2023 marked 75 years of peacekeeping missions in the UN. In this time, more than 70 peacekeeping operations have been deployed by the UN. Hundreds and thousands of military personnel, UN police, and other civilians from more than 120 countries have participated in UN peacekeeping operations. So, looking only at the numbers, surely peacekeeping operations must have been a success? Recently, however, several countries have asked the UN to leave, including Mali and the Democratic Republic of Congo. So, what is this a symptom of? Where are we, 75 years after the first UN peacekeepers set their foot on foreign ground? Is this still functional? Has it worked so far? And if so, will it continue to do so in the future? What is the future for peacekeeping? In this episode of the NUPI podcast The World Stage, we take a closer look at what UN Peacekeeping mission are and whether they have been successful. In this episode you'll hear from David Haeri, (Director, Policy, Evaluation and Training Division, UN Peacekeeping) Annika Hilding Norberg (Head of Peace Operations and Peacebuilding, Geneva Centre for Security Policy), Tor Henrik Andersen (Minister Counsellor, Peace and Security, Africa, Norwegian Permanent Mission to the United Nations in New York) and NUPI Research Professor Cedric de Coning. ‘Is coning during pregnancy normal?' ‘Could I have prevented this? What exercises can I do to reduce this.' ‘Why am I experiencing it this pregnancy after addressing it last pregnancy?' These are the questions that came to the surface when Tenyka emailed me her question about her weak pelvic floor, coning, and pregnancy symptoms. After working with prenatal and postnatal women for over 20 years, I've realized what causes coning of the belly and how to manage it. The thing is… when it comes to healing the body, it's never too late. And releasing and relaxing the body is imperative as you progress through pregnancy. In this episode, I'm sharing the exact advice and solution I would provide to someone who is like Tanika and experiencing coning during pregnancy after working postpartum to restrengthen their ore. I share information like this on our Knocked-Up Fitness monthly coaching calls and I knew it would be beneficial with you. Click play to hear all of this and… [01:06] The question I got asked about pregnancy symptoms after being pregnant and recovering postpartum previously. [02:31] What is causing symptoms (incontinence, coning of the belly, weak pelvic floor) to arise during pregnancy. [06:46] The importance of using your breath during your pregnancy workouts and daily movement during pregnancy. [08:21] How to zip up from your pelvic floor through the top of your head to prevent peeing your pants when cough or sneeze. [09:53] Why you can't fully prevent or stop all incontinence during pregnancy. [11:10] An explanation of what is coning of the belly is, what it means, what leads to diastasis recti, and how you can you prevent diastasis recti. [16:05] What you can do now if you are experiencing the same symptoms as Tenyka. If you enjoyed this episode, I'd love to invite you to join me inside our Knocked-Up Fitness Membership where hundreds of women come together for questions like this, monthly group coaching calls, and a daily workout schedule to prepare your body for birth and delivery. In this episode of the The World Stage, NUPI researchers Thor Olav Iversen and Cedric de Coning discuss how to sustain peace amidst the uncertainty and unpredictability of complex crises.Cedric introduced the concept of adaptive peacebuilding in a 2018 article in International Affairs, and he and his co-authors has further developed the concept and tested it in several case studies in a recently published book Adaptive Peacebuilding A New Approach to Sustaining Peace in the 21st Century. Together with Thor Olav, he discuss their findings and reflects on what constitutes the liberal model of peace and why it has come under heavy criticism, the local nature of peace processes, the agency of the people affected by conflict and how peacebuilding efforts need to continuously adapt to the complex and dynamic realities on the ground. What issues are likely to be covered in the Agenda for Peace? Why is it important? UN Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called for a ‘New Agenda for Peace' that can help the United Nations and international community address the many complex challenges the world faces today. In this edition of the World Stage podcast, NUPI's Cedric de Coning is in conversation with Asif Khan, the Director of the Policy and Mediation Division of the Department of Political and Peacebuilding Affairs of the United Nations. The ‘old' Agenda for Peace refers to a policy document that was first released by UN Secretary-General Boutrous Boutrous Ghali in 1992. It was a landmark policy document that framed the UN's peace and security's theory of change around preventive diplomacy, peacekeeping and peacebuilding. This podcast considers the main issues that the New Agenda for Peace needs is likely to address, including new issues like the climate-peace nexus, and the risks and opportunities that new technologies like Artificial Intelligence may pose for international peace and security. Climate security was one of Norway's priority areas during its period as an elected member of the UN Security Council (2021–2022). What did Norway achieve? Hans Olav Ibrekk, Norway's Special Envoy for Climate, Peace and Security, and Florian Krampe, director of the Climate Change and Risk Programme at SIPRI, take stock on Norway's effort and lessons learned for others that will be working on this agenda in the future. Cedric de Coning, Research Professor at NUPI, is hosting the conversation. