Effective sponsorship has been the key to success in Lee's AA Program. Though sponsorship is often discussed, the role Lee's sponsor has played throughout Lee's sobriety is especially illuminating in a way I wish every AA newcomer could see.  From the time they first met and throughout the careful working of the 12 steps, to the point when Lee started sponsoring others, the importance of having a sponsor and being a sponsor has been demonstrated by both men. Of particular note is the gift of time and attention that his sponsor unselfishly gave Lee, even in the midst of building his business and raising children. Hearing Lee describe it, it's clear that both he and his sponsor not only embraced the concept of working with others but found the vital activity of sponsorship itself highly enriching to them and the lives of others. What's more, it's evident that Lee has applied this same dedication to the rest of his program and life. With over 8 years of sobriety and still under 30 years of age, Lee's captivating story provides lots of hope for younger AAs and a meaningful reminder of the basic elements of the Program that are so necessary to staying sober.  To me, “Keep it simple” is a mantra that could be easily applied to Lee's daily program. As you listen to this AA Recovery Interviews podcast, I think you'll agree and find the next hour most enjoyable. So, welcome to my AA brother and friend, Lee H. [This is an encore of Episode 23, originally released April 22, 2021]. If you've enjoyed my AA Recovery Interviews series, have a listen to Lost Stories of the Big Book, 30 Original Stories Missing from the 3rd and 4th Editions of Alcoholics Anonymous. It's an engaging audiobook I narrated to bring these stories to life for AA members who've never seen them. These timeless testimonials were originally cut to make room for newer stories in the 3rd and 4th Editions. But their vitally important messages of hope are as meaningful today as when they were first published. Many listeners will hear these stories for the first time. Lost Stories of the Big Book is available on Audible, Amazon, and iTunes. It's also available as a Kindle book and in Paperback from Amazon if you'd like to read along with the audio. I also invite you to check out my latest audio book, “Alcoholics Anonymous: The Story of How More Than One Hundred Men Have Recovered From Alcoholism”. This is the word-for-word, cover-to-cover reading of the First Edition of the Big Book, published in 1939. It's a comfortable, meaningful, and engaging way to listen to the Big Book anytime, anyplace. Have a free listen at Audible, i-Tunes, or Amazon.

Bibliografia: Newman-Toker DE, Hsieh YH, Camargo CA Jr, Pelletier AJ, Butchy GT, Edlow JA. Week FourDecember 24, 2021Good News for the Working ClassLuke 2:1-20When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let us go now to Bethlehem and see this thing that has taken place, which the Lord has made known to us.” Luke 2:15Sheep are very dependent animals and require all of their daily needs to be provided. Since they don't have a strong survival mechanism, they are easy prey for predators. When sheep are in an open, hostile environment, they require a protector, a shepherd who guards and guides the sheep. Without a shepherd, death of the sheep is certain.Although being a shepherd was a common profession, it was not a very well respected profession. The shepherd was not seen as noble. Instead, the shepherd was regarded as dirty, low class, and unprincipled. The shepherd, who worked outdoors all the time, had to combat the weather as well as combat carnivorous animals like wolves, bears, and lions. On occasion, a shepherd also battled thieves who sought to steal the sheep. Without a shepherd, the sheep might wander away and perish. The shepherd was required to be alert, watchful, fearless, and attentive. On that holy night, the skies became the backdrop of a magnificent drama that invited the ordinary to participate in an extraordinary event. The night became as day as the good news was proclaimed to the socially impoverished. God calls everyone to experience saving grace. The shepherds did not question, “What is this?” or “What does this mean?” Rather, being inspired by their fidelity, they chose to collectively travel to witness what had been declared to them. Their faith made them a part of the sacred scene that we cherish during this season. Once they arrived at the manger, they kept watch over the Lamb of God who also became the Good Shepherd!Dr. Lee H. Effective sponsorship stands out as a major tenet in the success of Lee's AA Program. ADVENT WEEK THREEDecember 13, 2020Joy to the COVID WorldIsaiah 6:1-4, 8-11“Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.” Isaiah 6:9bJoy tends to be defined with deep spiritual meaning, and happiness tends to be defined with the temporal and fleeting. I wonder: is this distinction between joy and happiness splitting strands of hair, or is it the split ends of a single strand of hair? I think Isaiah experienced joy and happiness as a single, illusive strand that he desperately longed to know as a unity in the presence of God. As Isaiah