GUELPH POLITICAST #469 – Whatever Happened to "Sunny Ways"? (feat. Mustafa Zuberi)

Guelph Politicast

Play Episode Listen Later May 7, 2025 41:16

The recent federal election was the formal turning of the page from the premiership of Justin Trudeau to the one led by Mark Carney. For long-time political observers, the difference between the two men in both style and substance is stark, but there's no doubt that the change in leadership in March is at least half the reason the Liberals got a near majority last week. And yet, the question remains: What happened to Trudeau-mania? The date was February 7, 2013. The location was the Brass Taps, the pub on the second floor of the University Centre at the University of Guelph. Packing them in that day was Justin Trudeau, then a candidate for federal Liberal leadership. At this point, the Liberals were in the political wilderness, but there was a new kid on the block who had different ideas. The pundits didn't really take Justin Trudeau seriously, but the young people in the Brass Taps that day did. They really, really did. How did the excitement about Justin Trudeau and his “Sunny Ways” sour so completely that his mere removal from the ballot made the party he revived competitive again? Was it the right-wing smear job? Was it the rise of Trumpism and anti-woke sentiment? Was it the lingering social and economic effects of the COVID-19 pandemic? It could be all three and it could be none of it, but it's one of the great questions of this political era, and this episode of the podcast. To answer it, we're joined by Mustafa Zuberi, who was, for a time, the president of the Young Liberals at the U of G and served as the Liberal candidate for Guelph in the recent provincial election. Zuberi was one of the thousands of young people drawn to politics by Trudeau and his idealism, so he will help us understand how he inspired so many young people, why that youthful energy started to move to the right in recent years, and how Trudeau might have been more of a victim of circumstance than ability. So let's talk about the rise and fall of Justin Trudeau on this week's Guelph Politicast! You can follow Mustafa Zuberi on Instagram. You can check out the coverage from Justin Trudeau's stop at the Brass Taps in 2013 on the original Guelph Politico Blogspot. And obviously, we will be keeping up with the latest developments from the new Canadian Prime Minister every Thursday at 5 pm on Open Sources Guelph on CFRU 93.3 fm or cfru.ca The host for the Guelph Politicast is Podbean. This week on Open Sources Guelph, we go mega! On this super-sized edition of the show, the last one before Election Day and the episode that opens three days of advanced polling, we will profile the three candidates we haven't covered yet. From the long-time campaigner running for the governing party, to an upstart trying to rebuild a Liberal stronghold, and a new face for a new party! This Thursday, February 20, at 5 pm, Scotty Hertz and Adam A. Donaldson will discuss: Be Coole. You may not know Robert Coole, but he's been doing politics in Guelph for a long-time as a reliable and seasoned campaigner for local Conservatives, but now, he's in the spotlight as the PC Party candidate in this provincial election. Coole will join us to talk about why Guelph needs a voice in the next PC government, and why he's taking the spotlight after years of playing in politics behind the scenes. Mustafa: The Liberal Candidate. There are a lot of young people running for the Ontario Liberals, and Mustafa Zuberi is one of them. Pretty well established in local politics thanks to his years running the Young Liberals at the University of Guelph, Zuberi now aims to be the next MPP from this riding and part of a Bonnie Crombie government. He will tell us why the Liberals are ready to run Ontario again. If the Blue Fits... Just when it looked like there would be no emerging party candidates running in Guelph this election, we get the arrival of Carina Fraser. The author and single mother is running for New Blue, which, as the name implies, is an alternative to the PCs aiming to collect the ones turned off by Doug Ford and not willing to bank on one of the other major parties. Fraser will tells us why you shouldn't sleep on the New Blue. Open Sources is live on CFRU 93.3 fm and cfru.ca at 5 pm on Thursday.

As Liberals from across the country gather in Ottawa for the party's first in-person national convention since the pandemic, “It's Political” digs into Justin Trudeau's record as party leader and his time as prime minister. With bleak polling numbers and an ambitious Conservative opponent, how can the Liberals correct their course? First, we sit down with Trudeau's former principal secretary Gerald Butts. Then we'll hear from Abacus Data's David Coletto who has some new numbers.  We'll also bring you a conversation with longtime Liberals: Prince Edward Island Senator Percy Downe, former PMO executive director of policy and cabinet affairs Marci Surkes, and MPs Nathaniel Erskine Smith and Kody Blois. Finally, we'll also hear from the outgoing chair of the Young Liberals of Canada Lucas Borchenko about some of the policies younger Liberals — those who pushed the party to adopt marijuana legalization and gay marriage — are championing now. Clips this week were sourced from CPAC, The House of Commons, CBC, CTV, Global, the Guardian, and Pierre Poilievre's Facebook page. “It's Political” is produced by Althia Raj and Michal Stein. Kevin Sexton mixed the program. Our theme music is by Isaac Joel.

