Can you imagine having over 40 embryos  transferred? OR flying to do daily blood testing and ultrasounds? The woman you're about to hear is one of the most passionate fertility advocates I know. Experiencing 7 transfers & multiple IUI's nearly 3 1/2 decades ago, while aLSP  enduring treatment both in the U.S. and in the Philippines, Sue Johnston's story is remarkable. You'll learn about the impact RESOLVE has  had in her life, “RESOLVE was my lifeline.” Many of us can relate to how much fertility treatments can suck the life out of us. I hope you're inspired by Sue's story. May we continue to navigate life's detours while holding onto grief and joy at the same time.Learn more about Sue below! Connect with her at the infertilityadvocate.com.Sue's Bio: My name is Sue Johnston and I met my husband, a U.S. Naval Officer in 1984. We were married on May 3,1986. My husband Bob and I struggled for nearly a decade to have our one and only child, who was born on May 1, 1994. The Navy didn't make infertility treatment any easier either. We moved 14 times in the first 12 years of our marriage and Bob was frequently deployed overseas... often for 6 months at a time. We even had a 2-1/2-year tour in the Philippines in the midst of our battle with infertility.Although I didn't choose to have infertility, I eventually turned my pain into purpose after learning how to embrace my resolution. I am passionate about supporting RESOLVE: The National Infertility Association because the people I met through this organization were my lifeline when I was in the thick of my infertility battle. Since then, I have worn almost every “volunteer hat” for RESOLVE. I have been actively involved in RESOLVE's FederalAdvocacy Day State for 10 years in many leadership roles. I am the co-Founder of the Detroit, MI Walk of Hope and have helped extend it to a statewide event. I lead local and national RESOLVE support groups both virtually and in person. In January of 2021, I started my Pregnancy and Parenting After Infertility Support Group (PAIGES). In 2022, I created a monthly PAIGES PLAYGROUP where moms and their miracle babies can get together to socialize with each other. One of my favorite past time activities is to create custom designed nursery paintings for all members of my general infertility support group who have made it to the other side of infertility. In addition, I am a leadership board member of the Michigan Fertility Alliance and helped to create the first ever Michigan Infertility Advocacy Day (MIAD) in September of 2021. In this special episode we are joined by Sylvain Magdinier, Senior Vice-President, Legal and Compliance, at Integreon, a leading Alternative Legal Services Provider (ALSP).  We explore how ALSP businesses developed, the types of work they do, the use of technology in the work, and the roles and career paths available – highlighting the skill-sets which can help you to succeed in these businesses.  In this episode, Sylvain summarises how ALSP businesses evolved, arising from deregulation in the England & Wales legal services market allowing different types of legal service provision, coupled with a client-led drive for greater efficiency and value delivery.  Sylvain talks about the wide range of services which ALSPs can offer, ranging from provision of expert staffing to projects where legal teams need to analyse or manage high volumes of documents for litigation or transactions, regulatory-driven reporting requirements, or consultancy services.  The episode also looks at the different career paths to gaining a role in an ASLP, including the route which Sylvain took via private practice law firms and in-house roles.  We explore the skills which will help you to progress in an ALSP, the possible career paths, and how technology is constantly evolving the ways in which these businesses are working with their clients (both law firms and in-house teams).  The discussion highlights too the importance of trying different roles to gain practical experience of how businesses like an ALSP can offer interesting and challenging pathways which are at the leading edge of how the legal sector is changing.  Actions and resources for listeners: ·        Check this webpage for the Chambers guide to ALSPs – read two of the articles and think what are three main trends you see in this part of the legal services market? ·        Look at two of the different services offered by Integreon as a ALSP: and for each of the two areas make a list of the skills you think will be important in providing that service. ·        Where do your skills match?  After reading this article, consider how your own skill-set and interests fit into a ALSP and the opportunities there.

