Found a great connection with a recent post and Mitch Albom's Tuesday People Podcast. Find the link HERE for his interview with Aaron Lazar where he is sharing the story of his diagnosis with ALS and the fact that he's not caught up with wasting his time on things that he can't control and don't represent any value to his life. The post came from Reads with Ravi (@readswithravi) and it was a powerful & quick reminder: “If you don't prioritize your life, someone else will.” These go hand in hand in reminding me, what am I spending my time and efforts on? It got me thinking that I need to not only make sure I ask this question to the many staring back at me in my mirror each day, but also… who do I want driving “my bus” throughout my life? Good questions for all of us to ask ourselves. Thanks for listening. In the year before the pandemic, I was on a contract with Norwegian Cruise Line performing the musical Footloose. In past seasons you've heard me speak with some members of that company (Megan Hoxie, David Ruttura, Eric Jordan Young) And in today's episode I'm bringing on another one of the people that I met through that show, Dominic Thrasher, one of the ones who I grew closest to during that contract who was actually in a cabin just a couple of doors down from my own. But just as the world was coming out of the pandemic, getting back to a somewhat normal life, Dominic was diagnosed with ALS, similar to Broadway actor Aaron Lazar. We talk about his very difficult journey of realizing and accepting his own illness and how he is choosing to live the remaining months and possibly years that he has left. And if there's anything you take away from this very heartfelt and thoughtful conversation, I hope it is a sense of both gratitude and persistence in your own life: being grateful for what you have, even the most basic of things, and a drive to continue to pursue the things that you want. It is a lesson that Dominic has carried with him his whole life and is now being put to the test in a way he never thought or imagined. ----- (And with this episode Why I'll Never Make It begins its new release day of Wednesday instead of Monday. This is mainly to adjust to my touring schedule with Beetlejuice, as the weekends are full of shows and Tuesdays give me more time to produce these episodes each week.) ---------- Subscribe to get early and ad-free access to the full conversation with each guest, which includes the auditions stories that are only available to subscribers. The Giraffes are a cult band from Brooklyn that has been leveling crowds with their signature mixture of heavy rock, punk, metal and surf since 1996. A well-earned reputation for mayhem has followed the band from the start. Their guitarist was shot in the leg outside of a White Castle late one night in Brooklyn after being accosted by an off-duty fire marshal with an itchy trigger finger. The bullet is still lodged in his knee. Their singer Aaron Lazar has suffered multiple Sudden Cardiac Death events. He has a defibrillator implanted in his chest which has erroneously shocked him on stage. During a show at Chicago's legendary Double Door, it sent 700 volts directly into his heart 3 times in 30 seconds. He finished the set. I've known Aaron for more than 20 years now and he's one of my closest friends. We have Been In Some Shit together. We've toured together, I punched him in the neck, I returned his rental car the first time he died, we were in a band together and it broke up in a hail of recrimination. We're still friends. I'm eerily close with his cat, Bill. We talk a lot here about how death renewed his interest in life and I think it's a really useful conversation. We also play a couple of new songs, one from his band D'NT with former Beat the Devil drummer Mitchell King and one from the Giraffes. Enjoy.

