"The Great Gatsby" vs The Great Psychology with The Other Therapist, A. AliYou know this episode is worth another 16 minutes on your phone or device when the host herself specifically scripts an introduction for it. That involves the Great Gatsby. In a material way. So the title is a clearly spin on Michelle Obama's "When they go low, we go high." The is part two with the comedian and lawyer, Yasmin Elhady. There are actionable lessons in this episode so you may want a notepad on standby. Also, the hilarious video she said she'd publish at the end of this episode is already live on her Instagram @yasguru. A particularly poignant thing Sirad said: “But I also still feel a lot of like sadness and, just like bewilderment that my freshman year started with the inauguration of Trump, and it's ending with this entire public health crisis. So, yes, I realize it's been a month. Tbh I was and maybe to some extent still am someone who thinks art or, more specifically, creating it is unnecessary or unimportant or only worth it after all the other almost infinite responsibilities and tasks and intellectually rigorous work is completed. But art and making it is intellectually rigorous. In fact, in the unannounced hiatus I took from this I saw a post on ig (follow @aminaofskiveo) that essentially said, during these unexpected (for some) times one of the first things to which we fled is the arts, entertainment...media. When I am afraid and searching for meaning in something incomprehensible or reprehensible, art has a way of injecting displacing emotions. This episode and its partner, to be released tomorrow, should prepare you for the astounding (not an overstatement) lineup of guests and, importantly, topics to be published rapidly. Yes, even former Surgeon General, Vivek Murthy regards loneliness as an epidemic and a study carried out by Julianne Holt-Lundstad, at least, studied over 3.4 million people across the planet reveals shocking findings about loneliness. So, how does loneliness impact mind and body? Can you compensate for loneliness through a factor that has zilch to do with social interaction? And, what is the difference between loneliness and isolation? What does student debt have to do with it? The title says enough...To listen to the soul-stirring
A seasoned crowdfunding expert, Khalida DuBose, has coached and consulted more than 1,000 project creators on crowdfunding their products, services, charities, passions, and more. She got her start in crowdfunding in 2016 when she volunteered to raise $6k for one of her favorite charities. She surpassed her goal and raised $15k! Amazed at the power of crowdfunding she accepted a job as the head campaign coach for the niche crowdfunding platform. In just two short years Khalida helped creators raise tens of millions of dollars for their projects and passions. She helped a budding non-profit organization go from raising a little under $30k via crowdfunding in 2016/2017 to raising more than $200k the following year in 2018, and more than $1 million currently. She helped a college student, turned entrepreneur launch his project for a themed journal and raised more than $11k to share his idea and product with his target audience. She is passionate about educating, consulting, and watching clients thrive as they find alternative means of financing for bringing their passion, vision, product or service to the world without compromising on their vision of how they want to make an impact. As her instagram bio says, she reps 2.6% of tech. From Tesla to LinkedIn and from EMBA (executive MBA) to published author, Mona invites us to a glittery albeit at times constricting world where therapy, solitude, and vulnerability reign. Did I mention that some of those titles and positions were pursued together, yielding a precarious balance. Precarious to me but not to her as she likens it to a "full body workout." They say loneliness is not objective and quantifiable but subjective, your noticing a difference between the social connections you have and the ones you want.______________________Elaborating further, Deborah Yaffe in a December 2018 issue of PAW says that what may be a soul warping pit of dark desolation for me may be your social paradise and vice versa, although in less colorful language.______________________One of the places where we can experience loneliness is where we work.______________________Or rather in the work we one day hope to do.______________________In this episode I talk to Truman Scholar and Rhodes Scholar, Stephen Damianos about- privilege- the steep and high attrition of human rights lawyers- how the refugee crisis may actually be a crisis of us- and how it feels to be encompassed by those who have made different choices______________________Credits (inclusive but may not be exclusive)Music by Clueless Kit - stand under my umbrella - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - close your fridge it's cold - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - Passenger Seat (feat. køra) - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - 2 colours - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - snake - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Goosetaf & Timothy Infinite- Bumblebee - soundcloud.com/goosetafMusic by Ryan Little - You'll Be Okay - soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Ryan Little - Take It Easy - soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Ryan Little - Don't Act Tough - soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Clueless Kit - outset - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - live now - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by MYSM - Leaving - https://thmatc.co/?l=7A78156F
