Many dog owners hesitate when they hear the price of professional training. Yet those same people might spend thousands of dollars for a few hours of entertainment, such as premium concert tickets. In this episode of Dog Works Radio, Robert and Michele Forto explore the real difference between short-term experiences and long-term value. While concerts create memories for a single evening, professional dog training shapes the relationship you will share with your dog for the next ten to fifteen years. The conversation breaks down what professional training actually involves, why behavior problems often develop when training is skipped, and how structured guidance can transform the everyday relationship between dogs and their owners. If you have ever wondered whether dog training is worth the investment, this episode offers a perspective that may change the way you think about the value of training. What to listen for:Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, break down why "opting out" has become a buzzword that may obscure more than it reveals. While the term sounds empowering (giving dogs agency and choice), they argue it can become a self-congratulatory label that prevents handlers from addressing underlying training gaps.Stacy shares the story of 15-year-old Ray, who "opted out" of FEMA disaster work but later excelled at narcotics detection on a short lead. Ray didn't dislike detection work. Rather, she disliked working independently, far from her handler. Had Stacy recognized this earlier, she could have placed Ray in close-proximity disciplines like historic human remains detection instead of washing her out entirely.Robin recounts how one of her own dogs initially refused to search even three boxes in his front yard due to environmental overwhelm. But rather than accepting "he's opting out," she methodically built confidence through smaller areas, easier hides, and massive reinforcement. She eventually produced an elite champion! The key was asking why and adjusting the training plan, not accepting a vague opt-out label. They warn against the variable-reinforcement trap, in which dogs train handlers by occasionally succeeding, keeping handlers stuck in ineffective patterns. Stacy describes Dash's trained "collar-itch" behavior: a displacement signal she accidentally reinforced by making hides easier each time he scratched.Robin and Stacy do believe that legitimate opt-outs exist. Pain, slick floors, and overwhelming environments are just some of them. But these require specific diagnosis, not broad constructs. They advocate observable behavior analysis over anthropomorphic interpretations. This means that handlers need to teach opt-in through thoughtful progression rather than celebrating opt-out as a virtue.Key Topics:Defining Opt-Out vs. Observable Behavior (00:49)Ray's Independence Issue in FEMA vs. Narcotics Work (04:18)Environmental Confidence Building to Elite Level (07:35)Dash's Trained Collar-Itch Displacement Behavior (11:30)Variable Reinforcement and "Maybe Dogs" (15:29)Constructs vs. Specific Behavior Questions (18:40)Legitimate Opt-Outs: Pain, Slick Floors, Environmental Pressure (27:44)Teaching Opt-In from Day One with Puppies (34:31)Clever Hans Effect and Handler Cues (38:54) Resources:Dogs distinguish human intentional and unintentional action (study) We want to hear from you:Check out the K9 Detection Collaborative FB page and comment on the episode post!K9Sensus Detection Dog Trainer AcademyK9Sensus Foundation can be found on Facebook and Instagram. Send a textIn this episode of the Think Like a Dog Podcast, Millie is joined by professional trainers Easton, Brandon, and Jill from Mirror Image K9 for an in-depth discussion about when dog owners should consider seeking professional training support. The conversation focuses heavily on e-collar training, breaking down the philosophy behind the tool and explaining why proper foundation, timing, and safety are critical for success. The trainers explain how e-collars function as a communication tool rather than punishment, and why understanding pressure and release is essential before introducing any training equipment. You'll learn how to identify your dog's working level, how e-collar conditioning progresses through three structured phases, and how the tool can be used for real-world situations such as emergency recall, reactivity management, and resource guarding. This episode also addresses common misconceptions about e-collars and explains the safety protocols responsible trainers follow when incorporating them into a training program. If you're a dog owner considering professional guidance or looking to deepen your understanding of modern training tools, this episode provides practical insight from experienced trainers working with dogs of all temperaments. In this episode:• Why foundation training must come before any tool• The three phases of e-collar conditioning• How to find your dog's working stimulation level• Safety guidelines and proper collar fit• Using e-collars for recall, reactivity, and behavior managementSupport the showFollow Us On Instagram: @thinklikeadogpodcast @Mirrorimagek9 @OzzieAlbiesFoundation Work with Mirror Image K9 here: https://www.mirrorimagek9.com/contactusBe Our Guest: https://www.thinklikeadogpodcast.com Learn More About The Best Chance Program: https://www.ozziealbiesfoundation.org/
