When JJ Pace tells us that he was hired in 2002 to build and eventually lead a finance team that would create and implement monthly budgets for a four-location building materials company located within Charlotte, North Carolina's greater metro area, the sense of accomplishment that he exudes never falters even when he eventually confides: “In the end, I was the last employee there.” It turns out that Pace's 5-year stint as a controller (2002–2007) for Build It With Brick of Greater Charlotte was transformational not necessarily for the company but certainly for Pace, who first joined the company as an operations-minded executive but soon found himself knee deep in Excel spreadsheets and month-end reporting tasks. “My job was to basically build the finance team from scratch for what was at the time an expanding business,” explains Pace, who grew into a finance leader as he contributed to the management insight that made Build It With Brick a successful company—until it wasn't. “Unfortunately, there was nothing that we could do. We were undercapitalized to ride out the downturn, and the decision was made to close the company,” comments Pace, who despite the bitter outcome refused to exit Charlotte's building materials and construction corridor and over the next few years found work as a controller for several small to midsize Charlotte firms. Along the way, Pace would also return to school locally and receive an MBA with a concentration in finance from Queens University of Charlotte. It was with an MBA in hand and nearly a decade of controllership experience behind him that in 2013 Pace accepted a CFO role with Service Pros Installation Group, a flooring installation company that today has 68 locations across the 16 states. “It's been a fun ride: Over the past 9 years, our compound annual growth rate has been 52.9 percent,” remarks Pace, whose finance team today serves Service Pros as well as two other operating companies—each with its own controller and a combined workforce of more than 500 employees. –Jack Sweeney

In this episode of the Move to Value Podcast, we talk with Marque Macon, MBA, FACHE, Assistant Vice President, Atrium Health's https://www.carolinasphysicianalliance.org/ (Collaborative Physician Alliance), who discusses the importance of using support teams to assist providers in value, including accurate documentation and coding. Hi Marque. Can you give a brief overview about the Collaborative Physician Alliance? Sure thing. Well, Collaborative Physician Alliance, or CPA as we like to refer to ourselves as, we are a physician-led, clinically integrated network, focusing on collaboration to redesign healthcare for better quality and efficiency, better health for our patients, better satisfaction for our providers, and better value for all. We are made up of about 2,700 physicians, 2/3 are employed by Atrium Health, and about 1/3 are what we consider affiliates. These affiliates are community physicians with whom we share patients. Together, we have about 300 physician practices and over 370,000 covered lives in our value agreements, and we are anticipated to grow to over half a million covered lives by 2023 and 2024. Since our first performance year in 2017, we have achieved over 136 million dollars in total savings and over 8 million dollars in pay-for-performance incentives. How does CPA use population health data and analytics to create strategies to promote health equity and access to care? Well, we often like to say that we have the holy grail of data. Through collaboration with our payer partners, we have access to robust claims information which is really helpful as we understand the disease prevalence of our population. We also leverage real-time clinical data through our Electronic Health Record and will have even more capabilities as we transition to a standard Electronic Health Record across our enterprise. Additionally, we lean into the expertise of various teams in developing strategies to promote health equity and access to care, by including Atrium Health's Population Health and Analytics team, our Center for Outcomes Research and Evaluation (CORE), and our community and social impact team. For example, based on our research, we know that when it comes to hypertension, there is a higher prevalence of uncontrolled hypertension among African Americans within our Greater Charlotte region. This data also shows that there is a higher prevalence of patients in hypertensive crisis among this population as compared to white patients. And we see similar trends in our diabetes population. So, Atrium Health's Equity Executive leadership, in partnership with the Quality & Equity of Care Committee of the Charlotte Mecklenburg Hospital Association. These boards requested a focus on Health Equity. And as a result of our findings, the Greater Charlotte Region selected Hemoglobin A1c control and Diabetic Blood Pressure control in African American patients as areas of focus. Healthcare mergers and practice acquisitions are happening with greater frequency. What impact can this have on the provider and the patient? Yeah, sure. So, for the most part, healthcare mergers and practice acquisitions have had favorable impact on providers and patients, particularly within Atrium Health. Since 2018, we have expanded our footprint through strategic combinations with Atrium Health Navicent, Atrium Health Wake Forest Baptist, and most recently, Atrium Health Floyd. So, now Atrium Health has over 70,000 teammates across the Carolinas, Georgia, and Alabama and have 38,000 patients encounters each day – that's about one patient encounter every two seconds. We've also leveraged our economies of scale to experience a cost avoidance of overhead and IT expenses, provide greater access to care, and increase our influence with our payors. These efforts have allowed us to move closer to achieving the triple aim: improving the patient experience, delivering high quality, and managing our medical costs. And by expanding our...
