He is destined to be high priest—but at what cost to those he loves? In ancient Samaria, Aban anticipates his rites of passage with excitement and dread. He yearns to join the priesthood of Ba'al Melqart, unlock the power of the rain god, and hear the deity's voice. He's been warned the licentious ceremony can take a dangerous turn, but as eldest son of the high priestess, he holds a privileged position. If he can make it through the ceremony, one day he'll rise to high priest. On the eve of the rituals, Aban's mother confesses a dark secret about the bloody sacrifice demanded by Melqart. Aban may have escaped the flames, but if he is to save his brother, Aban must take his destined position of power as soon as possible. When the mysterious prophet Elijah interrupts the rites, overturns the idol, and curses the land with drought, Aban's world is shaken. The current high priest and the king appear powerless, but even more confusing is the fact that the rain god does nothing. Against his better judgment, Aban conceals the strange prophet's whereabouts, forfeiting the high priesthood. Now an enemy of the relentless Queen Jezebel, Aban has little time to question his fading commitment to Ba'al Melqart as he and his loved ones flee. But the conflict in Samaria is much larger than just a high priestess and her sons. Soon, Aban will have to choose a side in Yahweh's war against the Ba'als—and it may cost him his life. Of all the books that would drag me back into Biblical Fiction, one about the cities of refuge in the Old Testament written by Connilyn Cossette seems unlikely. But it was, and now she has a new series that looks into four cousins who run off to fight with King Saul!  Um... WHAT?  I don't know about you, but I'm excited to check out this series, starting with Voice of the Ancient. Listen in to learn why! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. Will You Forgive Me if I Call This Series One of Biblical Proportions? Sorry. Couldn't resist. But seriously, one of the best things about talking to authors like Connilyn Cossette is listening to their deep love for the Word of God and their deep desire to spark something in readers that turns His people (or those seeking Him) to that Word to learn, grow, be encouraged, be convicted, be fed by Him. Connilyn was no different.  And... she writes my favorite kind of Biblical fiction. She writes about places and people who might have known Biblical characters. Her stories give context and culture to a Biblical world that doesn't always make sense to us. And she does it while remaining faithful to historical and Biblical truth. Authors who write like this make it easier for readers to separate fiction from straight-up Scripture. It's harder to get things muddled in your head when it isn't strictly a retelling.  And, the more Biblical fiction like this that I read, the easier it is not to be muddled with stories about well-known Biblical characters. If you're new to Connilyn Cossette, she recommends starting with her first book Counted with the Stars because her stories and characters are interwoven, so you'll get a richer reading experience that way but... Each book also stands on its own. Voice of the Ancient by Connilyn Cossette As the eldest son of a Levite and a Philistine, Avidan is torn between his duty to his family legacy and the desire for something more. After an enemy attack strikes close to home, he takes the opportunity to fight with his cousins for the newly crowned King Saul. But when one of the cousins goes missing during the battle, Avidan refuses to leave him behind. Keziah is the daughter of one of the most powerful clan chiefs in the territory of Manasseh. On the brink of a forced marriage to a loathsome man decades older than her, she has no choice but to run, hoping to find sanctuary with her mother's family. United during their journeys and battling to survive the dangers that surround them, Avidan and Keziah make a pact to travel together. As challenges pile up, they must not only rely on each other to stay alive but also learn to trust the true and eternal King of Israel to guide their every step. Terry Garner joined me tonight to chat about his fascinating Biblical Fiction series, Magi Journey. Starting way back in Assyria, through Babylon, and into Persia, the series chronicles two timelines--first that of the Israelite kings, and then of a fascinating family back in Persia... Listen in to see the hope this Magi family found in Scripture and how it led them to Bethlehem.  Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. This isn't just another "traveling to Bethlehem with gold" story of the Magi. No, Terry Garner links the Israelite kings from Ahaz through the destruction of the temple and into captivity with a family who discovers that God has promised redemption for those outside Israel as well. Follow a physical and a faith journey across the ages all the way to the hope of an age. With extensive and meticulous research, Terry Garner looks at Scripture and compares it with historical secular accounts. Even more exciting, however, are the things he discovered along the way. He talks about Jewish historians discounting Scriptural accounts of historical events to explain away the supernatural as if God Almighty... isn't! And then, Terry explains how he's also writing a nonfiction book to help readers pull