In this episode, we take a closer look at some surprising trends circulating in the dog training world on social media. Are trainers really wearing bite suits to evaluate everyday pet dogs? Can flirt poles and tug toys the only way to meet a dog's activity needs? And why do e-collars seem to be recommended for nearly every dog problem? Join me for a thoughtful conversation with veteran dog trainer Phyllis Smuland, who brings more than four decades of experience working with dogs and their people. Together we discuss what we're seeing online, the potential drawbacks of these approaches, and why thoughtful, individualized training matters more than following trends. If you're a dog owner or dog professional trying to make sense of conflicting training advice, this episode will give you practical perspective and plenty to think about. In this episode of Puppy Talk, we talk about what calm behavior actually looks like, why many dogs never learn how to settle, and how owners often encourage excitement without realizing it. Heather Wallace and I discuss the topic of getting burnt out with your bird dog training, testing, and trialing. We talk about two main kinds of burn out. The first is the feeling of mental exhaustion that can come when your training is not going well, or you are not having a lot of success in tests or trials. The second is the fatigue from all the logistics – setting up training sessions, lining up gunners, getting birds, planning around your work schedule, not to mention all of the driving that's involved. We hope you relate to this honest conversation about the realities of pursuing these hobbies with our bird dogs. Today is a mosh posh episode where we discuss all sorts of things being thrown around in the dog training world that are completely unhelpful or double standards that we put on dog trainers.
In this episode of the Animal Training Academy Podcast, host Ryan Cartlidge is joined by returning guest Michael Shikashio for a wide-ranging conversation about professionalism, community, and the future of the dog training industry. Michael Shikashio is the founder of AggressiveDog.com, a leading expert in working with aggression cases, a five-time past President of the IAABC, the 2020 APTT Member of the Year, and host of The Bitey End of the Dog podcast. Drawing on decades of experience supporting trainers across more than 20 countries, Michael brings a global, grounded perspective to the challenges and opportunities facing the profession today. Together, Ryan and Michael explore the vision behind the Canis Conference - a bold new event designed to bring trainers, behavior consultants, veterinarians, shelter professionals, scientists, and dog sports enthusiasts together under one roof. Michael shares how Canis was born from a desire to dismantle silos, reduce divisiveness, and create a space where learning, collaboration, and respectful dialogue can flourish across differing backgrounds and methodologies. The conversation moves well beyond conference planning, diving into the emotional and professional toll of online conflict, social media algorithms, and the rise of polarized "team" identities within the dog training world. Michael speaks candidly about criticism, controversy, and resilience, offering powerful insights for both emerging and established professionals navigating public discourse, online platforms, and ethical responsibility. Throughout the episode, the emphasis remains on compassion, professionalism, and the importance of face-to-face connection in restoring trust - both within the industry and with the public we serve. In this episode, we discuss: The vision and structure of the Canis Conference and its festival-style, multi-disciplinary approach Why safety, inclusion, and professionalism matter more than ever in the dog training industry The impact of social media algorithms on conflict, identity, and professional behavior Navigating criticism, controversy, and online hostility with integrity and resilience Moving beyond divisive labels to find shared values and common ground The power of in-person connection to rebuild trust, empathy, and collaboration Whether you are a new trainer finding your voice, a seasoned professional reflecting on your role in the wider community, or someone longing for a more respectful and united industry, this episode offers clarity, courage, and a hopeful vision for where we go next - together. You scroll. One trainer says never let your dog look at the trigger.Another says your dog has to look at the trigger. Both sound confident. Both sound science-y. Now you're more confused than when you started. In this episode, Emily and Claire talk about why dog training advice feels like such a mess, and how “good” advice can still be the wrong advice when it's ripped out of context and handed to every dog on the internet. This is your reminder that there is no single right answer. The goal isn't perfect protocol compliance. It's figuring out what actually works for your dog, your brain, and your real life.If dog training content has ever made you feel overwhelmed, guilty, or like you somehow missed the orientation… you're not alone.TLDL (too long, didn't listen): 3 Key Takeaways 1️⃣ Confident delivery does not equal correct advice – Someone sounding sure on the internet tells you nothing about whether their advice fits your dog, your skills, or your situation.2️⃣ Context matters more than the technique – The same strategy can help one dog, stress out another, and quietly blow up a third. That doesn't mean the tool is magic or trash. It means context is doing the heavy lifting.3️⃣ Content made for the masses misses you as an individual – You don't need to push through discomfort just because the internet says a protocol “should” work. For the full episode show notes, including the resources mentioned in this episode, go here.More from Pet HarmonyPet Parents: enrichment ideas and practical behavior tips

