In 2014 the ex-partner of video game maker Zoe Quinn released an online essay with intimate details of their relationship and breakup. The story takes on a life of its own when internet trolls start referencing it in misogynistic conspiracy theories posted on online forums. Soon Quinn is bombarded with serious threats of real world violence. When details of where she lives circulate, she flees her home. Quinn was only the beginning as the harassments spread to others who were advocating for an inclusive gaming industry. On this episode of Bad People, Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen share their own experience of having an online presence and discuss what online harassment really is and who is behind it. Whose responsibility is it to make the online World safe? The episode contains audio from BBC News. Warning: This episode contains descriptions of terrorism, threats of sexual violence and online abuse.CREDITSPresenters: Dr Julia Shaw and Sofie Hagen Producer: Louisa Field Editor: Anna Lacey and Rami Tzabar Music: Matt Chandler The Open University: Dr Sarah Laurence and Dr Ailsa Strathie Commissioning Executive: Dylan Haskins Commissioning Assistant Producer: Adam Eland#BadPeople_BBCBad People is produced in partnership with The Open University and is a BBC Audio Science Production for BBC Sounds.

This is not an easy story to hear, but an important one to tell. Today's video is brought to you by a donation from Alan. And this is what Alan to say: "Hi Sandman, Please cover the recent GamerGate/Quinnspiracy controversy. I will understand if you don't cover it, so don't feel obligated to try and connect the event to MGTOW if the connection would be too far-fetched. I'd watch the video either way. Thanks!" Well that's what Alan wants me to do so I'll try and do it. This issue relates to men going their own way because video games have been one of the few escapes that men have had from the Gynocentric world. Men could go and play grand theft auto and take out their aggression on random 3D rendered characters in virtual worlds. I'm not going to lie, I enjoy driving cars around in Grand Theft Auto just to run over pedestrians and blow things up. This helps me get my testosterone filled aggression out so that I can go about my day. In recent years video games have actually started competing with pornography for male attention. Women must have sensed this so they started running into gaming culture to try and get some of that attention. And what really sucks is that women are going into virtual male fantasies and trying to sanitize them. They want to eliminate virtual violence against women. Real violent crime and rape statistics are declining in much of the western world so now feminists are going after virtual male violence against women. Feminist social justice are attacking gamers by entering the culture and trying to change it from within. And they are bringing up supposed misogyny in the gaming culture. But unlike Anita Sarkesian I don't have time to sit and play three to four hours a day worth of World of Warcraft. Don't worry I'm just joking. I know she's not really a real gamer and besides I'm reading that fifty four percent of gamers these days are now women. If gaming was a democracy women would be winning because they would be majority of voters. Many people say that democracy is like two wolves and a sheep voting to see who they'll have for dinner. I prefer to think of it as two women and one man voting about who is going to have the social, financial and political power in our society and who's going to become the utility. And since women make up the majority and have own group preference men are screwed if they play the game. Women gamers are also supposedly upset because they have been held back in the gaming business and industry. Last time I checked they have just as many opportunities to program and develop games. But instead of doing the hard work they seem to be either blaming men for not changing the culture to their liking or trying to sleep their way to the most influential positions in the gaming industry.Quinnspiracy Theory: The Five Guys Sagahttps://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C5-51...Support this podcast at — https://redcircle.com/mgtow/donationsAdvertising Inquiries: https://redcircle.com/brandsPrivacy & Opt-Out: https://redcircle.com/privacy
EPISODE 40 | When Nerds Attack - Gamergate, Elevatorgate & Sad Puppies A short late night chat in an elevator becomes a flashpoint in a storm of online misogyny; a woman has to hide because she dares critique the depiction of women; a relationship ends, sparking off a campaign of hate against women that lasts for years, and not even the venerable Hugo Awards are safe from the spreading #onlineslimemold. And then the racists get in on the action. You'd think the realms of atheism, video games and science fiction would be immune to online nonsense, but you'd be very, very wrong. Even there, aggrieved men weaponize the internet to try and "take back" something that was really never theirs in the first place. Along the way the #slimemold will use doxxing, swatting, spite charities and other tools to lay the foundations of the modern alt-right, QAnon and the January 6, 2021 attack on the US Capitol. During the first