Join us for a riveting conversation on Pagecast as Sewela Langeni sits down with Iris Mwanza to explore her gripping debut novel, The Lion's Den. This legal thriller set in Zambia's turbulent political landscape tackles themes of justice, gender equality, and systemic oppression. More about the book: Rookie lawyer Grace Zulu does not give up easily. She escaped an arranged marriage to put herself through university. Now she's got her first case. Her client is young Willbess ‘Bessy' Mulenga, who has been arrested for offences ‘against nature'. Bessy works in a men-only bar, loves to dance, to wear dresses and live freely. But in 1990s Zambia, following your own identity can get you beaten, jailed or even worse. Grace is determined to get Bessy out of custody. Then her terrified, bruised client goes missing without a trace. She knows something bad has happened and that someone is trying to cover it up. Along with the most unlikely group of allies, Grace must take on powerful enemies at the highest levels – even risk her own safety – to get to the truth. The whole truth. A debut novel that soars with passion and humanity, The Lions' Den is a moving story of prejudice, corruption, injustice, courage and solidarity. It shows us that no cause is ever a lost one. Hear from Robin Millington, CEO of Planet Tracker, as we discuss how and why businesses should be thinking about their dependencies and impacts on nature. Sustainability is a complex topic, and for a long time, climate has been at the heart of discussion. Other challenges like pollution and biodiversity loss have often been sidelined. Recently however, following the work of the TNFD and others, these issues have risen up the corporate agenda, within the wider context of our impact and dependency on nature. Throughout her career, this guest has highlighted the importance of integrating nature into mainstream business. In this episode, we'll explore: The urgent need to manage climate and nature risks holistically; How our failure to value natural capital correctly is pressurizing the global food system and other key sectors; And the role that financial markets have in creating a nature-positive future. Hello, and welcome to episode 102 of the Financial Crime Weekly Podcast, I'm Chris Kirkbride. It has been a remarkably busy week this week. While the sanctions news was a limited, further action has been taken by the US against those facilitating Iranian sanctions evasion, but the main content this week comes in the form of bribery and market abuse news. In fact, there has been a noticeable trend over recent weeks in the number of stories relating to bribery and market abuse. Why? Maybe it's the cost of living, but that argument falls down when you think of the wealth of some of the individuals concerned. Maybe it's because they might be seen, wrongly in my view, as victimless crime. At least that used to be the view in relation to market abuse. Anyway, there is a load of news from those areas. In other news, the Financial Action Task Force has updated on the implementation of recommendation 15 by all FATF members and materially important virtual asset service providers. What else? Well, there's a big report from Europol and the usual round-up of cyber-attack news. Let's crack on. As usual, I have linked the main stories flagged in the podcast in the description. This week, I'm especially honored to welcome Dimitar Tsotsorkov, Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Asarel-Medet, the largest and most advanced copper mining and processing company in Bulgaria. Dimitar is the G2 family leader of the Tsotsorkov family, former Chairman of the Management Board of the family's operating business, and active philanthropist through the “Lachezar Tsotsorkov” Foundation, which he established in honor of his father, who was the G1 wealth creator of the family. Dimitar was recognized as a Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) Pioneer for Digital Transformation of the United Nations Global Compact Sustainable (UNGC) development initiative and became the first manager of a mining company to win the prestigious award in 2022. As a G2 family leader of a highly enterprising family, Dimitar is carrying forward his father's great legacy and laying the foundations on which his family can continue to flourish in the future. He recounts the rich history of his family and shares his personal journey as a business owner and family leader, tapping into the captivating stories of his family's entrepreneurial achievements over the past 100+ years. Dimitar and his family are firm believers in the importance of a strong culture, and they even undertook a thoughtful and systematic process to craft and formalize their “family brand”. Dimitar talks about this exercise and sheds light on the reasons why a family brand is important in his view and how he and his fellow family members arrived at their family brand. The Tsotsorkov family also made a concerted effort to distill and formulate the shared values of their family – or as they call them, their “values in action”. Dimitar reflects on the importance of values and describes how they went about defining theirs, and what they mean to everyone in his family. Throughout these important and systematic undertakings, Dimitar and his family identified a number of helpful practical tools, such as rituals and life milestones, which they deployed with the entire family to build their brand and establish the family culture. Dimitar describes the importance of these tools and how he uses them with his family members. Another pillar of his family culture is continuous learning and development, and to achieve that goal, Dimitar has instituted individual development plans (IDPs) for all family members. He describes this practice and how it is working for his family, not only with the younger G3 rising-gen members but also with the older “now” generations. Don't miss this exceptional conversation with one of the most enterprising, forward-thinking, and generous multigenerational enterprise families within the FOX community.

