Send a textIn the last episode, we talked about when the apostles were baptized in the Holy Spirit on Pentecost in Acts chapter 2. We  then began discussing when Cornelius  and his family and friends were baptized in the Holy Spirit as recorded in Acts chapter 10. We read the entire chapter, 48 verses, in sections with short comments regarding what was recorded. We noticed that in verses 1 through 8 Cornelius is described as an Italian military man and consequently a Gentile and a devout man. These verses describe how Cornelius was addressed by an angel and told to go to Joppa and seek Peter the apostle. In the next section, verses 9-16, Peter has a vision to teach him that Gentiles are acceptable to God under the New Testament just as Jews are. In verses 17-33 we note that those Cornelius sent to seek Peter arrived to tell Peter to come to his house. At his house, Peter and Cornelius described what they were told. The record of Peter's sermon is contained in verses 34-43. In verses 44-48 we find that the Holy Spirit fell upon all those who heard the word. We discuss what Peter said. In particular the fact that God shows no partiality and accepts any who will obey Him. We discuss what Peter said in Acts 2:38 and note that even though the Holy Spirit fell on those in Cornelius' house, they were still commanded to be baptized in water, the name of the Lord. We have seen two examples of the baptism of the Holy Spirit and we believe these are the only ones in the New Testament except the special occasion when the Holy Spirit descended upon Jesus in Marl 1:10. In the next episode, we will begin looking at the gifts of the Holy Spirit and the miracles related to that. Take about 30-minutes to listen in on our discussion. Have your Bible handy so you can verify what we are saying. There is a transcript of this Buzzsprout episode provided for your convenience.

Want to reach out to us? Want to leave a comment or review? Want to give us a suggestion or berate Anthony? Send us a text by clicking this link!Start with a simple truth: remembering death can make your life burn brighter. We open Day Two of Lent by reading the daily Mass texts—Hezekiah's plea in Isaiah 38 and the Centurion's daring humility in Matthew 8—and let their honesty shape how we face fear, illness, and the limits we'd rather ignore. Those passages become the doorway into Divine Intimacy's memento mori: not a fixation on endings, but a clear-eyed way to live ready, lamp lit, heart unlocked to grace. From there, we lean into the hard question many believers carry: how do you love God's will when it hurts, and how do you prepare your family for a faith that will be tested? Drawing on John of the Cross, we explore the startling idea of “dying of love,” where a lifetime of small surrenders ripens into a final yes. Francis de Sales' image of becoming breadworthy through tribulation gives us language for real pain without losing hope. We talk frankly about anxiety as a spouse and parent, the ache that comes from wounds inside the Church, and why fidelity matters even when trust is strained. This conversation stays practical. We suggest anchoring Lent with the Sorrowful Mysteries, walking the Stations of the Cross, and reading Scripture so often that its cadence steadies you. We won't shield our kids or converts from the truth; we'll form them to expect trials and to meet them with courage rooted in sacrament, prayer, and community. If you're seeking a Lent that is more than good intentions—one that shapes how you love, suffer, and lead at home—this is for you.If this resonated, share it with someone who needs courage today, subscribe for the full Lent series, and leave a review with the one practice that grounds your heart right now. This lecture delves into the narrative found in Matthew chapter 8, where the focus is on the inclusive nature of Jesus' ministry as he performs three significant healings. The speaker, Leif, sets the stage by reflecting on personal anecdotes and communal experiences, emphasizing the importance of vulnerability and honesty as they explore themes of ostracization, power dynamics, and the unseen within the community.Beginning with a humorous reflection on the challenges of public speaking and personal experiences that evoke frustration, Leif introduces a critical examination of the passage following the Sermon on the Mount. He situates the healing stories of a leper, a centurion, and Peter's mother-in-law as thematic rather than chronological, arguing that they illuminate the essence of the Kingdom of God, where belonging is paramount and society's margins become the focal point of divine attention. The first story involves a man with leprosy, a poignant representation of social ostracism. Leif articulates that the leper's request for healing transcends mere physical ailment; it is a plea for restoration to community and worship, reflecting the deep isolation experienced due to societal norms around cleanliness. He expounds on the profound nature of Jesus' response—touching the leper, thereby defying cultural taboos and initiating an immediate restoration that symbolizes the Kingdom's inclusivity. This moment is a call to recognize those who feel marginalized today and encourages the audience to consider who in their lives may feel unwelcomed or alienated.Transitioning to the centurion's story, Leif addresses the dichotomy between power and humility. The centurion, a figure of authority, approaches Jesus not with demand, but in a posture of submission and faith. This interaction not only highlights Jesus' ability to heal from a distance but also serves as an indictment of the oppressive systems that can exist within societal hierarchies. Leif underscores that the centurion's faith is unmatched among the Israelites, challenging the audience to reconsider their perceptions of faith and authority, and to engage with the transformative potential of the Kingdom that invites everyone, regardless of societal status, to humble themselves before Jesus. The final healing, that of Peter's mother-in-law, epitomizes how Jesus sees and values those who are often overlooked. Leif reflects on how her healing goes beyond personal restoration; it leads to her immediate service, indicating that true restoration in the Kingdom also cultivates a desire to serve others. This narrative invites listeners to reflect on the often-unnoticed contributions of those around them, urging a recognition of the quiet but vital roles played by individuals within the church and society.Leif ties these stories together through the lens of practical application, suggesting ways attendees can embody the inclusive nature of the Kingdom in their own lives. By intentionally noticing and seeking to include marginalized individuals, inviting those with questions into dialogue, and valuing the contributions of the unseen, the community is encouraged to replicate Jesus' ministry of bringing healing and inclusivity where it is often least expected. Finally, he emphasizes the necessity for community members to be enterprising in their faith practices—being interruptible, actively listening to voices on the fringes, and widening their circles of engagement to ensure everyone feels seen and valued. The lecture concludes by calling for prayer and reflection on the community's role in carrying forth the Kingdom's work, ultimately inviting them into a partnership with Christ in fostering a space where love and belonging prevail.

