Brianna Battles believes athleticism does not end when motherhood begins. Frustrated by the lack of resources and support for pregnant and postpartum athletes, she founded Everyday Battles to bridge the gap. Now, she empowers everyone from Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) fighters and Olympians to hobbyists to challenge their perceived fragility, navigate body and identity changes, and pursue a lifetime of athleticism. Battles notes how strength and conditioning coaches are uniquely poised to influence communities and train general populations using a top-down coaching philosophy. Conducting needs analyses, she focuses on their athletic history, predispositions, and how they manage breathing, pressure, and tension during movement. By reverse-engineering a proactive return to performance, she helps clients overcome social media glorification and fearmongering to design an athlete-mom life that serves them. Battles discusses tapping into the “athlete brain” that craves routine and buy-in. Her advice? Get curious, practice brave, and embrace entrepreneurship as another form of progressive overload. It's knowing how to support girls and women in general because we have different-- we are not fragile at all, but we also might have different considerations. And that's all. It's just, it's understanding what those considerations may be at all different points across the lifespan, from coaching youth girls to collegiate athletes to professional athletes that are women, to then pregnancy and postpartum to perimenopausal, to menopausal, to elderly women.” 22:50

Strength conditioning as an over-40 athlete can be challenging enough on its own, but when you add in the dimension of being a postpartum athlete on top of everything else, special attention is warranted. Bridging the gap between rehab and performance requires an undefined timeline that is unique for you but will ultimately get you back to doing the things that you want to do. If You Are Thinking About Your Postpartum Training Needs, You Should: Don't be ashamed of your postpartum symptoms by surrounding yourself with people who understand how you need to train Make little adjustments that set up your body to perform better as a unit Understand your predispositions and reverse engineer what your training looks like Returning to the Sport You Love Brianna Battles is the Founder of Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism and CEO of Everyday Battles LLC. She is a relentless advocate and relatable resource for women who want training during pregnancy and to make a sustainable return to performance, lifestyle, function, career, and activity postpartum because postpartum is forever! You Are an Athlete Many women disqualify themselves as athletes. Brianna believes that if you are consistently dedicating yourself to movement, whether you are running, doing yoga, dancing, swimming, or anything that requires physical output, you are an athlete. While you can be an athlete in all seasons of your lifetime, how you interact with your athletic ability will change over time based on your body's needs. As a female athlete, especially if you are going through pregnancy or postpartum, you are not fragile, but you are also not invincible, and the way you train needs to reflect that. Bridging the Gap Between Rehab and Performance Because of the common male-dominated approach to training, birth is not given the same considerations when it comes to rehab and recovery as other events. Postpartum women are not a special or unique group of the population, and postpartum women deserve a more hands-on and substantial approach to their training. Like in jiu-jitsu, you need to be a white belt before becoming a blue belt. The same can be said for training postpartum. While pregnancy and postpartum can act as an incredible catalyst for learning about your body, it can bring out many of your vulnerabilities. If you can give yourself patience, rest, and grace, you can learn how to work with your postpartum symptoms and get to the point that you want to be. Are you showing yourself grace while you battle postpartum? Share your thoughts with me in the comments on the episode page. Its not about being a size or an ability, its honestly just an expression of dedicated physical output.” (19:35) “Postpartum requires a rehabilitation period, a rebuilding period, and then an undefined timeline of what is that going to look like for you getting back to the things you want to do.” (23:29) “If you can give yourself those seasons, and take it slow, take it gradually, get the support and resources that you need and not push boundaries, you are going to get what you want a hell of a lot faster than if you tried to push boundaries before your body or your brain or your lifestyle was ready for it.” (25:56) “I think that it is a very real possibility when we are talking about women's core and pelvic health needs across all sports. If you missed season 1 episode 12, I recommend listening to this one first. But for those of you who are not going to do that. Most of the time when I find a new show, I just jump in