Send one way text to Rev Rachel Turning the attention to ourselves and our own healing is the greatest gift we can give to anyone who's recovering from addiction or other life challenges. When someone we love enters treatment, it's an opportunity to focus on our own Soul Recovery and allow them to fully embrace their own journey of recovery.• Understanding that our loved ones' readiness for treatment is an opening for our own healing• Recognizing that trying to control or fix others actually keeps us stuck in dysfunction• Learning to see others wholeness, not as their addiction or behaviors• Breaking the cycle of focusing entirely on others while neglecting our own well-being• Setting healthy boundaries that honor our healing while supporting others' recovery journeys• Practicing detachment with love—letting go while still holding care• Moving from empathy (taking on others' pain) to compassion (witnessing with love)• Developing unconditional love that doesn't enable destructive behaviors• Creating peace within ourselves regardless of others' choicesRemember that feelings are part of being human, and even intense pain will pass. In this raw and emotional solo episode, I open up about something deeply personal: my children's father is in the middle of a very public relapse—and I found out through social media. I share what it's like to co-parent with someone in active addiction, the rollercoaster of emotions I've been feeling (rage, sadness, betrayal, empathy—all of it), and how I'm navigating keeping my kids safe while honoring my own mental health. I also talk about how everything seemed normal—until suddenly, it wasn't—and what I've learned from Al-Anon, therapy, and years of recovery. This episode isn't about blame. It's about boundaries, truth, and choosing to let go of what I can't control. If you've ever loved someone in addiction, or you're co-parenting through it—I see you. You're not alone. It's been said that “life is a journey.” Oftentimes, we don't get much more context than that and it can be hard to know what to do with that statement. Where are we trying to go? What are we after? Is that a good thing or a bad thing?   Well, the journey is what we make it. For that one, you can quote Kenneth Watson. He delivers this week's warstory and it is a powerful one. You'll hear how it is we settled on this topic when you listen to where his life led him and how drugs and alcohol played an important role for a long time. With failed relationships, jobs that weren't what they were supposed to be, the military, and the death of his mother, all making up a part of his journey.    Today Kenneth is sober and able to recognize how each one of these things has placed him in a position to better serve those around him and just how much service plays a role in his recovery.    Thanks Kenneth for telling your story!   For more from Kenneth click the link! https://linktr.ee/12facesofsober Check out our sponsors. On this episode of The Karen Kenney Show, we explore the "Four M's" - those sneaky survival mechanisms that we sometimes picked up, while growing up, in our challenging family environments. Inspired by a Bill Burr interview I listened to, I share how we often develop coping strategies that might have kept us safe as kids, but totally mess with our adult relationships. I break down what the four M's are: Mothering (constantly trying to fix everyone else's problems for them), Managing (wanting to control everything and everyone around you), Manipulation (using subtle and not so subtle tactics to try to get what you want), and last but not least, Martyrdom (sacrificing yourself without being asked and then feeling resentful). Any of this sound familiar? Trust me, I've been there.

Jane grew up in a loving family even though both her parents were alcoholics, her dad recovering in Alcoholics Anonymous and her mum still actively drinking. Her parents split when she was around 6 years old, and her mum's bender-drinking quickly escalated. Jane and her sister took care of her mum for a few years until her father began to look after them again for two years.Jane grew up fast, felt ill at ease with her school life and started rebelling at home, began drinking and taking drugs. She moved out of home at 16 yo and her drinking increased, even though she didn't want to end up like her mum. After falling in with the wrong crowd, her drinking and drug taking progressed and after a particularly bad drinking--bender, when her mum called her an alcoholic, Jane realized that if it was that obvious then she needed help. Jane was familiar with AA from her dad's involvement and found recovery from alcohol and then drugs. Jane was also introduced to Alateen and eventually Al-Anon to help her cope with the trauma of growing up in an alcoholic family. If you would like to find out a bit more about alcoholism for yourself or a friend, then you can give Alcoholics Anonymous a call on 1300 222 222 or check out their website aa.org.au.If someone else's drinking is causing you a problem, then you can phone the Al-Anon Family Groups helpline on 1300 252 666 or go online at al-anon.org.au for more information. You can show your support to the Living Free show and keep us on air by:subscribing to 3CR https://www.3cr.org.au/subscribeand/or donating to 3CR https://www.3cr.org.au/donateMusic played in this episode was provided by the artists, via Australian Music Radio Airplay Project (amrap.org.au):@115:17 - Merri-May Gill: Round and Round (https://amrap.org.au/track/merri-may-gill-paris-moree-round-and-round)@38:31 - Merri-May Gill: Home Brew (https://amrap.org.au/track/merri-may-gill-paris-moree-home-brew)@55:26 - Merri-May Gill - Good Dog (https://amrap.org.au/track/merri-may-gill-paris-moree-good-dog)