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
In this episode of the World Stage podcast, NUPI's Cedric de Coning is in conversation with Amitav Acharya and Stein Tønnesson on the emergence of non-Western and Global International Relations. The discipline came into being as an academic field during the past half-century when the US and its Western allies were the driving force behind globalization and the establishment of the global governance architecture. As a result, IR scholarship was mostly pre-occupied with international relations from a western perspective, and western – especially American – scholars, universities and research institutes dominated the field. Global IR is a movement to open up the field to non-western or Global IR theorizing and research.Amitav Acharya is a distinguished Professor of international relations at American University in Washington D.C. and one of the leading proponents of a movement in International Relations scholarship to globalize the theory and focus of IR research.Stein Tønnesson is a former Director of the Peace Research Institute of Oslo. His research has focused on the dynamics of peace and conflict in Asia.Cedric de Coning is a Research Professor with NUPI's Center for United Nations and Global Governance, and the coordinator of the Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON). The UN Secretary-General, Antonio Guterres, has set a process in motion to re-think the UN's role in peace and security in the current global context. A team in the UN Secretariat is currently drafting a policy think piece called the New Agenda for Peace, which will be one of several thematic areas that will be considered at the 2024 Summit of the Future. The ‘old' Agenda for Peace was a major policy document that was produced under UN Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali in 1992. It framed the way the UN understood and approached preventive diplomacy, peacemaking, peacekeeping, and peacebuilding for the following two decades. The New Agenda for Peace is perhaps less ambitious, but the process provides us with an opportunity to reflect on how the UN's concepts and capabilities need to be adapted to remain relevant in today's rapidly changing global landscape. We have invited Ian Martin to help us talk through these questions. Ian has led the UN's human rights work in Rwanda and the process to organise a popular consultation in Timor-Leste. He was the deputy head of the UN peacekeeping operation in Ethiopia and Eritrea, and the Special Representative of the Secretary-General in Nepal. Following the 2011 international intervention, he was the UN's Special Representative in Libya. From 2014 to 2015, Ian was a member of the Independent High-Level Panel on United Nations Peace Operations, which is why we are looking in this episode at what the findings of this Panel has to offer for the New Agenda of Peace. In this episode Ian is in conversation with Cedric de Coning, a research professor with NUPI's Center for United Nations and Global Governance, and the coordinator of the Effectiveness of Peace Operations Network (EPON). Africa has had more UN peacekeeping missions than any other region in the world. Today more than fifty thousand troops are deployed with UN operations on the continent. Despite this, violence still continues in some of these areas and in some places, there is anger over the UN's continued presence. Just last month, anti-UN protests erupted in Goma and Butembo, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, when citizens accused the UN of failing to contain violence by armed groups. While in Mali, UN troop rotations were suspended for a month after the government arrested 49 soldiers from Ivory Coast, saying they had arrived in the country without permission. Ivory Coast said the soldiers were part of the UN peacekeeping mission in Mali. So, what is the future of UN peacekeeping in Africa? Host: Alan Kasujja (@kasujja) Guests: Dr. Cedric de Coning, a research professor at the Norwegian Institute of International Affairs and Senior Advisor at the African Center for the Constructive Resolution of Disputes and Dr. Yvan Yenda Ilunga, Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Relations at Salve Regina University.

