Timur, der in den 1320er Jahren in die türkisierte Barlas-Konföderation in Transoxiana (im heutigen Usbekistan) hineingeboren wurde, erlangte bis 1370 die Kontrolle über das westliche Chagatai-Khanat. Von dort aus führte er Feldzüge durch West-, Süd- und Zentralasien, den Kaukasus und Südrussland und besiegte dabei die Khane der Goldenen Horde, die Mamelucken in Ägypten und Syrien, das aufstrebende Osmanische Reich sowie das späte Sultanat von Delhi in Indien und wurde so zum mächtigsten Herrscher der muslimischen Welt. Mit diesen Eroberungen gründete er das Timuridenreich, das kurz nach seinem Tod wieder zerbrach. Historiker:innen schätzen, dass seine Feldzüge den Tod von Millionen von Menschen verursachten, weshalb seine Feldzüge in aller Regel als Völkermorde eingestuft werden. Award-winning documentary film maker Rubén Abruña helps us dig into one of the oldest problems in civil society… All around the world, there are serious problems caused by the various ways we deal with our toilet waste – all the poop and pee we humans create every day. We waste drinking water - Flushing toilets use massive amounts of water – for example, in a country like Switzerland, each person will flush over 40 litres a day down the toilet. Often, the sewage from water toilets is mixed with household waste water, so it's now contaminated with microplastics, cleaning chemicals, contraceptives and drug residues. And then, in most western societies, all that liquid waste is then mixed with industrial waste. So now we've got massive volumes of pretty toxic stuff to try and clean up, and separate into drinkable water and solid waste. In developing countries, millions of people still use open toilets, or have to defecate on the land around their houses. So here, there are massive issues with disease and vermin, and in some areas, even a safety risk from predatory animals. What's more, we're wasting precious resources, too. Our human pee and poop contains valuable nutrients, including significant quantities of nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium – NPK - the key elements that we need to growing food and other crops. Instead, we're using expensive fossil fuels and synthetic chemicals to provide these macronutrients. Back in his homeland of Puerto Rico over 20 years ago, Rubén Abruña experienced a sanitation epiphany when he sat on a dry toilet for the first time. He was amazed that he could poop using no water, leaving no stink, and that the deposit could be safely composted into fertilizer, without polluting the environment. It drove him nuts that more people were not doing the same, and this prompted him to make the award-winning film “Holy Shit: Can Poop Save the World?” Rubén has over 30 years of experience in the film, television, and radio industries. Ist es Abfall, der weggeworfen wird, oder eine Ressource, die wiederverwendet werden kann? Auf der Suche nach Antworten begibt sich der Regisseur Rubén Abruña auf eine investigative und unterhaltsame Suche durch 16 Städte auf vier Kontinenten. Er folgt der Fäkalienspur von den langen Pariser Abwasserkanälen bis zu einer riesigen Kläranlage in Chicago. Die vermeintliche, weltweit angewandte Lösung, die halbfesten Überreste der Kläranlage als Dünger zu verwenden, erweist sich als lebender Albtraum, denn sie enthalten Schwermetalle und giftige PFAS-Chemikalien. Können Ausscheidungen für den Anbau von Nahrungsmitteln genutzt werden und die drohende Düngerknappheit lindern? Er trifft die Poop Pirates aus Uganda, die mit ihrer Arbeit und ihren Liedern den Menschen beibringen, wie sie Fäkalien in sicheren Dünger verwandeln können. Im ländlichen Schweden zeigt ihm ein Ingenieur eine Trockentoilette, die aus Urin Dünger herstellt. In Hamburg und Genf entdeckt er Wohnkomplexe mit dezentralen Kläranlagen, die nicht an die Kanalisation angeschlossen sind und aus menschlichen Exkrementen Strom und Dünger erzeugen. Am Ende findet der Regisseur Antworten auf Wiederverwendung menschlicher Fäkalien die erhöhen weltweit Ernährungssicherheit, Umweltschutz, Hygiene und Abschwächung des Klimawandels. Vaicāts, vai nav grūti izdzīvot šajā laikā amatniekam, Juris Balodis atklāj, ka abru gatavošana viņam vairāk ir ir hobijs. "Man šajā ziņā ir paveicies, es varu sagatavoties nākotnei, vairāk sagatavot priekšdienām. Zinu, ka daudzi, kas šo darbu strādā kā izdzīvošanas darbu, viņiem ir ļoti grūti," vērtē Juris Balodis. Arī Anita Kovjazina norāda, ka krīze un tas, ka nav iespēja doties uz dažādiem tirgiem, viņu tik sāpīgi neskar. "Tiem, kam vienīgā nodarbošanās, ir sāpīgi, ir ko domāt, kā izdzīvot līdz brīdim, kad atkal varēs pilnvērtīgi strādāt," bilst Anita Kovjazina. 2021. gadā gadatirgus tiek plānots tradicionāli pirmajā jūnija nedēļas nogalē – 5. un 6. jūnijā.

