For this special International Women's Day episode, we are joined by Cherie Blair, CBE KC, a distinguished barrister and human rights lawyer. A passionate advocate for women's rights, Cherie is a true champion for gender equality. In this episode we discuss with her the impactful work of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, which she founded in 2008. The Foundation empowers women entrepreneurs in low and middle-income countries by providing skills, technology, and financial resources. They have just published a new report that highlights how digital technologies are a double-edged sword for women entrepreneurs in low and middle-income countries. While providing invaluable new ways of growing a business, the rise in online sexual harassment and misogyny aimed at female entrepreneurs is undermining the benefits of the technological revolution. The wide-ranging conversation explores the importance of economic gender justice and how empowering women can lead to broader societal benefits.

Welcoming Dhivya O'Connor's, CEO of the Cherie Blair Foundation and host and founder of The Charity CEO Podcast Dhivya grew up in India but at the age of 18, Dhivya moved to the UK for her studies. Initially planning to return to India after completing her education, she found herself drawn to the opportunities that the UK offered. For a decade, Dhivya built a successful career in the private sector, holding various strategy, business development, and leadership roles at companies such as GE Capital, Lloyds Bank, and OctopusTravel (now part of Expedia Group). However, the call to make a more direct impact on society led Dhivya to transition into the charity sector. Over the past 24 years, she has held several senior leadership positions, including CEO roles at United World Schools, the Chartered Institute of Fundraising, and Children with Cancer UK. Her diverse experience, coupled with her innate drive to create equitable opportunities for women and girls, made her the perfect fit for her current role as CEO of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. Founded by Cherie Blair in 2008, the Foundation aims to empower women entrepreneurs in low-income countries through training, research, and ecosystem collaboration. Under Dhivya's leadership, the organisation continues to address the challenges faced by women entrepreneurs, particularly in accessing finance and education. The Foundation's work emphasises the importance of amplifying the voices of women entrepreneurs and creating opportunities for them to thrive. Dhivya's commitment to the charity sector extends beyond her day job. She serves as a Board Member of Book Aid International and is on the Steering Committee of Groundbreakers, a network promoting women leaders in the voluntary sector. She has also volunteered with NGOs in India, South Africa, and Cambodia, bringing her expertise and passion to various causes around the world. In August 2020, while on maternity leave with her second child, Dhivya launched "The Charity CEO Podcast." This chart-topping show, which now boasts over 20,000 listeners across 55 countries, aims to inspire, inform, and deliver practical insights on the challenges facing charity leaders today. Through candid and meaningful conversations, Dhivya delves deep into issues relevant to leaders across the sector and those who care about the important work of charities and non-profit organisations. Dhivya shares her diverse experiences in both the private and charity sectors, combined with her personal understanding of the challenges faced by women in developing countries. Dhivya's is uniquely positions her to lead the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women now and in the future.

Social Impact Pioneer Elizabeth Wells talks about women entrepreneurs and digital inclusion. Elizabeth is currently the Head of Entrepreneurship at the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. The Foundation is on a mission to eliminate barriers to entrepreneurship for women, helping to enable global economic gender justice. Elizabeth's work within the organisation is focused on unlocking the power of digital for women's entrepreneurship. With 10 years of experience working on women's economic empowerment, economic development, and governance programmes, Elizabeth shares why digital exclusion is particularly pronounced for women – from access to mobile handsets, digital connectivity, low digital literacy and the high associated costs. Elizabeth reveals the potential of integrating digital tools in business operations for women. Whether it's mobile money and online transaction systems, that helps to provide financial autonomy; through to book-keeping and client management that enhances business efficiency. Elizabeth is passionate about working in partnership with private and public sector organisations and has delivered this in some 12 different countries. Her experience includes working with partners like Qualcomm, DHL Express, FCDO and USAID. Together we talk about some of the partnering opportunities that can better serve female entrepreneurs. Elizabeth says – “There is a lot of excitement around AI. Digital inclusion is critical to business success and, if women are digitally excluded - whether it's because of poor connectivity or infrastructure, high cost of data or lack of mobile phone ownership or access – women will never achieve their potential