Q&A on the CBS series Ghosts with actors Brandon Scott Jones, Danielle Pinnock, Rebecca Wisocky, Asher Grodman, Devan Chandler Long & Sheila Carrasco, and executive producers & showrunners Joe Port and Joe Wiseman. Moderated by Mara Webster, In Creative Company. Samantha, a cheerful freelance journalist, and Jay, an up-and-coming chef from the city, throw both caution and money to the wind when they decide to convert a huge run-down country estate they inherited into a bed and breakfast -- only to find it's inhabited by the many spirits of deceased residents. The departed souls are a close-knit, eclectic group that includes a saucy Prohibition-era lounge singer, a pompous 1700's Militiaman, a '60s hippie fond of hallucinogens and an overly upbeat '80s scout troop leader. If the spirits were anxious about the commotion a renovation and B&B will create in their home, it's nothing compared to when they realize Samantha is the first live person who can see and hear them.

In this episode of Over the Teacup Sunday: because this is Halloween month we're getting ready for ghosts, goblins, and aliens to get you scared and get interested in the paranormal and supernatural so let's start with two of our favorite shows: GHOSTS: This brilliant CBS comedy premiered last year in 2021, and they have just started their second season which actually premiered on Thursday the 29th of September; it runs every Thursday night. The very simple premise of this half hour program is: a young couple's dreams come true when they inherit a beautiful country house, only to find it's both falling apart and inhabited by many of the deceased previous residents including A Viking, a Native American, a Victorian lady, a Revolutionary War soldier, a man with no pants, a hippie, a singer from the 1920's, and a Boy Scout leader. They are trying to turn it into a bed and breakfast because they came from the big city. It was developed for television by Joe Port and Joe Wiseman and it stars Rose McIver, Utkarsh Ambudkar, Brandon Scott Jones, Danielle Pinnock, Asher Grodman, Sheila Carrasco, Devan Chandler Long and Richie Moriarty as well as a brilliant ensemble cast. RESIDENT ALIEN: This show is about an alien that crash-lands on Earth, kills and takes on the identity of a small-town Colorado doctor, and slowly begins to wrestle with the moral dilemma of his secret mission on Earth, while also dealing with the mayor's young son, who can see his true appearance. They just wrapped season 2 so if you have the opportunity you need to go back and catch up on it. It's another brilliant piece of programming that invites you into the world of aliens and the possibility of what exists out there and combines them in such a manner that it will make you believe. It stars Alan Tudyk, Sara Tomko, Corey Reynolds, Alice Wetterlund, and Levi Fiehler, along with a brilliant ensemble cast. It is set in the ficticious town of patience Colorado. Danielle Pinnock, one of the many breakout stars in the ensemble of CBS hit comedy Ghosts, joins us on the podcast and chats all about her experiences working on the series, sharing that she was actually a replacement for the initial actress cast as Alberta who had to depart during the pandemic-made uncertainty, and how she is the total opposite of her character, as she is a self-described ‘home body' while Alberta is a “boisterous, brassy, delicious hot mess of a diva!” Danielle also shares who from history and her own life inspired her character. “I wanted to pay homage to all of the unsung heroes of the 1920s, the Black heroes especially. The Bessie Smith's, the Ma Rainey's, and just really give them some shine through this character.” She also shared that Alberta was inspired by her own grandmother's storytelling ability. “My grandma Euna is that girl that always has the stories. She'll say ‘oh, I remember this one time in Jamaica…' and I think ‘oh God, where are we going with this? We've got company!” she laughed. “Alberta is a star in her own right, in her own mind, but also has these moments of poignancy, like when she's trying to get Hetty to vote. I definitely think this character is a dream role. She's stretched me in so many ways as an actor and I'm so excited for the shenanigans we have in store for season two.” Danielle also spoke about how unified the cast experience was as it was the first series regular roles for the majority of the ensemble cast, and none of them lived in Montreal, their filming location, so they got to know each other during the process. “None of us were in New York or LA with our families. We really got to learn each other's strengths and weaknesses in comedy, what makes people cry-laugh, I'm always the one who ends up cry-laughing. I break every time Devan [Chandler-Long] utters a line. He is so funny as Thor-finn. It's just been a magical experience and we all know it's special. That doesn't necessarily happen on every TV sets and with ensembles. No one has an attitude, everyone is so gracious, so kind, so ready for the work.” Season one of Ghosts is available to stream on Paramount+