Becky Knight 0:00 Thank you for joining us today with me is Sonia Hart. And she's going to be with us to talk about the significance of Black History Month, really the significance of what's happened in the last year and how that's impacting the members of the Business Resource Group. And then what she sees is the future.Sonia, welcome. Can you tell us a little bit about yourself by way of introduction.Sonia Hart 0:21 Thank you Becky, for having me here. Um, my name is Sonia heart. I am in my day job, the program manager for heart failure for the Greater Charlotte market. I'm also the former chair for the African American BRG had been in that role for the last couple of years and was really excited to be able to pass that torch on to our new chairs. I have been with Novant for 21 years. So and we've seen a lot of changes throughout that time and just really excited about what the future holds.Becky Knight 0:56 Well, we are recording this in February, which is Black History Month. And I thought we'd begin with a reflection from you on a historical figure or maybe someone that is personally meaningful to you, someone that you think of this month and the contributions that they've made to Black history and American history.Sonia Hart 1:14 I think for me right now, the person that comes to mind is Cicely Tyson. And with her recent passing, just really learning about her life, and she had lived for 96 years. So she had a very full life. Also reading her book right now, which is very interesting. And just to kind of see the parallels of the things that she went through to get where she was as this world renowned actress, um, she's very introverted, very thoughtful. So she really reminds me of myself in a lot of ways as far as really being thoughtful about what's the next step or what's the next plan, and always having a purpose in mind. So I think for me, that's who comes to mind for me as a historical figure.Becky Knight 2:03 So you are a part of this modern history. So this last summer 2020, and really the whole year 2020 is one that will go down in the history books as being quite memorable for several reasons, both for the COVID-19 pandemic, and also the racial and social unrest following the killing of George Floyd. And I wondered if you had any thoughts on what it was like to be a part of the the leadership of the BRG, which is over 600 members strong, and what that was like to be a part of this time in history and to lead folks during such an upheaval and such a time filled with so many emotions.Sonia Hart 2:48 I think for me, personally, what I saw the BRG do was two things, it was a safe space, for those people of color, to really kind of just, you know, get together to talk about the issues that were at hand, especially with the pandemic and having to social distance. And then with the social unrest with George Floyd and, you know, trying to still remain professional at work, we're still having these feelings of how do I cope with this as an individual, and we did some really great sessions during the summer to really kind of bring home the point of it is okay to have the feelings that you have, and to make sure that they have outlets to be able to express their feelings and to know that they had support in the BRG and I thought we did a really good job of facilitating that and providing that safe space for them.Becky Knight 3:49 As someone who's been here, you said 21 years? How do you see or do you see a change in how maybe Novant Health would have responded 20 years ago to how it responded now? Have you seen a change in how we're able to talk about race and racism?Sonia Hart 4:06 I will honestly say I really applaud Carl Amato and his efforts as well as the executive team for the insight that they have on things and really taking a stand when it may not be the most popular at the time. We're always taught as young people that two things that you don't discuss in the workplace is your salary, and politics, or racism, or any of those types, untouchable subjects and I really think this past year in particular, that those subjects have now come to the forefront and it's important to have those discussions and share those feelings and have people be able to voice their concerns or their opinion respectful way, but to know that they everybody is not going to be the same or everybody is not going to agree and it's okay to be disagreeable, but just to always be respectful and I think call and the executive team did a really good job of showing that with their leadership.Becky Knight 5:08 How do you see the African American BRG as a place for understanding both the past, and also what's going on in the present?Sonia Hart 5:17 I will say to that question, Becky, that I do feel like we still have a ways to go with addressing the present. I think there are opportunities out there for us as BRGs to really reach across the aisle and have those courageous conversations and discussions to move race relations forward, as well as you know, developments of equity in our hiring practices, as well as just in general in day to day reactions with other employees, I think we still have, I think we've come a long way, in especially the part of being able to have conversations with a co-worker that may not look like you or