Fr. Matthias Shehad continues his Bible study on the harmony of the Gospels by comparing The Sermon on the Mount in Matthew with the shorter version in Luke. He explores the Beatitudes variations and teachings on loving enemies, forgiveness, mercy, and the characteristics of true discipleship. Fr. Matthias highlights lessons from biblical stories like the healing of the Centurion's servant, emphasizing faith and the authority of Christ. The discussion includes reflections on miracles, spiritual growth, and the importance of daily commitment to God beyond witnessing wonders. Fr. Matthias also examines John the Baptist's role, his disciples' questions about Jesus as the Messiah, and Jesus' response revealing his fulfillment of messianic prophecy. Throughout, he underscores the need for faith expressed in action and perseverance amid spiritual challenges. This teaching blends scriptural comparison, spiritual insight, and practical application for Christian living. In reflecting on the death and burial of Jesus in Luke 23, we see a profound contrast between those who viewed the crucifixion as a mere "spectacle" and those who responded with genuine faithfulness and sacrifice. We recognize that while the crowds were drawn to the drama of the event, the Centurion recognized Jesus' innocence, and the faithful women remained present even when the world seemed to have won. We understand that Joseph of Arimathea's gift of a costly tomb serves as a model for how we can offer our best to the Lord, even in moments of perceived defeat. Ultimately, we are challenged to move beyond the search for spiritual "adrenaline rushes" and "cosplay" and instead embrace the quiet, consistent devotion of those who stayed by Jesus' side until the very end, trusting that the stillness of the Sabbath is not the conclusion of the story.Shameless plug: here's a link to Method(ist) to the Madness, our new, hopefully entertaining podcast about church history. - https://methodisttothemadness.buzzsprout.com/Join us for our daily reflections with Andy. When Our Lord heals both the leper and the Centurion's servant. He awards both men for their faith, humility, and submission to His will. The account of these miracles of Christ are united in these men overcoming their discouragement and looking to Our Lord with both faith and a willingness to submit to God's will. Every person has set backs. Every person gets discouraged. But ultimately, uniting our will with God's, as trying as that can be at times, is the true path to sanctity. He will never abandon us.

A weight of faith settles as Leon du Preez unlocks the prayer life that does not beg, it receives. Gates lift, identity rises, and “beholding” becomes the doorway to transformation, not as a future promise but as present reality. From revelation to worship, the room turns into a healing altar, miracles begin to stack, and prophetic words cut through shame, fear, and death with surgical precision. This finale is a call to see Christ rightly, to discover what has always been in you, and to step out by faith until heaven is visible on earth.