Dominic Perrottet claims that he was naïve and didn't really understand the consequences of his actions of wearing a Nazi costume to his 21st birthday party but, to put this in context, Perrottet is 40 years old, which means his 21st was held in 2003 – and at that time, he was a member of the Young Liberals, he was in his third year of university, and any reasonable person with half a brain would realise that wearing a Nazi costume to their 21st birthday party is probably not the wisest thing to do, especially if you've got political aspirations. But this has got nothing to do the costume itself: it's more to do with political payback and who's going to lead the Right faction of the Liberal Party after a likely election loss at the NSW state election in March.George Pell died last week – conservative MPs and mainstream media, especially News Corporation have lauded Pell as a “saint of our times” and running reams of favourable coverage about how he was persecuted for his beliefs when he spent 18 months in a Victoria jail. But George Pell was not a hero at all.He failed to report child sexual abuse in Ballarat, he practiced that long held Catholic tradition of moving offending priests from one parish to another, he wasn't interested in listening to the victims of child sexual abuse, there were a number of allegations of historical child sexual abuse that never made it to court – Pell was found guilty of child sexual abuse in Victoria, before the high court overturned the decision 18 months later – he was also a climate change skeptic, and wanted to reduce the role of women within the Catholic church.George Pell was a seriously flawed character and signified everything that is wrong with the Catholic church in Australia and it would have been better if his supporters acknowledged this.

President of the NSW Young Liberals, Deyi Wu joined Salvatore Babones to discuss whether our younger generations have lost interest in politics, and if there is a bright future for either party. The recent federal election has shown us that independent grassroots campaigns threaten both major parties and could permanently change establishment politics. Issues, such as housing affordability, inflation, interest rates and climate are important to younger voters, but have the major parties lost touch with them? Can our politicians deliver good policy outcomes over the long term? After all, the future generations will have to live with the consequences of the actions (or inaction) of current governments at all levels. Deyi was elected president on the Young Liberals in March 2021 and is the first woman of Asian descent, and only the fifth ever woman to lead the organisation after Catherine Cusack, Marise Payne, Gladys Berejiklian and Natasha Maclaren-Jones. Deyi has written for The Financial Review and has a combined five years' experience working in federal and state politics.

Deyi Wu is President of the NSW Young Liberals.  Her brutal assessment of the election loss is both honest and troubling.  Deyi says the Liberals under Scott Morrison sought to divide the electorate and in doing so, drifted away from core Liberal policies. In this episode of The Internationalist, host Julio Bruno is joined by Peter Tatchell, a legendary human rights campaigner and director of the ‘Peter Tatchell Foundation' - an independent non-political party that seeks to promote and protect the human rights of people in the UK and beyond. In this in-depth conversation, Peter reveals his views on cancel culture and explains that everyone should have the opportunity to express their views, even though others may disagree with them, providing that they do not incite violence or harass others.Expressing his allegiance to the world and his passion for loving and supporting those who are struggling against injustices, Peter highlights his most notable campaigns, including the first mass movement of LGBTQ+ people in Britain. This was a protest against police harassment following the arrest of the leader of the Young Liberals, Louis Eaks, who was charged under an ancient 19th-century law that criminalised consenting same-sex behaviour and carried a maximum penalty of two years imprisonment. As well as a direct action movement that challenged police to arrest young LGBTQ+ people below the age of 21 who had signed affidavits admitting that they had sex before the consenting age, raising public awareness about the difference in the age of consent for heterosexuals and the LGBTQ+ community.Peter goes on to share his thoughts on the Ukrainian and Russian conflict, explaining that, in his opinion, the Ukrainian war is an extension of the oppression inside of Russia. He believes that Russia is shifting to be an imperialist force that seeks to interfere in the global affairs of other countries to erase Ukraine from the map to recreate the Soviet vision — advocating a traditional old-style Russian view of morality and family life where there is no space for the LGBTQ+ community. Finally, Peter touches upon his Netflix documentary ‘Hating Peter Tatchell' that provides a snapshot into his campaigns over the years, aiming to demonstrate that we are capable of making social change and emphasize that we don't have to accept the world as it is.

We begin season 3, the only way we possibly could, politically. Most listeners will be aware that Australia is currently in the midst of an federal election. Here at binge thinking, we wanted to speak with youth representatives of each the parties to find out what they think the issues are, and why they feel they are best placed to look after your interests. Fundamentally, we wanted to know what makes a young person see the a bright future with a particular political party? So we approached the offices of the Young Liberals, Young Labor and Victorian Young Greens, along with some of their millennial candidates. And while the Liberal and Labor parties did not respond to our requests for an interview, one millennial Greens candidate did. Adam Pulford is a 29 year old social activist running as the Greens candidate for the electorate of Wills, which stretches from Melbourne's Inner north of Brunswick through to Coburg, Pascoe Vale, Fawkner and Glenroy. The seat is currently held by Labor's Peter Khalil by 4.9% and is considered in play for the Greens who won 31% of the primary vote in the last election. So how did Adam, a 29 year old (originally from the Northern Territory) who grew up socially conservative and first voted Liberal in 2007, end up becoming a Greens political candidate with an actual chance of winning? Adam and Caspar sat down to discuss this, along with his life working as a social activist, his work with Greens MP Adam Bandt, his views on leadership, how he came to terms with his homosexuality, and going public about his mental health. As always, this episode was produced and edited by the incredibly talented and hard working Nina Roxburgh and features music by Big Gigantic.
