Who doesn't want to close more sales deals? Without sales, you have no business yet some business owners really struggle with this part. If you only have a small staff most likely you, the business owner, are the chief salesperson. Like many owners, you don't want to come across as salesy so you actually become less effective at it. The question is, how do you close more deals without coming across like a used car salesman? No offense to used car salesmen. This week's guest, Darrell Amy, will help us dispel the misunderstanding of the sales process so we can all go in confidence and authenticity to close more deals. You're not selling a product or service, you're solving someone's problem. Take a listen. Book: “Revenue Growth Engine: How to align marketing and sales to accelerate growth” https://www.revenuegrowthengine.com/#section-CK7KwRd4q9  Podcast: Selling From the Heart https://www.revenuegrowthpodcast.com/  https://www.revenuegrowthengine.com/  Email: DAmy@revenuegrowthengine.com  Key Takeaways: How to set realistic sales goals The way you open the sales call, you close it. Focus on selling the outcome not the features  There are three types of buyers. 1) CEO 2) Middle managers 3) The rest of us One is more price conscious than the other Start with a clear understanding of what the customer wants as an outcome Questions: We all want to close more sales deals. Why don't we? What are some common mistakes? People commonly think of marketing and sales as the same thing. Can you clarify the difference? Had a client that was thinking marketing was going to solve all his sales problems. The first thing we uncovered during our research was most of his clients (he sells insurance) didn't know about the other insurance options he sold and were open to hearing more. But for some reason, didn't follow up. Can you speak to identifying low hanging fruit? Today's guest is passionate about helping great companies grow revenue. He's the author of the best-selling book Revenue Growth Engine, How to Align Sales and Marketing to Drive Accelerate Growth. He is the host of the Revenue Growth Podcast on the C-Suite Radio Network and the co-host of Selling from the Heart podcast. He is a member of the Forbes Business Council and a C-Suite Advisor. Women on The Move Podcast
The keys to owning your own journey and leadership success with longtime CEO and C-suite advisor Sabrina Horn

Women on The Move Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 13, 2023 27:46

Sabrina Horn believes that we're all the director and lead actor in our own movie—and therefore we control our destiny. “You have one life to live and it's yours,” she says. “You have to push every day. You have to fight, and when you get shot down, you have to get up the next day and try it again.” In this episode, the longtime CEO, C-suite advisor, professor and bestselling author sits down with Women on the Move Podcast Host Sam Saperstein to discuss this philosophy and her own career journey. Sabrina founded a PR company in the tech industry in 1991 when she was just 29—and she ran it for 24 years before selling it. At that point, she made a decision: “I decided that rather than doing public relations for companies and putting companies on the map, I wanted to switch to really helping individuals like CEOs and founders, entrepreneurs, students as well, people who run teams in corporations, individuals who want to become leaders and help give them the tools to get over certain challenges that they have,” she tells Sam. Starting out as a 29-year-old female CEO in 1991 was a bold move, and Sabrina says one of the reasons for her success was the fearlessness that people have in their 20s. “I would say 98 percent of the executives I worked with were almost twice my age, and they were all male,” she recalls. “I felt like as long as I've done my homework and I'm really intelligent about the advice I'm giving them, there's no reason to be worried about my gender, and if they don't want to work with me because I'm a woman, then there's plenty of other fish in the sea to work with.” PR as strategy Sabrina says a common misperception about public relations work is that it's all about the message and the hype. “It was never just about putting out press releases,” she clarifies. “It was about helping them think through what those strategies might be, what move are you making today in anticipation of this move you're going to make tomorrow and the day after tomorrow so that it's strategic, it's a plan. It can't just be tactical.” In terms of helping companies grow strategically, Sabrina says being authentic and not being intimidated or backing down is important for leadership: “This is where standing true to what you believe, if you really have done your homework and you really have done your research and you know in your heart that the direction that they're going in is not going to help them, I would always say, Look, you can do that. You can do whatever you want. But I'm here. You ask me to come here to give you my advice. So if you go down this path, here's what can happen and if you go down this other path, here's what can happen here.” Why “Fake it ‘til you make it” is the worst business advice On the surface, she says, there's nothing wrong with this common adage. “If you are doing cognitive behavioral therapy to practice certain behaviors that you wish you could exude, like more confidence, and you practice that and you visualize what that might look like