in business.” Please find here the links to the reports: • GSMA Mobile Gender Gap Report 2023: https://www.gsma.com/mobilefordevelopment/programme/connected-women/the-mobile-gender-gap-report-2023/ • Cherie Blair Foundation for Women Research Reports: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/research/2023-audit/ • Bridging the Divide: Women, Tech and Business Success: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/research/covid19-research/ • Cherie Blair Foundation website: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/ • Cherie Blair Programmes: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/programmes/ • Cherie Blair HerVenture: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/programmes/herventure/ • Cherie Blair Mentoring: https://cherieblairfoundation.org/what-we-do/programmes/mentoring/

"God does not dish out talent based on race, based on gender. He's not going to say just because you are a woman, all you can do is sing and all you can do is be a make-up artist; because you are a man, the talent He's going to give you is biochemistry and chemical engineering or something. So, a woman can be a mathematician; a man can be a chef, can be a make-up artist, can be whatever you want. So, never allow another human being tell you what you can or can't do because they aren't God." - Fadé Ogunro, Founder & CEO, Bookings Africa. In 2019, Fadé Ogunro, a multitalented creative who has boldly lived her life exploring her curiosities across media, arts and entertainment, segued into another sector entirely, technology, and launched her latest venture, Bookings Africa – a pan-African on-demand digital marketplace that allows professionals and service providers from Nigeria, Kenya, and South Africa to sell their services and skills online. What is particularly curious about Bookings Africa is that the name came to Fadé in a bizarre dream. Curiously, how did Bookings Africa move from a bizarre dream to a platform that now has over 20,000 service providers, clients and partners combined? On this episode, Part 1, you will hear Fadé talk about her defining childhood experiences and how they shaped who she's become today, including her entrepreneurship mindset. Fadé will also talk about taking a break from her work at Google in the UK and starting a new life in Nigeria in 2010. Fadé is also the Co-founder of Film Factory, a multi-award winning video production company she started together with her brother, Sesan Ogunro, in 2011. Most recently, Fadé is the Africa Chair for the Cherie Blair Foundation. She was also recognised by South Africa's Tropics Magazine in their African Doers Power List 2021 as one of the 500 most influential Africans in the world. #FadéOgunro #BookingsAfrica #FilmFactory #OriginsAfrica #OriginsAfricaPodcast *** 1-2-1 Newsletter by Origins Africa Catch our 1-2-1 Newsletter where we share with you 1 Lesson, 2 Quotes, and 1 Question from each guest interview. With Hajar EL Haddaoui Notes In 2020, the share of foreigners working in the service industry in Switzerland was 14.5%, that is 1 in 7 employees. In that sense, the Swiss workforce is already quite diverse, but how does Switzerland react to those foreign workers? In this episode, Hajar EL Haddaoui talks not only about her challenges in entering the Swiss workforce but also about how she managed to empower women in her team to take on the leadership challenge triggering an improvement in her unit's performance. "I started in a way which is "I need to hire" without any clear vision about how I can empower women. And in the end, it wasn't the big result. Afterward, I started really to make a Diversity & Inclusion strategy. […] And in 3 years we moved from 13% to 25% in my unit." What you will learn ● Individual initiatives yield marginal results to your diversity metrics compared to the implementation of a comprehensive Diversity & Inclusion (D&I) strategy ● What four areas of focus you can work on to create this strategy ● How to create an environment to empower women within your organization ● The importance of the leadership mindset for the success of an initiative shifting away from a “She's a quota woman”-mindset to a “she brings value to the team”-mindset Tips ● Measure and compare the performance of your teams also based on their diversity ● Sponsor women in your organization ● Don't only look at the added value for the business but catch -up with the human side as well Find Hajar online LinkedIn Biography Hajar EL Haddaoui is passionate about communities working with leaders and developers to help them deliver business values through KM. The Do One Better! Podcast – Philanthropy, Sustainability and Social Entrepreneurship
