Software is eating the world, right? We've all heard this phrase by now, but inventor and investor Pablos Holman has something important to add: “The world can't eat software.”That's why Pablos focuses on “deep tech”, i.e. how to invent new solutions to real world problems like energy, water, waste, construction, and sanitation. Pablos says we're still mostly using version 1.0 technology for these fundamental systems, but recent advances, including AI and the ability to prototype and test in software, are enabling incredible innovation in hardware.Pablos has worked with Jeff Bezos, Bill Gates, and more. He's kind of a mad scientist and in this episode we'll discuss things that sound like science fiction, but that Pablos says are coming soon, such as solar panels in outer space that can beam clean energy down to earth, autonomous cargo ships blown by the wind across the ocean, and tiny nuclear reactors buried a mile underground that power the world above. At Deep Future, Pablos is on a mission to solve the world's biggest problems, and he's hoping more people will make the jump that he did from software to hardware and into deep tech, because, as he says, “ all the people who've been building software their entire career, those are the ones who are going to save the world.”—More on Pablos: Deep Future: https://deepfuture.tech/Deep Future podcast: https://deepfuture.tech/podcast-index/ —Support CRAFTED.:Sign up for the CRAFTED. newsletter: https://www.crafted.fmSubscribe to CRAFTED. on your favorite podcast platformShare this episode with a friend or colleague!

He is the author of the 7-volume Metamodern Spirituality Series and, most recently, Metamodernism: Or, The Cultural Logic of Cultural Logics. His primary interests include theorizing developments in culture after postmodernism, productively bridging the divide between science and spirituality, and developing sustainable systems for life to flourish. All of these lead through the paradigms of emergence and complexity, which inform all of his work. Tomas Björkman is an entrepreneur and financier, and has over the past 25 years built innovative international companies in the areas of banking and real estate. His entrepreneurship combined with a keen interest in both society and science led to the creation of the the Ekskäret Foundation in 2008. Tomas himself describes in the forewords of the book ‘Changing the world we create' why he started and is still very involved in foundation: “In my twenties, I had the choice between an academic career in theoretical physics or the world of commerce. I chose the latter and spent twenty-five years in business. Eventually, I sold my company to one of Switzerland's larger banks continuing for a time to serve on its board. But the call of the world of ideas was irresistible. My background in theoretical physics and as an entrepreneur in information technology, investment banking and property development had allowed me to learn about and view our existence from both theoretical and empirical perspectives. My personal drive increasingly became to unlock the hidden structures of the world around me. I sought to bridge many academic fields including cognitive neuroscience, developmental psychology and sociology. I started searching for connections that form the evolving whole. This curiosity led me to spend a decade researching and writing “The World We Create”. I also established the Ekskäret Foundation to facilitate the co-creation of a more conscious society. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/podcast-c709ee4/message

In many ways, our understanding of and our relationship to our future forms and shapes us. Yet there is a subtle feeling that this relationship with the future itself is currently changing. We are collectively confronted with a lot of problems that are already here or are approaching us fast from a horizon before us, And yet we know that we can´t solve these problems with the current mindset. We don´t even know if our collective framing of that horizon and the events that we are anticipating, is the best one. Nora Bateson is an award-winning filmmaker, writer and educator, as well as President of the International Bateson Institute, based in Sweden. Her work asks the question “How we can improve our perception of the complexity we live within, so we may improve our interaction with the world?” She just publishes her wonderful new book 'Combining', which is an embodiment of her recent work on Warm Data and offers a radical ecological approach to many of the key issues of our time: climate change, political upheaval, education, health, food and relationships. The Tomorrow Blueprint: The Science Behind Fiction - Pablos Holman

Crazy Wisdom

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 5, 2023 47:34

Introduction: In this episode, the renowned Pablos Holman (Website) discusses how science fiction is transitioning into reality, particularly in the realm of technology. Drawing on his expertise, Pablos sheds light on revolutionary concepts that are pushing the boundaries of what was once believed impossible. Main Points: Space-based Solar Energy: Pablos recently witnessed the conception of a company aiming to place solar panels in space. The primary challenges on Earth, such as clouds and nighttime, are nonexistent in space, which experiences constant light. The innovative solution involves capturing this 24/7 solar energy in space and transmitting it to Earth through radio waves, a concept called "Vertis Solis." This can potentially offer scalable, carbon-free energy. The Dyson Sphere Concept: A theoretical idea that involves surrounding a star with solar panels to harness its energy. While it remains an extreme long-term science fiction aspiration, its possibilities are intriguing. Wireless Energy Transfer: Wireless energy transfer isn't new; it's how radio and wifi work. However, they aren't optimized for transferring substantial energy. With advances in beam steering technology, this might soon change. By focusing solar arrays directly at antennas on Earth, efficient energy transfer can be realized. Space Exploration and Ecosystem: Cost has always been a limiting factor. From the space shuttle days, where reusable rockets were only a dream, we've come a long way with companies like SpaceX bringing the cost down significantly. With the lowered cost, activities like manufacturing and asteroid mining in space become more feasible. These ventures, although promising, also come with huge technical risks. Manufacturing in Space: There are inherent advantages to space manufacturing. The vacuum of space can produce better-quality computer chips. The absence of gravity also has significant effects on the atomic scale, potentially enhancing semiconductor production and other goods. Investment Curve and Deep Tech: Holman emphasizes that while software is indeed revolutionizing industries, it's essential not to neglect deep tech. Unlike typical startups focused on short-term applications, deep tech aims at the fundamental challenges facing humanity. Challenges with 3D Printing: While the concept of 3D printing was groundbreaking, its real-world application faced obstacles. The solution lies in a different approach – building layer by layer, utilizing recyclable inputs like used coffee grounds, thereby revolutionizing manufacturing. Misconceptions and Course Corrections: Pablos asserts that humans often latch onto the wrong stories or misconceptions, hindering progress. He cites examples like the confusion between reactors and bombs, and the historical outlawing of psychedelics, which are now considered potential treatments for PTSD. Closing Remarks: Pablos stresses the importance of storytellers in shaping our future. The right narrative can direct our collective efforts towards genuinely transformative goals. He invites listeners to connect with him and shares that he's fortunate to meet innovative minds daily, always pushing the boundaries of possibility. Contact: For those intrigued by Pablos' insights, he can be reached at pablos@deepfuture.tech and also listen to the Deep Future podcast.

A lot of science fiction takes place in the near future, somewhere in the next century or so. But what about the far future in 10,000 years, or a million? How do writers and creators imagine deep time and make it plausible? We discuss our favorites and some misfires. Then Charlie Jane talks about her new novel, The City in the Middle of the Night (out now!), which explores a human society thousands of years from now. An expansive discussion on the climate, past and future: the weight of humanity on natural systems, repercussions of temperature and sea level rise, the future of the amazon, the history of salmon and northwest forests, and more. Curt Stager is an ecologist, paleoclimatologist, and science journalist with a Ph.D. in biology and geology from Duke University (1985). Stager blends the long-term perspective of a climate historian and multidisciplinary outlook of a biologist-geologist with the communication skills of a lifelong teacher and writer. He has published over three dozen peer-reviewed articles in major journals and has written extensively for general audiences in periodicals such as National Geographic, New York Times, Fast Company, and Adirondack Life.  Since 1990, he has also co-hosted Natural Selections, a weekly science program on North Country Public Radio. He currently teaches at Paul Smith's College in the Adirondack Mountains of upstate New York, and holds a research associate post at the University of Maine's Climate Change Institute, where he continues to investigate the long-term history of climate in Africa, South America, and the northeastern United States.