lockdown my guest this week, Zoe Quinn kept me thoroughly entertained. I'd look forward to her daily One Outfit One Exercise Instagram account and I'd watch her run all over Howth exercising as I'd tuck into another Twirl. I'd muse to myself, as Amy Poehler once said ,‘Good for you, not for me.' In this episode Zoe talked to me about her Z Talk series, her former life in fashion and lessons she's taken from this unique time in history we're all living through. Now, here comes the science part. The 80% is always free to listen to but not free to make. The internet hate campaign known as #gamergate began in February of 2013 when video game developer Zoe Quinn put out a simple, text-based game called Depression Quest that attempted to show players what it was like to live with this illness. After receiving positive reviews and write-ups, a swath of misogynistic trolls in the gaming community took to message boards to rail on the game they saw as a feminist, political correctness conspiracy to infiltrate their male dominated space, and the fire was only stoked by a long-winded “call out” by Zoe’s ex-boyfriend leading to mass harassment including death threats, rape threats, and the leaking of Zoe’s email, social media, phone number, home address, and nude photos. Here are the episodes to revisit and share with those who may need more context and understanding around the current protests: -Monsters (S2E5) is about how the language of the monstrous has been used to create fear around black folks. -Drugs (S1E9) is about the way substances have been used to criminalize and imprison black folks since the first laws. -Terrorism (S2E9) is about the history of the KKK as well as the Black Panthers and their amazing contributions to their communities despite being labeled terrorists (like BLM). -Dangerous Teens (S2E7) is about how fear around school violence as well as panics around “super predators” and “wilding” have contributed to the school to prison pipeline. -The Lost Cause (S3E5.5) is about the rewriting of history around the Civil War and how confederate monuments have been placed throughout history during important moments in Civil Rights as intimidation. -Suburbia (S3E3) is about the history and violent reinforcement of suburban communities -Rednecks (S3E4) is about how the powerful have long turned poor white people and black people against one another (and their fight for solidarity) This week, consider donating to Black Visions Collective (https://www.blackvisionsmn.org/) // Campaign Zero (https://www.joincampaignzero.org/) // I run with Maud (https://www.gofundme.com/f/i-run-with-maud) // Reclaim the Block (https://www.reclaimtheblock.org/home) For 15% off your first order of Ray Con headphones, head to http://www.buyraycon.com/ah If you are living in Seattle, check out Black Caviar Catering (http://www.blackcaviarcatering.com/) to get delicious pre-made meals delivered to your door American Hysteria is written, produced, and hosted by Chelsey Weber-Smith (https://www.chelseywebersmith.com/) Sound production by Clear Commo Studios (https://clearcommo.com/) Co-written by Riley Smith (https://www.instagram.com/rileymsmith96/) Co-produced by Miranda Zickler (https://www.instagram.com/mirandatheswampmonster/) Follow American Hysteria on social media: Twitter: AmerHysteria (https://twitter.com/amerhysteria) Instagram: AmericanHysteriaPodcast (https://www.instagram.com/americanhysteriapodcast/) Facebook: Americanhysteriapodcast (http://www.facebook.com/americanhysteriapodcast)

Was ist eigentlich Gamergate?

Scott Benson, one of the three developers behind Night in the Woods, says that the team has cut ties with co-creator Alec Holowka following yesterday's allegations of abuse and sexual assault. “We take such allegations seriously as a team. As a result and after some agonizing consideration, we are cutting ties with Alec,” Benson tweeted via the Night in the Woods twitter account. Canadian independent game developer Alec Holowka, whose credits include Night in the Woods, Aquaria, and others, has died. Holowka was a fixture in the independent game community, having co-founded Bit Blot with Spelunky creator Derek Yu, Infinite Ammo where he was working on an original project, and Night in the Woods studio Infinite Fall. Holowka was a multi-faceted game developer, versed in programming, sound, music, and game design. Bit Blot's Aquaria won the Seumas McNally Grand Prize at the 2007 Independent Games Festival, as did Infinite Fall's Night in the Woods at the 2018 IGF. News of Holowka's passing comes at the end of a tumultuous week in the game industry. Holowka was one of several game developers accused of sexual assault and abusive behavior. Following accusations of abuse by game developer and writer Zoe Quinn earlier this week, and additional allegations of emotional abuse of a recent colleague, developers behind Night in the Woods said they would be cutting ties with Holowka. His sister Eileen Holowka announced his passing on Twitter on Saturday (her account has since been locked). She wrote: "Alec Holowka, my brother and best friend, passed away this morning. Those who know me will know that I believe survivors and I have always done everything I can to support survivors, those suffering from mental illnesses, and those with