Fred Bodimer brings the latest updates in health for the weekend, starting with the American Cancer Society's new guidelines recommending annual lung cancer screenings for individuals aged 50 to 80 who smoke or have a smoking history. This measure aims to save lives by targeting specific criteria related to smoking history. Additionally, insights are shared regarding an FDA panel's concerns over gene editing techniques used in a potential cure for severe sickle cell disease. The discussion involves the promising outcomes of a gene therapy named "Extracell" by Vertex Pharmaceuticals, nearing FDA approval, albeit with some considerations regarding unintended genome changes. Furthermore, concerning statistics from the CDC highlight an increase in infant mortality rates, primarily attributed to maternal complications and bacterial infections in newborns.

WASHINGTON (AURN News) — The White House has issued a response to a recent report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), indicating a decline in gun-related homicides in 2022. In a statement, Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre acknowledged the positive trend while emphasizing the need for continued efforts to address gun violence. “Too many families have an empty seat at their dinner table and too many communities have been torn apart because of gun violence. Though gun violence impacts all communities, it does not do so equally. This report makes clear that communities of color are especially at risk of facing this senseless violence,” Jean-Pierre stated. “Black Americans continue to be disproportionately killed by gun homicides, with a rate more than four times higher than that of the general population,” she added. A previous CDC report from 2022 also shed light on the grim reality of gun-related deaths. Between 2019 and 2020, the report highlighted a significant increase in gun-related deaths, particularly among Black and Hispanic males between the ages of 10 and 44 years. This is a newsletter. It is written by a psychiatrist. Not actually plural psychiatrists. I am a suicide expert, much to my chagrin. Today, I am reporting on the update I did see coming:A total of 49,449 Americans died by suicide in 2022, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said Thursday. This is a 2.6% increase from 48,183 in 2021 and the highest number ever recorded, according to provisional numbers released in a new report from the federal health agency. All the investments into “solutions” for “the mental health crisis”—absent compelling data to the contrary—have this one metric calling utter and total b******t.Nothing we have done—objectively—has worked. More people are dead. The irony is in the article about the topic, it advertised one of the things that—itself—is not working:About 14% of the 23,000-plus Illinois calls made in April and May to the 988 crisis hotline were redirected to other states, per an analysis by health research outlet KFF.Why it matters: When calls are transferred out of state, it becomes much harder for those specialists to locate nearby services for people in crisis. We can't address a crisis just by screaming about it being one. We can throw money at just anything and expect it to help.If we addressed the problem of not enough gasoline for cars by filling the tank with water, and funding endless mobility hotlines, and startups to make matching platforms for the right place to fill you car with water, we would be unsurprised with the outcomes.I'll summarize my take—Current mental health treatment:* Makes inaccurate diagnoses* Prescribes wildly ineffective treatments* Those treatments are delivered by individuals not trained meaningfully to address the problems we are facing* We have effective treatments available.* We refuse to pay for them as a system, instead paying for nonsense* We refuse to respond to crisis in a way that is anything under that a failure* We allow vampires to profit from Destroying emergency response nationally.* And we stalk and penalize those who dare help those suffering the most. It's making a lot of money for private equity, VC backed children, and big health vampires. It is deeply unserious as an approach to a very, very serious problem. It's not going to get better until we call a spade a spade. We need to, before the horror takes you too… This is a public episode. A recent Pew Research study has shown that 76% of parents are concerned about their children's mental health, particularly depression, and anxiety. This is a worrying figure, as it indicates that many parents are unaware of the signs and symptoms of depression in their children. Parents need to understand how to recognize if their child is depressed or suicidal so that they can get the help they need.In mid-February, numerous news outlets reported an alarming number of teens are feeling depressed and suicidal, and teen girls are at the highest riskAccording to a CDC Report reported by FOX News, released earlier this year:Fifty-seven percent of high school females reported feeling sadness or hopelessness in 2021, a 58 percent increase from 36 percent in 2011.Thirty percent of females seriously considered attempting suicide in 2021, an almost 60 percent increase from 19 percent in 2011.Twenty-four percent of females made a suicide plan in 2021, a 60 percent increase from 15 percent in 2011.How would you know if your teen is depressed? Hey there epic gamers. Our podcast is epicly epic. We would enjoy if you watched our CDC podcast!