It fails to be anachronistic. Asma Uddin is the author of the recently released, "When Islam Is Not a Religion: Inside America's Fight for Religious Freedom." Yes, we discuss the book, which I have and from what I've read so far, is a s t o u n d i n g. But I also ask about her history, in true Skiveo style. IIs it Imposter's Syndrome or are they Gaslighting you? From the Peace Corps and Nonprofit Passion to Tesla and LinkedIn with Mona KhalilYou know an episode is worth the time when Audre Lorde is quoted. "Caring for myself is not self-indulgence, it is self-preservation, and that is an act of political warfare." What do the environments of Tesla and LinkedIn have to do with this? What does it look like to actually be apart of corporate diversity and inclusion? And once you get to a place where you'd be so "lucky" to be there, as some might think, should you yield to demands that you must be grateful for your position at the expense of cultivating a deeper sense of self-worth? What does it look like when your life outside of work or school gets hard? When productivity comes not from fulfillment or happiness, but from a dark place? And, on a lighter note, how pretentious can I sound?Listen and find out. In this episode Ezzaty and I blow past the niceties and get to the nitty gritty. We talk about an inadvertent or advertent (has yet to be entered under this meaning in Merriam Webster's) microaggression she’s frequently encountered at Penn, having to unlearn the “colonial mindset” with which she was inculcated growing up in Malaysia, and having a previous Rhodes scholar genuinely mentor her towards securing one of this year’s prestigious Rhodes scholarships, which will allow her to study _____ at Oxford, another step along her path to potentially occupying a ____ _____. Oh how the present comes from the past.Rather than a sweeping statement, this is a comment on how I even know Ezzaty. Tune in and you'll find out. You'll also hear, in this, part one of her series on Skiveo Radio, what we think of envy, why she went as far as Warsaw, Poland or Guatemala and dug in deep in Philadelphia and Malaysia, places she'd call home. This University of Penn senior, not to mention 2020 Rhodes Scholar, really threw me for a loop, again and again.Socialme on twitter: @skive0me on ig: @aminasalmost30 (skiveo’s taken last I checked—even though I amalgamated this word from two unrelated ones—and 26 is close to 30, right)Ezzaty on twitter: @ezzatyhasbullahEzzaty on ig: @ezzatyhasbullahCreditsMusic by Ryan Little - Take it Easy - https://soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by MYSM - Leaving - https://soundcloud.com/mysmmusicMusic by Clueless Kit - stand under my umbrella - https://soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - Passenger Seat (feat. idkkora) - https://soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - 2 colours - https://soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Ryan Little - after the rain - https://soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Goosetaf & Timothy Infinite- Bumblebee - https://soundcloud.com/goosetafMusic by Marc Wavy, formerly Clueless Kit - Come To A Stop (feat idkkora) - https://soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Ryan Little - You'll Be Okay - https://soundcloud.com/iamryanlittle
New season? ✅So, those of you who follow me on ig know at least some of why I've been away. We're in season 5 now and there’s already a lineup of incredible episodes. The first of which is unfinished business: these final 29 minutes of a series with Rosie Mottsmith of Tesla.I think she's cracked the code behind a statistic I saw this week in a presentation given at the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (I wasn't there but luckily I follow someone who was): "76% of high school seniors do not feel they are pursuing their purpose in life."If you're confused about where to pivot next, listen to this episode. And if you want to hear about a strange turn of events involving her Tesla offer letter (fun fact: she had nearly chose immigration law), also listen. Another fun fact: Nikola Tesla is credited with having drafted a design of the radio. Skiveo. Tesla. Radio. It all comes full circle.Check out Rosie in Business Insider: www.businessinsider.com/tesla-engineer-shares-why-she-destroys-things-for-work-2018-2CreditsMusic by Ryan Little - after the rain. - soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Clueless Kit (feat. If you’re in need of a mentor, Anna’s got you. This is part