all the pieces from Scripture and see what God has promised us... so that we may know His plans. I'm excited about that book, but I confess, learning he's working on a spinoff of the Magi series excited me even more. EEEP! Terry Garner has all his books on sale right now! The paperbacks are on sale for 9.95 and the box set (also available on Kindle Unlimited) is on sale for 4.99! Magi Journey by Terry Garner A sweeping historical saga from the courts of Tiglath-Piliser III in Assyria to the sleepy town of Bethlehem. History is seen through the eyes of the Magi as they journey from 734 BC to -0- AD. Explore with the Magi the prophecies of Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Daniel. Witness God's judgment on Israel, Assyria, and Babylon. And rejoice in the redemption of Israel and the coming of the Messiah. Join the Magi as they answer the question that is critical to every man and woman, "Who Is This Messiah?" Learn more about Terry on his WEBSITE. Remember 2020?  No not for that reason. I'm talking to Christian fiction readers here.  You couldn't blink without seeing a cover--one specific cover--and hearing people rave about the book. Rain by Dana McNeely. Yeah, I was one of those people, and I kept ignoring it. Why? Because I'm an idiot, that's why. Well, and because I thought it was about Noah, and I just didn't want to read Noah. Well, I was an idiot. Wait, we've established that. Forget Noah! Dana McNeely's Rain is all about Elijah and his attack on the prophets of Baal. So to speak. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. If You Loved Rain, Whirlwind Might Blow It Out of the Water Dana McNeely's story of how she started writing, gave up writing, and then God rained literary blessings down on her (and her readers!) is nothing short of beautiful. She talks about the critique group member who listened to section after section until one asked to have a Bible study with her because she thought she was "becoming a Christian."  I LOVED that. From her writing and publishing story to the books she loves to read and even her take on not finishing books if they aren't your thing, Dana was a delight to chat with. Her love of God, His Word, and story shines through the interview, and I for one am anxious to read the book that started it all... Rain so I'll be ready in time to read her second book, Whirlwind. Whirlwind by Dana McNeely  A king's downfall and a love that transcends war Spurned by potential suitors, Miriam travels to Jezreel to care for her cousin's son. There, the precocious seven-year-old works his way into her heart. When Arameans swarm the land like locusts, Miriam focuses on the safety of her young ward but promises adventures beyond the city walls when the war ends. Gershon, a quiet and kind vintner, is happily building a life for his wife, son, and aging parents. But when his wife dies during childbirth and war looms on the horizon, he must make a decision—will he take a new wife before his heart can mend? Meanwhile, Dov, a young officer crosses paths with the “bird girl” he remembers from the past. That she is a beautiful woman matters not, as he is a career soldier. Unexpectedly charged with leading Ahab's army against the Arameans, Dov anticipates death and defeat in Samaria, but when a prophet pledges victory, Dov vows to fight to the end. When an unlikely victory brings freedom, a bright future seems imminent. Then one afternoon Miriam witnesses a tragedy and must flee with the boy to keep them both safe. One of the hardest things (I would imagine) for Biblical Fiction authors has to be finding a fresh look at a topic people know really well without changing the facts of Scripture or presuming too much on it. Well, authors like Elizabeth Jacobson are particularly good at giving us another way of looking at potential motivations for actions, and that can totally change how we view things. And well, that just makes for good storytelling. Listen in while Elizabeth tells why she chose to portray Joseph the way he did and what obstacles she saw as especially pertinent to his story. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. We Love to Read about Great People Overcoming Terrible Circumstances And Joseph certainly fits that bill. Everyone loves a story where the underdog saves the day, and while he was a strong guy, you can't deny that Joseph definitely had his underdog moments.  Just listening to Elizabeth Jacobson talking about that moment after he's been made second in command over all of Egypt was enough for me to want to send a care package through time. I doubt Joseph would have appreciated the melted chocolate and can of Coke.  Maybe popcorn.  Or would he think that was supposed to go in his funeral jars?  Hmmm... Anyway, Not only does Elizabeth Jacobson love the Word and the stories in it, she also loves spec-fic and talked just enough about her current project to make me anxious to read it. Oh, and remember how we said her hardback was on sale? It still is!  In fact, it's almost HALF the cost of the paperback, so don't miss out on it!  