Yannick Bolloré, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, Havas Group, and Chairman of the Supervisory Board, Vivendi is Ben's very special guest for the final episode of Season Two. Exploring the outlook in media for 2024 and discussing how media and entertainment converge in culture to create meaningful moments highlights of this fascinating conversation include:· On how global versus local plays a role for brands when creating media that matters, Yannick Bollore underlined when he became CEO of Havas in 2013, “we were living in a world of happy globalization” with much of the world sharing the same values, beliefs, and it was very easy to have a global campaign for brands Since then we have seen the rise of nationalism, war in Europe and the catastrophic situation in the Middle East. “Today, it's becoming increasingly difficult to talk about happy globalization and for brands, we need to adapt to this new reality. To have a global network with very strong local agencies is becoming more and more important.” · Today you cannot just pay for people attention. You have to earn it. At Havas, we have gone through a huge shift in our strategic plan. First, creating the Together strategy, with all talent in the group gathered in one place we call the Villages. Creative people working together with the media. A holistic approach to content and advertising. · The role of culture to earn attention is key...Brands need to become cultural brands to stay relevant to their consumers or to become relevant to their consumers or prospects. · Entertainment, Social Commerce and AI three key trends for the year ahead. On AI Yannick says: “It's creating a structural change for our industry. I believe AI will, in terms of transformation, be as important as the revolution in the eighties or the digital revolution from 2000-2010. This is why we have been investing a lot in terms of money, resources, people. I think it's important that communications group become a best in class to support their clients in their AI transformation.“ · On the importance of respect, diversity and sustainability brands need to go through a strong transformation, not just to bring a great product at an affordable price, but to do more. “I believe in meaningfulness. I believe in diversity. Three brands out of four can disappear today.* No one would notice or care. When people are shopping today, they want to wear brands, they want to buy products that are creating something bigger than themselves.” * Havas' proprietary Meaningful BrandsTM Survey · The media Yannick turns to when looking to get inspired? A prominent Russian economist has issued a warning to investors about the onset of an extensive global financial crisis. Alexander Razuvaev, who serves on Russia's Supervisory Board of the Guild of Financial Analysts and Risk Managers, has expressed concerns about a significant impending crisis. He believes this could be triggered by an event like World War 3 or the disintegration of the European Union and its currency, the Euro. He further speculated that nations such as Italy and Spain might abandon the EU and reissue their currencies in place of the Euro.Speaking to Moscow's Izvestia News, Razuvaev stated, “Actually, it's a bankruptcy, a banking crisis, or perhaps another significant event. These signs are indicative of an upcoming crisis, which will undoubtedly have a global impact.” He forecasts that a major crisis would cause a dip in energy prices while the value of precious metals would experience a surge. For Russian investors, he advises a strategic shift in their investment portfolios, moving away from stocks and bonds. He advocates for a portfolio composition with a heavy emphasis on tangible assets, suggesting 75% be allocated to gold, silver, and bitcoin, while the remaining 25% should be invested in oil company stocks.Rick Wiles, Doc Burkhart. Leica was kind enough to invite me out to their annual Celebration Of Photography event which welcomes photographers from around the world to a three day event to celebrate photography which culminates with the Leica Oskar Barnack award show which awards two photographers with a new Leica Camera and cash prize. While I was in Germany I was given the opportunity to interview Dr. Andreas Kaufmann who in 2004 invested in Leica Camera and remains the majority share holder through his investment firm ACM. Andreas currently serves as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of Leica Camera AG and has been instrumental in growing the Leica brand into what is today. I was also given the opportunity to interview Stefan Daniel who is the executive vice president of technology and operations at Leica Camera. Stefan has been with Leica Camera for over 40 years having started as an apprentice at age 16 and is well known for being the product planner on the M7 camera. Yesterday I was given the opportunity to tour the Leica Camera factory and can say first hand that the skill and craftsmanship that goes into making a Leica Camera is second to none so getting the opportunity to speak with both Andreas and Stefan was a real honor! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: EA Poland 2023 - the first update, published by EA Poland on August 15, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. TL;DR: EA Poland is active and growing. Our aim is to build and maintain a supportive and empowering community that enables individuals to plan their next steps to make a positive impact. We want to achieve this by focusing on three areas: Community Building, Career Planning, and Project Incubation. Introduction At the beginning of June we had our first Polish EAGx, in Warsaw. We think this is a good opportunity to introduce EA Poland. Before we start, we would like to mention that this post's structure was inspired by EA Estonia's post and was prepared with the support of ChatGPT and DeepL/Writer. Quick Facts About Poland Located in Central Europe, Poland has a population of ~38 million and has been classified by the World Bank as a high-income country since 2009. Additionally, there are up to 21 million Polish people living across the world. We love potatoes, onions, and dumplings with onions and potatoes. Quick Facts About EA Poland The first EA meetup we know of took place in 2014, and the first group was established in Cracow, in 2015. In 2018, the Polish Foundation for Effective Altruism (FEA) was registered. We have members from all over Poland: Cracow, Warsaw, Wroclaw, Poznan, Gdansk, Katowice, Lodz... Current status EA Poland in numbers: 3 employees, with a total of 1.5 FTE (full-time equivalents; funded by the EA Infrastructure Fund) ~30 volunteers (incl. group organisers) ~60 highly-engaged EAs - HEAs (incl. most of the volunteers) 178 members registered on our community Slack Of these, ~70 users are active on a weekly basis (figure 2) 336 newsletter subscribers Social media: 2,700 Facebook fanpage followers 1,100 Facebook group members 515 Instagram followers 893 Linkedin followers 211 YouTube subscribers 3 local groups (Warsaw, Cracow, Wroclaw) 1 active university group (University of Warsaw) and 1 university group expected to start in 2023/2024 (AGH in Cracow) An online book club (we plan to publish a separate forum post about it) 2 AI Safety Groups (on-line): technical and governance 2 EA-aligned organisations (Otwarte Klatki [Anima International Poland] and Optimum Pareto Foundation) What we did last year (June 2022 - June 2023) Organisational Structure and Operations Over the course of the past year, we channelled a lot of effort into strengthening our organisational structure and operational capacity. This includes establishing basic processes and procedures in areas such as IT, finance, and legal; reintroducing Asana for task management; and revitalising our social media and newsletter. We collectively agreed to form an executive board where two Co-Directors represent FEA for a period of two years. After this period, re-election of the Co-Directors requires approval, granted by the Active Members via a vote. To evaluate and support the work of the Co-Directors, we have set up a Supervisory Board consisting of five HEAs, elected by the Active Members (employees, volunteers, interns, groups organisers, projects coordinators). Mission, Vision, and Strategy In 2022, we defined our strategy through a workshop and multiple group discussions. In November 2023, we will revise it and determine an action plan for the next two years. We intend to write a separate post on this topic. Organisational Culture Creating a safe and inclusive environment is a priority for EA Poland. We developed a Code of Conduct through workshops, and introduced the Safety Person role to ensure the well-being and comfort of all community members. We also conducted a comprehensive survey to examine our organisational culture, with the aim of continuous improvement and fostering a supportive community. The survey, consisting of 72 questions, had an average score of 3.55 on a s...