right and don't look back either so I get it. In which case, here is a quick recap... Rachel is a very talented athlete. She is a gymnast, a crossfitter and does jujitsu competitively. She is a crossfit L2 coach and a Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coach (P&PA Coach). She is also a Certified Professional Midwife (CPM) who attends out of hospital births both at home and at a freestanding birthing center in Meridian Idaho at the New Beginnings Birthing Center. When she was on the show back in March she was pregnant with her first baby and suffering from hyperemesis. We talked about her experience and about why coaching and midwifery are so well aligned. Basically, we shared a soapbox for the better part of an hour. It is one of my most listened to episodes to date. So, I asked her to join us again to share her birth story and to update us on her return to fitness. I am particularly interested to hear what might have felt unexpected, or if any given experience challenged her beliefs or changed her perspective. Because, while I don't believe we must have babies in order to be good at this work, it does provide a perspective that you cant get any other way.Enjoy the show.Resources and shout outsBlog Post that summarizes Rachel's tips on birth prep and return to fitness from this episodeExpecting Amy (Documentary about Amy Schumer's pregnancy/experience with hyperemesis)Dr. Jennifer Anacker, Anacker Clinic of Chiropractic, Meridian and Boise, IDWant to become a Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism Coach, find one, or purchase a training program to help you stay active during pregnancy and postpartum?Six exercises for the early postpartum period (Brianna Battles, owner/founder of Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism)Support the showThriving After Birth (an online course)Comprehensive Care60 Min Consultation: Use discount code- FirstConsult10%offInstagram: @mother.wit.maternityYou Tube Channel
In this episode, Rhonda shares 5 tips to stop peeing your pants when you jumpThe 5 tips are:1️⃣ Slight lean forward of your torsoThis helps to put your pelvic floor in a more optimal position to support the pressure of jumping. Think "tits over toes" as my mentor Brianna Battles would say!2️⃣ Soft landingTry to land "quietly" to absorb the force and decrease the impact to the pelvic floor.3️⃣ Exhale on the landingSometimes this can be the easiest way for the pelvic floor to contract to absorb the force of landing. This isn't the only way however! When in doubt, just keep breathing when you're jumping!4️⃣ Keep pelvic floor muscles RELAXEDThis may seem counterintuitive, but trying to hold a contraction/ kegel as you jump may actually tire out the pelvic floor and lead to more symptoms!5️⃣ Start with low reps, and gradually work up to more over days/ weeksSlowly build your body's tolerance to the impact of jumping by easing into it vs. trying to start with high volume.Plus two bonus tips:
Sometimes the best way to move forward is to remind ourselves of the past. Why? Because adaptation is a purposeful process. It requires reflection, inspection, and progression. Today's episode is all about answering the question “What advice would I give my younger self?” Some points are obvious, but there's also some questions that will challenge your assumptions, and give you the kick in the pants you may need to initiate the adaptation process. How should I be investing in myself to put me in the learning/ growth zone? (download the reflection questions for graphic) - (7:00) What feedback/criticism should I be listening to and applying? (11:30) How do I know which relationships and experiences are worth my time? (28:00) What skills should I be consistently working to improve? “I just felt like I had more to offer” If you've ever had that thought about yourself as a professional, you're not alone. We've all been in that situation - we create something that we care deeply about and we know it would add value to people's lives - but we aren't in an environment where it's supported, we hit some roadblocks that prevent us from following through, and we end up feeling ineffective and unfulfilled. Second-time guest and previous Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coach, Brianna Battles, is now the CEO & Founder of Pregnancy & Postpartum Athleticism. She coaches pregnant and postpartum athletes and has created a signature certification program for coaching professionals and practitioners. Instead of making excuses and despite her doubt, Brianna adapted to the situation and put her work out into the world anyway - and people bought it. In today's episode, Brianna shares the secrets she's uncovered throughout her journey of transitioning from Collegiate Strength and Conditioning to entrepreneurship, including: What to do when you feel like it's just not working, you have more to offer, and you see an underserved population that you want to help (7:38) How to recognize the line between a hobby and a full-time business opportunity (10:45) The number one most important thing you have to have for a high-quality product (14:00) How to know when it's time to hire help (35:20) The value that Brianna has to offer goes well beyond this podcast. In fact, if you hadn't heard yet, she and I are teaming up for our Art of Coaching Brand Builder event in Phoenix, AZ November 5-6th, 2022. Brianna Battles makes her first and long overdue appearance to talk about her experience as a coach and educator for pregnancy and postpartum. Brianna shares practical considerations for coaches navigating this huge demographic, as women form the majority of fitness consumers, and many of those women will at some point in their lifetime go through pregnancy, and will then always be postpartum. Brianna explains her thoughts on "athletic maturity" and being adaptable to "stay in the game, even if the game changes". --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/thefitnessdevil/support
Today I am speaking with Brianna Battles, the Founder of Pregnancy and Postpartum Athleticism. She teaches fitness coaches and practitioners how to understand the needs of their pregnant and postpartum clients (and sometimes their own bodies) so they can go out and be the expert in their community. As a strength and conditioning coach, she realized there was a need for more resources for pregnant and postpartum athletes. She believes the biggest impact can be had when coaches are trained how to help moms regain their athleticism and is doing that through her coaching certification. Having an entrepreneurial business model is all about loving what you do. When you put together what you love doing, talking about and teaching with an actual career, that's what we call a vocation. In this episode, Jill has an honest conversation with Brianna Battles and they talk about the fitness space, recognizing gaps in that space and how to find your opportunity there. Brianna also talks about the process of creating a certification. You first need to take ownership of what you know, what you understand, and your zone of genius in order to provide other people with the same knowledge. Besides knowing your audience, it's important to know how your audience behaves, and also how you behave. You need to trust yourself, show your cards, and follow your creator path. “It takes away from your own authenticity, and your own vision, and your own ideas when you get so consumed by what other people think or what other people are saying.” – Brianna Battles Jill is a fitness professional and business coach who effectively made the transition from training clients in person and having no time to build anything else to training clients online and actually being more successful. On this episode, we talk with Brianna Battles about how women should exercise during and after pregnancy. Having a child is a massive change in a woman's body and life - here's what to do (and what not to do) during this unique time.
I met Brianna at a pregnancy seminar this July and really enjoyed all of the information, wisdom, and knowledge she has about training during pregnancy. She along with Jessie Mundell are two of the women I trust to have the cutting edge information about proper training during this stage of a women's life. They don't operate from a fear based place on how to train but more of a questioning as to why would one want to do that right now. Brianna Battles is a woman's strength and conditioning coach based out of California, who specializes in coaching pregnant and postpartum athletes, as well as educating coaches on how to help athletes navigate the physical and mental considerations of athleticism during these chapters in a woman’s life. Kathryn and Brianna dig into all things pregnancy and postpartum, the unique and perpetually changing bodies of women and how this relates to athletics, human functionality, and performance. Brianna is a long time mover, trainer and kinesiologist who, as a well educated coach and movement professional, found herself in uncharted territory with conditions and limitations following the birth of her first child. We learn about her journey with healing her own body and unpacking her own experiences as she explored and uncovered information that wasn't readily available (even 5 years ago) with regards to diastasis recti, pelvic health functionality and more, which led to her present work supporting and advocating for women and their individual needs and goals during these vulnerable times. Brianna definitely does not equate vulnerability with weakness and always works with the whole woman. She shares her philosophies on "listening to our bodies," and how this isn't always inherently possible or reliable, yet how important it is to develop and exercise one's awareness in body, mind, breath, and movement tendency. The pair address the topics of incontinence, oft "normalized" or ignored entirely; breathing; creativity in movement strategies; and the value of communicating effectively risk versus reward scenarios to set people up for success not only in pregnancy but in postpartum and beyond. This episode is a must listen for coaches and trainers who work closely with women, and for all women everywhere.