I got mine in the mail a couple or three weeks back and it's beautiful. I have it between Jubilee Lipsey's My Brother the King and Nadine Brandes' Fawkes. I think Elizabeth would approve! Not by Sight: A Novel of the Patriarchs  by Elizabeth Jacobson Beloved. Betrayed. Despised. Exalted. What could make a man turn to God when every event in his life screams that God has turned his back on him? Joseph, the eleventh son of the patriarch Jacob, had his father's favor, and that was his downfall. Sold into Egypt by his enraged and jealous brothers, Joseph is left with nothing to cling to except the stories of his father's God, a seemingly remote and unreachable figure. Faith may prove futile, but Joseph is desperate – for the very hate that enslaved his brothers has begun to overtake him. You can learn more about Elizabeth Jacobson on her WEBSITE. Biblical fiction can be a sticky wicket, but one beautiful thing it has going is providing cultural context to familiar stories. It can also offer reasons that people may have acted as they did. Its very strength in making us familiar with things its original audience already understood can also be a means to blurring the lines between fact and fiction. Great authors know how to throw a "what if" scenario into the mix and leave us digging deeper into Scripture to understand what the Lord is teaching us in His Word, and isn't that the main point? Listen in as Mesu Andrews and I tackle my issues with Biblical fiction and see why it is such an important genre in Christian fiction. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What Happens When a Woman's Passion for the Word Meets Her Love of Story? I've always been honest about my concerns with Biblical fiction, but as I chatted with Mesu (we didn't have time to discuss it), I realized it really is the same issue as with all Christian fiction--allowing creativity and recognizing the ways different people understand the same passages while holding fast to Biblical truth. In Biblical fiction, it's more overt. If an author tries to say that David was a twelve-year-old girl, we're going to have problems. If another book shows the possibility of Paul having been married as M.D. House talked about in Episode 133, well that's something we don't actually know. How that's done makes all the difference. Mesu Andrews has a deep love and passion for the Word that shines whenever you talk to her, and this interview was no exception. She lets us peek into her writing process that starts pretty generically (Hello, Google!) before digging deep into more academic sources. She made it very clear that every Biblical fact mentioned in the Bible never changes in her stories. However, she does look at cultural and traditional aspects of life at the time and asks those wonderful "what if?" questions. Why write about someone like Potiphar's wife? Because women often prefer reading about women, Mesu looks at familiar stories like that of Joseph and Potiphar's wife from an unfamiliar angle. Of course, you can read all the spoilers by going straight to the Bible, but I have to admit that I'm fascinated to see where this book takes us. Finally, we discussed a few authors and the kinds of Biblical fiction they write. From concepts to deep dives, Old Testament to New, these authors have carved out niches for themselves. I know you'll find something you need to check out. Me, I'm going to be reading Potiphar's Wife soon and seeing what Mesu Andrews has for us. Potiphar's Wife by Mesu Andrews One of the Bible's most notorious women longs for a love she cannot have in this captivating novel from the award-winning author of Isaiah's Legacy. “Mesu Andrews yet again proves her mastery of weaving a rich and powerful biblical story!”—Roseanna M. White, author of A Portrait of Loyalty Before she is Potiphar's wife, Zuleika is the daughter of a king and the wife of a prince. She rules the isle of Crete alongside her mother in the absence of their seafaring husbands. But when tragedy nearly destroys Crete, Zuleika must sacrifice her future to save the Minoan people she loves. Zuleika's father believes his robust trade with Egypt will ensure Pharaoh's obligation to marry his daughter, including a bride price hefty enough to save Crete. But Pharaoh refuses and gives her instead to Potiphar, the captain of his bodyguards: a crusty bachelor twice her age, who would rather have a new horse than a Minoan wife. Abandoned by her father, rejected by Pharaoh, and humiliated by Potiphar's indifference, Zuleika yearns for the homeland she adores. In the political hotbed of Egypt's foreign dynasty, her obsession to return to Crete spirals into deception. When she betrays Joseph—her Hebrew servant with the face and body of the gods—she discovers only one love is worth risking everything. You can find out more about Mesu Andrews on her WEBSITE. When I learned that Jubilee Lipsey started her Biblical fiction series by writing a Bible study of David & Jonathan, I knew this would be an author right up my alley!  Listen in to learn why she chose to debut with that particular story, what she learned from it, and what to expect from her next! Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. What about 2020 Prompted Authors to Write about This Great Friendship? Jubilee Lipsey is the second (although, I think it's actually the third) author that I've spoken to who found themselves writing about David and Jonathan during 2020.  Lockdown hit and of all the Bible stories that could be fictionalized, they chose this classic friendship.  