or you wear a certain color to a meeting because it makes you feel more confident or as Amy Cuddy did over a decade now ago in a TED talk about power posing where you stretch your arms out, that was how fake it till you make it got started and it's okay because you're just helping yourself,” she says. “It's self-help.” The problem with the phrase, she says, is that it's mutated over the years to become an excuse to lie and exaggerate the truth at the expense of others for personal good. “It was like an excuse for bad leadership,” she tells Sam. “But the problem is that the truth always comes out. The investor will do her due diligence, the customer will use the product and it won't work as prescribed. Then you expose yourself, you set yourself back, you embarrass yourself and your team. You ruin your credibility.” Rather than go down that dangerous route, Sabrina encourages people to be authentic at every turn. “It's about looking at yourself in the mirror every day and saying, this is what I stand for,” she says. “These are my values. This is what my company stands for. This is what we don't stand for, and committing every day to that. And surrounding yourself with people who will call you on that when you don't stay true to that.” Disclaimer: The speakers' opinions belong to them and may differ from opinions of J.P. Morgan Chase & Co and its affiliates. In this week's episode of the SIMPLE brand podcast, I talk with Darrell Amy, author of  Revenue Growth Engine: How to Align Sales and Marketing to Accelerate Growth! When it comes to revenue, most businesses don't appear to have a true revenue growth strategy or the processes in place to even drive growth. Outside of that,  some companies are really good at focusing on driving revenue through new customers while others are really good at cross-selling to existing customers. Unfortunately, very few appear to be good at doing both. But it is possible to focus on and be good at both. And If you can drive simply reasonable growth in net-new business while also cross-selling your current clients, then you can actually double your revenue in less than 3 years. But it does take an intentional strategy and it does take the right alignment between Sales and Marketing. And this week's guest is here to help you learn how to do just that. It's Darrell Amy.Darrell's the author of the best-selling book Revenue Growth Engine: How To Align Sales and Marketing To Drive Accelerate Growth. He's the host of the Revenue Growth Podcast on the C-Suite Radio Network and the co-host of the Selling From the Heart podcast. And he's a member of the Forbes Business Council and a C-Suite Advisor. Darrell and I discuss his lessons around aligning your Sales and Marketing teams, growing your revenue aggressively yet realistically, and the number one way to differentiate yourself among your competitors. SPOILER ALERT: It's all in the experience you deliver. Some of the topics we discuss include:The law of exponential revenue growthThe value ratio of net-new customers vs existing customersHow the experience we deliver drives whether customers continue to buy from youThe difference between a customer and a clientHow to break down the Sales and Marketing silos How to ensure all your teams view everything from the eyes of the customerThe importance of having your frontline team members understand what it feels like to receive the level of experience that your customers expect Darrell and I discuss a hypothesis on how the identity given to your team members empowers them in delivering your customer experience RESOURCES FROM THIS EPISODEDarrell's siteDarrell's book - Revenue Growth Engine: How to Align Sales and Marketing to Accelerate Growth

BIO: Andrew Bryant, CSP is a Global expert on Self Leadership, a C-Suite Advisor, an Award-Winning Coach, and a Best-Selling Author. STORY: Andrew invested heavily in a gym with the plan to offer service-based health and wellness. Low-cost gyms came up and swallowed his business. LEARNING: Understand how to get in and out of a business, test your market first and know what your customers want, not what they need.   “Sunk cost does not account for the learning.” Andrew Bryant   Guest profilehttps://www.linkedin.com/in/andrewbryant/ (Andrew Bryant), CSP is a Global expert on Self Leadership, a C-Suite Advisor, an Award-Winning Coach, and a Best-Selling Author. English by birth, Australian by passport, Singapore by PR, and Brazilian by wife, Andrew is adept at moving across cultures. Andrew is on a mission to ‘wake people up’ to their best possible selves, which he does through his Conference Keynotes, Leadership Team Facilitation, and Coaching. He is Leadership Faculty for Singapore Management University, where he also contributes to the Women in Leadership Program and is most proud of the work he has done building self-esteem and confidence for at-risk teenagers. Worst investment everAndrew’s first degree is in physiotherapy. He worked in hospitals for a couple of years and later with sports teams. Bringing his strengths together to build a businessAndrew decided to bring together his medical and sports experience to create a wellness center. So he bought a gym. Andrew had always been critical of gyms because they were poorly managed, and there were many myths about fitness. He planned to bring science to fitness as a physiotherapist. Investing too heavilyAndrew overly invested in the gym without realizing that he was paying for things he didn’t