Big week for the boys at TCB as we finally test out the cone theory, with surprising results, not to mention Kushagra also graces us with his presence. This week we begin with a quick recap and exclusive sneak peek at our coning adventures (be sure to also check out the full video on YouTube). We also get a story about a potential Karen and a small yappy dog and how to carry out revenge against terrible dog owners. New game this week as all the talk about psychos in the previous episode led Sen down a strange internet rabbit hole. As a result, the boys this week must guess if the Myers-Briggs personality type presented to them belongs to a certified psycho or to a functioning member of society, in a game we're calling “Psycho or Samaritan.” Finally this week, another new segment as the boys delve deep into each other's psyche by answering some simple “Most Likely To” questions. Some questions prove to be straightforward to answer, whilst others cause division as tensions flare in this edition. Also this week: Bus hooligans, Hot Wheels, Mother Theresa, Cuban Military Bases and Fanfic. Segments this week: The Logue: Tired of reaching around each other (at least on the podcast), the boys have instead decided to reach around the week's news stories, events and viral trends. Psycho or Samaritan: The boys are given one of the MBTI personality traits and have to decide if this is the personality of a prominent psycho or everyday Samaritan. Most Likely To: The boys answer listener provided “Most Likely To” questions as we discover what the boys really think of each other. ___________________________________________________ SPONSORS

Soul Soil: Where Agriculture and Spirit Intersect with Brooke Kornegay
With modern conventional agriculture, we have lost the art of connecting with the land and growing food that was handed down by our ancestors. Not only are we left with a fraction of the genetic diversity of our food crops, we have also lost our connection to the land and any mention of the invisible beings who share the land with humans. Descritpion: Over the past 70 years, more than one million troops from more than 110 nations have participated in 70 UN peacekeeping missions. It is a remarkable achievement, but at a time when multilateral institutions are increasingly asked to justify their relevance, the future of peace operations is less certain. The global order is changing and this uncertainty has profound implications on the world’s biggest international organisation and its flagship activity. This roundtable generates a discussion about UN approaches to peace by analysing challenges and opportunities that the UN is facing in the changing global order. Participants will collectively grapple with the following dilemmas: How is the rebalancing of relations between states of the global North and the global South impacting UN decision making? How is the rise of regional organisations as providers of peace impacting the primacy of UN peace operations? How have violent extremism and fundamentalist non-state actors changed the nature of international responses and what does this mean for previously advanced longer-term approaches to conflict resolution? How are demands from non-state actors for greater emphasis on human security impacting the UN’s credibility, and is the UN even able to prioritise people-centered approaches over state-centered ones? There are some trends and fads that either died to soon or need to be redeemed. In this episode we discuss some of the trends that we feel either need to recaptured in the hearts of the American or to be completely forgotten. 1) Animatronic Characters SMXLL Just yesterday we heard the disappointing news that with a revamp of Chuck E. Cheese's around the country they will be removing and disbanding the loveable and yet slightly creepy animatronic band that as kids we thought was the coolest band ever. Was this a mistake or was it bound to happen? 2) Coning SMLXL Just like any fad, as we look back on it we are left to wonder ... Why? Why did we participate in this and why was this ever a thing. Coning was one of these fads with participants ordering ice cream cones and then when they are being handed the cone, they grab the ice cream instead of the cone. The shock and confusion factor is what we determined the real benefit of this trend was. 3) Planking SMLXL This was one of the activities that you would do in a group. You would try and find the most outrageous and random places to plank and take a quick picture. This was one that should and hopefully will be brought back. 4) Parkour SMLXL As describe by Jim Halpert (John Krasinski) "The goal is getting from Point A to Point B as creatively as possible, so, technically, they are doing parkour as long as Point A is "delusion" and Point B is "the hospital." This was a huge fad and is still continuing on with classes and groups that work on their parkouring skills on a daily basis. 5) Flash Mob SMLXL We all remember the phase the world went through when we would look at our facebook page and every other post is a new flash mob video. If you were lucky enough to participate or witness one than you know it is a special experience. Should this trend make a comeback? 6) Razor Phones SLXLM Razor Phones where the iPhones of the mid 2000's and could be making a comeback soon. According to Metro writer, Rob Waugh, "New Motorola owner Lenovo promises a new RAZR handset next month, which will ‘flip back to the Razr days of yesteryear and get ready for the future." Could this be the comeback to this trend from the past? 7) Roger Shiffman Trendy Toys SMLXL Roger Shiffman is responsible for the creation of some amazing toys that include iconic Furbys and Gigapets. What new, trendy and amazing toy will he make next? 8) Tebowing SMLXL Who doesn't remember this Denver bronco quarterback and his reputation for saying a quick prayer when he scored a touchdown and before and after games. This was emulated throughout high schools across the country in a serious and other times mocking manner. Will this fad make a comeback?

Our mail sack has been punched once again, but this time we asked for it. Warren had submitted our feed to the website Culture.ca, who (wisely) rejected our application to be listed. The reason they gave us was that we "use an abundance of coarse language. For the moment we are not able to inform our users on this, yakkety, yakkety, blah, blah". Fuckers! We're waiting for the moment that technology is invented, so the public from Culture.ca can finally overcome their antipathy towards human tails. If you have any ideas for content we could include in a special podcast just for culture.ca, let us know via email (maskedman@limitedappeal.net).