Doctor Fernando Abruña El 20 de septiembre de 2017 Puerto Rico sufrió el embate del huracán María. Con vientos máximos sostenidos de 160 millas por hora, María destrozó todo lo que encontró a su paso. Tanto así que, a 178 días del paso del fenómeno, la Isla continúa sin recuperar al 100{91b45456afaff95aeea87caf28c9c1c0c94699ab34a183c04d9327ca422fb932} su servicio eléctrico, de agua, de comunicaciones, de carreteras y otros. Ni siquiera sabemos a ciencia cierta cuantos conciudadanos fallecieron por causa del temporal. Según el doctor Fernando Abruña, nuestro entrevistado de hoy, muchos de los destrozos causados por María eran previsibles, pero por años las autoridades de la Isla han escogido ignorar las voces de aquellos que los han pronosticado (esto último lo añado yo). De igual modo, uno hubiera esperado que al momento de reconstruir se hiciera conforme a lo recomendado por los profesionales y científicos más distinguidos de Puerto Rico y del exterior. Pero ese tampoco ha sido el caso. Lo que hemos visto ha sido improvisación, falta de coordinación, desperdicio de recursos y hasta corrupción burda y cruda.   El magnate de los seguros W. Clement Stone, padre de la actitud mental positiva, decía que “cada adversidad trae consigo la semilla de un beneficio equivalente o mayor”. Claro está, provisto de que la abordemos con una actitud mental positiva y aprendamos de nuestros errores. Y he ahí el eje central del episodio de hoy: ¿qué aprendimos de María? ¿Qué hicimos mal en el pasado que tenemos la oportunidad de corregir ahora? ¿Qué estamos haciendo ahora para evitar que suframos destrozos similares a los de María cuando venga otro fenómeno similar o peor? Las marejadas sin precedentes de la semana pasada me recordaron la frase lapidaria del doctor Rafael Méndez Tejeda cuando lo entrevisté en el programa: “las tormentas del futuro van a ser más grandes y más frecuentes”. ¿Será María meramente una muestra de lo que nos espera en el futuro?   Para contestar todas esas interrogantes invité por sexta vez al programa al doctor Fernando Abruña, padre de la arquitectura sostenible en Puerto Rico y ex Director del Programa de Bachillerato de la Escuela de Arquitectura de la Universidad de Puerto Rico. Ángel Javier Jiménez, Ingeniero Hace como un año hablé sobre la manera en que el LED venía avanzando en el mercado. Para aquella ocasión, recuerdo que dije que a pesar de que los LEDs consumían mucha menos energía, y eran muchísimo más duraderos que sus contrapartes incandescentes o de neón, el único problema que le veía era el costo. De hecho, recuerdo que hasta bromeé que se los podíamos dejar en el testamento a nuestros hijos. Bueno pues, hay que ver como cambian las cosas en un año. Ahora resulta que los LEDs están dondequiera. Y lo que es mejor, los costos están bajando aceleradamente. Lo que es más, cada día se hace más difícil encontrar una bombilla incandescente, y las CFL —o compact fluorescente— están comenzando a desaparecer también. Nos estamos moviendo rápidamente a un mercado de LED casi exclusivamente. Pero, ¿qué es un LED? ¿Qué posibles ventajas tiene o deja de tener? ¿Cómo se compara con las bombillas incandescentes, de neón, de vapor de sodio, y las miles otras variaciones que existen en el mercado? ¿Qué aplicaciones tiene? ¿Para qué usos no es bueno? Fernando Abruña, FAIA Para contestar esas, y otras decenas de preguntas, entrevisté a dos verdaderos expertos. Juan Carlos Bauzá Bayrón En el programa #159 entrevistamos al doctor Fernando Abruña sobre el Cosecho de Agua De Lluvia.  