need to pay for. Then he hired the best human resource graduates from the local university to be personal trainers and paid them a lot. He believed that would make the difference. Andrew invested in equipment, real estate, and staff. Too much competitionAndrew focused on offering service-based health and wellness, and it worked for just a little while. Then the fitness craze hit Australia, and low-cost gyms sprouted everywhere. These gyms weren’t selling service; they were selling hope. While Andrew was charging $49 a month for a subscription, the new gyms would charge $49 a year. The low charge obviously attracted people, and this drove his customers away. A flawed business modelThe biggest mistake Andrew made was not realizing that his business model was flawed. Instead, he continued investing more and more money until he ran out. Lessons learnedTest your market firstTest your market first with a minimum viable product to see if things are going to work out before putting all your money into the product. Have somebody to argue against your propositionLook for someone that you trust and spend time arguing against your idea and pick holes. This will help you see if your idea is viable. Understand how to get in and out of a businessWhen creating your business plan, remember to include an exit plan should the business fail. If you don’t have an exit plan, you don’t have a business; you’ve just bought yourself a job. Andrew’s takeawaysLook at the dynamics of an industry and exit when necessaryBefore you enter a market, look at the dynamics in that industry. Consider how the competition is. Sometimes you can’t swim against the tide, especially when there is a significant change in that industry. It may make sense to exit when this happens. What the customer wants versus what they needGet to understand what the customer wants and deliver that to them. It is not your business to determine what the customer needs; give them what they want. Actionable adviceIf you are in the stuck phase, know that this too shall pass. It's no secret that we are experiencing a moment in history that is uncertain and distressing. The coronavirus pandemic has affected millions of businesses around the country, leaving employees and leaders in a state of panic. Executives at these businesses hold a heavy responsibility on their shoulders to remain calm, adaptable, and resilient. As the world changes drastically around us, we are looking to these c-suite leaders to step up and set an example.  Damon D'Amore, C-Suite Advisor and Elite Performance Mentor, works with executives every day to help them build their legacy, meaning the clear and consistent message the stakeholders in his clients' lives and businesses will share when they are gone. While he believes we all have to focus on tactical and immediate business needs, the only way to secure a legacy, the narrative of which you control, is to make tradeoffs with time and dedicate resources to focusing on what matters most. This is done by focusing on these three pillars: Psychological: MindsetCreate filters to determine what time and resource demands are worthy of focusing on. You are the one who prioritizes your time, not your employees, customers, or board. The result is establishing confidence that you are focused on what matters most. Emotional: Resilience as a Lifestyle Resilience is not about surviving one challenge or trauma. It is being an optimist in the sense of waking up everyday knowing things will go wrong but you have the tools to survive and thrive. Knowing you will be ‘OK' combined with the confidence that you are focused on the right priorities, you will be equipped to lead effectively.  Narrative: Share Your StoryUse the data points of your life and career to tell a unique and compelling story. Your story will gain advocacy for your goals from all of your stakeholders like your company's board, customers, investors, family and friends. You need to know your story, believe it, and learn how to communicate it.  For executives out there that are still at a loss for how to cope with the changes that coronavirus has brought, and will continue to bring, Damon says to compose yourself and take stock of what you have and what you need. If you're safe and have food, shelter and whatever medical supplies you need for a couple of weeks, you're likely in a good place. You should also find a way to be present and focus. That can mean learning to meditate, breath work, or practicing gratitude. You don't need to travel to a mountaintop in a faraway land to learn to do any of these. You can watch a video online, listen to a podcast, or download an app.  Another helpful tool is to find an accountability partner or group. Even if it's just 1 hour per day, get on a video chat with coworkers or peers. Set an intention or goal for the next hour, mute your video, put on headphones and do the work. Just seeing others being productive will alleviate some stress and help you to focus. The reassuring news is that many of us are in the same boat and there's no need to be embarrassed about sharing your feelings with your peers. As we all navigate this new reality, let's not forget that this is an opportunity to build a legacy that we are proud of. Getting your mindset right, being resilient, and having the confidence to share your story in a vulnerable way sets you apart from the masses. As an executive, your responsibility is just as large as the impact you are capable of creating.