1.3 million Americans attempted to take their own life in 2016. 45,000+ of those lives were lost. [2019 CDC Report.] Nine years ago, if you’d searched for a community of suicide-attempt survivors, you couldn’t have found one. Our guest Dese'Rae Stage knows because she looked and, when her search came up empty, decided to do something about it. Dese’Rae is a photographer, two-time suicide survivor, just shy of having a Ph.D. in suicidology and psychology and the founder of Live Through This. She created this movement to capture portraits and stories of suicide attempt survivors and in doing so – change the conversation, culture, and resources around suicide prevention, awareness, and support. In a season where suicide is on the rise (it's predicted that by 2020, someone will take their own life every 20 seconds), Dese’Rae is doing something about it. Join our important conversation. SHOW NOTES: Dese'Rae pursued psychology, with an emphasis on suicide research, all the way through to a Ph.D. program before realizing she did not have faculty support on her topic. “Suicide was still too taboo, even for advanced programs,” Dese'Rae says. "As a culture, we are now more open to doing research on suicide and including people who have been personally affected by the loss of a loved one or from personal experience." Dese'Rae shares. Why is suicide on the rise? There are numerous answers + Dese'Rae calls out that mental illness is often the most widely discussed, but it’s important to note that the CDC reports between 1999-2016, 54% of the people who took their lives in the United States did not have a known mental health diagnosis. Other life events that are filled with pain, confusion, and hopelessness that could take people to the path of suicide: breakups, job loss, legal or financial issues. Dese'Rae found her value in a desperate moment. She's constantly making that choice to live. "The last few years have been about affirming her choice to live." Dese’Rae on what it’s like to live with chronic suicidal thoughts. Media focuses on those who have died by suicide instead of the people who have lived to tell the tale afterward. Live Through This: series of portraits and true stories of 186 suicide attempt survivors across the United States started as a personal photography project that turned into so much more. "I picked up my camera as a coping skill and it later became my career" She makes portraits of people in the world where they tried to take themselves out of. Used as a teaching tool for researchers + clinicians Are you or someone you know struggling? Here are tips that Dese’Rae shared: Distract yourself: play with your dog, watch a movie, etc. Develop a WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) Then, once you're beyond that critical point of panic, you can evaluate your needs. If you're emotionally available, willing, ready: Reach out to someone you know is struggling. Asking for help: We all struggle asking for help. Those who are suicidal or depressed are likely feeling ashamed and struggle even more at asking for help. We can all relate: We are all so different but we struggle with the same stuff -- pain and suffering. There is power in sharing our vulnerability. If you or someone you know needs help, please call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 1-800-273-TALK (8255). Live Inspired Podcast guest Dennis Gillan shares the loss of two brothers to suicide. Listen to his story on ep. #46. Listen to comic Adam Cayton-Holland as he shares about losing his sister to suicide on Live Inspired Podcast ep. #99. DESE'RAE STAGE'S LIVE INSPIRED 7 1. What is the best book you’ve ever read? Perks of Being a Wallflower by Stephen Chbosky. 2. What is a characteristic or trait that you possessed as a child that you wish you still exhibited today? The persistence to seek out the things I am curious about. 3. Your house is on fire, all living things and people are out. You have the opportunity to run in and grab one item. What would it be? It would have to do with photos. 4. You are sitting on a bench overlooking a gorgeous beach. You have the opportunity to have a long conversation with anyone living or dead. Who would it be? My wife. She's my favorite human being and we teach each other a lot. The older you get, the more complicated life gets and you don't get to have those moments as much as you used to. I would always welcome more time just talking to her. 5. What is the best advice you’ve ever received? Just keep going and trust your gut. 6. What advice would you give your 20-year-old self? Your life is going to be a lot more interesting that you could have ever hoped for. 7. It’s been said that all great people can have their lives summed up in one sentence.
