Creating art in the face of grief can be complicated and hard to navigate, especially when the grief feels both private and personal—and a part of a much larger epidemic, like the Missing and Murdered Indigenous People (MMIP) crisis. Both Bobby Brower (Iñupiaq) and Tara Trudell (Santee Sioux/Rarámuri/Mexican/Spanish) found their way into speaking about the MMIP crisis through clothing and adornment that are linked to a long history of protection, prayer, and collaboration. On this episode of Encounter Culture, Brower and Trudell talk with host Emily Withnall about creating Native Alaskan atikluks and creating beads out of paper, respectively, and the reason it is so important to do this work in community. Brower is a fashion designer whose work has been featured on the TV series Alaska Daily and in New York Fashion Week, among others. Trudell is a multi-media artist working in fabric, paper, photography, and film, among other mediums. For both women, the art cannot exist without community, and it is in community that important stories and information can be shared and held. In this final installment of his story, Harry Levant brings us up to date on the current fight for education and reform regarding the gambling industry's rapid ingestion and prolific supply. He uses a well-known understanding of nicotine addiction and the effectiveness of its second-hand smoke campaign to illustrate how pervasive gambling marketing is and how we must address the multiple elephants in the room if we wish, as a society, to support the millions in need of help. This episode was eye-opening for me, as I hope it is for you, on the outright false advertising prolific in national marketing, sports arenas, and more. Recently thanks to having these conversations where Harry opened my eyes to gambling advertisements, I saw my first gambling ad on Hulu while watching Alaska Daily. A political thriller, Native American social commentary, a newspaper drama and altogether progressive tour-de-force show that proves once again that network TV doesn't necessarily mean formulaic crappola! The Hilary Swank comeback is helped by Tom McCarthy's crew of reliable writers by blending in Aaron Sorkin level dialogue with Sidney Lumet-esque well-staged thrills that altogether crackles, sparkles and is ripe for after thought fueld discussion. 2022 was a strong year for features films, documentaries, shorts, and TV shows produced by Native filmmakers, relied on Native talent, or focused on Native issues. ABC's "Alaska Daily" takes on the serious real life inequities that lead to high rates of unsolved sexual assaults, disappearances, and deaths for Alaska Native women. And unsung gems like the documentary “Daughter of a Lost Bird” paints a poignant portrait of adoption and identity. Today on Native America Calling, Shawn Spruce looks back at some of the films and TV shows you may have seen and some you might have missed from the past year with Vincent Schilling (Akwesasne Mohawk), editor of NativeViewPoint.com and certified Rotten Tomatoes critic; Johnnie Jae (Oto-Missouria and Choctaw), founder of A Tribe Called Geek and co-founding member of the Fan Organizer Coalition; and Jason Asenap (Comanche and Muscogee), writer, critic, and filmmaker.
For this episode we're pivoting to TV, to talk about the new ABC drama "Alaska Daily." The show stars Hilary Swank as a journalist who takes a job at a newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska, after she is let go from her position at a national news outlet. It was inspired by the reporting of Anchorage Daily News reporter Kyle Hopkins. His series “Lawless,” which provides the basis for some of the show's storylines, won a Pulitzer Prize for Public Service in 2020. Lawless explores stories of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Alaska, the lack of police resources in many villages throughout the state, and much more. It was published in May of 2019 in collaboration with ProPublica. ATMI producer Madison Knutson spoke with Hopkins about his reporting being turned into a network drama. He talks about his role as an executive producer on the show, helping to capture Alaska authentically, and the responsibility of a journalist turning their work over to be fictionalized. They spoke on October 28th, 2022 just after the fourth episode of Alaska Daily aired. Hosted by Edison Wallace-Moyer. Music by Kendrick Whiteman and Devin Shreckengost. Alaska Teen Media Institute is based in Anchorage, Alaska. We would like to acknowledge the Dena'ina people, whose land we work on. We're doing something a little different for this show. We're switching over to television to talk about the new ABC drama series set in our very own state. “Alaska Daily” follows an investigative journalist who loses her job at a prestigious national news outlet who then takes a job working for a newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska. The show stars Oscar winner Hilary Swank as the journalist Eileen Fitzgerald. It was created by Tom McCarthy, who's script for the movie Spotlight also made him an Oscar winner. The show is inspired by the reporting of Anchorage Daily News reporter Kyle Hopkins. His series “Lawless” which provides the basis for some of the storylines on the show, won a Pulitzer Prize. In this episode, our ATMI producers got together on Zoom to talk about the first three episodes of the show. As with any movie or TV show that is set in Alaska, there can be a lot to get right and a lot to get wrong. Especially since the show was mostly filmed in Vancouver, Canada. Roundtable led by Madison Dooley. Hosted by Vega Nelson. Music by Kendrick Whiteman and Devin Shreckengost. Alaska Teen Media Institute is based in Anchorage, Alaska. We would like to acknowledge the Dena'ina people, whose land we work on. Many thanks to supporters of our podcast, including Alaska State Council on the Arts. ABC's latest drama, Alaska Daily, stars Hilary Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, an award-winning journalist whose career suffers a nearly fatal blow. Desperate to keep her career alive, she relocates to Anchorage, Alaska, to help a local outlet with a number of unresolved cases related to Missing and Murdered Indigenious Women (MMIW), a very real issue among the indigenious community across North America. Series star Grace Dove joins us on Multicultural TV Talk to talk about her role in the series as Rosalind "Roz" Friendly, a headstrong young journalist. "Roz" is assigned to open MMIW cold cases alongside Eileen, who has very different investigative tactics. As a result, the two women don't exactly see eye-to-eye. Grace talks about the importance of showcasing these storylines in mainstream media, how she relates to her character, and what it's like to work alongside one of her childhood heroes, actress Irene Bedard, who recurs on the series as Sylvia Nanmac, the mother of a recently deceased young Indigenous woman whose case is being reopened. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/mediavillage/message
Today, we begin the hour with another installment of Midday at the Movies, our monthly convo about films and filmmaking. We're pleased to have with us again movie mavens Ann Hornaday, film critic for the Washington Post, who joins us in Studio A, and Jed Dietz, the founder and former director (ret.) of the Maryland Film Festival and Parkway Theater. Jed is with us on Zoom. Today, we spotlight several new films, including Till, the powerful drama about the events surrounding the 1955 lynching of a 14 year-old Black youth in Mississippi that shocked the nation and ignited the American civil rights movement; and Armageddon Time, a scathing critique of American society. Both films are showing in local theaters only. Other films mentioned in the conversation today are Todd Field's Tar, a drama starring Cate Blanchett as a fictional female orchestra conductor undergoing an emotional crisis; director Nina Menkes' new documentary about sexism in film, Brainwashed: Sex-Camera-Power. which Ann Hornaday discusses in her recent piece in the Post; and Alaska Daily, a new ABC series streaming on Hulu about a journalist (Hillary Swank) who seeks a fresh start working for a newspaper in Anchorage, Alaska, that's investigating the disappearance of young Native American women, The series was created by Tom McCarthy, the Oscar-winning creator of “Spotlight.”See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

