Alexandra MacAlpine, better known as Xan, is the founder and sole operator of The Social Herd, a creative hub she runs from home in the Central West of New South Wales. Living on a mixed farm with her husband Alex, Xan draws inspiration from her rural surroundings and Alex's insights into marketing products to farmers. With a background in design and photography from the University of Technology in Sydney, Xan initially pursued a career in marketing and communications. It wasn't until 2020 that she combined her skills and passion for photography by starting The Social Herd. Through her business, Xan collaborates with rural-based enterprises, offering strategic and creative marketing solutions. The best part for Xan is the opportunity to pick up her camera again and capture the essence of rural life. Xan's photography is authentic, showcasing everyday individuals at work, including her husband Alex on their property. She uses a mix of ground and aerial shots, often employing a drone to capture dynamic images. Her limited-edition prints, with only 25 copies each, are intended to be timeless and unique. Each day presents new opportunities for Xan to capture the rural beauty and hardworking spirit of her community. Alexandra shares how her daily life deeply influences her photography. She discusses the importance of showcasing women in agriculture, her journey from studying design and photography to finding her niche in rural landscapes, and the challenges and joys of working with livestock. She also highlights how her work promotes understanding between rural and urban communities and reflects on the evolving role of photography in telling authentic stories of the land. Her insights are a testament to the power of photography in capturing the timeless beauty of rural Australia and its hardworking people. I hope you enjoy the show! In today's episode, we revisit an old blog post from all the way back in January 2021. George III of the United Kingdom is probably the person most famously associated with porphyria. However, what isn't as often discussed is what exactly it is. Moreover, as we will introduce in today's episode, it isn't just George Hanover who was affected with the condition; his wider family seems to have suffered from it too. We don't touch on this that much in the episode, but it in fact seems to stretch back to Peter I of Bourbon in the 14th century... Sources for this episode: 1) Cussans, T. Our guest this episode is Mike Varney, guitarist and record label icon. As the young founder of Shrapnel Records, Mike Varney helped elevate the shred guitar movement as it grew and flourished through the 80s and gained niche celebrity throughout the guitar world through his labels and a column he wrote called Spotlight which highlighted local guitar heroes from around the country and world. Many of the artists Varney as worked with remain active to this day and are some of the biggest names in guitar music. Malmsteen, Gilbert, Friedman, Howe, Macalpine. The list goes on much further but when you're feeling in the mood go check out some of the releases from Shrapnel Records and later International Blues Bureau and Tone Center. You'll most certainly fulfill your guitar fix. I hope you enjoy! If you are enjoying Couch Riffs please support us at PATREON. Ideal Para Llevarte O Regalar Productos Del Podcats De Ivoox.

Use of Ransomware as a class of malware has exploded in recent years, causing millions in damages to organizations across the world. The damage isn't slowing down. On the contrary, ransomware as a tool is being adopted by a wide array of perpetrators. This includes nation-states, for cash, and to use the demand for cash to obfuscate activities like espionage and sabotage. Ransomware has become a powerful tool of asset seizure and extortion, being used by criminals, activists, and even sanctioned governments for multiple purposes including use as a weapon of war. The use of ransomware and its close cousin, wiperware, is only accelerating. In this talk, we will examine how the proliferation of ransomware brought us to this point, what it means for current global conflicts, and for the future of cyberwarfare. About the speaker: Maggie MacAlpine is the Cyber Engagement Lead for MITRE's Center for Threat Informed Defense. Prior to this appointment she served as a security strategist for Cybereason and, during her decade-long career focused on cybersecurity, Ms. MacAlpine also co-founded the DEF CON Voting Village, served as a contributing researcher on the "Security Analysis of the Estonian Internet Voting System" (in partnership with the University of Michigan), and appeared in the HBO documentary, "Kill Chain". She has discussed cybersecurity threats at numerous conferences including DEF CON, the Diana Initiative, ShmooCon Hacker Conference, PacSec Tokyo, as well as in presentations to Capitol Hill and the US Naval War College.

