Cracker Barrel Old Country Store – the brand best known for rocking chairs out front, a gift shop of tchotchkes inside, and for being the restaurant of choice for road tripping families — has been struggling for a long time. After several quarters of negative traffic and sales, new CEO Julie Felss-Masino announced last month that the family-dining chain would be undergoing a brand makeover to become more relevant, with five pillars of change, ranging from store remodels and tech investments to menu changes and pricing. While brand makeovers are not unusual (Domino's and Papa Johns both announced new strategic overhauls at the start of the year), Cracker Barrel needs to walk a pretty narrow balance beam of modernizing the brand without drifting from the kitschy, homey vibe the chain is famous for.During Cracker Barrel's investor update call, which was hosted just two weeks before the company's Q3 quarterly earnings, Massino broke down the ways in which the company is trying to dig itself out of the red and onto a positive path forward. While these company updates typically don't pique the interest of the public outside of investor and restaurant news circles, mainstream media picked up the story, and Cracker Barrel was trending on X, the social media platform formerly known as Twitter.

Dan Evins founded Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® in 1969 in Lebanon, Tennessee. Over the next 50 years, Cracker Barrel evolved into a restaurant with a popular retail store and has taken the brand into the digital space with its online store. Within the brand's “old general store,” customers can purchase everything from apparel to candles to vintage candy to music. Around the holidays, the store is decorated with trees, and a Christmas theme fills the aisles, from stocking stuffers to thoughtful gifts. The welcoming atmosphere extends into the restaurant. Guests dining at Cracker Barrel find familiar Southern favorites on the menu. The fireplace is likely to be lit, a checkerboard awaits, and families can enjoy the brand's famous Peg game — a triangle block is located on every table. Cracker Barrel endeavors to offer a unique customer experience from the moment guests cross the front porch and enter the building.  Mark Johnson, CEO of Loyalty360, spoke with Amy Barnett, Vice President of Marketing, Loyalty, and Digital Experience at Cracker Barrel, about collecting valuable input from employees and field operations, rolling out the new Cracker Barrel Rewards program, and partnering with an American music legend.

Stock Analysis 2019: A Case Study of Biglari Holdings (Tickers: BH-A, BH) Biglari Holdings (tickers: BH-A, BH) is a conglomerate with two distinct lines of businesses: its operating units and its investment arm. The enterprise is led by Chairman and CEO, Sardar Biglari, who owns 55% of the company. Having once been attributed the titled the "Sage of San Antonio," Sardar has previously been likened to the younger version of the more famous Warren Buffett, aka the "Oracle of Omaha." With current valuations at historic lows, Biglari Holdings appears on sale for 50% off its net asset value, not including its four operating units, which include Steak n Shake, Western Sizzlin, First Guard (a property casual insurance company), and Maxim magazine. It also owns ~15% of the restaurant chain, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store (ticker: CBRL). Considering only the company's cash and the carrying value of its investments, net of total debt, Biglari Holdings as of 1Q19 end is worth approximately $392 million. This compares with its current market capitalization, as of the date of recording, of about $196 million, suggesting a possibly 100% upside to current price levels. Is this a value opportunity? You tell me. My purpose of this episode isn't to provide a thesis, but rather to articulate the situation and to invite you to arrive at your own conclusion. It's somewhat of a complicated situation - as value opportunities typically are - but it's nonetheless incredibly interesting, in my opinion. Part of the reason for the ambiguity is because at times there are no clear answers. No one will tell you the appropriate path forward. Yet, referencing the Aeneid, which Ben Graham so appropriately includes in the Intelligent Investor, "Through chances various, through all vicissitudes, we make our way..." Please feel free to leave your thoughts on the company and on whether you believe this is a "value investment." Future of Work Talk

