The American Psychiatry Association defines depression as loss of interest of activities once enjoyed, and that the symptoms must last longer than two weeks before an official diagnosis.   There isn't just one kind of depression and they don't all generate from the same source.    For people that have not experience depression, it is really hard for them to understand. Or they try to related to something that has no relationship to the actual condition.    You can tell they don't know about when they offer responses like, “you just have to get out of yourself.    So this episode is a two-fer. It is for people that have an anxiety condition that may or may not have a side order of depression. The internet hate campaign known as #gamergate began in February of 2013 when video game developer Zoe Quinn put out a simple, text-based game called Depression Quest that attempted to show players what it was like to live with this illness. After receiving positive reviews and write-ups, a swath of misogynistic trolls in the gaming community took to message boards to rail on the game they saw as a feminist, political correctness conspiracy to infiltrate their male dominated space, and the fire was only stoked by a long-winded “call out” by Zoe’s ex-boyfriend leading to mass harassment including death threats, rape threats, and the leaking of Zoe’s email, social media, phone number, home address, and nude photos. Online Reviews and the end of personal thought/opinion   History:   in 1999, three websites appeared on the internet and set in motion the new “social trend” of online reviews. RateItAll.com, Deja.com, and Epinions.com.   Dan, have you ever bought, played, or gone anywhere without consulting a review?   -According to Shopify.com 90% of customers' buying decisions are influenced by online reviews. -Anyone have examples of using online reviews? -Do you usually go with those reviews or not?   How consumers use online reviews: The most important thing to know, and businesses know this, is that the mental gab between reading a review and making a decision to purchase from a business is super small, and usually results in an immediate yes/no decision. (shopify) People will typically read 6 or less reviews before forming an opinion. So at least people will read some things, hopefully opposing reviews, before making a decision. Of course, there are people out there that only read positive reviews and make a decision, or only read the negative to make their decision. Which seems a bit counterproductive to me.   Google/Search engines decide how to rank your business in their results based 10% on online reviews.   More so recently, Youtube reviews have become crazy popular, be it gaming reviews (and even game review channels such as ____ and ____) all the way to the ever so swamped beauty guru reviews. The Millennial generation, sorry to say, think that they are going against companies and big business by listening to these online “real” people talking about games or whatnot they are currently using, loving, liking etc. Flavor of the month, since there are even “this month's favorites!” as if we need to change our fav things every month to keep up with the Jones'.   The Jones'! Another problem with social media, but we will talk about that some other time.   Now, as with all “good and original” things, there has been a backlash to all of this supposed genuine investigating of products. A scandal, shall we say.   Not too long ago, Gamergate happened. And this was big. -It started in 2014 when an independent game developer's ex-bf wrote an insanely long and detailed blog post about their relationship up to their breakup. He believed she was cheating on him with people in the gaming industry, including a game journalist at Kotaku. This specific detail made people wonder why her free game, Depression Quest had gotten so much attention over more popular video games and titles at the time. -Now, the internet is a cruel and horrible Wild West. And it did what the internet likes to do. It went ahead and decided to severely harass Quinn and other female developers, as well as Anita Sarkeesian, who had a youtube series about how the gaming industry hates women. That harassment went way too far in my opinion, and I know gamers hate thta the whole social justice crap got dragged into it, but it did. What did this bring to light? That there definitely are journalists/reviewers that are paid, and are in cahoots with developers to give good reviews. This is not anything new. Just like commercials on tv. Actors are paid to stand there, look pretty, and claim that this shampoo is the best you will ever find.   Thoughts on this? Why are people so frustrated about honest reviews? A good video about gaming reviews by Dunkey. Why are game reviews, or online reviews so hard to understand?   Just like with any sort of media, people have to assume that they are being targeted to buy, think, repeat whatever their are being sold. You have to be convinced to buy a game. Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) In what has to be the longest coherent rant they've ever put to audio, Dan and Arman discuss the ongoing harassment in the video game community.  One of the first pieces I ever wrote for Built to Play was the style guide. On the podcast, and in the articles, we should limit our  use of the word gamer. We agreed to that rule because it's not a word that makes a lot of sense.  Not everyone who plays video games is a gamer, just like not everyone who watches movies is a film buff. Now it's unusable, even in the strictest sense.  Since 'real gamers' began attacking Zoe Quinn for supposed ethical infractions or Anita Sarkeesian for inserting politics into innocent games, the term has become toxic. They've released pounds of personal information online, scared women out from their homes and riddled their social media with death threats. Let's not dance around it. These attacks have been misogynistic, largely targeted towards women who don't fixate on shooters and Nintendo nostalgia. Some people use Quinn's activities to say all games journalism is corrupt. HASHTAGGAMERGATE! But that fundamentally misunderstands what games writing is. Most articles on sites like Gamespot and Polygon commentate and criticise. Think game reviews or big convention coverage. On the few occasions where they engage in journalism, often it's redistributing content. Here's a trailer a publisher gave us. I found this neat thing on the Internet. That's not a fault of the websites, that's just the job. The games industry is insular and secretive, so there are few opportunities to do professional reporting. That's true with a lot of enthusiast press, like in comics, music or movies, but especially so in games. The old adage is that anyone can be a journalist. Just point a camera out your window. You have to call someone to be a reporter. When there's no one to call, however, there's not much you can do. Sites like Polygon, USGamer and Kill Screen still go out of their way to make great articles about game development and the video game community, although few people read them. That's true of all media by the way. The Washington Post's biggest story in 2013 wasn't the Edward Snowden scandal. It was a collection of pictures of a busted Sochi bathroom. All of this is to say that people who accuse games journalism of being corrupt are missing the point. I hesitate to call anything written on this site journalism. It's definitely not reporting. We're still honest when it comes to our opinions, as I expect most in the industry are. Enthusiast  writing serves a different purpose than conventional reporting. They disseminate product information and evaluate media.  