Presented by Brand USA Episode Notes Apple unveiled new travel-related features for several of its products on Monday at the 2024 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Travel Technology Reporter Justin Dawes provides details about Apple's updates.  Dawes notes the Apple Watch will have a new translation app, live update features for flights and Uber, and a setting to alert users before it rains. In addition, Siri is getting a connection to OpenAI, which will enable users to ask Siri anything they can ask ChatGPT, including trip planning info for free. And travelers will be able to use Apple Vision Pro virtual reality headsets on not just planes — but trains as well.  Next, InterContinental Hotels Group would like its property mix to include more premium, lifestyle and luxury brands. However, IHG is downplaying its plans due to its investors' preference for mid-market and extended-stay brands, reports Senior Hospitality Editor Sean O'Neill.  Although O'Neill notes moving upmarket is tantalizing for several reasons, IHG is responding to the demand it sees from hotel owners and investors. In addition, IHG's Americas CEO Jolyon Bulley said that some owners who want to do deals are concerned about the state of the lending environment. O'Neill adds that conversions are more appealing to some investors because of obstacles in the market.  Finally, Mallorca has seen massive protests over mass tourism that many residents believe has helped make housing unaffordable, among other problems. Travel Experiences Reporter Jesse Chase-Lubitz delves into the widespread anger on the island. Protests have erupted even in towns far from Mallorca's most popular beaches, with Chase-Lubitz citing one small town without tourist attractions that's been swarmed by tourists seeking lodging. One university professor and Mallorca native said the tourism boom has made it hard for residents to find affordable housing. The island's capital city Palma de Mallorca and four other cities have seen residential property prices jump more than 10% this year.  Chase-Lubitz adds several other incidents have fueled widespread Mallorcan anger about tourism, including a fight involving a group of young British men earlier this month.  Get more travel news at https://skift.com Producer/Presenter: Jose Marmolejos

Bozoma St. John has been a high-profile brand architect and marketing whiz for some of the world’s most innovative entertainment and tech companies. Her resume includes executive positions at Pepsi, Uber, Endeavor, Apple, and now Netflix. But as an African-American woman of Ghanaian parentage, St. John’s ascent up the corporate ladder has involved numerous struggles for rewards worthy of her contributions. Many of her early successes were created behind the scenes, including her notably arranging, while at Pepsi, Beyonce’s memorable 2013 Super Bowl half-time show. In 2016, as Head of Global Marketing for Apple Music, she hit the stage at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference. Her presentation became a viral sensation, with Buzzfeed commenting: “Bozoma St. John is the Coolest Person To Ever Go Onstage At An Apple Event.” It elevated St. John’s public profile, and she's now known in the public consciousness as much for being a style icon as a savvy behind-the-scenes corporate marketer. St. John talks to Rich and Gianni about her fall out with Pepsi after the Beyonce half-time show, getting LeBron James and Kevin Durant in the back seat of an Uber for an award-winning campaign, and why Gianni was such a good intern. [Yes, St. John was Gianni's boss for his 1st corporate internship.] She also talks about how she rebounded from tremendous grief after the death of her husband, why she relates so well to tech founders, and why she's so excited about Netflix's future.  Learn more about your ad choices. To say that Bozoma “Boz” Saint John redefines badassery is an understatement. She is undefeatable. A renegade executive with the career highlights to back up her boldness. And a woman who confidently  walks the talk.    As the Global Chief Marketing Officer at Netflix, the world's leading streaming entertainment service, Bozoma is bringing her marketing prowess, superstar resumé and larger-than-life personality to the streaming giant.    When the news broke that Boz was hired as Global CMO at Netflix this past July, there was a collective “amen!” felt on social media. After all, Netflix releases original content that catches our collective attention, and Boz is the “OG” when it comes to having her (fabulously manicured) finger on the pulse of global pop culture.    This episode of “Share Of Voice” is straight-up fire and will inspire you to go into 2021 with Big Bozoma Energy. She talks about living with urgency (“there's no need to wait for that thing you're going after”), being loud and speaking your truth, the importance of listening to your inner voice, and that disruptive moment when the world saw Bozoma, in a form-fitting fuschia dress and pink Louboutins, while delivering the keynote on stage at 2016's Apple Worldwide Developers Conference.    