This week's guest is Adam Fletcher from The Copyrights. In the nearly 20 years he's been the singer and bassist of the Carbondale, Illinois-based band, Fletcher has toured all over the U.S. and Europe, shared the stage with some of punk rock's biggest names, and put out six albums (in addition to a number of other EPs and splits). Following a seven-year gap between records, The Copyrights will release their long-awaited new album, Alone in a Dome, on Fat Wreck Chords in October. With an outstanding new full-length on the way and the band going back on the road soon, Fletcher has a lot to discuss in terms of new developments. Recently, he did just that when he chatted with My First Band host Tyler Maas. Along the way, Fletcher also talked about his musical start in bands like Moloko Plus and The Last Laugh, formative experiences in the basement show and house show scene, notable moments from his present project's impressive two-decade run, and some things he'd like to do with The Copyrights before it's all over. My First Band is sponsored by Mystery Room Mastering and Lakefront Brewery. The show is edited by Jared Blohm. One Step Beyond launches 2021 with a two parter about two people who refused to let the pandemic of 2020 prevent them making planned life changes. In part 1, Adam Fletcher - yes, he is a relation - talks about his volunteer work with asylum seekers on the Greek island of Samos, and why it has inspired him to hang up his career as a touring musician, including lucrative work in a touring Abba tribute band, and go back to college to become a doctor. In an interview conducted from the Island of Samos on New Year's Eve, Adam talks about the conditions faced by the refugees on the island, many of whom have been living in squalor for years now, the work of various charities and NGOs, and why he feels blessed and privileged to have the opportunity to spend time with them, and to embark on a fresh career. Some of the articles mentioned in this Episode:https://www.nytimes.com/2020/02/07/world/europe/greece-samos-migrants.htmlhttps://www.rescue.org/video/finding-courage-continue-greeces-refugee-campshttps://www.rescue.org/country/greece#what-caused-the-crisis-in-greecehttps://www.instagram.com/p/CJHGmJwjj38/https://observers.france24.com/en/20200918-blocked-camp-samos-refugees-demand-legal-justice A list of NGOs and charities typically operating on the island of Samos, as supplied by Adam Fletcher: Action for EducationAvocats Sans Frontières France (ASF France)The Flying Seagulls ProjectGlocal RootsHelp Refugees / Choose LoveIndigo VolunteersMed’Equaliteam (this is the NGO Adam currently volunteers for)Movement on the GroundPrecious Plastic Samos Project Armonia Project TEN Refugee4RefugeesRefugee Law Clinic BerlinSamos VolunteersStill I RiseVerein FAIRThe One Step Beyond Supporter page (i.e. the tip jar):https://supporter.acast.com/onestepbeyondFor questions or comments, or to subscribe to the newsletter, e-mail Onestepbeyond@ijamming.net Join One Step Beyond on social media at:Instagram is OneStepBeyondPodcastFacebook is One Step Beyond with Tony FletcherTwitter is OneStepBeyondP1And your host can be found here:tonyfletcher.net Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/onestepbeyond. London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine Audio News - LSHTM Podcast

AUDIO NEWS LSHTM March 24th, 2009 In this edition of Audio News…… AIDS expert, writer, and epidemiologist Elizabeth Pisani recently returned to the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine—where she trained and did research for her MSc and PhD to tell Peter Goodwin about her new book: The Wisdom of Whores, which delivers home truths about the 'business of AIDS' which could—potentially—prevent millions of people from dying. Andrew Prentice discusses the 'experiment of Nature' being harnessed by his group in a research effort spearheaded by his colleague Branwen Hennig in The Gambia where seasonal variations in the availability of crops create altering nutritional environments for mothers around the time of conception. The scientist are hoping to reveal effects that maternal diet can have on gene expression, and how this in turn could affect the future health of newly-conceived babies. Adam Fletcher tells Audio News about 'detached' youth programmes to help avoid problems with drugs and alcohol among young people. Social workers go to the young people—wherever they are—joining in their social networks, rather than trying to persuade them to drop into special centres.