That lack of diversity is why scaring away strong writers who go beyond that, like Jenn Frank and Mattie Brice, helps no one. They were among the few people who went beyond criticism to question the games they played and the people who made them. 'Real gamers' encourage bias in the industry by making the pool of commentators smaller and the voices less varied. Courtesy Wikimedia Commons I also challenge gamers on whether they are the equivalent of music, television or film enthusiasts. Outside of video games, enthusiasts seem to recognize that their medium of choice is a broad spectrum of content, made for many audiences. Some genres might be dismissed off-hand, like the romantic comedy or pop music, but even then good versions of these make it through to critical appeal. A lot of music fans acknowledged that 'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepsen was fun and an enjoyable piece of music ephemera. Or that while 500 Days of Summer has its problems, the film tries to take the romantic comedy in a new direction. Being a fan of a medium entails a willingness to dive into its depths and explore all possible permutations of it. It doesn't mean tripping head first into the shallow end to wallow in its most obvious features. If you enjoy  big budget games, go ahead. No one can take that away from you. There are plenty of games made by big publishers that are genuinely great, but no game is perfect. Wolfenstein: The New Order has to be one of my favourite games of the year. It also has some groan-worthy dialogue and has terrible enemy artificial intelligence. Every game merits criticism, from indies to those old Nintendo titles. People who have such a narrow definition of games need grow up. More people have launched an Angry Bird than have made Mario jump. More adult women play games than teenage boys. Those blockbuster franchises won't vanish any time soon, but as video games become more popular, players have be more accommodating to more kinds of people and more kind of games. There is no sense in attacking people who are trying to make games like Depression Quest, because that's only going to become more prevalent, not less. So if gamers are people who like the most bland of the bland, and feel justified in ruining people's lives on behalf of a fool's errand, I don't want to be associated with them. Call me a game player. Call me an enthusiast. But please, I'm not a gamer. Gamers are about as self-absorbed as men's rights advocates, who can only conceive of the world in childish black and white dichotomies. I'm embarrassed to have needed to write this rant. Games are supposed to be enjoyable. Ideally, when coming away from a great game, we should feel enriched. A well-crafted game can engender joy, sadness, hope and occasionally fun.  All this does is make me feel disappointed in all of us. Games, and the people who play them, are capable of so much more. Stephen opens New Business on a somber note by leading a discussion of the extremely controversial Depression Quest, but the controversy is set aside in favor of discussing it as a game and teaching tool. Continuing the theme of psycho-analysis, Stephen dives into the odd world of Doki-Doki Universe. Austen returns to the Cold War with cross-platform stealth action game Counterspy, completely sells out by talking about the three good mobile phone games that aren't Twitter (tm Dr. J. Metts), and finishes with a rare family-friendly PS4 game in The Last Tinker: City of Colors. Donald was clearly in a violent mood, so he takes his frustrations out on Persona 4 Arena and Ultra Street Fighter IV with a couple of brief stops on Vita fighters as well. DON'T PANIC - Now Posted's back (ok, panic a bit), then it's down to Whatcha Watchin'. Stephen attended the Ultimate Car Build-Off while diving into the 1980s BBC rendition of Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, and finishes with a look at Hunter x Hunter. Donald keeps the anime train rolling with the beloved cyberpunk talker Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex, while Austen hits Cardcaptor Sakura (dodgy East Asian English dub included), Muppets Most Wanted and a brief Korra update before discussing the number one movie in the nation that stars a former world heavyweight champion, Guardians of the Galaxy. Think we'd ignore Gamescom? NEIN! Although it didn't get the full E3 blowout, the spate of game announcements and removals provides plenty of fodder for discussion. Also, you may slap the nearest EA executive for using "selfie" and "all the feels" in the same presser. The Mushrooms throw shade on hoarders, mourn the passing of Robin Williams, and celebrate the return of Cowboy Bebop. Welcome to another edition of Nerds Without Pants! No, this show isn't about an epic wrestling match between Antonio Inoki and Great Baba.This time, we revisit a topic that we talked about when we were still the Tri-Force crew on PixlTalk: Japanese games. Instead of rehashing material we take advantage of the fact that we’re nearing the end of the console cycle and grade major Japanese developers on their performance. Before that, we talk about what games we’ve been playing. Rob tried his best to like Aliens: Colonial Marines, but the game failed him, and he had to break up with it. As a result, he’s done with Gearbox as well, and we talk a little about that entire debacle. Rob’s also been playing The Sims 3 (I know, right?), and has a special announcement on a new project. Patrick and Julian tag team the Platinum craziness that is Metal Gear Rising. Julian played the indie game Depression Quest, a text-based narrative that has him wondering if he needs professional help. After that, the Pantsless Ones crack open the grade books and give report cards to Capcom, Konami, Sega, Square Enix, Sony, Nintendo, and Platinum Games. If you’ve been following the show at all you’ll probably be surprised at some of the scores. We wrap things up by putting on our designer hats. It’s East meets West, and we select a favorite Japanese game property and pair it with a Western developer. We’re sad to say that this is Rob’s final episode as a regular member of NWP. It’s been a hell of a run, but he’s had a lot of life changes that prevent him from continuing, which he talks about. It’s kind of like when Son Goku was killed by Cell and didn’t want to be resurrected by the Dragon Balls. Actually yeah, it’s exactly like that.