High-powered marketing executive Bozoma has always been her authentic self throughout her illustrious career (so far spanning 20 years), proving there's no glory in playing small. A breath of fresh air in the corporate world, Saint John has been shaking things up her way, rocking a fearless attitude, bold personality, and an even bolder voice. She might seem playful, but this executive did not come here to play.   At the beginning of her career, Boz got her start in marketing at Spike Lee's advertising agency, Spike DDB. She then went on to manage brands within the PepsiCo beverages portfolio, before becoming Head of Music and Entertainment Marketing at the CPG giant; followed by Head of Global Consumer Marketing at Apple Music & iTunes; then went on to serve as Chief Brand Officer at Uber; before taking on the CMO role for Endeavor.   Boz also recently launched “The Badass Workshop,” comprised of five 60-minute classes based on the secrets of her success, to achieve the ultimate goal: the greatest self. And in January, the workshop will be presented as a session titled “Anatomy of a Badass”, at Harvard MBA school.    You can also hear Boz's powerful voice in her podcast “Back to Biz with Katie and Boz,” alongside award-winning journalist Katie Couric.       And in the words of Boz, “LET'S GOOOOOOO”!  Produced by Dear Media

Picture this. It's 1983. The International Design Conference in Aspen has a special speaker: Steve Jobs from Apple. He's giving a talk called “The Future Isn't What It Used To Be.” He has a scraggly beard and really, really wants to recruit some industrial designers. In this talk, he talked about software. He talked about dealers. After watching the rise of small computer stores across the country and seeing them selling, and frequently helping people pirate, apps for their iconic Apple II, Steve Jobs predicts that the dealers were adept at selling computers, but not software. There weren't categories of software yet. But there were radio stations and television programs. And there were record stores. And he predicted we would transmit software electronically over the phone line. And that we'd pay for it with a credit card if we liked using it. If you haven't listened to the talk, it's fascinating. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KWwLJ_6BuJA In that talk, he parlayed Alan Kay's research into the DynaBook while he was at Xerox PARC to talk about what would later be called tablet computers and ebooks. Jobs thought Apple would do so in the 80s. And they did dabble with the Newton MessagePad in 1993, so he wasn't too far off. I guess the writers from Inspector Gadget were tuned into the same frequency as they gave Penny a book computer in 1983. Watching her use it with her watch changed my life. Or maybe they'd used GameLine, a service that let Atari 2600 owners rent video games using a cartridge with a phone connection. Either way, it took awhile, but Jobs would eventually ship the both the App Store and the iPad to the masses. He alluded to the rise of the local area network, email, the importance of design in computers, voice recognition, maps on devices (which came true with Google and then Apple Maps), maps with photos, DVDs (which he called video disks), the rise of object-oriented programming, and the ability to communicate with a portable device with a radio link. So flash forward to 1993. 10 years after that brilliant speech. Jobs is shown the Electronic AppWrapper at NextWORLD, built by Paget Press. Similar to the Whole Earth Catalog, EAW had begun life as a paper catalog of all software available for the NeXT computers but evolved into a CD-based tool and could later transmit software over the Internet. Social, legal, and logistical issues needed to be worked out. They built digital rights management. They would win the Content and Information Best of Breed award and there are even developers from that era still designing software in the modern era. That same year, we got Debian package managers and rpm. Most of this software was free and open source, but suddenly you could build a binary package and call it. By 1995 we had pan, the Comprehensive Perl Archive Network. An important repository for anyone that's worked with Linux. 