Join America's Roundtable (https://americasrt.com/) Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a conversation with Steve H. Hanke, a top economist and leading monetarist. Dr. Steve Hanke provides an analysis of midterm elections, an update on America's economy, and raises concerns about the prolonged Ukraine - Russia conflict as the West's economic sanctions fail to bring an end to the war on the European continent. Dr. Hanke has been a strong critic of corruption in Ukraine and recent reports that he highlights raise red flags that US weapons are making its way to the black market. On America's Roundtable, principled leaders have called for greater oversight on how US taxpayer aid is being used in Ukraine and within NATO's Eastern European countries mired in corruption. Professor Hanke also discusses the Misery Index, and "why it is essential for policy-makers to have a read of their constituents' well-being, as viewed through the lens of economic statistics." Report: Hanke's 2021 Misery Index: Who's Miserable and Who's Happy? (https://www.nationalreview.com/2022/03/hankes-2021-misery-index-whos-miserable-and-whos-happy/) Hanke's Annual Misery Index (HAMI). What is it — and how should we conceive of man's well-being? The human condition lies on a vast spectrum between “miserable” and “happy.” In the economic sphere, misery tends to flow from high inflation, steep borrowing costs, and unemployment. The surefire way to mitigate that misery is through economic growth. Comparing countries' metrics can tell us a lot about where in the world people are sad or happy. HAMI gives us the answers. My version of the misery index is the sum of the year-end unemployment, inflation, and bank-lending rates, minus the annual percentage change in real GDP per capita. Higher readings on the first three elements are “bad” and make people more miserable. These “bads” are offset by a “good” (real GDP per capita growth), which is subtracted from the sum of the bads to yield a HAMI score. Bio: Dr. Steve H. Hanke Steve H. Join America's Roundtable Radio co-hosts Natasha Srdoc and Joel Anand Samy in a recent conversation with Steve H. Hanke, a professor of applied economics and founder and co-director of the Institute for Applied Economics, Global Health, and the Study of Business Enterprise at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Steve Hanke is a leading world expert on currency boards, measuring and stopping hyperinflation, privatization, currency and commodity trading, water resource economics, and other topics. The conversation with Professor Hanke will provide listeners with an update on the U.S. economy and the impact of inflation and how government policies affect families and the private sector, specifically small and medium size businesses. Will the Fed's interest rate hikes lead to a soft-landing or a major recession in 2023? On America's Roundtable Radio, Professor Hanke will highlight his economic predictions for 2023. His predictions for 2022 on the inflation rate was right on target, a warning he and his colleague John Greenwood relayed through a commentary in The Wall Street Journal a year ago titled "Too Much Money Portends High Inflation — The Fed should pay attention to Milton Friedman's wisdom. (https://www.wsj.com/articles/money-supply-inflation-friedman-biden-federal-reserve-11626816746)" How Effective are Sanctions on Russia? The discussion will also examine U.S. and European Union sanctions imposed on Russia. This past week we found out that with energy prices up, Moscow is reaping significant financial gains through the sale of oil and gas. A recent Wall Street Journal report stated that through July 2022, Moscow has totaled $97 billion from oil and gas sales, earning $5.4 billion more per month than last year's monthly average. Russia is actually pumping almost as much oil into the global market as it did before prior to the conflict with Ukraine. US Assistance to Ukraine Rises to $60 Billion — While the European Union's Contribution Amounts to $10 Billion Only The Biden Administration along with Democrat and Republican members of Congress have authorized over $60 billion in US taxpayer funds to support Ukraine's military and provide assistance to Europe's NATO members. However, the EU comprised of 27 member states in Europe has only provided 10 billion euros (USD$10 billion) since the beginning of the war. As a leading world expert on currency boards, measuring and stopping hyperinflation, currency and commodity trading, Dr. Hanke will relay his thoughts on the US and Euro currencies and the currency board that he developed for a number of countries around the world. His recent commentary in The Wall Street Journal titled "Floating Exchange Rates Add to Economic Uncertainty (https://www.wsj.com/articles/exchange-rates-float-beyond-parity-dollar-euro-monetary-system-bretton-woods-agreement-inflation-currencies-11659991140)” raised important points. The discussion with Professor Hanke on Saturday morning will focus on the perils of instability which brings problems for the U.S. and Europe—and serious crises to developing nations. Importantly, the conversation will highlight the significance of advancing principled pro-growth policies for America. Recent statements by Professor Steve