Most of us found ourselves in the firm grip of addiction because we were seeking. Seeking comfort. Seeking relief. Something to take us away from the negative thoughts or feelings we have inside.    In sobriety, we have an opportunity to seek in a new way. We seek a power greater than ourselves or a new relationship to the person we thought we were. Whatever it is, its in the seeking that we find the power. By remaining in a seeking state, we maintain an open mind to the positive influences around us and our relationships become more vibrant and strong.    This week, were talking about seeking, a topic we got from the amazing warstory from Chad. Chad grew up with addiction all around him and it wasn't long before he found himself neck deep in waters of turmoil and despair. Matt Bair and Ryan Hedrick are back for another deep dive into the realities of addiction and recovery. Today, we’re tackling Suboxone—one of the most debated drugs in the recovery world. Some say it’s a lifesaver, giving people a real shot at staying off opioids. Others argue it’s just swapping one addiction for another, with its own set of side effects and risks. So what’s the truth? Does Suboxone truly help, or is it the disease in disguise? We’ll break it all down—the claims that Suboxone gets you high, the medical community’s stance, and the real-life impact it has on people in recovery. Plus, we’ll hear from Brandon Dreiman, a former Indianapolis firefighter and recovering addict, who brings his own experience to the table. This is a conversation you don’t want to miss. Send one way text to Rev Rachel After 32 years together, Rich and I open our hearts to share the profound transformation of our relationship—a journey shaped by Soul Recovery, parenting through addiction, and rediscovering true partnership. As we celebrate Rich's one-year sobriety anniversary, we reflect on the subtle yet powerful shifts that have deepened our connection, moving away from control and quick fixes to create a foundation of safety where vulnerability can thrive. Rich shares how learning to truly listen and express his needs has allowed us to heal individually while growing closer together, revealing the beautiful paradox that the more we focus on our own soul recovery, the stronger our relationship becomes. We also explore the wisdom gained from supporting our adult children, navigating family complexities, and facing life's challenges with presence instead of numbing. This conversation is a testament to the power of Soul Recovery—not just for individuals, but for partnerships—and offers hope, insight, and encouragement for anyone seeking deeper connection and healing in their relationships.Join Me for a Soul Recovery Experience in 2025!There is nothing more powerful than stepping into sacred space together—in person or virtually—to deepen your Soul Recovery journey.

She credits her recovery journey for the beautiful life she has today, and considers it a privilege to share her experience, strength and hope with others.  Today Melissa speaks to us on the topic of "Addiction is a Family Disease".Reco12 is all about exploring the common threads of addiction and sharing tools and hope from those on a similar path. Send one way text to Rev Rachel Is it too late to change? To heal? To detach with love? In this episode of Recover Your Soul, we explore the powerful Al-Anon principle of detachment through the lens of Soul Recovery, reminding you that it's never too late to step into a new way of being. Whether you've been on this journey for a while or are just beginning, detachment is a process of shifting old patterns, reclaiming your power, and finding peace within yourself—regardless of others' choices. If you've struggled with codependency and people-pleasing, this episode will help you release the need to fix, control, or take responsibility for others, so you can focus on your own healing. Together, we'll reflect on the Seven Detachments from Al-Anon: 1) Not to suffer because of the actions or reactions of others. 2) Not to allow ourselves to be used or abused. 3) Not to do for others what they can do for tRegister Today for Soul Recovery—In Person or Online!

Kelly Connelly, of our Vestavia community, tried to control (and cure) her husband's addiction to prescription painkillers. It seemed like a perfectly reasonable response from a wife. Only, it wasn't working—and life wasn't letting up.   The substance abuse continued, and infidelity and divorce entered the scene, making Kelly's life unmanageable for many years. But that was just it: her life was, actually, unmanageable. And admitting it made all the difference.   Kelly came to grips with her shame, perfectionism, and powerlessness through the help of a Bible-based Al-Anon group. She learned to live hope-filled and happy without “The Happy Ending.” When she began working on “me” and giving control over to the Lord, rich truths bloomed among very poor circumstances.   In the episode, you will learn:   –The Lord will redeem what the enemy has destroyed in your life.   –Shame snowballs and can cause you to feel alone. But you are never alone in Christ.   –When you come to God—and He wants you to—walls come down.   Links:   Listen to a similar story:    Give to StoryTellers Live in honor of Kelly.   Become a Patreon Insider to access bonus content~ including a Q & A from the room after Kelly shared her story.