chronic illnesses. Alec was a victim of abuse and he also spent a lifetime battling mood and personality disorders. I will not pretend that he was not also responsible for causing harm, but deep down he was a person who wanted only to offer people care and kindness. It took him a while to figure out how. "Over the last few years, with therapy and medication, Alec became a new person - the same person he had always been but without any of the darkness. He was calm and happy, positive and loving. Obviously, change is a slow process and it wasn't perfect but he was working towards rehabilitation and a better life. "In the last few days, he was supported by many Manitoba crisis services, and I want to thank everyone there for their support. I want to thank Adam Saltsman for staying up late talking with us and reminding Alec that there was a future. "My family has and always will be the most important thing to me. Please give us time to heal. We tried our best to support Alec, but in the end he had felt he had lost too much." In a later tweet she added: "And in case it's not already fucking obvious, Alec *specifically said* he wished the best for Zoe [Quinn] and everyone else, so don't use our grief as an excuse to harass people. Go outside, take care of someone, and work towards preventing these kinds of things in the first place." #gaminglife #like #apexlegends #gamingmemes #anime #nintendoswitch #fortnitememes #pcgamer #retrogaming #gameplay #battleroyale #pro #destiny #art #bhfyp #blackops #fortniteclips #callofduty #twitchstreamer #geek #youtuber #lol #rdr #gamingcommunity #minecraft #overwatch #sony #fun #instagram #online --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/pixel-sultan/support

Leave us alone: Talks about ZOE QUINN and her allege claims of Kidnapping and the #METOO movement.
Zoe Quinn, the infamous game developer, is best known from the GamerGate controversy. But she’s back in the news after posting a #MeToo statement online alleging abuse at the hands of her ex-boyfriend, Alec Holowka. The accusations resulted in Holowka’s firing, and days later news broke of his death from suicide, but now findings from the Post Millennial are calling into question the accuracy of her post.

Cameron's talks about going back to Fallout 4, while James complains about Silent Hill 4 and gives some early Control impressions. This week, we're thrilled to have special guest Walt McGough with us to investigate a deeply un-special topic, Gamergate. A truly horrifying slice of recent internet history, Gamergate describes a string of targeted abuse leveled at people (mainly women, nonbinary folks, and POC) who dared to challenge the glaringly obvious veins of sexism running through the games industry. We cover figures such as Zoe Quinn, Brianna Wu, and Anita Sarkeesian, who endured levels of bullshit we can barely fathom to speak their minds. Update your social media passwords and get ready to stay horrified.

In light of the horrible mess that is GamerGate, we talk on this episode why, perhaps more than ever, video games need feminism. The terrible threats and vitriol spewed at critics like Anita Sarkeesian, Zoe Quinn, and others, are unacceptable, and we all must do our part, as gamers and human beings, to get rid of this idea that video games are a "guys-only" club. All music used belongs to their respective games/composers/developers/studios/etc. Ep S4E19
Subscribe (iTunes)Subscribe (Stitcher) In what has to be the longest coherent rant they've ever put to audio, Dan and Arman discuss the ongoing harassment in the video game community. One of the first pieces I ever wrote for Built to Play was the style guide. On the podcast, and in the articles, we should limit our use of the word gamer. We agreed to that rule because it's not a word that makes a lot of sense. Not everyone who plays video games is a gamer, just like not everyone who watches movies is a film buff. Now it's unusable, even in the strictest sense. Since 'real gamers' began attacking Zoe Quinn for supposed ethical infractions or Anita Sarkeesian for inserting politics into innocent games, the term has become toxic. They've released pounds of personal information online, scared women out from their homes and riddled their social media with death threats. Let's not dance around it. These attacks have been misogynistic, largely targeted towards women who don't fixate on shooters and Nintendo nostalgia. Some people use Quinn's activities to say all games journalism is corrupt. HASHTAGGAMERGATE! But that fundamentally misunderstands what games writing is. Most articles on sites like Gamespot and Polygon commentate and criticise. Think game reviews or big convention coverage. On the few occasions where they engage in journalism, often it's redistributing content. Here's a trailer a publisher gave us. I found this neat thing on the Internet. That's not a fault of the websites, that's just the job. The games industry is insular and secretive, so there are few opportunities to do professional reporting. That's true with a lot of enthusiast press, like in comics, music or movies, but especially so in games. The old adage is that anyone can be a journalist. Just point a camera out your window. You have to call someone to be a reporter. When there's no one to