When Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) first emerged on the national stage, it was hailed as a ray of hope. It was an intensive, interactive therapy that seemed to have positive results with kids on the autism spectrum, teaching them valuable skills while eliminating unwanted behaviors. It was expensive and time-consuming — so parents lobbied to have it covered by insurance or schools. By the 2010s, they'd largely achieved that goal, and ABA became a standard treatment for kids with autism. But over the past few years, that first generation of kids to receive intensive ABA has grown up — and they're telling a different story. Many have criticized ABA as harmful and even abusive, calling it “conversion therapy for autistic people.” On this episode, we explore the battle over ABA. We hear from a young man who received it as a kid, autistic self-advocates, experts, and parents — all of whom have a different perspective on ABA, its benefits, and whether or not the approach should be revamped or scrapped altogether. Also heard on this week's episode: STAT news reporter Tara Bannow joins us to discuss her investigative reporting on private equity firms that are backing the biggest chains in the country providing ABA, and how that has impacted the quality of services people are receiving.

The Umwelt evaluates a child's unique way of organizing and coping with objects and people in his/her immediate surroundings. In doing so, it provides information as to the relative emphasis the child places on things as opposed to people. It also assesses the extent to which the child is able to communicate with others about things in his/her immediate surroundings. Parents or caregivers are directly involved in the assessment and often contribute information which allows the examiner to gain access to the child's functioning. The Umwelt Assessment is concerned not only with the child's developmental level but -- equally important -- the kinds of interventions which lead to success on Umwelt tasks because these tasks reflect problem areas in everyday functioning.

Landria Seals Green's mother says, “A child's education is as good as the adult in front of them.” With that as her mantra, Landria became a medical-based SLP. For 20+ years, she's focused on AAC technology, and she's done a lot of AT work. At a Verbal Behavior workshop, she saw Dr. Vince Carbone present what she describes as speech therapy on steroids. She felt confident about her work as an SLP, but in order to become the best kind of therapist and to improve her marketability, she knew that she needed the BCBA certification. What really drew Landria to the dual certifications was the method of collecting data. Becoming a BCBA made her more finite in her methodology and gave her more tools to help her students. And as a therapist who is looking for any tool that will help her understand the child and see where they're at, Landria has loved the possibilities that have opened up for her students. Are we working with families to make sure that all of the funds and services they receive actually benefit the child? Landria sees the therapist's role as a bridge to the child's future. She listens to the family's dreams for the child because she has what you might call a “greeter” theory. Is everything that you're working on with the child only going to land them a job as a greeter at the store? And is that what the family wants for that child?I think you'll love this big picture approach to therapy that sees the child as a whole person rather than the small parts you might see in your weekly sessions. For more inspirational and fun-filled ideas about SLP and BCBA strategies, follow Landria on her social media channels as SLP Guru. What's Inside:Why Landria prefers to find features on an AAC that fits a student rather than trying to make an AAC work on the student.By focusing on the “rhythm of communication”, Landria teaches students how to respond appropriately to peers, teachers, and casual strangers.Helping students find authentic social connections is a challenge that Landria takes on with a unique out-of-the-box approach.

We explain sense-making ie., learning is the natural “outcome” of a circular process that we all travel through before arriving at understanding. Examples from day to day life as well as the movie “Rainman” are shared to help listeners apply concepts of Gestalt theory that directly align with the circular process of sense-making. There are times I feel stressed as a therapist because I want to get through all of the goals for my therapy session, so that's why I love Liz's playful approach to therapy. Liz Willis is an SLP who went back to school for her BCBA so that she could provide speech therapy and ABA services. Her dual degrees have made her feel more confident in the services that she provides, and you can really see how they inform how she structures her therapy sessions. It can be tempting to jump straight into the language piece of an IEP, but Liz suggests that you consider focusing on the social and play piece first. Every interaction begins with social engagement, and when therapists nail down the basics of engagement first, expanding into other skills can reap dividends.Liz is passionate about supporting teachers and providers, and she shares some of her favorite strategies including:How to use play centers to teach language skills. Her favorite assessments and why you should use more than one.How to encourage play in students who only like one kind of play.As an educator or service provider, there are going to be times when you just don't have the skills your students need. Liz says that you need to recognize when you don't know something and refer your clients out to someone else. There are so many pieces to the therapy puzzle, and collaborating makes your job easier. If you'd like to connect with Liz, you can reach her at her website, on Instagram, or at Liz@communicationandbehaviorsolutions.com.What's Inside:How early learners who have autism may play differently from their typically developing preschoolers, and why that matters.Does every moment need to be language enriched?Which comes first: engagement or play? Liz gives her thoughts on this chicken vs. egg dilemma.

In the early days of ABA, researchers in the field never dreamed that outside companies would take it over and overhaul it in ways that would harm its reputation.
Questions about qualifications have long been an issue for the field. In the 1970s, experts realized they needed uniform standards and a way to certify that therapists are qualified, says Gina Green, chief executive officer of the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts in San Diego, California.
The roots of ABA date back to the 1930s and the work of psychologist B.F. Skinner, who focused on concepts such as conditioning, reinforcement and responses to stimuli to explain human behavior.
When Terra Vance took a course to become a registered behavior technician in 2015, she was trying to transition from a career as a teacher to one as a psychologist.
Rapid growth and inadequate standards in the ‘applied behavior analysis' industry may put vulnerable children in the hands of poorly prepared technicians.
Therapy for autism is increasingly difficult when schools are closed, and some providers are doing their treatments using video technology. What types of behavioral therapy is needed and how can this be adapted during Coronavirus? We'll hear about how flexibility and creativity are the keys to success.

The Miller Method is a system-based approach that addresses children's developmental requirements as an autism therapy. It was discovered by Dr. Arnold Miller. He used a cognitive-developmental Systems Approach and used a two-pronged plan(data source). The first plan involves transforming children's abnormal systems into functional behaviors. Meanwhile, the second strategy includes introducing developmental activities into a systematic and repetitive way using objects and people to fill developmental gaps.Especially, the Miller Method uses high board systems to increase a child's body awareness. This eventually helps them become more aware of themselves and their surroundings. GOALS OF THE MILLER METHODMiller Method has four primary goals:Assesses the adaptive significance of the children's behavior.Attempts to transform the behavior into a functional activity.Tries to expand and guide the children from closed ways into social and communicative exchanges·Guides professionals and parents in systems to follow and facilitate children affected with Autism spectrum disorder.for more information https://thehouseofkidsdevelopment.ca/our-services/autism-spectrum-disorder/

She has published several books on autism, including An Early Start for Your Child with Autism, A Parent's Guide to High-Functioning Autism, and What Science Tells Us about Autism Spectrum Disorder. Dawson's pioneering studies were among the first to describe the emergence of autism symptoms during infancy, leading to new screening tools. Dawson co-created the Early Start Denver Model, an early autism intervention shown to improve behavioral outcomes, which has been translated into 17 languages and is used worldwide. Her work showed for the first time that early intervention can normalize aspects of brain activity in children with autism, changing the field's view of brain plasticity in autism, a finding recognized by TIME Magazine as one of the top 10 medical breakthroughs of 2012. A strong advocate for persons with autism, Dawson has testified a number of times before the US Congress in support of major autism legislation and was appointed by the U.S. Secretary for Health and Human Services for two terms to the DHHS IACC.