Jase Macalpine is known for many things. From the outside, most of us will know him for his work behind the lens as an extreme sports videographer/cinematography or maybe you know him from his popular podcast 'Gypsy Tales' where he shares the story of his travels across the globe with some of the great friends he has made long the way. For those of you on the inside who have had the opportunity to know Jase on a personal level, I'd say that you likely know him best for just being a truly good human. I feel that for all his success, it's his character & integrity he is most proud of & for good reason. From shooting snowmobile races in the North Pole, living the gypsy life in his van to sharing story in his Gold Coast studio, we spoke about it all in a conversation that brought many smiles to my face & hopefully to yours too. Ronald Beghetto discusses play and technology, as well as creativity with Elisabeth McClure and Stuart MacAlpine from LEGO Foundation. McClure and MacAlpine explain how learning through play includes cognitive and social emotional learning, and that learning experiences which include play lead to deeper learning for everyone; from babies and toddlers through adulthood. McClure and MacAlpine imagine a future where children and adults feel empowered to make and produce technology rather than just users of technology, with the agency to solve the problems in meaningful ways, to create a sustainable and more humane future. In this episode, I’m speaking with Sarah - entrepreneur, flower farmer, florist, and all around superb human being. Sarah and her husband Kenny made some huge, bold changes in their life when they realised they wanted something different. They wanted to work together, spend more time outside, and get out of the rat race. So, they uprooted their lives in Ontario and move four provinces over to Nova Scotia, starting a brand new adventure as flower farmers. Sarah tells the story of their journey, how their family and friends felt about their bold move, their early challenges, how they continue to grow and develop as entrepreneurs, and how they’ve risen to local fame as the most sought-after florists in the area.

School districts, health care organizations, cities, and towns have all been victims of ransomware. Families have lost access to photo albums of 20 years of memories and personal finances. It can be a very devastating experience. It is very scary to not be able to do your job or access your data. Now attackers are not only threatening to delete your data, but they are also threatening to leak the data. This can cause lawsuits, legal ramifications, and a huge headache for businesses large and small. What is ransomware? Ransomware is a type of malware that gets installed on your machine and it locks all of your files so you can’t access them. It spreads very quickly through your computer and you may be unable to access crucial programs and files. Often you get a message from the attackers requesting money or your data will be leaked or deleted. Craig and Joel share their expert insights on how to prevent these attacks. Craig MacAlpine is the founder and CEO of Expert Insights and a passionate security innovator with over 20 years of experience in information security and product management previously founding e-mail security company EPA Cloud. Joel Witts is a Senior Content Editor at Expert Insights covering a multitude of areas including cybersecurity. We talk about ransomware and best practices for protecting you, your family and your business. We specifically discuss ways ransomware can get in, how you can be affected, and ways to protect against it. We talk about secure gateway products, post-delivery protection, and isolation. This episode will help you figure out what solution can offer the best protection to your family and business. Show Notes: [01:38] - Ransomware is a type of malware that gets installed on your machine and it locks all of your files so you can’t access them. It spreads very quickly through your computer and may be unable to access crucial programs and files. Often you get a message from the attackers requesting money or your data will be leaked or deleted. [03:14] - With a lot of scams there is a level of emotion and urgency in the ransom component. [04:50] - Travelex was hit on New Year’s Eve this past year and it closed their operations down for a week while they had to go to a manual basis and had a 32 million dollar hit. [06:08] - Ransomware is something that affects all the way up from small to large businesses. The most common targets are healthcare, education, towns, and cities. [07:19] - The average ransom sum is increasing to over $40,000. [09:01] - There is conflicting advice on whether the company should pay the ransom or not. There is no guarantee that you will get your data back. [09:59] - Ransomware has become more of a well-known issue. Businesses are putting more measures in place to try and mitigate the risks from these threats. [11:10] - A common way for ransomware to start in an organization is through phishing attacks which are difficult to stop. Phishing is a type of email that tries to trick a user into performing an action. [13:31] - If you have got a savvy phisher whose updating that content it is really hard for the gateway systems to pick that up. [14:14] - The email may be the start of the phish, but not the method that the malware is downloaded that is just where they start the conversation. [17:03] - Secure gateway products usually do a good job stopping spam and phishing emails. Typically 98-99% of these threats will get stopped with those products. [19:03] - Someone can get remote access to your email account and forward the emails. The user isn’t even aware of what is going on in their email account. [20:04] - Post-delivery protection looks for compromised accounts and phishing emails coming from a genuine internal account emailing someone else within your business. [22:10] - If you are an IT