call, however, there's not much you can do. Sites like Polygon, USGamer and Kill Screen still go out of their way to make great articles about game development and the video game community, although few people read them. That's true of all media by the way. The Washington Post's biggest story in 2013 wasn't the Edward Snowden scandal. It was a collection of pictures of a busted Sochi bathroom. All of this is to say that people who accuse games journalism of being corrupt are missing the point. I hesitate to call anything written on this site journalism. It's definitely not reporting. We're still honest when it comes to our opinions, as I expect most in the industry are. Enthusiast writing serves a different purpose than conventional reporting. They disseminate product information and evaluate media. That lack of diversity is why scaring away strong writers who go beyond that, like Jenn Frank and Mattie Brice, helps no one. They were among the few people who went beyond criticism to question the games they played and the people who made them. 'Real gamers' encourage bias in the industry by making the pool of commentators smaller and the voices less varied. Courtesy Wikimedia Commons I also challenge gamers on whether they are the equivalent of music, television or film enthusiasts. Outside of video games, enthusiasts seem to recognize that their medium of choice is a broad spectrum of content, made for many audiences. Some genres might be dismissed off-hand, like the romantic comedy or pop music, but even then good versions of these make it through to critical appeal. A lot of music fans acknowledged that 'Call Me Maybe' by Carly Rae Jepsen was fun and an enjoyable piece of music ephemera. Or that while 500 Days of Summer has its problems, the film tries to take the romantic comedy in a new direction. Being a fan of a medium entails a willingness to dive into its depths and explore all possible permutations of it. It doesn't mean tripping head first into the shallow end to wallow in its most obvious features. If you enjoy big budget games, go ahead. No one can take that away from you. There are plenty of games made by big publishers that are genuinely great, but no game is perfect. Wolfenstein: The New Order has to be one of my favourite games of the year. It also has some groan-worthy dialogue and has terrible enemy artificial intelligence. Every game merits criticism, from indies to those old Nintendo titles. People who have such a narrow definition of games need grow up. More people have launched an Angry Bird than have made Mario jump. More adult women play games than teenage boys. Those blockbuster franchises won't vanish any time soon, but as video games become more popular, players have be more accommodating to more kinds of people and more kind of games. There is no sense in attacking people who are trying to make games like Depression Quest, because that's only going to become more prevalent, not less. So if gamers are people who like the most bland of the bland, and feel justified in ruining people's lives on behalf of a fool's errand, I don't want to be associated with them. Call me a game player. Call me an enthusiast. But please, I'm not a gamer. Gamers are about as self-absorbed as men's rights advocates, who can only conceive of the world in childish black and white dichotomies. I'm embarrassed to have needed to write this rant. Games are supposed to be enjoyable. Ideally, when coming away from a great game, we should feel enriched. A well-crafted game can engender joy, sadness, hope and occasionally fun. All this does is make me feel disappointed in all of us. Games, and the people who play them, are capable of so much more. Thanks to writer and community manager Emma Woolley who talked to us about her article on the topic on the Globe and Mail.Note, she didn't play any part in this rant beyond what you hear in her interview. Take a listen for yourself starting 1:30. She comes off sounding far more optimistic than either Daniel or I feel right now. We used music from the Free Music Archive: "Photosphere" by Charles Atlas and "Lost Radio Station Sings Me Up the Tunnel" by Fields of Ohio. Our opening theme was "The Libra Lunologists" by Fields of Ohio. **This episode was written by Daniel Rosen and produced by Arman Aghbali. ** IF YOU ENJOYED THIS EPISODE LEAVE US A COMMENT OR SUBSCRIBE. This week on a very special episode of Awesome Friday we discussed the ongoing situation in the gaming world for the last two weeks; namely the harassment of video game developer Zoe Quinn and video game critic Anita Sarkeesian. None of us are surprised at the levels of rage and misogyny directed at these women but each of us reacted in similar but different ways and though we had intended to touch on the subject and then carry on with our regular movie, game, and book reviews and recommendations we ended up talking about this for over an hour. This episode is just over an hour long. We haven't written much on the subject but you can read the following if you're not up to date on what has been going on. In yet another explosive episode the ‘Cocks are coming at you raw. Hot off a major earthquake in Northern California that found Angry Rob talking to Handsome Rob at 4 am while he was checking for gas leaks, they discuss a bigger story.