may not have the same belief that you have, but I still feel as if there is still much more work to be done in that area.Becky Knight 6:12 Any last parting thoughts or words of wisdom as we close our episode?Sonia Hart 6:17 I would probably just say, in closing that I feel like Novant Health is on the cutting edge of what diversity and inclusion looks like. And I think that we have a really significant blueprint that I think other companies really want to learn from and follow. So I'm extremely proud to say that I have been a part of that for a very long time and still look forward to see what's next.Becky Knight 17:10 We're very fortunate to have you as a 20 plus veteran of Novant Health and hope you'll continue to to be with us and I know you're still involved in the Black + African American BRG as kind of a senior sage leader. And so really value that that history and that perspective that you bring as someone who's been involved for a long time, and people come in with energy and ideas. And we need those kind of elders in the group who can share their wisdom and expertise. So thank you for all that you've done for the BRG and for Novant Health as a whole. And thank you for being our guest today on Mosaic.Sonia Hart 17:46 Thank you BeckyTranscribed by https://otter.ai

Dr. DeJaco is an Associate Professor of Biology and Environmental Science at Pfeiffer University in North Carolina. She also holds a B. The publication can be accessed here. Carrie's website provides a comprehensive list and detailed information on native and invasive plants for your yard and garden. One of the many things that changed around video games is their role in kids' lives. Initially, video games were seen as alienating, isolating, and addictive flashing lights that kept the children in front of the screen for hours. Today, and since the massive use of online games, video games are much more than just games; kids use them to socialize, make friends, learn teamwork, and many other things. Gaming became, in many ways, an enriching experience, and we will discuss that with our guest, Keith Vinson. Keith Vinson is the Vice President of Operations at the YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas and former executive director of Greater Charlotte's YMCA. Keith has over 20 years of leadership experience, building effective teams, highly productive, and immersed in a culture of continuous improvement and operational excellence. In this episode, we talk about the role of video games in people's lives, the career opportunities they offer, and the evolution of the relationship between parents and gaming. Keith shares part s of his journey to YMCA, his experiences with video games as a kid, and his reaction to having a gamer son. We also talk about YMCA's numerous inclusive programs, Keith's relationship with parents at YMCA, and much more. LIVE FROM LINCOLN CENTER IN DALLAS TEXASTHIS THURSDAY @ 1:00PM CSTAndrew and Clifford partnered in 2019 to create the independent residential brokerage, BLANQ MOR Real Estate Group servicing the Greater Charlotte and Lake Norman areas of North Carolina. While most real estate agents build their business gradually over time, Andrew and Clifford went ALL-IN with a “build it and they will come” mentality. So far, they seem to be on to something as they're currently on pace to close over $60M in only their 2nd full year. “We want to be a company that, not only talks about the power of a positive mindset but lives it by having people walk out of here better than when they stepped foot in the front door,” Andrew says. After Andrew attended a Brent Gove event in Scottsdale this past spring he came back on FIRE!! After discussing the opportunity, he and Clifford jumped in head first to move both their residential and commercial teams over to EXP bringing over $150M in production collectively! Andrew, a 3rd generation Real Estate professional is the Managing Broker for BLANQ MOR Real Estate Group in Charlotte, NC. Having worked his way up the ranks at another top-producing team in his market, Andrew credits his Grandfather who owned and operated a residential real estate brokerage for over 30 years as his inspiration for creating his own Real Estate company. His hard work, charisma and passion for the business helped Andrew been recognized as a “Top 200” agent in his local MLS (20k+ agents!) for the last 5 years in a row…Andrew specializes in all facets of the residential Real Estate business but truly shines when it comes to building a powerhouse network of Real Estate professionals around him. He takes great pride in his ability to train and support new or newer agents into the business in order to help them establish sustainable careers in real estate! Clifford's real estate brokerage career began at a small boutique commercial firm in Concord, NC (just outside of Charlotte) in 2014. I didn't know anyone when I moved to Concord after college and did any deal I could get my hands on at the time including property management. My strategy was to network, knock on doors, mail letters, and use social media to gain opportunities. After a couple of years of pouring my blood, sweat, and tears into learning CRE, I decided to open Blanq Real Estate so that I could mentor others and create a legacy in CRE.