manager or IT professional you’re asking for trouble not installing two-factor or multifactor identification. [24:17] - E-mail is your gateway to connect with someone, but the malware usually comes through the web like a download. [26:34] - Isolation could be the solution, but it will be a while before this option comes to consumers. It is a process that takes a while to get to the home-use level. [27:55] - With isolation videos or documents would be rendered for your viewing, but not actually be downloaded to your machine. [29:43] - If someone does become a victim of ransomware what are their options? [31:59] - Realistically if back-ups are not automated they are not going to happen. [34:06] - The IT manager is often a jack of all trades trying to oversee the phone systems, PC updates, and more. Back-ups are not prioritized, because if something isn’t broken then we don’t have time to fix it today. [36:13] - Over time there will be more advanced and automated systems that will block the vast majority of ransomware, but there will still be some carefully crafted scams that will be hard to catch. It will probably become less frequent, but never entirely go away. [37:07] - The scammers only have to get it right once, but the people that are protecting against it have to get it right 100% of the time. There will always be an element of human mistake because of emotions and fear. [39:46] - The attacks can be very effective because of fear and time sensitivity even if technologically we are able to stop them. [40:28] - Great advice is to not panic if you get hit by ransomware. A groundbreaking school that puts a green ethos at the centre of its learning celebrated opening in Taranaki on Friday. Green School New Zealand has a focus on sustainability, but it doesn't come cheap with enrolment and tuition fees costing up to $40,000 for some overseas students.Three alien-looking pods or 'waka' emerging out farmland southwest of New Plymouth are a giveaway you've arrived at Green School New Zealand.Built out of sustainable New Zealand pine and heat-treated in the UK they are designed to be thermally neutral and to blend into the environment.Green School New Zealand chief executive Chris Edwards said the pods were representative of what the school was all about."These are curved buildings. They're a unique design and, if it doesn't seem too fanciful, I see them as almost a metaphor actually for the young mind."The young mind isn't linear. It isn't boxed. It's not contained. Why do we teach people in square rooms?"So what we are trying to do here I suppose to an extent is actually mirror what goes on in a young person's mind."It's querying, you know, it's a free mind. The lightfall here, the undulations of the scenery, the shadow etc."Based on Green School Bali, Edwards said the goal of the school - which had about 50 students enrolled - was to prepare young people for the 21st century."So we take as our starting point areas like the United Nation's sustainable development goal, permaculture, principles of the sustainability compass and we use those, if you like, as the heart of the curriculum."So instead of starting with your maths, your physics and chemistry they all tuck in under much bigger concepts."Edwards said subjects such as maths and te reo would be mapped against the New Zealand curriculum and students at the Green School would be able to graduate with NCEA.He said the school hoped to eventually accommodate 500 students from Year 1 through Year 13 - half of whom would come from overseas.Brazilian couple Elisa Roorda and Flavio Vianna had enrolled their daughters Nina and Sofia.Roorda said they were won over immediately."We came to visit the Green School and we just loved it. The whole family. The kids asked us to stay here."We were planning to go back to Brazil in January and go back to our lives and then we said 'no lets stay here and have a new life here in New Zealand."Roorda said they were attracted by the school's values and its location.Even the price tag was not off-putting."Well the public schools in Brazil they're not good schools so the people that have money they all go to private schools."So where we live in Brazil we all pay for school so what we are paying here is the same as there so for us it's not a difference."The Brazilian couple said the Green School helped get student visas for their daughters and they been granted visas as their guardians.Another person not regretting moving to New Zealand with his family to enrol at the school was 10-year-old Freddie Chambers. He transferred from the Hong Kong Academy."Well here is a lot more open space and it's like more in the countryside and Hong Kong's more like a city and a town and so right now it's less busy here and it's a really nice place."The Green School Bali is operated as a not-for-profit, but its New Zealand counterpart expects to eventually run surpluses. The Ministry of Education requires all private schools here to be registered and have regard to the statement of National Education and Learning Priorities. But they are not required to teach to the New Zealand Curriculum. The Green School New Zealand has provisional registration. When it is fully registered it will qualify for a per-student subsidy of up to $2300.- text by Robin Martin, RNZ

Today we are joined by Sarah Macalpine from Two Birds One Stone Farm, which is a small cut flower farm located near the shores of the Bay of Fundy. Sarah and her husband, Kenny, recently moved to Nova Scotia from Ontario to start their business. They felt like they wanted to make a change in their life and be more involved in nature. Sarah talks about the great energy in the Annapolis Valley that attracted her after considering different areas in the Maritimes. Today we caught up with Greyson MacAlpine, a freelance designer currently working on Wild & Grey, a new creative studio. In this episode we dig into growing up, changing career paths, Greyson's road to design, and so much more.