A good coach does so much more than just address the physical. This week we are joined by Brianna Battles! Brianna is a mom to two young sons, and specializes in coaching pregnant and postpartum athletes. Having grown up as an athlete, she was surprised by the lack of resources and research-based information that was available to her as she tried to stay active during her first pregnancy, and then as she struggled to recover from a traumatic C-section. Brianna decided to live out the saying, “Be who you needed when you were younger,” and set out to create a coaching program to support pregnant and postpartum athletes. Now, in addition to coaching women 1:1 around the world, she provides online education courses and collaborates with women’s health professionals to ensure that all women have access to the information and resources that she herself felt were missing from her own experience. http://www.briannabattles.com/ Support the podcast! Welcome to our weekly 30-minute mindset, health, fitness, nutrition all that good stuff, we like to cover it all show. Today, bringing back an encore guest. I’m really excited about this. Her name is Brianna Battles. And if you caught episode number 126, you were first introduced to her there. She has a wealth of information. She’s a pregnancy and postpartum strength and conditioning coach with just a solid outlook when it comes to preparing our mindset for pregnancy and postpartum. One of my favorite quotes from the first podcast is a really good reminder that pregnancy is temporary, postpartum is forever. And to really make sure that we’re intentional about nurturing our bodies and making sure we’re set up for long-term success for the health of our selves and for our babies. So I’m really thrilled to welcome you back. We have so much more to cover, Brianna. Welcome to the show! Brianna Battles: Hey, thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited to be on here again. Cassy Joy: Absolutely. I’m excited to have you. And if you guys are sitting at your computers and just eager to Google right away, you can find her on the web at BriannaBattles.com. But today we’re going to cover a couple of different topics. Since posting that podcast, I think both Brianna and myself were reached out to by a bunch of folks who listened to the episode and just confirmed how much it resonated with them. And the story of how to really listen to our new body and what that really means. It’s not something that’s necessarily intuitive. And I really wanted to invite her back on so we could follow up on that conversation. Sort of a part two. So we’re going to talk about that today. I also went and saw my very first pelvic floor specialist. I’m running a couple of minutes behind, and it’s because I just got home from my appointment. So it’s really fresh. So I’ve been talking about pelvic health all day! {laughing} Brianna Battles: Oh boy! {laughs} Cassy Joy: Oh boy. It’s actually really excited. I got home, and I told my husband; I can’t wait to tell you all the things I learned! {laughing} Brianna Battles: Oh my gosh. I know my husband things I’m so crazy. He’s like; I’m pretty sure I know more about the pelvic floor than any man ever should.

But she has; I’ll briefly tell you a little bit about her, and then I’ll ask her to tell more about her. And it’s just an honor to have you on the show today. Welcome. Brianna Battles: Thank you so much for having me. I’m really excited to chat with you, and whoever listens in on this. It sounded like a great opportunity. Cassy Joy: Yeah! It’s a group; let’s see. We love to geek out over science, to tell you a little bit about our Fed and Fit podcast audience. We love to geek out, we love mindset pieces, and overall wellness. So you're a perfect fit. And I know there’s a lot of; whether they’re currently pregnant, postpartum, wanting to get pregnant, or just wanting to be in this conversation. Maybe they’re healthcare coaches, or maybe they’re nutritionists that are listening. Or maybe they’re fitness coaches, wanting ways to better support their clients and their athletes.
When it comes to exercise postpartum, the primary message is to take the time you need to heal. Don’t rush to “get your body back” because it is easy to do more harm than good by pushing your body too hard before it is ready. The best thing to do for your body right after having a baby is to rest and recover. There are people out there who want to help you and who have the right tools to help you. It is okay that your body takes time to heal and build strength back. There are smart ways to develop strength and function, such as learning how posture and breathing can help you in everyday activities. When your body is ready, and that could be months or years after giving birth, you can develop a fitness strategy that is appropriate for yourself.