From the Academy Award-winning writer and director of Spotlight comes ABC's latest drama, Alaska Daily, starring Hilary Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, an award-winning journalist whose career suffers a nearly fatal blow. Desperate to keep her career alive, she relocates to Anchorage, Alaska to help a local outlet with a number of unresolved cases related to Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women (MMIW), a very real issue among the indigenous community across North America. Series star Grace Dove joins us on Multicultural TV Talk to talk about her role in the series as the headstrong young journalist Rosalind “Roz” Friendly who is assigned to open MMIW cold cases alongside Eileen and the two have different investigative tactics and don't exactly see eye-to-eye. Grace talks about the importance of showcasing these storylines in mainstream media, how she relates to her character, and working alongside one of her childhood heroes, actress Irene Bedard who recurs on the series as Sylvia Nanmac, the mother of a recently deceased young Indigenous woman whose case is being reopened. “This has been something that is very prevalent, sadly, in my life, my family and community,” she shared. “This isn't just in one area. It's just Alaska, or Northern British Columbia. This is across all of North America and Indigenous territories. We've been, unfortunately, living this our whole lives so, it's not shocking, it's not new or anything I haven't heard of. But to be able to showcase it on a network television show and be on the TVs of people who have never heard of this? It matters. It matters that non-Indigenous folks will have an opportunity to educate themselves and to show compassion.” “I really hope that audiences can take it upon themselves to be curious and to start educating themselves on the true history of the territories that they now live on.” Alaska Daily airs new episodes at 10pm ET on ABC and is available to stream on Hulu

Canadian journalist Danny MacEachern is back to take a look at the frustrating, but also maaaaybe promising, Alaska Daily, which spends a good half of its first episode giving us unnecessary backstory and throwing around phrases like "woke wussies" before finally getting into the real story. We discussed star Hilary Swank's wigs, why a network version of this show is never going to center the Indigenous people at the center of the mystery, whether we can expect the show to settle down and get better, and which other properties listeners should opt for instead. Sarah was Not A Crackpot about dangerous TV driving, and we went Around The Dial with The Real Love Boat, Reboot, a Werewolf By Night update from Dave, and a report on The Winchesters from foreign Supernatural correspondent Mlle. Caroline. Kitt (not the car) tried to get the egg of a Taskmaster episode through the hoop that is the Canon, and after we declared a Winner and Loser, we read TV books for filth in a non-regulation Game Time from Sarah. Borrow a sleep mask from a co-worker, because it's time for an all-new Extra Hot Great. GUESTS

Cameron Esposito (Moonshot, Mother's Day, A Million Little Things) comes by Bill's hotel room in Vancouver (in town shooting "Alaska Daily" with Hillary Swank premiering TONIGHT on ABC) to talk about discovering her sexuality in the strict crucible of Catholic high school and later Boston College. Cameron is a brilliant, authentic comic with a brilliant mind who calls Bill to task on his somewhat antiquated comedy, and enlightens Bill about how difficult it was to come out as a lesbian even in the mid-2000's. This is a fun and free-wheeling conversation that covers several subjects with something for everyone. ENJOY! --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/the-after-laugh/support
Ami Park is an Actor and Abundance Coach living in Los Angeles. In September 2019, with only $16 in her bank account, Ami had to return home to NJ when she received a call that her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer. As if that wasn't one hell of a "bathroom floor" moment, she was turned down for the lead role in a Netflix series that she had been on hold for. As if matters couldn't have been worse, her childhood dog went across the rainbow bridge. ALL IN ONE WEEK!This was Ami's turning point. This episode is about her comeback story of finding a deeper love for herself, empowering others to do so, and creating a life full of abundance and joy. Today, she's signed with one of the top film and TV agencies and just recently booked a role as a series regular on the upcoming ABC show, Alaska Daily, directed by Tom McCarthy (Oscar winning film Spotlight and Stillwater), and co-starring with Hilary Swank!@Ami_Park@awakenedjoycollective