We hear Cherie’s personal story, from the positive influence of her mother and grandmother, to starting out as a lawyer in the 1970s when it was still rare for women to be actively involved in the workforce, to her time living in 10 Downing Street where she was lucky enough to travel the world and meet many great women across the world. Cherie felt that there was a gap in women's economic independence — women and girls — and if they could fill that gap by giving women skills, networks and the mentoring that they needed they could really make a difference. She set up the foundation in 2008 and now have reached approximately 175,000 women and girls in over 100 countries. We hear how if women had the same opportunity to be entrepreneurs as men, global GDP could rise by about $5 trillion dollars. Helen McEachern, the Foundation’s CEO, explains why they focus on low and middle-income countries, where the lack of economic parity is particularly pronounced. We also learn how they leverage technology to remove barriers and of the invaluable role of their global online mentoring programme. Helen notes how the social norms that women face that hold them back are different in different countries and so they tailor their approach accordingly. This is a fascinating conversation for anyone who cares about gender equality and embraces the entrepreneurial spirit. The conversation airs as the world marks International Women’s Day 2021. Our 40 Minute Mentor in this episode is the brilliant Tara Lajumoke, Managing Director of FT Strategies’, the Financial Times consulting arm. After starting her career at Goldman Sachs, Tara moved in to consulting at McKinsey where she progressed to Junior Partner before taking the bold and entrepreneurial move in March 2020 to move to FTS. As you’d probably expect, it’s been a roller coaster few months for Tara, walking into a new senior role right at the beginning of a global pandemic and having to juggle this with having a young family, which is something we dive in to in this episode. Outside of work Tara uses the skills she’s learnt from Consulting to help develop the female leaders of tomorrow, working as a Business Mentor at the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women Entrepreneurs. In this episode, we dive into Tara’s story and explore how she’s been able to achieve the things she has, both from a personal and professional perspective, including: - Why Tara decided to leave McKinsey for what many would see as a riskier move and what it’s been like leading FT Strategies through a global pandemic. - The importance of education, why it’s such a big factor in Tara’s life and why it’s a huge focus for the way she’s bringing up her own children. - And we also discuss the Black Lives Matter movement and what companies and individuals can do to make a tangible difference to the cause We have had the pleasure of working with Tara for a little while and we were so excited to get her on our podcast as she is such a positive and down to earth role model. Needless to say, we loved hearing more about her career journey and how she’s managed to achieve so much in her career to date. So whether you work in consulting or you’re just in need of some inspiration from a brilliant leader, this episode is packed full of gems for you to learn from and apply to your own life and career. We'd love to hear your thoughts on this episode, so please do get in touch at james@jbmc.co.uk If you want to find out more about Tara, check out her LinkedIn profile - https://www.linkedin.com/in/tara-lajumoke-40aa29/ And if you’d like to find out more about FT Strategies, you can have a look at their website here - https://www.ftstrategies.com/

Interviews with pioneers in business and social impact - Business Fights Poverty Spotlight
Katie Hyson, Director of Thought Leadership at Business Fights Poverty interviews Helen McEachern, CEO, Cherie Blair Foundation. This week our spotlight interview meets with Helen McEachern, CEO of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. Listen to this podcast to find out the latest developments in gender equality and what businesses can do to encourage greater women’s economic empowerment and why it’s hard to keep Cherie Blair’s attention. With over 20 years’ experience working for international NGOs including Greenpeace, ActionAid UK and ActionAid International, Helen has increasingly focused her energy on the gender agenda. On leading the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women, Helen says: “We’re on a mission to change the world for women – make it more equal and economically just.” We hear Helen’s insights on important questions such as: What are men’s roles in encouraging women’s economic empowerment? How can business take action? And, what can we do when nationalistic geo-political agendas are on so many occasions moving against women’s rights? During this interview you will hear Helen’s thoughts on the future trends affecting women’s equality. Helen explores why the digital revolution and the access to information could be the greatest equaliser for women, but with 12% more men than women online; 200 million women currently excluded from mobile phone access; and predominantly men writing and creating the code behind decision making algorithms that drive the digital revolution there is a distinct risk to women’s economic empowerment if not tackled. Helen reveals what it is like working with Cherie Blair – how she has to stay on her game to keep up with the former UK Prime Minister’s wife and internationally renowned human rights barrister. And why Cherie gives such good career advice. Before wrapping with her own advice to those working on their development and impact careers: “Be open and ready to learn, try new things that aren’t necessarily in plan [and] understand what your contribution is.”
In episode two, meet Cherie Blair CBE QC, barrister, lecturer, writer and founder of the Cherie Blair Foundation for Women. Plus, news of forthcoming Women In The Law events and details of how you can get involved. Presented by barrister Sally Penni, founder and chair of Women in the Law UK.