Heaven is not a distant destination, it is a present reality meant to manifest through God's people. This session cuts through survival Christianity and calls you into identity: made in His image, unveiled, transformed, already holy, already righteous, already anointed. Faith becomes the language that releases heaven into earthly places, not through striving, but through beholding, renewing the mind, and stepping out of the flesh. From miracles and bold access at the throne of grace, to fasting as a revelation tool and detours redeemed for calling, the message lands with one question from the Lord: who will go. Stand, agree, and let the river flow through you.

Leon du Preez calls the church back to yieldedness, exposing hype, performance, and self-strength as counterfeit power, then opens Scripture to show how God marks a life through brokenness, submission, and a circumcised heart. Jacob's “wrestling” is reframed as weeping surrender, where blessing flows only when the outer man breaks and the heart aligns. The message confronts offense, comfort, and spiritual immaturity, urging believers to stay planted, heal, and learn God's ways through sensitivity in prayer. Wisdom becomes more than knowledge, it becomes discernment that acts, refusing the simplicity that produces no impact. The night crescendos into prophetic ministry, healing, vindication, and fresh impartation, calling hearts into rest, maturity, and a life God can trust.

Leon du Preez exposes the old covenant myth of “open heavens” and calls the church back to new covenant reality, where believers carry atmosphere and heaven remains accessible. From Elisha's confrontation with dishonor to the command to dig ditches for unseen provision, revelation tightens into a prophetic charge: honor activates sight, capacity pulls increase, and prosperity becomes a weapon that confuses the enemy. The night closes with worship and personal prophecy that anchors the message in real lives, real doors, and real breakthrough. Open your heart, lift your eyes, and step into the blessing God releases without apology.