1998 saw the rise of apt-get. But it was 10 years after Jobs saw the Electronic AppWrapper and 20 years after he had publicly discussed what we now call an App Store that Apple launched the iTunes Store in 2003, so people could buy songs to transfer from their Mac to their iPod, which had been released in 2001. Suddenly you could buy music like you used to in a record store, but on the Internet. Now, the first online repository of songs you could download had come about back in 93 and the first store to sell songs had come along in 98 - selling MP3 files. But the iTunes Store was primarily to facilitate those objects going to a mobile device. And so 2007 comes along and Jobs announces the first iPhone at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference . A year later, Apple would release the App Store, the day before the iPhone 3G dropped, bringing apps to phones wirelessly in 2008, 25 years after Jobs had predicted it in 1983. It began with 500 apps. A few months later the Google Play store would ship as well, although it was originally called the Android Market. It's been a meteoric rise. 10 years later, in 2018, app revenue on the iOS App Store would hit 46.6 billion dollars. And revenue on the Google Play store would hit 24.8 billion with a combined haul between $71 billion and 101 billion according to where you look. And in 2019 we saw a continued 2 digit rise in revenues, likely topping $120 billion dollars. And a 3 digit rise in China. The global spend is expected to double by 2023, with Africa and South America expected to see a 400% rise in sales in that same time frame. There used to be shelves of software in boxes at places like Circuit City and Best Buy. The first piece of software I ever bought was Civilization. Those boxes at big box stores are mostly gone now. Kinda' like how I bought Civilization on the App Store and have never looked back. App developers used to sell a copy of a game, just like that purchase. But game makers don't just make money off of purchases any more. Now they make money off of in-app advertising and in-app purchases, many of which are for subscriptions. You can even buy a subscription for streaming media to your devices, obviating the need for buying music and sometimes video content. Everyone seems to be chasing that sweet, sweet monthly recurring revenue now. As with selling devices, Apple sells less but makes much, much more. Software development started democratically, with anyone that could learn a little BASIC, being able to write a tool or game that could make them millions. That dropped for awhile as software distribution channels matured but was again democratized with the release of the App Store. Those developers have received Operating systems, once distributed on floppies, have even moved over to the App Store - and with Apple and Google, the net result is that they're now free. And you can even buy physical things using in-app purchases, Apple Pay through an Apple credit card, and digital currency, closing the loop and fully obfuscating the virtual and the physical. And today any company looking to become a standard, or what we like to call in software, a platform, will have an App Store. Most follow the same type of release strategy. They begin with a catalog, move to facilitating the transactions, add a fee to do so, and ultimately facilitate subscription services. If a strategy aint broke, don't fix it. The innovations are countless. Amazon builds services for app developers and sells them a tie to wear at their pitches to angels and VCs. Since 1983, the economy has moved on from paying cash for a box of software. And we're able to conceptualize disrupting just about anything thanks to the innovations that sprang forth in that time where those early PCs were transitioning into the PC revolution. Maybe it was inevitable without Steve Jobs right in the thick of it. Technological determinism is impossible to quantify. Either way, app stores and the resultant business models have made our lives better. And for that we owe Apple and all of the other organizations and individuals that helped make them happen, our gratitude. Just as I owe you mine for tuning in, to yet another episode, of the history of computing podcast. We are so lucky to have you. Have a great day!

Not just in walking the world, but using our voices to actually change this narrative… not just with our friends, not just in our native tongues with people who speak the same language, but with those that look at you when your accent comes out, to use it in the rooms in which there are people who don't look like you, who don't understand your culture -- to use it in a powerful way.” - Bozoma Saint John Earlier this year, NDINI was the official media partner for the FACE Africa 10th Annual WASH Gala.  The Gala, which was held in New York City was a fundraiser for Water,  Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) programs and facilities across Africa.  It was also an opportunity to celebrate people who are working to create opportunities and to help improve the lives of people on the African continent.   Accepting the Voice of Change Award at this year's WASH Gala was Bozoma Saint John. In this episode, Bozoma delivers her powerful acceptance speech about being the voice of change. Bozoma Saint John is a businesswoman and marketing executive who has served as chief brand officer and worked on marketing for PepsiCo, Beats Music, Apple and Uber.  