Today’s Future of Work Talk show is focused on workplace culture, and specifically polarization and divisiveness that exists within organizations. At a time when our political landscape is incredibly polarized, in spite of the diversity of our nation, or workplaces are likewise polarized. Think about it: human beings are naturally drawn to “people just like them.” So even if our respective workplaces are comprised of diverse people, our tendency is to stay within the relative “safety” of our individual groups. Not diverse and inclusive at all. My guest today is Howard Ross. Howard is an author, social justice advocate and an expert on identifying and addressing Unconscious Bias. His latest book, Our Search for Belonging: How the Need for Connection Is Tearing Our Culture Apart, explores how to bridge our increasing polarized society. Howard and I discussed a variety of things, including how the Whole Foods and Cracker Barrel Old Country Store factions fully exemplify our polarization—and other things that are happening in the workplace that we’re not paying close enough attention to. We touched on: How we have turned our natural need for belonging into an unhealthy, destructive extreme. How our society is promoting segregation into “us” and “them” and the dangers that presents—for all of us What the consequences might be if society continues to fuel divisiveness What we can do, personally, to bridge these divides? What can businesses and organizations do to create inclusion and a true diverse culture within the organization, instead of just talking the talk. The ‘so what’ of my conversation with Howard was fascinating to me, and I think it might be to you as well. Here’s what organizations need to consider as it relates to culture, training, and the relationships their employees have with one another. While many organizations provide skills training, it’s just as important that they provide training in interpersonal areas, such as communication, inclusion, and addressing unconscious bias. This can be done, and it doesn’t have to be an insurmountable challenge. From Target’s “Courageous Conversations” workshops that engage employees of all backgrounds to talk about difficult issues, to Kaiser Permanente’s team culture, smart companies are exploring ways to build organizational structures that promote inclusivity. They are finding that working to remove bias in recruitment, hiring, onboarding and performance reviews pays off. They are challenging norms by asking courageous questions, embedding a positive organizational narrative around belonging and the value of diversity, and creating safe places to have dialogue around topics that are often difficult. Overcoming Cultural Divides in the Workplace /Expert Tips I’m contacting you with a segment idea about working across differences in the workplace. The big idea: Humans naturally bond with those in their own groups, but this tendency can foster unhealthy mindsets against those with political, religious and cultural differences. The workplace, for many of us, is the most diverse setting in our lives and workplace environments have the potential to orient us toward working across differences more than any other place. The so what: While many organizations provide skills training, it’s just as important that they provide training in interpersonal areas, such as communication, inclusion and addressing unconscious bias. Today on Cause Talk Radio, Megan, and Joe talk to Sloane Lucas, Manager, Corporate Citizenship, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, about their cause marketing efforts on behalf of Operation Homefront whose mission is to build strong, stable and secure military families so that they can thrive in the communities they've given so much to protect. One creative fundraiser launched last summer was Operation Rocker. With the purchase of a rocker on Cracker Barrel’s website, the company donated an adult rocker to Operation Homefront. Cracker Barrel also offered this same opportunity for each eligible rocker cushion set purchased online during this time.  On the show, Megan, Sloane, and Joe discuss: What is Operation Homefront and how did Cracker Barrel begin working with them? Operation Rocker is a new, major initiative for Cracker Barrel. They promoted both online and in stores. The first year they sold/donated 700 rockers. Why Cracker Barrel chose rockers instead of food for its cause marketing promotion. Rockers are an iconic part of their brand. What was Operation Homefront's process for distributing the rockers? How Cracker Barrel promoted the program. Lots of social media, including paid media. How Rockefeller Plaza was transformed into ROCKER-feller plaza with the Cracker Barrel Old Country Store rocking chairs on FOX & Friends. How important it is for nonprofits to be social media savvy and have a client-centered mentality.  Joe tests Sloane's knowledge of Cracker Barrel with trivia! Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® and fan-favorite country music artist Neal McCoy announce the upcoming CD release of Pride: A Tribute to Charley Pride: Deluxe Edition, which will be available on Nov. 3rd exclusively at all 633 Cracker Barrel Old Country Store® locations and online at crackerbarrel.com.  Pride: A Tribute to Charley Pride: Deluxe Edition contains two exclusive bonus tracks not found on the original edition that was released in 2013 by Slate Creek Records. The album contains Neal’s versions of 13 songs made famous by the legendary Pride. Highlights include Neal performing duets with three of country music’s greatest voices. He sings “Roll On Mississippi” with Trace Adkins, “I’m Just Me” with Raul Malo, and Pride’s signature song (which earned songwriter Ben Peters a GRAMMY Award in 1972 for Best Country song), “Kiss an Angel Good Mornin’” with Darius Rucker.    “I wanted to open people’s eyes about Charley and remind them of all that he has accomplished,” says Neal. “I thought the best way to do that was to just put his music out there and let people hear what great country music sounds like." In 1981, Charley Pride was introduced to Neal after the younger singer won a nightclub talent contest in Dallas and soon hired the newcomer to be his opening act at his concerts. Neal continued to work for Pride until 1986 when he left to pursue a recording contract. Neal's hits include “No Doubt About It” , “Wink" and "The Shake." He is currently touring with Blake Shelton on the “Ten Times Crazier" Tour."