Hanke: (https://www.cnbc.com/2022/08/30/steve-hanke-were-going-to-have-one-whopper-of-a-recession-in-2023.html) “We will have a recession because we've had five months of zero M2 growth, money supply growth, and the Fed isn't even looking at it." "The bottom line is we're going to have stagflation — we're going to have the inflation because of this excess that's now coming into the system.” “The problem we have is that the [Fed Chair Jerome Powell] does not understand, even at this point, what the causes of inflation are and were. He's still going on about supply-side glitches. He has failed to tell us that inflation is always caused by excess growth in the money supply, turning the printing presses on.” Bio | Steve H. **Transcripts and extras for this episode can be found at realprogressives.org/macro-n-cheese-podcast.** Iceland's economy is an example of MMT working the way MMT economists say it works. It is the second smallest free-floating currency in the world. However, despite its size, conditions are dramatically different than in a country like Greece, shackled to a currency outside its control. For better or worse, Iceland has a bit of monetary sovereignty. “When you have your own currency, you can develop your economy by very smart economic decisions, domestic investments that build up the production capacity of the economy. Or you can use that currency to basically create a credit bubble, which then runs the economy to the ground.” Steve's guest, Ólafur Margeirsson, has written more than 250 articles on the Icelandic economy over the past decade and, until recently, had a unique vantage point as an alternate member of the Central Bank of Iceland's Supervisory Board. Despite Icelandic society's Nordic influences, in this episode you'll hear echoes of our past interviews with Fadhel Kaboub on the global South. With those countries it shares obstacles that arise from not producing all that they need. Its currency isn't internationally accepted, so exports must generate income in foreign currencies to pay for imported goods. Iceland relies on three main exports - aluminum, fishing, and tourism – each about a third of the gross exports. These are vulnerable to all the problems of modern economies. The aluminum smelters are owned by foreign companies, so the profits do not benefit Iceland. Poorly managing their resources resulted in over-fishing, a blight on both the environment and the livelihoods of a sector of the population. Tourism, which helped Iceland recover from the 2008 global financial crisis, is dependent on the economic health of other countries. Like the US, shadow banking has been a huge problem, but unlike the US, it's not a problem anymore. Not since 2008. There are other differences. Unlike the US, Iceland has a strong social welfare system. By saying no to austerity, it recovered from the GFC more rapidly. Instead of a standing military, Iceland has a SWAT team (of maybe 20 people?) which is the only weaponized force in Iceland. Imagine that. One more thing - shortly after the 2008 crisis they had a Debt Jubilee. “...proving the point that an economy that has its own currency can finance whatever it wants to. If it wants to finance a Debt Jubilee for the people, it can finance a Debt Jubilee for the people. Will it have economic consequences? Obviously.” … “So it goes back to the point that MMT always hammers on. If the problem is money, it's not a problem. If the problem is inflation, it is a problem. and that's something that actually I think Iceland has proven as well. Repeatedly.” Iceland is not a socialist paradise, but its story is instructive. With the clarity of his MMT perspective, Ólafur is an ideal tour guide. Ólafur Margeirsson writes about the Icelandic economy and specializes in financial instability, foreign direct investment, MMT, and real estate. Until recently he sat on the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank of Iceland as an alternate member. Currently, he is head of Global Real Estate Research at Credit Suisse. https://www.patreon.com/icelandicecon @icelandicecon on Twitter

The first set of EU Corporate Sustainability Reporting Directive (CSRD) standards would be adopted by later 2022, which means large public-interest companies with more than 500 employees in EU (that's nearly 12K companies) would have to disclose environmental and social information based on the guidelines. And EU's 'Fit for 55' refers to the EU's target of reducing net greenhouse gas emissions by at least 55% by 2030, and it will apply carbon trading to the transport sector in 2026.  Here, carbon trading means companies would have to buy emission rights above certain thresholds.  Yes, buying!  It means it is a hard dollar/euro cost item on your balance sheet.  That's why carbon visibility reporting for complex and multi-tier supply chain is a hot topic, and a digital logistics platform company like Transporean is drawing up a new era of carbon visibility partnering up with a handful of large enterprises (like Pepsico, Sipro, Trane, Evonik, Rewe, and DS Smith) to test their beta version.  I've recently sat down with Hermann Ude, Chairman of the Supervisory Board at Transporean, a former CEO at DHL Global Forwarding & Freight, who has such keen and practical insights to the matter.