When Beats was purchased by Apple in 2014, Bozoma became the head of global consumer marketing for iTunes and Apple Music. She particularly captivated the public during her presentation of the redesigned Apple Music onstage during the 2016 Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, captivating both local and online audiences. Buzzfeed wrote that she was the "coolest" person to ever take the stage at an Apple keynote. Bozoma has also been recognized in media and magazines for her outstanding work, including Billboard Magazine's list of the top women in music, Fast Company's 100 most creative people, and AdWeek's most exciting personalities in advertising. Bozoma is currently the chief marketing officer (CMO) at William Morris Endeavor.  “Use your voice. Use it. It is powerful, even if it is singular. And then when there are two of us, let's make a loud noise.” - Bozoma Saint John   IN THIS EPISODE YOU WILL LEARN: Why it is important that our voice be carried on to the next generation The importance of empowering the next generation to make a difference in the world How using your voice can change the narrative of your culture and heritage The importance of knowing, being proud of, and expressing who you are How to make your voice heard even in silence How using our voices together makes a huge impact Follow NDINI on: Website: http://www.ndini.com/ Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/NDINImedia/ Twitter: @NDINImedia Instagram: @ndinimedia Follow The NDINI Podcast on iTunes and Stitcher and SoundCloud

It's been a newsworthy week in the world of data center. IDC released server numbers that validate what the recent spate of earnings has told us. The market's down from last year, but there are still winners and losers, and you don't want to get caught on the wrong side of that line! Even in the face of an uncertain server market, Dell Technologies released positive earnings. Matt & Steve go into thiose Is Nutanix heading towards the rocks, or just experiencing natural transition pains? Nutanix also relased earnings, which weren't postive. Do down earnings and the loss of a key executive point to Nutanix heading towards the rocks? Or are we just watching a painful transition to a new business model? Only time will really tell, but Steve & Matt talk about it anyway! Computex is very consumer focused, but there was drama on the AMD/Intel front, as the x86 CPU wars are heating up. Intel takes exception to AMD's claims of 2X performance on some supercomputer numbers, while AMD goes big in HPC. Matt also gives us an explanation of what's really happening when AMD says that they're cutting off x86 "technology transfer" to it's China JV. All that, and Steve's thinking about starting a Twitch feed that highlights his tractor -- a real life video game. Timeline: 01:10 Apple World Wide Developers Conference -- anything for IT? Keeping up with the pace of technological advances is no easy feat; thankfully our expert hosts, Jason Masters and Mike Etchart, are up to the challenge! We begin the hour with an analysis of the 2018 Apple World Wide Developers Conference which placed a significant emphasis on software upgrades. Notably, iOS 12 will continue to work on legacy devices, FaceTime can now accommodate up to 32 simultaneous users per session with an added Animoji filter option, and new devices will support Dolby Atmos for next-level surround sound. With sweet tunes top of mind, we learn how Apple Music will stack up against competing for streaming applications such as Spotify. Changing focus, The Wire Cutter's Geoff Morrison delves into the evolution of television technology. While most modern TVs are offered in HDR, your viewing experience will vary greatly depending on the set's resolution. Geoff also goes in depth describing the differences between 2K, 4K, and 8K TVs. Lastly, Geoff tells us about the newest broadcasting standard that will be here by winter of 2020; ATSC 3.0 will deliver Ultra HD and Dolby Atmos over the air for free, and will most likely have a box that you integrate into your current entertainment system. If your home is in need of a technology update, we have the information you need to make the best decision. Gerüchte gab es auch… vor allem dieses: Aside from larger 4.7 and 5.5-inch displays, the iPhone 6 is rumored to have an improved A8 processor, an improved camera with optical image stabilization, new backlighting technology and 802.11ac Wi-Fi. YouTube: iPhone 6 spotted during WWDC14 preparations Aber, Hardware gab es keine. Designprofi Sebastiaan de With ist schon einmal begeistert: Awesome features. Color. Shadow. Depth. Friendly and not garish. Great work by everyone at Apple who designed Yosemite and made it work. Sven sieht also keinen Sherlock-Alarm. This is always my favorite slide. Decent but not Earth-shattering pricing. Very glad to see them tackle this. There is no content yet.” erscheint. The desktop, flattened: OS X Yosemite in pictures Macstories: OS X Yosemite Overview ArsTechnica: OS X Yosemite unveiled at WWDC, features big UI overhaul The Verge: Apple’s WWDC banners show iOS 8, next OS X are coming Apple: iOS 8 - Family Sharing ArsTechnica: Apple gets heavy with gaming, announces Metal development platform In Spenderlaune?