The intersection of passions is at the center of this talk with designer Greyson. She discusses her journey to learn skills enough to shift from graphic design to product design. After finding employment and working in that field in the bay area for a while she's now pushing herself again. Striking out on her own, she’s established a freelance collective full of designers with varied skill sets called Wild and Grey. Greyson’s work in photography, and specifically portraiture, is a reflection of her passion for people-centered design. Considering her audience as individuals, rather than as generic users, enables Greyson to have deeper connection to the things she’s making. One of the keys to this is cognitive empathy, which relies on understanding, rather than absorbing, someone else’s experience. Greyson discusses her journey and the importance, and challenges, of both finding and facilitating mentorship. Whether looking to gain a new skill, navigating freelance life, or feeling comfortable speaking at conferences, Greyson’s philosophy is: say yes, grab any opportunity you have to learn, and, ultimately, just make shit. “Just make sh*t.” On this episode we discuss : Diversity on design teams Designing for real life Importance of mentorship Human-centered design Advantages and challenges of freelance work Role of empathy and psychology in design Responses to criticism and building relationships with clients You can see more of Greyson’s work, and learn about her freelance collective at her website: www.greysonmacalpine.com Visit the Funsize website Subscribe to The Funsize Digest Check out Funsize on Instagram

As our search for all that has gone wrong with rock music continues, Episode 19 puts rock's most powerful symbol, the guitar itself, under fire. How did the guitar go from the coolest object on Earth to an instrument for wimps? We also discuss the death of rock's founding father Chuck Berry, the possible retirement of Eric Clapton, and a host of guitar-related names such as Eddie Van Halen, Yngwie Malmsteen, Steve Vai, Tony Macalpine, Al Di Meola, and Vinnie Moore. Pat also reviews Panic! At the Disco's recent Madison Square Garden gig. We thank all of our supporters who stepped up to get behind this brand new podcast this past year. We make it a point not to focus on any one particular artist, band, or genre of music, but with that comes the reality that our show may not always appeal to everyone at the same time. The seven decades of rock and roll music along with its even longer history gives us an extremely broad canvas to create discussions on, drawing from different areas with each episode. So there is still always something for everyone. In the previous 18 episodes we've discussed The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, David Bowie, Prince, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Kiss, Judas Priest, Led Zeppelin, The Eagles, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Pink Floyd, the Monterey Pop Festival, Woodstock, Doo Wop, The Beach Boys, Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, Steely Dan, The Strokes, Ozzy Osbourne, Black Sabbath, The Doors, Patti Smith, The Ramones, Jimi Hendrix, Metallica, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, The Velvet Underground, the Brian Jonestown Massacre, The Cars, Cheap Trick, Heart, Dave Grohl, Jack White, digital streaming, the state of the music industry and record labels, the effect of rap and hip hop on rock, Neil Young, Talking Heads, Counting Crows, Boston, The Temptations, Bon Jovi, AC/DC, the Smithereens, Suzanne Vega, Van Halen, Rick Rubin, The Gun Club, Lynyrd Skynyrd, the Allman Brothers, The Mekons, UFO, Chuck Berry, Little Richard, Chuck Klosterman, John Philip Sousa, Billy Joel, The Wipers, Iron Maiden, Kurt Vonnegut, Tom Waits, Thin Lizzy, the Bee Gees, Mozart, Beethoven, Puccini, Bob Marley, 5 Seconds of Summer, Twenty One Pilots, Ed Sheeran, the Desert Trip concerts, aging rock stars, our favorite debut albums, soundtracks, music licensing, and our most overrated and underrated artists. We've also been joined by two special guests, author and photographer Lydia Criss and writer and director Michael Lee Nirenberg. Welcome AaA Aficionados and welcome to another installment of your favorite Podcast. This episode begins with not a lot of talk, but unfortunately some RIP's for not one, two or three, but four losses to the musical community. It's been a rough year. Then it's on to the guest of the week; A four-string slinger who has added the bottom end for some heavyweights such as Uli Jon Roth and Yngwie Malmsteen. He will be back on the road soon with the likes of the Dio Disciples and MacAlpine, but is currently recording with Plenty Heavy, so get yourself aurally ready and please welcome Mr Bjorn Englen. Enjoy!
As a part of the later wave of Shrapnel shredders, Darren Housholder missed out on the exposure of some of his counterparts that came out in the 80's, but his 3 records for Shrapnel in the 90's set the bar high for shred. We cover his entire career including his album with Love/Hate, his brief time working with Jeff Pilson's War & Peace, W.A.S.P, Enuff Z'nuff and a near-miss with David Lee Roth. We also cover how he ended up with George Lynch's famous bomber jacket - and its return to Lynch.
Billy Sheehan ( The Winery Dogs, Mr. Big, David Lee Roth Band, Talas ) discusses his life and career. From his early days in Buffalo and Talas to the near reunion with David Lee Roth Band, the recent fundraiser for Tony MacAlpine, and the new Winery Dogs cd - Hot Streak.
Joey Tafolla discusses his life and career. From his early days learning guitar (and his highly musical family), to the record label he co-founded at 19, on again/off again (and now currently on again!) history with Jag Panzer, his solo shredder career with Shrapnel Records (and work with Tony MacAlpine), giving guitar lessons to Buckethead, his tour with the Michael Sweet solo band, and his upcoming projects.
Tony MacAlpine walks us through his entire career. From a young classically trained pianist, to one of the leaders of the first wave of shred guitarists in the 80's, Tony MacAlpine has a career spanning 30 years of amazing guitar. Support the show: Tony MAcAlpine in iTunes