After playing for eight years (ages 5-13), he decided to forgo the concert pianist route and try something new. He found his artistic outlet through art classes and musical theater. After playing “Oliver” in Oliver! and “Curly” in Oklahoma! in 7th and 8th grade respectively, he auditioned for a role in the local community theater–Peninsula Center Stage's production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Even though the show had been fully cast by the time of his audition, the creative team decided to foster his young talent and create a role of a “13th apostle” or “apostle wanna-be” just so he could be in the show. One night after a high-school performance of Evita, a representative from the SF Opera who happened to see the show invited Adam to audition for the new upcoming documentary opera based on the life of Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay city council member who was assassinated along with the mayor of SF in 1978. As a result of this invited audition, he was cast as “Young Harvey.” Adam's big break came with the opportunity to play “Marius” in the national tour of Les Miserables. This job led to him being cast in the Broadway revival and his subsequent Broadway debut. Within the short 14 months that the show played the Broadhurst Theater, he had the benefit of working with many Broadway veterans including Lea Salonga, Judy Kuhn, Gary Beach, Daphne-Rubin Vega, Norm Lewis, Ann Harada, Aaron Lazar (seen in photo), among many others. Since Les Miserables, he has journeyed from the islands of Mamma Mia! to the African pridelands of The Lion King. He's gone from the tropics of Once On This Island to the Arabian deserts of Aladdin. His mixed ethnicity has allowed him to play varied roles, and he thanks his parents for their whole-hearted encouragement to pursue a life in the arts. Adam, his wife Kelly, and their sons Jack and Alex now make their home in Chicago. After touring for two years with the first national tour of Disney's Mary Poppins as a dance captain and swing, Kelly happily joined the Broadway company and stayed with it until its closing in 2013. After playing for eight years (ages 5-13), he decided to forgo the concert pianist route and try something new. He found his artistic outlet through art classes and musical theater. After playing “Oliver” in Oliver! and “Curly” in Oklahoma! in 7th and 8th grade respectively, he auditioned for a role in the local community theater–Peninsula Center Stage’s production of Jesus Christ Superstar. Even though the show had been fully cast by the time of his audition, the creative team decided to foster his young talent and create a role of a “13th apostle” or “apostle wanna-be” just so he could be in the show. One night after a high-school performance of Evita, a representative from the SF Opera who happened to see the show invited Adam to audition for the new upcoming documentary opera based on the life of Harvey Milk, the country’s first openly gay city council member who was assassinated along with the mayor of SF in 1978. As a result of this invited audition, he was cast as “Young Harvey.” Adam’s big break came with the opportunity to play “Marius” in the national tour of Les Miserables. He’s gone from the tropics of Once On This Island to the Arabian deserts of Aladdin. His mixed ethnicity has allowed him to play varied roles, and he thanks his parents for their whole-hearted encouragement to pursue a life in the arts. Adam, his wife Kelly, and their sons Jack and Alex now make their home in Chicago. After touring for two years with the first national tour of Disney’s Mary Poppins as a dance captain and swing, Kelly happily joined the Broadway company and stayed with it until its closing in 2013. With the help of his high-school mentor, Peter Devine, Adam discovered his love for the theater and made his decision to pursue a career in the arts. It was also during this time that he attended the summer programs of the American Conservatory Theater (ACT) in downtown SF and the California Institute of the Arts (CSSSA) in Valencia, CA.One night after a high-school performance of Evita, a representative from the SF Opera who happened to see the show invited Adam to audition for the new upcoming documentary opera based on the life of Harvey Milk, the country's first openly gay city council member who was assassinated along with the mayor of SF in 1978. As a result of this invited audition, he was cast as “Young Harvey” and participated not only in a powerful show performed on the anniversary of Milk's assassination, but also in a re-enactment of the historic candlelit march down Market Street just prior to the show.At New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Adam studied with the Collaborative Arts Project Musical Theater program (CAP21) as well as the Stonestreet Film and Television Studios program. After graduating with a BFA in Theater, he worked the regional theaters, performed on cruise ships, and toured the country as Cinderella's Prince before landing his first Equity (Actor's Union) production as Nanki-poo in Marriott Theater's Hot Mikado.Around this time, he met his future wife while doing a Christmas show in Hershey, PA. She was a rag-doll/ballerina and he was a well-padded, white-bearded Santa Claus (with black eyebrows). While being paired as waltz partners might have helped the relationship blossom, it's possible the chocolate may have had something to do with it…Adam Jacobs and Aaron LazarAdam's big break came with the opportunity to play “Marius” in the national tour of Les Miserables. We’re chatting with Broadway star and series regular on Fox’s “Filthy Rich”: Aaron Lazar. Aaron worked his way through every aspect of this industry—film, TV, theatre—with the same tenacity that almost led him to become a surgeon. But instead of never sleeping in medical school, he chose the city that never sleeps. 11 Broadway productions later (including “The Phantom of the Opera,” “A Little Night Music,” and “Dear Evan Hansen), plus acclaimed films such as “J.Edgar,” “The Wolf of Wall Street,” not to mention roles on hit TV shows such as “Quantico,” “The Blacklist,” and “Blue Bloods,” he’s garnered an authenticity that helps him define and believe in himself as an artist. Aaron shares what he’s learned on each step of the ladder: how becoming a father shifted his attitude towards the work and how improvising with Leonardo DiCaprio led to some movie magic. He’s a great example of someone who works hard and stays open to learning on the job, whether that’s performing 8 live shows a week, working 15 hours a day on set, or navigating life in between. There’s no business like show business, and he’ll tell you it’s so.