113: How to Balance the Mission and the Business as a Nonprofit Leader (Jim Warren)SUMMARYMany nonprofit leaders struggle to maintain their passion for the organization's mission as they grapple with the management realities required to run a complex nonprofit business. If you're wrestling with that “mission versus business” tug-of-war, Jim Warren is the perfect person to know. Jim is the Executive Director of the Carolina Raptor Center, and brings his energy and wisdom from 40 years in the nonprofit sector to episode #113 of the Path Podcast. Jim and I discuss what's helped him maintain his passion over the years as well as the practical approach he's taken to leadership development, life-long learning and building a team of talented staff and board members.ABOUT JIMJim Warren has been at the Carolina Raptor Center since January of 2006, and has served as its Executive Director since May of 2011. Jim's journey in nonprofit leadership began as an intern with the Charlotte-area YMCA, and led to a job offer from that organization before graduating from Appalachian State University in Boone, NC. He continued to develop his leadership skills as the Superintendent of Aquatics for Mecklenburg County, NC, and then as Associate Executive Director for the YMCA of Greater Charlotte and Chief Operating Officer for the Upper Marlboro YMCA in Rock Hill, SC. He returned to the Raptor Center as the Vice President and Chief Operating Officer and then assumed the senior role. Jim notes the best part of his job is working with others who are passionate about CRC, both staff and volunteers. (Who wouldn't love driving into a nature preserve each day?). IN case you were wondering, if he were reincarnated as a raptor, he would be a Great Horned or Barred Owl, “because they seem laid back, but they know how to get down to "business, and are extremely protective of their families.” Jim enjoys mountain biking, snow skiing, hiking, spending time with my family, reading, and listening to music.EPISODE TOPICS & RESOURCESTom Peters' book In Search of ExcellenceSteven Levitt's book FreakonomicsCheck out Quest at the Carolina Raptor CenterReady for a Mastermind? A lot of us already belong to a business networking group, which means we’ve attended some happy hours, met people, collected business cards, and…. moved on. One professional networking group, though, wants you to put your time and talents to work for a good cause NOT necessarily related to your business – to help you grow personally and professionally. The Charlotte Business Group calls itself the largest business networking group in the Greater Charlotte area, founded in 2017 on 3 basic principles—and first among them, is PHILANTHROPY. Their founder, Robert Hackney, is a volunteer at Loaves & Fishes food bank, a boys basketball coach at church, and a crew leader for Habitat for Humanity… and he serves in the National Guard Reserves. When does he sleep? We don’t know, but we’re happy to welcome him to the BrandBuilders Podcast.

Meet Executive Director, Katy Ryan from 24 Hours of Booty, in Charlotte NC. 24 Foundation’s mission is to inspire and engage communities to make an immediate impact on the lives of those affected by cancer. For us, that means more than funding research and goes beyond finding a cure. To 24 Foundation, that means investing in services that untangle the maze of appointments, tests, and treatments after diagnosis, and funding programs to increase the quality of life for survivors decades into the future. Founded in 2002 by one man riding a bike for 24 hours, 24 Foundation’s signature annual events now serve as celebrations of survivorship, the power of peer-to-peer fundraising, and the spirit that our participants live with every day. Event participants commit to cycling or walking as much or as little as they’d like within 24 hours. It isn’t a race. Miles don’t matter. It’s an experience, celebration, and triumph. United by the common vision of cancer navigation and survivorship for all, 24 Foundation has raised more than $21 million to date to support our mission. Katy is an avid athlete, passionate community advocate and fundraiser, in that order. A native of Alaska, she studied neuroscience and psychology at Bowdoin College in Brunswick, Maine. Following her first (and only) job in corporate America, Katy jumped feet-first into the non-profit sector where she’s worked in fundraising, partnerships and community relations for more than 18 years. Prior to joining 24 Foundation, Katy served as the Vice President of the Alexander Children’s Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Alexander Youth Network. In that role, Katy managed major gifts, special events, and donor stewardship. She was also responsible for oversight of the agency’s grant seeking efforts as well as their robust volunteer program, which engages more than 1,200 individuals and corporations each year. Katy has also served as Senior Development Director at the YMCA of Greater Charlotte; Vice President of Partnerships and Development at Girls on the Run International; Director of Business and Alumni Relations at Wake Forest University and Associate Director of Development at UNC-Chapel Hill. She lives at Lake Twitty, NC, with her husband Steven and her three step-daughters, Amanda, Rebecca and Samantha. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/sprout-connectors/support

If you’re looking for some guidance, I recommend enlisting the help of a coach first and foremost. If you don’t have the budget for that, however, there are many good Facebook groups you can join. I myself run a real estate Facebook group called Real Estate Hustlers. Feel free to hop in there any time to find some Mastermind partners. I’ve seen people who are in that group double and triple their business in the last 12 months. At the very least, my best advice is to get into a Mastermind. Pre-qualify the people that you’re talking to just like you would a buyer or seller—don’t just get into a relationship with anybody. Check out their Facebook and see what kind of stuff they’re posting. Is it positive or negative? Is it a good fit for what you’re trying to accomplish? After that, it’s all a matter of reaching out to them via Facebook. That’s what I did when I was getting started. “Don’t be on an island—reach out! ”As far as the structure of the Mastermind goes, we typically use the first 15 minutes of ours to practice accountability. Each member states their wins from the last week and reports their numbers. After that, we go into an open Mastermind topic for the week. It’s all very structured, and we have an agenda with a specific goal in mind. With every event that you go to or video that you watch, take one thing you learn from it and implement it into your own business. Otherwise, you run the risk of getting overwhelmed If you’re looking to get into a coaching environment, please feel free to give me a shout so I can lend you a hand. Just call or email me, and I’d be happy to help!