Additionally, we touch upon the surprising early adoption of ALSPs by not only forward-thinking tech companies but also more traditional industries like insurance and utilities, drawn by the potential for cost savings. We also touch upon the critical role of legal ops in driving process changes and cultural buy-in for contracting processes, as well as the potential benefits of leveraging dedicated support from external legal ops professionals. We consider how to address concerns from staff who might fear for their job security during these evaluations, and the necessity of finding team members who are receptive to change. The conversation also covers the importance of appropriate messaging and understanding corporate culture to successfully implement new strategies. Axiom, a company that is one of the longest-running alternative legal services providers, this week stepped into the world of regulated legal services as it formally launched Axiom Advice & Counsel, an Arizona law firm. The move was enabled by the Arizona Supreme Court's decision last May to grant Axiom a license as an alternative business structure.  That follows from Arizona's historic decision in 2020 to become the first U.S. state to eliminate the ban on non-lawyer ownership of law firms – a development we've discussed several times on this podcast, including when our guest was Arizona Supreme Court Vice Chief Justice Ann A. Scott Timmer, who was not only among the justices who approved the changes, but who chaired the task force that recommended them. How will this new corporate-owned law firm differ from traditional firms? What types of clients will it serve and what should they expect? And what does this mean for the future of Axiom? Joining host Bob Ambrogi to discuss the launch of Axiom Advice & Counsel is Catherine Kemnitz, chief strategy and development officer at Axiom, as well as its chief legal officer.    Thank You To Our Sponsors This episode of LawNext is generously made possible by our sponsors. A litigator by training at Am Law 50 firms, she made the transition into legal services outsourcing when she founded LawScribe, one of the pioneer alternative legal service providers in the industry. She made the leap to founder in 2004—before the term ALSP was even born. Kunoor's move from Am Law 50 to founder is not unusual now, but it was unheard of 19 years ago. After selling the company to UnitedLex, she co-founded Elevate with entrepreneur Liam Brown. As a lesbian South Asian woman, Kunoor wanted to create a place where people can bring their authentic selves to work, and she fulfilled this vision by co-founding Elevate. For more than a decade, Elevate's legal, business, and technology professionals have offered practical ways for global law departments and law firms to improve efficiency, quality, and business outcomes. Additionally, she is a professor at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, focusing on innovation and transformation in legal services delivery. This is a “big ideas” episode, part of our goal to bring out “big ambitious ideas about the future" as well as day to day concerns about ALSPs and legal services.  Law professor Orly Lobel talks with host Mike Madison about her new book, The Equality Machine: Harnessing Digital Technology for a Brighter, More Inclusive Future, recently named one of the best books of 2022 by The Economist magazine.  In the conversation and in the book, she talks about how scepticism about AI and robots can get overblown. Are they always uncontrollable, incomprehensible, privacy-eating systems? She argues no: in proper measure they have the power to do enormous good in the world.  Much of the book draws its argument from beyond law, so in this episode she focused on the specifics of the legal world, especially when it comes to access to justice and dispute resolution systems. With this being the first survey of law firm partners since most firms have made some effort to return to the office, there were some surprises on how much remote work partners want to take versus how much their firms are offering. It may not be what you think. Women and minority partners made some strong gains according to this survey in narrowing the pay gap. While the gap is still significant between women/minority partners and their white male colleagues, this was the smallest percentage in the history of the survey which began in 2010. For the first time, the difference between average equity partner pay was more than $1 Million over average non-equity partner pay. Savitzky and Lowe unpack a lot of data from the survey for us. ONCE UPON A GENE - EPISODE 128 Sisters' Hope Foundation President and Founder Heidi Edwards on Recognizing ALSP Symptoms and the Importance of Genetic Testing Heidi Edwards, President and Founder of Sisters' Hope Foundation, has a family history of adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia (ALSP). She's on a mission through the work of Sisters' Hope Foundation to advocate and spread awareness for ALSP patients.  EPISODE HIGHLIGHTS Where did your ALSP journey begin? Twenty years ago, my aunt was the first to become sick with what we know now was ALSP. We've since had five family members pass away from the disease. I've lost two sisters and started Sisters' Hope Foundation to honor my sisters, my mom and her siblings, to raise awareness and educate people about ALSP and to connect people affected by the disease. My family now has two additional people who have been diagnosed with the CS1FR gene mutation. What is ALSP and what are the symptoms? ALSP is a rare, progressive neurological disease that causes changes to specific areas of the brain. Mutations occur in the CS1FR gene. It's an autosomal dominant genetic, which means a child of a parent with the gene has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene and contracting the illness. ALSP causes dementia and movement issues, and early onset symptoms include personality changes like depression, memory issues or seizures. As ALSP progresses, it causes movement issues, slow movement, difficulty walking, tremors or muscle stiffness. In early stages, it affects the left side of the body and the entire body with disease progression.  Can you tell us about ALSP Awareness Month? The month of March is ALSP Awareness Month, which is also my and my twin sister Holly's birthday month. Holly designated the entire month of March as our birthday month and we spent the time celebrating and having fun. March also signifies new beginnings with the start of Spring and joy of the longer days after the shorter, colder months. For all these reasons, I thought March was the perfect month for spreading ALSP awareness. This month we kicked off a campaign called Bridging the Gap in ALSP Awareness. We had four bridges lit up pink and purple in Massachusetts and we're contacting everyone in the neurology field to educate them and raise awareness of this rare disease that doesn't have a cure. The geneticist said: you are negative for the mutation and my husband and I just collapsed into each other's arms. -Heidi Edwards Imagine what it would be like if your family genetics harbored a deadly disease that began with symptoms like slowed movements, poor balance, memory impairment, speech changes, personality changes and then, dementia. Now imagine that 50% of your relative's genetic pool might contain this rare mutation for which there is no cure. That is exactly what happened to Heidi Edward's family. Hereditary diffuse leukoencephalopathy with spheroids or HDLS, now known as Adult-onset leukoencephalopathy with axonal spheroids and pigmented glia or ALSP was not an easy disease to research because it is so rare. It took medical scientists 13 years to properly identify the genetic mutation that existed in her family and by then, 4 of her closest relatives had. Says Heidi “we were walking on egg shells because we have such a large family and we wondered who would get the disease next. Heidi decided to be tested to see if she had the mutation and was relieved when geneticists told her she was negative. Today, her twin sister is in the end stages of the disease. As President and Founder of Sisters' Hope Foundation www.sistershopefoundation.com, Heidi is more determined than ever to raise awareness, education and support, not just for her family but for other families who have suffered quietly for so long. “I've been chosen to carry on this mission says Heidi. I'm the only sibling without the disease and I have to keep pushing forward.”