Y a pesar de que el doctor Abruña ciertamente es un conocedor de estos temas, la conversación giró principalmente alrededor del diseño y construcción de estos sistemas y cómo podían proveer una fuente alterna de agua para muchas de las necesidades de un hogar o negocio. Pero, ¿qué pasaría si nos la quisiéramos beber?  Ya eso serían —como decimos en Puerto Rico— “otros veinte pesos”.  Y de eso hablamos en el programa de hoy, sobre cómo cosechar agua de lluvia, incluyendo cómo  recogerla correctamente, purificarla, almacenarla y usarla para el consumo humano. El término suena extraño porque para cosechar hay que sembrar primero.  Pero así le llaman tanto en español como en inglés: “cosecho de aguas de lluvia/rainwater harvesting”.  Y a tono con la serie de programas que he venido produciendo sobre maneras de enfrentar el cambio climático, reducir nuestra huella ecológica y aprovechar mejor los recursos que el planeta nos brinda, he decidido traer nuevamente al programa a uno de mis invitados más versados. Se trata del doctor Fernando Abruña, quien además de ser uno de los arquitectos más distinguidos de Puerto Rico, y un experto en el diseño de casas y edificios sostenibles e inteligentes, también es un experto en el cosecho de agua de lluvia. Y a pesar de que a primera vista parecería absurdo hablar del cosecho de agua de lluvia durante un periodo de sequía, como el que está sobrellevando Puerto Rico precisamente en este momento, la realidad es que el problema de la irregularidad en la precipitación es uno que llegó para quedarse con el cambio climático.  Así que prepararnos ahora nos servirá por décadas. ATENCIÓN: No te pierdas nuestro segundo programa sobre Cosecho De Agua De Lluvia. Según el doctor Abruña, de ahora en adelante el Caribe va a ver periodos mucho más largos de sequía seguidos de periodos más cortos e intensos de lluvia.  Y eso va a presentar grandes problemas para una sociedad que está a acostumbrada a colectar su agua de manera centralizada y distribuirla a todos los rincones del País.  De ahí que el doctor Abruña insista en que el mayor embalse que tiene Puerto Rico a su disposición es la superficie de techo de sus casas y edificios. Por último, este no es un problema que aqueja únicamente a Puerto Rico.  El abasto de agua debe preocupar a todos los ciudadanos del planeta porque junto con el cambio climático habiendo grandes cambios en el ciclo hidrológico.  Por eso te exhorto a que escuches este programa con mucho detenimiento independientemente de dónde residas. Doctor Fernando Abruña Esta semana nuevamente tenemos un programa poco común porque vamos a hablar de arquitectura y construcción.  Y muchos de ustedes se preguntarán: ¿y qué tiene que ver eso con tecnología?  Pues, como escucharán, tiene TODO que ver.  Hoy vamos a estar hablando de desarrollo sustentable y construcción de casas y edificios inteligentes. Y —como vamos a ver— para que una edificación sea inteligente se requiere mucho más que añadirle aditamentos tecnológicos a diestra y siniestra.  Antes de eso hay que pensar... y hay que diseñar.  De lo contrario vamos a terminar con edificaciones “torpes” repletas de tecnología. Y para hablarnos de estos temas invité a una de las personas más versadas que tiene Puerto Rico.  De hecho, probablemente la más versada.  Se trata del doctor Fernando Abruña, arquitecto de profesión, educador universitario y campeón del desarrollo sustentable de vocación.