The first you can read about HERE. But as I mentioned already, the most fascinating bit of this story is not that she chose to spend lockdown writing her first novel. She went on to rapid-release the next two in the series ensuring that the entire series was available quickly.  Not only that, but she's done this very well. The books are available in paperback, on kindle, and in hardback (I got my hardback at a GREAT price, so you should definitely check that out). Why did the Lord press David and Jonathan onto the hearts of His people?  What can we learn from that?  I don't know, but I definitely want to read this book (it's beckoning from my shelf!) to find out. My Brother the King by Jubilee Lipsey Still reeling from his father's break with the God of Israel, Prince Jonathan is in line to inherit a throne that has already been stripped from his family. The young shepherd David is the man after God's own heart, chosen to take Jonathan's place. Carrying a secret anointing that won't stay hidden, David yearns to fight alongside his childhood hero rather than against him, but his calling threatens both their lives at every turn. Instead of fighting to the death over a crown that can't belong to both of them, the two young warriors forsake rivalry and pledge themselves to a friendship forged in the passionate pursuit of the God who called them—both. Walk alongside two Biblical heroes as they embrace the will of God through a selfless covenant that would withstand the brutal tests of family jealousy and war—a friendship that would change history. But she saw theology as a battlefield and Scripture as a weapon. In her confusion, she rejected God and His Word but was rescued by an old high school friend, who discovered and shared Jesus with her.Life changed rapidly indeed. A month later, that friend asked her to be his wife. She and Roy were married six months later. Nine months and two weeks later, their first daughter was born. Soon after, their second daughter came along, and they began attending a small church. Suddenly, her desire for God's Word exploded. So she began scouring the only theology books a young mother has time to read—children's Bible stories and my Bible. She devoured God's Word during my days as a full-time mom, but when her family moved to seminary, her husband became Mr. Mom, and she went to work.  When her husband graduated from seminary and received his first call to ministry, she promised the Lord she would forever cherish His Word and never again take for granted the blessings of motherhood and marriage.Their daughters are now grown and telling their own stories of journeys with Jesus. No doubt, they had joys and sorrows in a pastor's family, their mom's speaking ministry slowed by chronic illness and their personal questions for the Creator. It is her prayer, however, that those children's Bible stories they used to read together have matured into the biblical novels and devotional studies she now writes. In a way, she still tells Bible stories to her girls. They just include a host of other folks who enjoy relating to the real people in God's Word.Visit Mesu Andrew's website.Became a Patron of Christian Historical Fiction Talk.

Determined to keep the youth of his church grounded in the Word during lockdown, author Erik Steidl found a little-remembered character in the Old Testament--Jonathan's arrow boy.  Retelling that story through the perspective of this character gives kids someone to relate to while infusing the truths of that story into their lives. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. This Author Strives to Make Scripture Come Alive for Kids When Erik Steidl talked about writing his book, blog post by blog post, to keep the youth of his church in the Word during the distance created by lockdown, I knew I liked him. There's nothing more important than Biblical literacy, and making Biblical cultures come alive so our young people can understand the context of Scripture is a great way to ensure they learn to appreciate the stories that we sometimes take for granted. I love that Steidl used an almost unknown character--just someone mentioned in passing-- to bring the story of David and Jonathan alive. That is my favorite way to see Biblical fiction. There's little concern that your understanding of the actual Bible will blend with the story until you can't differentiate between them. His other series, the Philippi series, features people who have always fascinated me, and I'm sure he's at least on chapter twelve by now... right?  *Whistles* The other thing that impressed me was Erik Steidl's laser focus on retelling Biblical stories for youth. Ayal the Arrow Boy by Erik Steidl Ayal the Arrow Boy tells the story of David and Jonathan from a never-before-seen perspective; that of Ayal, a servant in King Saul's palace. Ayal finally has his life going in the right direction. After growing up an orphan on the streets of Jerusalem, he finally has a home in the palace and a good job as a runner for Prince Jonathan. Everything changes when he overhears two men planning to kill David, a commander in King Saul's army and Jonathan's best friend. You know I love a good project and a good plan. But sometimes, we get caught up in checking off the tasks and lose sight of what God is trying to do. In Episode 56 of Just One Simple Thing, we'll learn to find God's purpose in our plans.Welcome, friends! I'm so glad to have you hanging out with me today as we talk about two of my favorite things ... projects and plans. In his book, Getting Things Done, David Allen defines a project as anything that takes more than one action to complete. So almost EVERYTHING is a project! Which makes my project manager heart so happy.Over the next few episodes, we'll talk about some tips and tools you can use to complete your projects. But before we do, let's talk about why it's so important to complete our projects well. Friend, God has a profound purpose for yourvery practical projects.Sometimes, he shows you that purpose before your start. Sometimes, you discover it along the way. And other times, you don't really understand what he is up to until long after the project is complete.God gave Noah a big project ... build an ark and repopulate the earth.God said to Noah, “I will establish my covenant with you, and you will enter the ark—you and your sons and your wife and your sons' wives with you.” Gen 6:18. For Noah, it was all about saving his family.Nehemiah thought God was sending him to rebuild a wall. But when he got there, Nehemiah found not only a broken wall, but a broken people. So as he was leading them to rebuild the wall, he was also leading them to rebuild their confidence and their identity as God's chosen people. And being the great leader that he was, Nehemiah was able to steward both parts of his projects well.Joseph had a big project ... save Egypt from a famine.Says in Gen. 41that he stored up so much grain, he stopped even trying to keep up with how much he had. Not only did he have enough grain to save Egypt from the famine, but he had enough for the surrounding countries as well. What if Joseph had only completed his project halfway? His brothers would not have come to Egypt to get grain, and they may never have reunited. Because Joseph executed his practical project well, God was able to complete his profound purpose. So as we get wrapped up in our projects, checking the boxes and closing out the Trello boards, let's keep our hearts and minds open to God's profound purpose. Even the smallest, most mundane two-step projects can be used in ways we can't imagine. So let's do them well.ACTION STEP:Look at the projects you have on your plate. Can you see God's profound purpose in them? Watch for the Lord to start revealing more about His purpose as you cross things off the list. Be sure to join me in the next episode when I'll share some tips for breaking your projects down into small steps so you can make a plan to get them done. You'll learn the process and the tools I use for all of my projects. You know that when a reader who is "meh" or even "NO THANK YOU" about Biblical fiction has an author who is an "instabuy," there might be something to this gal's writing! Naomi Craig has written a fascinating and hard-hitting (or maybe it's just me and my issues) novel about faith, hope, and putting our trust in the Lord instead of our works. Note: links may be affiliate links that provide me with a small commission at no extra expense to you. How an Enemy Prostitute Changed the Course of History (sorta) I say "sorta" because while Rahab's assistance allowed the spies to get out of Jericho and set in motion the chain of events that led to her being a great, great x however many grandmother of Jesus, we all know that ultimately, God set this in motion. So yes... and no. I don't even think Naomi Craig and I talked about it, but when I was editing the episode and reconsidering so much of what is in this book, I realized that there are so many contemporary Christian parallels in this story.  How often do Christians kind of wince when the new convert comes in not looking "churchy" enough?  Maybe they're the only person in town with lots of tattoos instead of the "tasteful one" that some might forgive... maybe.  Perhaps it's the addiction to some substance or another... the terrible parenting.  The words that fly out of their mouths before they realize they'd even thought it (habits, folks. They're a thing.)  Yeah.  That last one hurt me. Yikes! The fact is, this book steeped in Biblical history, tradition, and culture spoke to me about contemporary issues just as much if not more than the Biblical ones.  In the end, I was left wondering why we think our lives are so very different.  We may have gas stoves and indoor plumbing. We may not have to worry about Philistines attacking, or don't we?  Maybe our Philistines are on social media, doing their best to divide the church and conquer.  It's a thought. In this episode you'll find: Why Naomi Craig chose to focus on Biblical fiction Which book/Biblical person was her first What is coming next And if she's in the pro or against camp on capes. (Personally, I'm with Edna Mode). Rahab's Courage by Naomi Craig A scarlet cord tethers one ruined woman to the salvation of mankind. Harboring two fugitives in a city slated for destruction, Rahab has one small chance of escape. In exchange for their safety, she bargains for her own. Their agreement rewards her courage, and she flees Jericho and a life of prostitution for a new life among the people of Israel. Never again will she have to depend on anyone—especially men. Except Salmah won't take the hint. High ranking soldier and leader of the tribe of Judah, Salmah is determined not to repeat his parents' mistakes. He will keep the Lord's commandments. Rahab's growing faith fits right in with phase one