one in a series. Not only does the White House come up a number of times (e.g. one of her mentors is a former aide), but I also am reminded, with literally every response, why Anna Gifty is such a disruptor and astoundingly beneficial at that. She hasn’t failed to inspire me and after this episode you’ll understand why.CreditsMusic by Ryan Little - You'll Be Okay - soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Ryan Little - Don't Act Tough - soundcloud.com/iamryanlittleMusic by Clueless Kit - stand under my umbrella - https://thmatc.co/?l=CC693BD7Music by Clueless Kit (feat. What is “double consciousness?” WEB Du Bois branded black consciousness as such. Not only must you be aware of how you see yourself, you must also be aware of how others see you.Not only is this essentially the entire prelude to episode 39, “G e n e r a t i o n a l w e a l t h” but it’s interesting that while this resides in his book, “The Souls of Black Folk,” which I read, in full or in part—cannot recall, as per the syllabus in a class I took at Princeton, Du Bois embraced this dual telescope, at least in action. As the first black PhD from a staunch competitor of my alma mater (acc to USNWR, you’re losing), he said this.“The honor, I assure you, was Harvard’s.”And after having attended this all black alumni conference, which before 1942, i.e. the knowing admission of the first black students and after 1746, the founding of Princeton, would have been unacceptable, probably even in imagination alone, I can say “the honor, I assure you, is Princeton’s.”This is not black excellence. It is excellence.CBS, Time, Huffington Post, Rockefeller, Madame Noir, the University of Cambridge… Goldman Sachs (part two) on their dockets, yes—but overshadowed by some of the most practical and usable career and wealth-building advice I’ve ever heard. For similar episodes, check out the sheroars episodes (from the reluctant-at-first-to-then-eagerly attended all women-conference at Princeton: the mascot is a tiger so she roars...the recordings are far less corny) and the only one from the all-everyone conference (women were only admitted as undergrads starting in the sixties while the school itself was founded in 1746 so 1969 minus 1746 is 223 years), which is ep 39.This episode is from the all black alumni conference, beautifully titled Thrive. And this particular recording is well-suited for those anticipating, experiencing, or having left the back-end of a career change.Final order o' business: A transcript will become available for the hearing-disabled, those who dislike music (although it's fairly short), those who can't listen to a podcast above the screaming and running of their children, or prefer reading (can/can't relate).Credits Music by MYSM - Leaving - https://thmatc.co/?l=7A78156FMusic by Clueless Kit - live now - soundcloud.com/marcwavyMusic by Clueless Kit - outset - soundcloud.com/marcwavy
I can say that even if I weren’t one of two who had to listen to this episode in its entirety before hitting “publish,” I would still listen to this. This is coming from someone who can be wildly stingy with her time. Because that’s always going to zero. This is part three in a series with Misbah Uraizee of Facebook, which apparently gives you MONEY for having a baby and not only maternity leave but also paternity leave, both of which seem relatively indeterminate. And also Microsoft, Misbah’s former place of work, has musallahs in every office. There are even more mind-imploding revelations in this show. Misbah is a Product Manager @ Facebook working on Newsfeed & Stories. Previously she was at Microsoft working on HoloLens, Augmented Reality and Virtual Reality. She is a graduate of Yale University. How is this episode unlike other episodes? Aside from the fun you can tell I clearly had with producing, it was and is refreshing to hear the blend of humility and power in Mottsmith's words.I will likely provide a transcript later so return to this spot if you prefer reading.Although in honesty, there are some things that sound different spoken. And this is an episode I'd listen to even if I weren't the one who had to listen and relisten and rerelisten in production. If you ever want to see me producing Skiveo Radio, check out my stories on ig because I occasionally share bts-es (behind the scenes). What else. Why is it called work-life balance when your life, to echo Prince Ea, came first? This is part two of three with Misbah Uraizee, Product Manager at Facebook. She is a graduate of Yale and was formerly at Microsoft, developing scifi-meets-Harry Potter-esque AR/VR.The person writing this is the host of Skiveo Radio, Amina, me! As a product of Princeton and Penn, I seek to undermine the status quo by pulling the veil back on the trappings of privilege because as fellow biologist, Stephen Jay Gould (although he was in practice) said, "I am somehow less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops."Join others who've subscribed to the Skiveo Newsletter for a free pdf, nearly 20 pages in length, in which I document 97 science-backed tips for improved productivity and creativity.