considered the social and political realities of his day, he faced a dream deferred by the death of King Uzziah. To be in the presence of the Lord fills many believers with thoughts of joy. Who among the faithful would not be filled with joy by seeing and hearing the Holy One? Unfortunately, the words spoken to Isaiah were not words that inspired joy or happiness within Isaiah. And the words God instructed Isaiah to speak also did not inspire joy among the people. “Keep listening, but do not comprehend; keep looking, but do not understand.” For Isaiah, God appeared in the time of trouble, but God’s joy is declared after the struggle. This has been a year of profound trouble and struggle as millions have been victimized and more than one million have died worldwide from Coronavirus. As we seek God’s face this Advent, our hearts long for the experience of joy in the COVID world. Yet God’s word to Isaiah instructs us to not overlook the desolation wrought by coronavirus. Despite the devastation and death, we are in the presence of our Holy God; and it is only by turning from conventional wisdom that we will be restored to life.Dr. Lee H. We finally get around to doing an episode featuring special guest, Lee H!  Despite the fact that we recorded in the morning this time, we somehow found a way to use the words, “bottled in bond”. Topics: We ponder how missing children are found today now that their pictures are no longer printed on containers of milk.   John and Lee talk about how far back they go as friends and how they were the tallest kids in their first grade class.    The many formative years spent playing D&D.   This somehow leads into concentration, creativity, and “talent”.   Making comedy tapes in High School.  Inspired by  The Firesign Theatre   The three reveal whether or not they are “Morning People”.   After a break, Lee talks about his literary interests and his novels.   Lee's “Walls of Covenant” series: https://www.amazon.com/Walls-Covenant-Raising-Troupe-ebook/dp/B06XHCL2CD   John's Old Movie viewing project:  films based on the Wyatt Earp/O.K. Corral story.   Lee tells us about all of the Civil War locations he's been visiting. The song:  "My Little Brother's The Anti-Christ"

We investigate the claim that an alternative antibiotic to cephalosporins (e.g., cefazolin) should be selected for penicillin-allergic patients in the perioperative setting.  Claim 1. Alternative antibiotics may be as efficacious in preventing surgical site infections Claim 2. Cephalosporins (e.g., cefazolin) may be unsafe due to cross-reactivity.  Claim 3. Administering cephalosporins (e.g., cefazolin) may be against the standard of care. This paper, with results that many find very surprising, has started a bit of a buzz in the PT world. What do we make of the results? Can we trust the results? What does this mean in clinical practice? We were able to discuss these topics and more with the researchers themselves as Adrian Traeger and James McAuley were kind enough to share their time and help us navigate these new findings. Accurate education on pain has become a popular mantra in physical therapy practice, specifically around chronic pain. A common argument is to educate at risk patients early in the process to reduce the likelihood of their pain becoming chronic. But just how effective is this? Does it really make that much of a difference? Is it addressing the driving factors related to these subjects? The Secure Transportation and Executive Protection News for Tuesday, September 11th, 2018 In remembrance of 9/11 today, this podcast episode is focusing on 9/11 and terrorism-related news articles.   From USA Today On the anniversary of Sept. 11 attacks, terrorists readying to attack again: 9/11 commissioners By Thomas H. Kean and Lee H. Hamilton It might be tempting to think we have turned the tide on terrorism. After all, the Islamic State is on the run in Iraq and Syria, and terrorist attacks are on the decline globally for the third consecutive year. But that would be a grave mistake. Violent extremists are regrouping and will strike again. The 9/11 Commission recommended three core goals for U.S. policy: Attack terrorists and their organizations, protect against and prepare for attacks, and prevent the continued growth of Islamist terrorism. The United States has effectively carried out the first two elements of this strategy but made little headway on the third. Until we do, the scourge of terrorism will continue to plague us. https://www.usatoday.com/story/opinion/2018/09/11/september-11-attacks-anniversary-terrorism-memorial-new-strategy-column/1212208002/   =======    And from the Pew Research Center By John Gramlich Defending against terrorism has remained a top policy priority for Americans since 9/11 Over the course of more than 15 years and three presidential administrations, Americans have consistently said that defending the nation against terrorism should be a top policy priority for the White House and Congress, according to Pew Research Center surveys conducted since shortly after the attacks of Sept. 11, 2001. In January of this year, 73% of U.S. adults said defending the country against future terrorist attacks should be a top priority for President Donald Trump and Congress – making this one of the most frequently cited priorities, along with improving the educational system (72%) and strengthening the nation’s economy (71%).     