Travels With the Dark: Stories from humans in the “Limit-Experience” is our series concerning real occurrences of human beings when they are brought into or more aptly, up against “limit-experience”, a phrase from French and German philosophers that attempts to describe in the most general way what human beings undergo when they are thrust into situations that push them to their limits and conditions of maximum intensity. While originally this was intended to be a series in the “True Crime” genre  I wondered to myself if subject and theme could extended outward. It might not even only encompass the most negative aspect of human experience.I think the genesis of this two part topic was probably my first viewing of the David Fincher series Mindhunter which is a dramatization and representation of the work of Ann Burgess and John Douglas as they tried to investigate and comprehend the phenomenon of serial killers in our society. This lead me to decide to do an episode on serial murder itself.The preparation for these episodes was for me immense, perhaps greater than any episode I have created on this podcast. It involved multiple sources and books and many cases often of a most unpleasant nature and involved reintroduction to some rather famous cases like Ted Bundy, Rodney Alcala and John Wayne Gacey. Sometimes episodes on our podcast are the invention of others and I think our producer Laurie Strickland was the person who brought up this particular idea. Serial crime is such an outsized topic: for example in one relatively small country alone, France, the discussion of the crimes there comprised an entire episode.In this episode, Mitch and Deb head across the Atlantic and into some of the darkest corners of serial-killer history to unpack three cases that, outside of France and Belgium, rarely get the attention they warrant. Drawing on more than a decade of living in France and going down the rabbit hole of its true-crime archives, Deb brings a perspective shaped by immersion— the kind that only comes from reading between the lines of a country's own media, myths, and collective memory.Starting with Henri Landru, France's very own Bluebeard, a polite, almost forgettable man who turned lonely wartime classifieds into a hunting ground, Mitch and Deb dig into how scarcity, social upheaval, and the chaos of World War I created the perfect backdrop for a predator who didn't look like one, and how Landru managed to make women disappear so thoroughly that even now, the details feel more like rumor than record.From there, things take an even darker turn with Marc Dutroux, a case that still haunts Belgium and shook public trust to its core. Rex Heuermann told the therapist working with his family that the dark thoughts started in high school. He knew they weren't healthy. He couldn't name what they were. But he knew something inside him wasn't right. He said he started reading books about death — one in particular called Death Scenes, filled with images of mutilated bodies, severed limbs, pure carnage. That's what was feeding his mind during the years when most teenagers are figuring out who they want to be. For Rex, sex and violence were merging into something that would eventually become unstoppable. He said one thought fed another fed another, deeper and deeper, until it consumed him. He said he couldn't put the brakes on it. He said his outlet was to kill. The Peacock documentary gave the world something no courtroom or police interrogation ever would have produced — extended therapy sessions with one of the most methodical serial killers in American history. Rex described a four-day kill cycle. He timed his body dumps with a stopwatch. He built his kill room in the bedroom where he grew up. Did you like the Monster Donut and hydra details?? Young Annabeth is SO CUTE. Percy knows just what to say to Tyson. He also knows how to break the tension. Boys are gross. Clarisse makes a VERY dramatic entrance. How did she know Annabeth wasn't inside?? Annabeth and Clarisse go toe-to-toe in a battle of wits. Then Percy and Clarisse go toe-to-toe in a battle of strength. Did Percy think he could beat Clarisse, or was he just giving Annabeth time to make her move? Why is Clarisse so hellbent on not having any other demigods with her? Time to make some big choices! Will it be Scylla or…that other one? Clarisse really doesn't like the idea of sacrificing her men. There's that bleeding heart again. Grover is an excellent Protector. Demigods are just bad at listening. Neither Luke nor Thalia wants to go to Camp. Luke looks SO emo in this scene, and we're eating it up. What were your original theories as to why Annabeth's bracelet kept returning to the boat? We get a glimpse of Rainbow!! Percy realizes he's got some new abilities. Will Tyson grow into more of his Poseidon skills? Small choices make the biggest difference sometimes. Percy has some great advice in this scene, but is it a little too clean and perfect? Clarisse's men are willing to follow her anywhere, and you can tell that sits heavy on her shoulders. Was Percy channeling Sally Jackson in this scene with the sandwich? We get the full prophecy, and even though it's straight from the book, we're glad to hear it from start to finish. It's time to follow through on those big choices! “Heroes slay monsters, they don't run from them.” Sometimes it's hard to remember, especially in the beginning, that Clarisse is a hero, too.
