Today I have a special guest, Amobi Okugo. Amobi was drafted to the Philadelphia Union in 2010, which just happened to be the inaugural season for the Union. He spent 5 years in Philly and was a starter and an integral part of the team until he moved on in 2015. He then bounced around the MLS for a couple of years, before becoming a free agent and missing a whole year in 2018. He's now been back at it in Austin playing for their USL team, which is the second tier of professional soccer in the United States. I explored with Amobi what it was like playing in Philadelphia, which has some of the most loyal fans in the country. We then get into what it's like being an athlete and the challenges as well as benefits it brings. We dive into what it is like being drafted to play the sport you love, and then at the same time, we explore what it's like to then be released by a team and not know what your future holds. Amobi is very driven and has started a company called the Frugal Athlete which he hopes will be the go-to place for athletes to find resources that help them make smarter financial decisions. Amobi knows there have been too many athletes that have lost all their money, so we get into that and how he's trying to help. I think I've talked long enough, lets just get into this special episode, I think you will enjoy it. Here's my conversation with Amobi Okubo.Connect with AmobiA Frugal AthleteTwitter

The Black Mind Garden: ReMap Your Mind! Create a Life You Design
SHOW NOTES: This week, Amobi Okoye and I took the conversation to another level as we talk his experience as the youngest player ever drafted on NFL, the illness that almost killed him, and the positive mindset he has after being victorious over Autoimmune Encephalitis. How can you get up from a big fall? Highlights from the conversation: [01:30] Amobi Okoye · Autoimmune Encephalitis Survivor · Nigerian-born former American football · Youngest Player ever drafted on NFL Team · Founder of Amobi Okoye Foundation [03:12] An inspiring story to tell Amobi started schooling at a very young age, two and a half to be exact. As others say, he was young for his age. Then he moved to the US when he was 12 years old. From there, he was introduced to football which he loved since. At the age of 19, Amobi Okoye graduated college in Psychology. A star defensive end at Louisville, Amobi joined the Houston Texans in 2007. He then became the youngest player drafted in NFL history. [15:34] Rise after the fall Amobi's story is one that touches many lives! On Thanksgiving of 2014, his family organized a dinner to celebrate his remarkable recovery. It was there that he embraced all that he endured. After battling his way back from the near-fatal illness, he felt like he's a walking miracle. It made him believe God has a better plan for him. His relationship with Him spiritually became stronger. He was involved in his church more often and he believes God would not put us through something that we could not handle. After he recovered, he trained again. [15:53] The sickness no one know was coming On March 15-17, 2013, Amobi was in a medically-induced coma for three (3) months and became more coherent three (3) months later. He nearly died from brain inflammation called Autoimmune Encephalitis. To him, it felt like he was just taking a nap, not knowing he was unconscious for a total of 6 months. After waking up from the illness, he was in denial for quite a long time but accepted it later on eventually. [19:20] What's next? There was no thought to doing anything else for Amobi after he recovered – it was to go back to what he loved doing. Since officially retiring in 2019, he is focused on Amobi Okoye Foundation. It is focused on both the domestic and international divisions. The foundation aims to give hope to kids and communities by using athletics to promote academics. At the moment, his team is working on getting the website back, building the foundation, and campaigning for Autoimmune Encephalitis. He feels like it is his calling to create awareness about this illness. Amobi's victory over illness is definitely worth sharing! AKACHI OKUGO is a Sacramento treasure in my eyes. This 27-year old is a true entrepreneur. Up top is his work in basketball as the Player Development Coach of the Sacramento Kings and Assistant Coach of the Stockton Kings. He also trains hundreds of basketball players in the 2 The Hoop Training Program led by Gus Armstead. And that just scratches the surface. Okugo is also a recording artist (just dropped his second album "Never Regular" earlier this year), owns an apparel line called "Made in Sac," hosts a podcast with older brother Amobi ("Pass the Remote"), and just produced a documentary called "So What's Next."In today's episode of Experience the Buzz, Host Steve Buzzard sits back and enjoys what Okugo brings to the table. "Akachi inspires me as an entrepreneur. He represents how I believe individuals need to think in the next generation. What stands out is that he is passionate about EVERY project he is involved with as an entrepreneur. I LOVE THAT!" Our conversation hits FOUR areas: FIRST QUARTER

Professional athletes across many different sports seek financial advice from someone who is still playing a professional sport himself: Amobi Okugo. Amobi has been a veteran in the MLS and USL, and is currently playing for Austin Bold FC. A leader on the pitch who is a defender by trade, Amobi might have a bigger influence off the field. In this episode, we meet entrepreneur, lawyer and twin mum, Dinzi Amobi-Sanderson. Dinzi was born in Nigeria, to Nigerian and English parents and moved to London at the age of eight. She shares her journey across the continents, from her deep and rich African roots to her contrasting British schooling, and what brings her now to be raising her family in Australia. We talk about the perception of cultural identity and how to raise kids with their own unique sense of self, and the challenges faced by parents raising kids in a culture different from their own. Dinzi shares her experiences as a mother of twins, trying to do it all, and the stark reality of so many women who frequently feel pulled in several different directions - professionally, personally and at home. Her unabashed honesty and dry sense of humour make this conversation both entirely relatable and enlightening. Not only is this incredible woman fiercely intelligent, inspiring and prolific in her own right, she launched ULO Australia, an African homewares brand, while wrangling newborn twins. If you're curious about cultural identity, finding the balance between raising a family, working out what's important in your own family dynamic or finding ways to follow your passion while laughing off the occasional horrors of parenting, then this episode is for you!