of his plans: find a wife who loves the Lord and settle down in the new land. Rahab finds shelter and meaning in the Lord's ways until her past comes back to haunt her. As her new faith is put to test, she finds herself alone. Isn't that what she'd always wanted? With her courage waning, only the Lord can turn Rahab's life around again, but will He do it before she loses everyone and everything that really matters to her—to her heart? The one with her nose in books all the time. The one with a stack of library books up to her chin. The one who got caught reading under her desk in school (usually during math class). Among all those lovely books that 'addled my brain' as a young girl, the ones that became my best friends were the historical novels—the ones whose rich details and long-ago adventures took me to Regency England, Ancient Israel, the Civil War Era South, hidden rooms in WWII Amsterdam, Colonial America and into the Wild West. It was these stories that brought history to life in a way that schoolbooks never could, and fueled a desire to imagine myself in these times and places that would eventually spill over into my own writing.  “If history were taught in the form of stories, it would never be forgotten.” -Rudyard KiplingAnd on top of being a voracious reader, I was a reader with a secret desire to someday see my own book on those library shelves—a secret desire of my heart that, for a long time, I honestly did not give God enough credit to grant me. I kept that secret desire so close to my chest that even those closest to me had no idea that I had been writing a manuscript for years! But God is bigger than my lack of faith. When I finally took a chance and put that first manuscript out there in the world, I semi-finalled in the ACFW Genesis contest, won the My Book Therapy Frasier Award, signed with Tamela Hancock Murray of the Steve Laube Agency and within only a few months I'd signed on with my dream house, Bethany House Publishers.  Since my first book was published in 2016 my books have appeared on numerous bestseller lists, have won both Christy and Carol Awards and have sold thousands of copies all over the world in several languages.  And none of it would have ever happened without those first knee-shaking steps of faith and a God whose faithfulness and goodness far outweighs my doubts and insecurities. Above all that God has done with my writing career and regardless of where He may lead me in the future, my passion is to write stories that draw readers into an immersive experience within the rich ancient world of the Bible, to personalize the history found there, and to spark a curiosity that will lead to digging deeper into the truth of the Word.Visit Connilyn Cossette's website.

Today I had the pleasure of meeting and speaking with Author David Anderson. David's book titled DARK NIGHT OF THE SOUL is the story of coping with clinical depression. As David put it "I had been living with a depressed brain my whole life and didn't know it." David hopes that him sharing his story will help others. You can learn more about David and purchase his book at https://davidandersontheauthor.com/books/. I'm happy that David has decided to share his story with and be the newest member to the ever growing book club. With authors as good as this, why aren't you listening? David Anderson is a freelance writer and a Bible Geek. His two favorite subjects for writing are Biblical Commentary and Biblical Fiction. He even got a Masters of Theological Studies and a Masters of Theology degree just so he would have the opportunity to read and translate from the Hebrew and Greek texts. Doing this took his imagination places it never would have gone otherwise, which for writing is very important. He is a member of the Foothills Writers Guild. He is the winner of the Juanita Garrison Prize for Unpublished Fiction. He would like to see Biblical Fiction recognized as a separate category from Christian Fiction. Christian Fiction should be seen as a subgenre of Biblical Fiction. Examples of Biblical Fiction that are not Christian Fiction would include Anita Diamant's The Red Tent and Ron Hansen's Atticus. Anderson might read and write Christian Fiction, but focuses more on Biblical Fiction. --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bright-headed-publishing/message

A god asked Puah to kill. That went against her faith. Her own God asked her to walk away. That went against her calling. Until she is ordered by Pharaoh to kill newborn Hebrew males, Puah thought she had an easy profession. If she obeys, it means the deaths of untold innocents. If she doesn't, it means her death. As Pharaohs rise and fall, Puah’s people are forced into deeper oppression. Men are forced labor and women are sent to serve their Egyptian counterparts. Only Puah and her recently acquired guild are free. For now. Moses, one of the hidden babies who was adopted by the Princess, is being groomed to take over. When he denies his right to rule and mistakenly kills an Egyptian, he is forced to flee into the desert. Forty years later, he returns as the instrument of God. With her medical training and passion for helping pregnant women, Puah places herself in the heart of hell on earth as the intensity of plagues increases. After the last plague falls, she must make the decision to stay in Egypt or face the unknown