You often hear people reference their own OCD, but there's far more to it than just the desire to be orderly or neat. Today, Emily Kircher-Morris explores the topic of obsessive compulsive thinking patterns, their impact on individuals, and the importance of discussing mental health with children. Jessica Whipple, author of 'I Think I Think a Lot,' shares her personal experiences with OCD and the coping strategies she has developed. The conversation also highlights the significance of representation in children's literature and the role of books in teaching coping skills. If you're curious about OCD, this episode will help. Takeaways Obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessive thinking and compulsive behaviors, which can manifest in various ways such as contamination fears, taboo thoughts, and perfectionism. Children's literature plays a crucial role in representing diverse experiences, teaching coping skills, and reducing stigma around mental health and neurodivergence. Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) can be an effective treatment for OCD, helping individuals manage their thoughts and behaviors. It is important to have open conversations with children about mental health, providing them with the tools to understand and cope with their emotions and experiences. Sign up for the Educator Hub now, the window for registration closes Sunday night, June 2, at 11:59pm pacific time. We'd love for you to join us! Brewing is in the family for Broken Strings (https://www.brokenstringsbrewery.com) founder Charles Frizzell. His grandfather spent the better part of his brewing career at Puerto Rico's Corona, and he grew up hearing the stories. Today, Frizzell brews very different beer, and at a very different scale, than his grandfather did. Yet doing it right is a matter of family pride. Like many Florida breweries, Broken Strings is unapologetic about brewing flamboyant, flavor-forward beers, indexing first and foremost for customer happiness. Still, Frizzell is guided by a primary directive, no matter what style he's brewing: to make beer that he's proud of. That mission gets tested when he brews their house Kölsch—via three decoctions—on their small three-barrel system. It's tested even more when brewing creative “soda sour” beers based on soft drinks. Figuring out how to reconstruct the flavors—but with natural ingredients and in a way that works with the acidity, alcohol, and malt inherent in beer—is a true culinary challenge. In this episode, Frizzell discusses how he builds and brews these flavor-forward beers, including: strategically balancing extracts with fruit and purée, to maximize intensity without tasting and smelling synthetic kettle-souring for clean and accessible acidity how to get the most from pricey fruit and spices using hop products to maximize yield on a small system brewing like a chef And more. *This episode is brought to you by: * G&D Chillers (https://gdchillers.com): What if you could chill your beer with a more efficient chiller? The Answer? G&D Chillers new Micro Channel Condensers! G&D's Micro Channel Condensers are highly efficient in hotter regions, use a fraction of the refrigerant over traditional chillers which provides less opportunity for leaks and lower global warming potential. Notes From the Podcast episode: Excerpt from ‘Come Away My Beloved’ daily devotional:  “Will you be like an instrument with broken strings from which the musician can bring forth no music?” The important thing isn’t that we stay so strong that we never break How do we react when we feel broken? How would a rare violin be treated? Why we are like that violin and how should we respond?   Second Chances First of all, thank you to those of you I know have been praying that I find my direction going forward. The path gets a little clearer every day. As many of you know, I volunteer with the homeless, the local women's prison, and a prison aftercare program. Many of those women are like that broken violin and I've seen how God can fix their brokenness. For awhile now I've wondered how I could practically help and I know employment and finances play a big part in becoming a contributing member of society. So I've decided to start training some of these women to work virtually. To that end, I’m trying out a new service called SendOwl to help sell and deliver the content that I and my special ladies will create. So far it's really easy for me to use. I uploaded an entire video course as a zip file and am anxious to see how people on the receiving end like the service as well. In order to do that I'm giving you the opportunity to purchase my Online Foundation Bootcamp. This training was originally presented live and covered domain names, web hosting, setting up a Wordpress website and adding content, building an email list, and using productivity tools to make the best use of your time. It normally sells for $97, but as a member of my community you can have the entire Bootcamp for just $5. Click the link below to find out more. Online Foundation Bootcamp P.S. If you take the time to tell me how you liked this delivery method and if it was easy enough to pay and receive your content, I'll also gift you any one of my Udemy courses as a thank you for your feedback. Thank you and have a great day, Carol