As you begin planning for 2017, I recommend that you figure out where your business is coming from. What three business sources will you focus on next year? Join Our Team in Greater Charlotte!Receive FREE Scripts to Promote Your Real Estate Career! Now is a great time to start planning for 2017. As you reflect on your business sources of the past year, ask yourself which sources you would like to focus on next year. How many business sources should you have, anyway? Recently, I had a conversation with a real estate agent who only had six or seven deals this year. They listed out where they want their business to come from next year, and their goal was to have seven different business sources. I actually recommend that you only focus on three business sources. That is what our team does and we are able to do 100 deals by prospecting (calling expired listings), using internet leads, and keeping in touch with past clients. We go deep into those three business sources, and we only added that third pillar this year. “I recommend focusing on three business sources. ”So, don’t scatter your business sources. That is why the average agent only sells six to eight homes a year. Don’t use more than three business sources unless you are growing a team and are doing more than 100 deals a year. If you go deep on these three business sources, you will see business come in from other sources. That is OK. For instance, we will see business come from 10 other sources this year, but we’re only focused on marketing to those three sources I mentioned earlier. Think about that when you are coming up with your business plan for 2017 and figure out what your top three business sources will be. If you have any questions or are interested in joining our real estate team, give me a call or send me an email. I would be happy to help you!
My team and I recently put together a list of personal and professional goals that we're committing to over the next few months. They range from better focus on lead generation to getting to bed on time every night. Join Our Team in Greater Charlotte!Receive FREE Scripts to Promote Your Real Estate Career! As a real estate agent, what does your best look like? As a team, we got together and built a list that we're going to leave up for a couple of months as a reminder. What can we commit to? At our past team meeting, we each picked one item to commit to, and here's what we put together for both personal and professional goals:Two to four hours of focused lead generation daily. You can lead generate, but if you're not focused, you're not going to get the results you want. 30 minutes per day of script practice. We do script practice in the office two days a week for about an hour, so they've got to be doing some script practice on their own if they want to do their best. Two appointments per week.Wake up early. Maybe this means you've got to be in bed by 10 p.m. This might also mean unplugging before bed because there are studies that show if you're attached to your phone or watching TV before bed, it messes up your sleep.Eating healthy.Exercise daily.Read 30 minutes a day. This is huge for your mindset. If you're not spending about 30 minutes per day reading and working on your mindset, the rest of this stuff doesn't really matter, because you're not going to do it anyway!Be at the office on time every time. How you show up here is how you show up out in the world, so if you're not showing up on time at the office, how are you going to show up on time for your clients?Staying on your time block. This one is huge. If you say you're going to lead generate from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. every day, just do it and be focused!Afternoon lead generation if you have no active clients. If you don't have appointments with people who want to buy or sell a house, you need to be at the office prospecting in the afternoon. As a newer agent, what else do you have to do? On my team, we do the transaction coordination for you, so there are no excuses. What can you do every day to get uncomfortable? You should do something outside of your comfort zone every day. Outside of your comfort zone is your money zone.“Outside your comfort zone is your money zone. ”I hope you can take something valuable from this list we put together. If you're thinking about joining a real estate team, just give us a call or send us an email. We look forward to hearing from you!
Charlotte View interviews Fara Robinson volunteer for The Greater Charlotte SPCA. Founded in 2010. Greater Charlotte SPCA is a group of dedicated rescuers with many years of experience helping homeless pets. We are a 501c3 organization and rely on public donations to help us save homeless animals. Mission: to improve the quality of life of homeless animals through veterinary care, foster care, humane education and spay/neuter programs. SPCA do not own and operate a shelter facility. All pets are fostered in the homes of our volunteers. Since our pets come from shelters and other rescue situations, we find that fostering in our homes gives us the opportunity to assess the pet's personality & needs and match them with the right adoptive family. In addition, we are able to provide all care and medical needs for our animals and it enables the pet to develop a happy frame of mind prior to adoption. *How the Process of Pet Rescue works in Charlotte**How to Adopt a Pet**How to Volunteer in the Process of Pet Rescue* Twitter: @gcspca / Instagram: @charlottespca / Phone 704-000-0000 / Email: info@charlottespca.org / P.O.
