ONGC, Oil India, NMDC, Ashok Leyland, Info Edge, Sobha and Apollo Hospitals. With the Q4 earnings season coming to a close, the focus will soon turn to next quarter earnings. That said, one of the biggest event for markets of the year -- Reliance Industries' AGM -- is slated for Thursday and will be closely tracked by investors. The AGM could provide details on a possible Budget phone launch by Jio in association with Google, progress on 5G technology and update on a deal with Aramco. Most analysts have maintained bullish bets on RIL ahead of AGM. The action in the primary market will continue as IPO by India Pesticides will open for subscription on Wednesday. The Rs 800 crore IPO is priced in the band of Rs 290-296 per equity share. Furthermore, two IPOs that closed for subscription last Wednesday are slated to make their debut on the bourses this week. Sona BLW Precision Forgings (Sona Comstar) and Shyam Metalics & Energy are expected to list on exchanges on June 24. Lastly, the rupee's trajectory, FPI flow and oil prices can further sway market sentiments. And now, let's take a look at the trade setup for today. As the global market mood soured, investors back home also braced for a sharp correction today. SGX Nifty was ruling 190 points lower at 15,559 around 7.35 am, indicating a gap-down start for the benchmark indices. Globally, stocks dropped as investors mulled the implications of a surprise hawkish shift last week by the U.S. Federal Reserve. Japan's Topix index shed 2.5%, Australia's S&P/ASX 200 Index dropped 1.8%, South Korea's Kospi index fell 0.9% and Hong Kong's Hang Seng Index declined 1.2%. S&P 500 and Nasdaq futures traded 0.3% and 0.1% lower, respectively. A look at the stock-specific triggers that are likely to guide the market today. Oil India, Info Edge, Bharat Dynamics, TCNS Clothing, and VST Tillers Tractors are among 70 companies slated to post their quarterly numbers today. Saudi Aramco chairman and Governor of the Kingdom's wealth fund Public Investment Fund, Yasir Al-Rumayyan, may be inducted on the board of Reliance Industries a precursor to a USD 15 billion deal, reports said. In a rare regulatory move, Sebi has restrained PNB Housing Finance from going ahead with shareholders' voting on the proposed Rs 4,000 crore-deal with Carlyle group and directed the company to carry out the valuation process as per the relevant legal provisions. NTPC posted nearly three-fold jump in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,649.49 crore for March quarter 2020-21 on the back of higher revenues. The consolidated net profit of the company in the year-ago period was Rs 1,629.86 crore. UCO Bank said its board will meet next week to consider raising up to Rs 500 crore as tier-II capital.