Hosted on Acast. “Go; your son will live.” With these simple words, Jesus demonstrates that His power is not bound by geography or proximity. In this episode of The Magnificent 37, we explore two profound instances where the Lord heals from a distance: the Official's Son in John 4 and the Centurion's Servant in Luke 7. In both cases, desperate men seek Jesus, yet they learn that He does not need to be physically present to effect a cure. These signs show who Jesus is and that His Word and authority alone bridge the gap between life and death.  The Rev. Burnell Eckardt, pastor emeritus and editor-in-chief of Gottesdienst: the Journal of Lutheran Liturgy, joins the Rev. Dr. Phil Booe to study John 4:46–54 and Luke 7:1–10.  Thy Strong Word kicks off the new year by dedicating our time to study "The Magnificent 37: The Miracles of Jesus." Christ didn't just speak the Word; He demonstrated it with power. From the quiet intimacy of water turning to wine at Cana to the earth-shaking reality of the empty tomb, the Gospels record thirty-seven distinct moments where Jesus suspended the laws of nature to reveal the power of his grace. This isn't just a list of "neat tricks" from history. It is a systematic walkthrough of how God breaks into our broken world to fix it. Why did Jesus curse a fig tree? Why did He need mud to heal a blind man? What does the coin in the fish's mouth teach us about being citizens of heaven and earth?  Host, Pastor Phil Booe and a lineup of guest pastors will take you through each event, verse by verse. We'll move past the Sunday School summary and get into the meat of the text, including the Old Testament connections, the cultural context, and the immediate comfort these signs bring to your life today.   Thy Strong Word, hosted by Rev. Dr. Phil Booe, pastor of St. John Lutheran Church of Luverne, MN, reveals the light of our salvation in Christ through study of God's Word, breaking our darkness with His redeeming light. Each weekday, two pastors fix our eyes on Jesus by considering Holy Scripture, verse by verse, in order to be strengthened in the Word and be equipped to faithfully serve in our daily vocations. Having introduced Jesus' genealogy, the miraculous birth, the magi's visit and the start of Jesus's ministry in chapters 1-4, Matthew told us about Jesus' "Sermon on the Mount." We are now at chapter 8 where Jesus performs two acts of healing. Garth Heckman The David Alliance TDAgiantSlayer@Gmail.com    A few times I will get an email about all the things I miss in a podcast over a topic or a portion of scripture… Look I only get 7 minutes before you lose your attention… so focus on the seven minutes… and don't get distracted. It's Gods word, focus on that and not on what is not being said…and that's where we are going today!    Matthew 14:22 Immediately after this, Jesus insisted that his disciples get back into the boat and cross to the other side of the lake, while he sent the people home. 23 After sending them home, he went up into the hills by himself to pray. Night fell while he was there alone. 24 Meanwhile, the disciples were in trouble far away from land, for a strong wind had risen, and they were fighting heavy waves. 25 About three o'clock in the morning Jesus came toward them, walking on the water. 26 When the disciples saw him walking on the water, they were terrified. In their fear, they cried out, “It's a ghost!” 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once. “Don't be afraid,” he said. “Take courage. I am here!” 28 Then Peter called to him, “Lord, if it's really you, tell me to come to you, walking on the water.” 29 “Yes, come,” Jesus said. So Peter went over the side of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind and the waves, he was terrified and began to sink. “Save me, Lord!” he shouted. 31 Jesus immediately reached out and grabbed him. “You have so little faith,” Jesus said. “Why did you doubt me?” 32 When they climbed back into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Then the disciples worshiped him. “You really are the Son of God!” they exclaimed.   PETER DID NOT SAY “LORD LET ME WALK ON WATER” HE SAID COMMAND ME TO WALK ON WATER…. Touch the heavens, speak from the throne of God and make it happen by your words and your words alone.      Peter doesn't know much… but at this point he does know one thing: If Jesus commands it- it will happen. If he speaks the word- it will fulfill its purpose. **THIS IS WHY HE NEEDED TO HEAR JESUS SPEAK THE WORD.        It is important to note that Matthew also includes several "summary verses" (e.g., Matthew 4:23, 14:14) stating that Jesus healed "many" or "all" who came to Him, implying the actual number of miracles was in the hundreds or thousands. However, the specific, detailed accounts recorded up to Matthew 14:28 are as follows:     Cleansing a Leper (Matt. 8:1–4) Jesus commands be healed Healing the Centurion's Servant (Matt. 8:5–13) You don't need to come just say the word Healing Peter's Mother-in-Law (Matt. 8:14–15) Casting out demons with his command Calming the Storm at Sea (Matt. 8:23–27) He commands it to be calm Casting Demons into a Herd of Pigs (The Gadarene Demoniacs) (Matt. 8:28–34) He commands them into the pigs Healing a Paralytic (Matt. 9:1–8 Speaks take up your Matt and walk Healing the Woman with the Issue of Blood (Matt. 9:20–22) Raising Jairus' Daughter from the Dead (Matt. 9:18–26) 10.Healing Two Blind Men (Matt. 9:27–31) 11.Healing a Mute Demoniac (Matt. 9:32–34) 12.Healing the Man with a Withered Hand (Matt. 12:9–14) He tells him to hold out his hand 13.Healing a Blind and Mute Demoniac (Matt. 12:22) 14.Feeding the 5,000 (Matt. 14:13–21) Jesus commands the disciples you feed them.   **THIS WAS THE SET UP FOR PETER! He knew that all authority was subject to his voice, his words, his authority. Nature, Supernatural and Physical.  15.Jesus Walking on the Water (Matt. 14:25–27) 16. Peter walking on Water     Things we learn: Peter did not jump out of the boat on emotion… any emotion he felt would have been fear, uncertainty in the storm.

HEADLINE: GAIUS & GERMANICUS IN LONDINIUM 91 AD: Reclaiming James I as the True Founding Father. Preparing to see a mock battle staged by centurions in Londinium, Gaius and Germanicus discuss the unappreciated legacy of James I (James VI of Scotland), asserting he is the true founding father of the United States. James I, an intellectual king who took the throne in 1603, faced challenges from the powerful Spanish Empire over territorial claims in the New World. When the Spanish ambassador complained about incursions near Chesapeake Bay, James I gave an "opaquely professional" response, disclaiming crown involvement and calling it "private business." This non-committal stance prevented war and allowed colonization to proceed. By 1618, he solidified this by granting a charter to the struggling Virginia colony. His light management established self-governance, setting the course for both modern Britain and the United States. 1901 OLD HOUSE Retry

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 11, 2025 28:30

In light of a series of miracles in our readings for today, Fr. Mike focuses on our Lord's compassion and our call to be merciful, as he is. He emphasizes the beauty of God's mercy and his offering of it despite our unworthiness. He also strikes a balance between the goodness of humanity as God's creation and our brokenness due to original sin. Today's readings are Luke 6-8 and Proverbs 26:1-3.