wilderness. Puah’s heart has always been for the women of Egypt. How can she obey God to walk away from them in their greatest hour of need? She can only make the choice once and morning won’t wait. Everyone is talking about Joe Biden's new VP candidate, Kamala Harris. The media has painted her as a revolutionary moderate - but did you know that Kamala actually supports a ban on fracking? Not only would this hurt hundreds of thousands of hard working Americans, it's also not backed by science. We explain Kamala's anti-fracking position and how some in the media are trying to paint those who mispronounce Kamala (Comma-lah) as racist! Also on this week's episode we're joined by our brilliantly talented friend Brian Godawa! Brian is a biblical science fiction writer and he is incredibly talented. He's a former Hollywood screenwriter and he explains what it's like to be a Christian conservative in “the industry” and how he's carved out his own popular niche. His recent book Jezebel: Harlot Queen of Israel is an example of “biblical fiction,” a literary genre that takes on biblical tales and “fills in the gaps” in the original story while still staying true to the original message. Last week, we encouraged you to read the book American Dirt by Jeanine Cummins, whose author was recently “cancelled” because a critical review from one leftist blog led to a mob onslaught. Not even Oprah Winfrey's blessing could stop the barrage of hate tweets Cummins faced earlier this year. In fact it seemed to encourage it! The onslaught was so bad, she admitted that she's unlikely to write another book . . . and Cummins is a liberal! We give you the full rundown on this interesting new example of cancel culture. Ann rounds out the episode sharing a delicious recipe for Eggplant Parmesan, or Parmigiana Di Melanzane, as the Italians call it. We also take time to share some of the recent reviews and comments we've received on the podcast. We're grateful for every single one. Keep them coming! This week’s episode is with the fantastic Jill Eileen Smith. Jill has written a number of Biblical Fiction books as well as one non-fiction work based on stories of women in scripture. Listen. This is one. wise. woman. The way she speaks about the Word of God and its role in her life, and the way she shares insight into the  history of God and His people is just incredible. This conversation is a bit like stepping into an Old Testament master class and it is AWESOME. If you’ve never read the Bible before, or if you’ve never really thought the Old Testament was for you, I hope you’ll give this episode a listen. I think you’ll find some hidden treasure just for you.  When I get the chance to hear men and women, just like Jill, who have studied the Bible indepthly, talk about the people that lived their lives within its pages, and the God who weaves it all together, it makes me so hungry to know more about the Bible. That’s the biggest reason I really enjoy Biblical fiction is because it takes stories I may know or may have never even heard and brings them to life in a way that ignites a sense of curiosity in me to dive deeper into the Word. Her newest book, Star of Persia: Esther’s Story, is the perfect picture of how to do just that.  The book of Esther is such a unique book of the Bible, ripe with details, but absent of one notable detail: the name of God. God’s name is NEVER mentioned throughout this epic tale, but as Beth Moore says “His name is all over it.” Jill does such a beautiful job diving into this familiar tale and bringing history and the activity of God and his people to life! Star of Persia just released this week so be sure and grab a copy! And just a little heads up… Jill’s book and drawing our eyes to the story of Esther is PERFECTLY timed as the celebration that is found at the end of the story, Purim, is just around the corner! We have something really special planned to celebrate and dive in to this story a little bit deeper, so be sure you’re subscribed and following along!  Find ways to get Jill’s book, listen to the conversation and subscribe wherever you listen to podcasts at the link in bio! Kelly said writing a book had been on her bucket list since she was 22, but she says it’s a ton of work! And it wasn’t surprising she spent the next 8-10 years finding excuses as family and business excuses kept her from writing her ‘special and unique’ book. Years later her excuses dissipated and the opportunity to finish her book came to be. Kelly’s book can best be described as biblical, historical, a thriller, fiction, a novel, encompassing the super natural called, ‘Over My Dead Body: A Super Natural Novel’. Little wonder it took so long to finish however what Kelly has achieved is proof that if you have a strong desire to do something it’s never to late to start. Going beyond that in two years she has brought four new products to market including an eBook, paperback, hardback, and audiobook all on ‘Over My Dead Body’. Now in her 50's, Kelly says calls herself a novelist. It's been a wild ride, but it's not over yet, as a biblical concepts companion guide for the novel is due out in May 2019; and later a screenplay plus a second novel in the series. Thrilled her book has achieved great success hitting #1 bestseller in Biblical Fiction in three categories on Amazon, her children’s book has hit #1 in 2 categories on Amazon.