http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2018/09/11/defending-against-terrorism-has-remained-a-top-policy-priority-for-americans-since-9-11/   =======   And from CBS News FBI Director Christopher Wray: "Terrorism today moves at the speed of social media" The FBI has made a lot of changes in its structure and mindset in the 17 years since Sept. 11, 2001. Christopher Wray took the reins of the bureau just over a year ago. He and the men and women who keep Americans safe from terrorism have been busier than ever. The Joint Terrorism Task Force, which includes the FBI and other federal, state and local agencies, receives about 15,000 tips a year. That's roughly 40 per day or two an hour. In an interview with CBS News co-host, Norah O'Donnell spoke to Wray about why he believes the FBI is far better prepared to counter terror threats than it was in 2001. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/christopher-wray-fbi-director-911-120-terrorism-related-arrests-in-past-year/  ======= And as I wrap this special 9/11 podcast episode I’d like to relay my 9/11 story. It is amazing that it has been 17 years. It still feels like yesterday. We all remember 9/11. I have a permanent daily reminder – a tattoo of two hands clasping with numbers 9-11-01 above. We all have stories of where we were on that fateful day. For me I was on the 25th floor of One World Financial Center which was and is diagonally south of the towers. When the first plane hit it sounded like a dumpster was dropped from a garbage truck – kind of metal and tin meets asphalt. I looked out the window and saw papers flying by. Coworkers were saying a small plane had struck one of the towers. A look of fear was on their faces. I immediately took the elevator down to the lobby and went outside to get a better view, I called my wife who was working for the same firm but on the 5th floor. Told her what happened. She remained in the building. As I was looking up bodies started falling. It was horrible to see. As I looked away a dark shadow came across the sky with a loud roar. The second plane had it the other tower. People started running south screaming “another plane,” “we’re under attack!” Some were thinking that it was a missile. I continued to head south to South End Ave – our firm’s rally point for contingency was there. I was having a difficult time finding my wife after the second plane communication lines were jammed. After about 20 minutes of walking back and forth frantically asking coworkers, we found each other back at the rally point. Some time had passed without getting any clear direction on what to do. There was no plan for this. We weren’t exactly sure where to go. We were slowly watching the twin towers burn. A police officer came by to our group and told us to move north; we never thought that the towers would come down. We moved north at a leisurely pace; my wife was frantically trying to contact our family on the cell phone to no avail. Right at the north cove marina and the winter garden she finally got through. We let them know we were fine and walking north. Her dad told us that there were other planes unaccounted for. At that moment the first tower began to fall. I screamed out “Oh, fuck! Run!” That was the last words her dad heard for hours. We ran. People were getting trampled. Some were jumping in the Hudson River, others jumping into ferry and fire boats that had made their way along Hudson. At that moment self-preservation took over, and I forgot about everything and everyone and ran. We turned the corner just in time. We made it safely passed the plumes of smoke, debris, and dust. Others did not. We were ushered through a construction gate by a man in a security jacket and finally back onto West St and headed north while fighter jets flew overhead – people ducking thinking jets would crash into other buildings. We continued walking north for about 30 to 45 minutes stopping along the way to catch our breath and try to soak in all of what happened. When the second tower fell, we were far enough away that no smoke or debris could reach us. Our walking ended when we arrived at the NYC Sanitation garage on West St. near West 14 St.  Other stranglers entered the garage covered in ash and debris. They offered the use of their bathroom, and we watched the TV they had. Our first opportunity to hear and see about the Pentagon, and Pennsylvania. We sat there glued to the TV for a couple of hours making sure it was safe to venture out and making plans on how to get back home. We eventually made it back to Staten Island around 6 pm to watch CNN non-stop for several days.  I’d like to end this podcast with a moment of silence in honor of the heroes and victims of September 11, 2001. ====================== Links to all news stories mentioned in this podcast are available at the archive website securitydrivernews.libsyn.com.