If you've ever wanted to improve at a skill, sport or job or become the best at whatever you do, but have been told you're not talented enough, didn't start early enough, or that you don't have 10,000 hours to spare, then do we have the show for you! Today we'll be talking with Anders Ericsson, a preeminent leader in new science of expertise, and the researcher behind Malcom Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule from his book Outliers. He's also the author of a brand-new paradigm shifting book I believe and hope will set the stage, for backbone of education and performance for decades to come. Today we'll talk about expertise, what it is, where it comes from, how you can achieve it, what we all can learn from others who have it, how to help develop it in ourselves and our children, and why we can almost all dramatically improve our performance in almost any area we put our minds and hearts too. That plus we'll look at homo erectus and homo exercens, Maverick, Viper, and Iceman, Blue Bunny Ice-Cream, Paganini and the Broken Strings, and What a Banana Monk and a Pot have to do with anything. Questions and Topics Include: Expertise – how you can achieve How we can develop expertise in almost any area we put our hearts and minds in What does Mozart have to do with expertise Why Mozart wasn't really ‘born' with his music skills Why perfect pitch can be trained (particularly early on) How a study of Japanese children showed they were all able to learn perfect pitch What powerful lesson we can learn from the Sakihabara study How learning Mandarin as a first language can help you as a musician or singer What is the story of Steve Falloon What our memory can be expanded much more than we ever thought How we can improve our memory What is the new science of expertise? What's the typical approach we take to practice or learning and why doesn't it get us very far? What can we learn about Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule (business, career) that came from Anders Ericsson's work. Why doing what you already know how to do is NOT very effective practice What is the right sort of practice? What's the importance of getting outside of your comfort zone How to improve endurance running performance How to improve running speed How the right training helps the body to adapt tremendously What is purposeful practice and feedback? Why tasks require the “correct” action. Why the 10,000 hour rule needs to be corrected Why practice doesn't make perfect Why experience is not necessarily an advantage or the answer Why feedback is so important for improvement How do we harness adaptability What do the brains of London Cabbies have to do with anything? What do Maverick, Viper and Iceman (and the Top Gun Program) have to do with anything? How to refine and entrench your new skills Why it's so important to have a situation where you can make decisions and get immediate feedback How to simulate tests (such as GRE, LSAT, SAT or otherwise) Natalie Coughman Olympic Medalist – how she had a breakthrough moment in training by shifting her focus What's wrong with the concept of “will power” How do you build your motivation up? What's the importance of a teacher or a mentor? Why parents should find an activity they can do with their children Why having an expert on your side is so important Why having a parent who supports and helps the child is so important How important belief in your child is, even if they don't display talent The story of Olympic Runner Gunder hagg Why belief that you can do something is so powerful Why we should all make the assumption we can do something (until really proven otherwise) Why giving children an early experience of what training can do for their performance is so important Laslo Polgar and Clara and their experiment with their kids Stages to improve our performance First improve the motivational aspect – get motivation first What does it mean to “get serious” Why a good parent wants to start with 15-30 minutes and gives good feedback Why the worst thing you can do is to push someone well beyond the point at which they can concentrate Why you do not want to burn someone (especially a child) out. What's missing from Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 hour rule Why the Beetles 10,000 hours is inaccurate or doesn't explain their composition. Why sleep and rest is so important – especially for experts Why napping is so important for performance Why shorter chunks are so much more valuable for training Why you're never too old to change, but why having an advisor is so helpful to help you gradually make the change What are some of the things that would motivate someone to begin making the changes Why the age ceiling for change is a myth What we can learn from violinist Paganini playing on a single string Why childhood prodigy's are not what we think What we can learn from the University of British Columbia and an experiment then did Why deliberate practice means deliberate improvement Why we should all have a goal or a project World Expertise Expert Anders Ericsson Shares Secrets to Mastery and Peak Performance For Adults & Children, How to Improve at Anything, Why Talent's a Myth & Why Malcolm Gladwell's 10,000 Hour Rule Needs Updating.