What to listen for:Our hosts, Robin Greubel and Stacy Barnett, sit down with canine cognition researcher Dr. Jennifer Essler. She unpacks her journey from coding Capuchin monkey videos in a windowless lab to studying fairness in wolves and dogs.Starting with music studies before discovering comparative psychology, Essler's academic trajectory took her from Georgia State's primate labs to hand-raised wolf packs in Vienna's Wolf Science Center. It's a unique research environment that controls for lifestyle differences between wolves and dogs by raising both species identically in packs. As a result, you can isolate domestication effects from environmental variables. The wolves, however, proved far more challenging subjects than primates, requiring complete experimental apparatus redesigns after initial safety failures. Her inequity aversion research uncovered pretty interesting species differences: wolves, like primates, showed quality sensitivity by refusing to work when partners received superior rewards.Dogs, conversely, accepted any reward as long as they received something, possibly reflecting their domestication-driven tolerance for human-directed work, or their reduced attention to partner outcomes.Robin, Stacy, and Dr. Essler discuss the practical implications this finding has for multi-dog training scenarios and reinforcement strategies.Essler's transition to Penn Vet Working Dog Center brought her expertise to practical applications: ovarian cancer detection, COVID-19 screening, and spotted lanternfly detection. All while developing behavioral assessment batteries. It's not just about staying on a bed or mat. It's about teaching emotional regulation, building coping skills, and creating a space where your dog can truly relax. We talk through why using “place” only during high-energy or stressful moments can backfire, how dogs form associations with their environment, and what calm actually looks like in training. You'll learn practical techniques for teaching place the right way, including leash guidance, spatial pressure, tethering, and how to gradually introduce distractions without creating anxiety. This episode is for dog owners who want more than obedience—who want their dogs to feel safe, settled, and confident in a busy world. On this episode of Dog Works Radio, professional dog trainers from Alaska Dog Works share practical dog training tips, discuss common dog behavior problems, and explain how positive dog training and dog training consistency create better behavior at home. In this episode of Dog Works Radio, the hosts delve into the importance of engagement in dog training, emphasizing that a dog's distraction often stems from boredom rather than stubbornness. They introduce the concept of turning training into a game, which not only makes the process enjoyable for the dog but also enhances learning and reliability. The discussion highlights the three C's of effective training: clear criteria, meaningful consequences, and consistency, and how these principles can be integrated into play-based training to foster a stronger bond between dogs and their owners. The hosts explain that play is not chaotic but rather a structured way to engage dogs, making them more likely to choose their owners over distractions. They provide practical examples of training games that can be easily implemented without special equipment, reinforcing the idea that fun and effective training can coexist. The episode concludes with a reminder that training should feel like a relationship rather than a chore, encouraging listeners to adopt a playful approach to dog training for better results. This episode we head to Soda Springs, Idaho to visit with Tony and Monica Rosen of Dirtbag Ranch—first-generation Texas Longhorn breeders and well-known Bloodhound breeders/trainers. We dig into how they built a Longhorn program from scratch, what they prioritize in structure and disposition, and how Idaho weather, forage, and terrain shape day-to-day decisions. Then we switch collars to talk Bloodhounds—breeding philosophy, training foundations, and how nose work, patience, and reading behavior carry over to working cattle.Tony and Monica share the realities of juggling two serious programs, winter prep and calving in the high country, fencing and handling for calm cattle, and the community that's helped them learn fast. It's a conversation about grit, good dogs, good cattle—and carving out a ranch identity on fresh ground.Dirtbag Ranch: https://www.dirtbagranchid.com/THE NOSE KNOWS: Missing local 8-year-old found safe thanks to community effort and bloodhound Miss MaeSend us a text From the Pasture with Hired Hand:Hired Hand Websites (@hiredhandwebsites): https://hiredhandsoftware.comHired Hand Live (@hiredhandlive): https://hiredhandlive.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/hiredhandwebsites/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/HiredHandSoftwareTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@hiredhandwebsitesNewsletter: https://www.hiredhandsoftware.com/resources/stay-informed
