'The good thing about pressure is that it lets you know that you care.' Billy Jean King. The difficulty comes in when you let the pressure build up too much that it spills over into our hobbies and sports, including pickleball. It's perfectly normal for players to start feeling pressure in terms of their performance but not to the point where you're not having fun or can't function anymore. Here are three ways to release pressure and help you stay focused and relaxed on the court;1. Between-Rally Pauses; A simple yet effective way to reset between rallies using brief pauses to take a mental step back. This allows your brain to slow down and it could be in form of paddle tap or removing the paddle from your hand to reduce tension and allow your body and mind to relax.2. Breathing Techniques; Focusing on your breath can help shift attention away from stressful thoughts and bring a sense of calm. In this episode I explain to you two techniques you can try to that bring focus and calmness.3. Change Your Approach Strategically; If a particular strategy or shot isn't working, it might be time for a tactical change. For instance, if you're struggling with your third shot drops, try driving the ball instead. This switch not only relieves pressure but can also improve your rhythm. In the RIFF I share with you why sticking to a successful formula during competitive play maximizes your chance of success, using an example of a PPA match that happened during the Mesa Cup.Anna Bright's great framing after the game; https://betterpickleball.com/232-anna-brights-positive-perspective-win-or-lose/Upcoming boot camp in March; https://betterpickleball.com/march-bootcamp/Get on our email list; https://betterpickleball.com/Check out Pickleheads website; https://www.pickleheads.com/Have a feedback? Life and business is not all 'Beer and Skittles'. Things do not always go right. If anything, more things go wrong than go right. The real question becomes 'How do you turn setbacks and pain into advantage and opportunity?' This podcast arose out of a phone call I had with a client who had some things going wrong in his business - and he was feeling down and dejected about it. This is what I told him. What you can learn from the legendary tennis player Billy Jean King about pain and setbacks. Listen here..
Amidst the pending Dobbs vs. Jackson Women's Health Organization Supreme Court case, how does miscarriage disrupt the ongoing debates over abortion rights? Fears over the potential demise of the famous 1973 Roe v. Wade has galvanized contemporary advocates of a woman's legal right to an abortion to share their stories of abortion out loud, with examples including tennis legend Billy Jean King. A woman's body orchestrating an abortion onto itself, a phenomenon that the field of medicine refers to as spontaneous abortion, is still a taboo. But this predicament is not uncommon. Mayo Clinic estimates that 10 to 20 percent of pregnancies end in miscarriage. Missing Attachments, episode 2 of Season 4, is a conversation on miscarriage with Ikhlas Saleem, a Moorish American Muslim mother of two children named Mohammed Ahmed and Nur Jannah. Naomi Osaka's decision to withdraw from the French Open rather than face a post match press conference became worldwide news. Osaka says her depression and anxiety make it impossible for her to speak in public. Most observers sympathize with Osaka's reserve, and castigate the tour directors for making her quit. But tennis legend Billy Jean King and most of Osaka's fellow players feel that successful players should appear publicly in order to raise the visibility and profitability of women's tennis. For herself, Osaka made $55 million last year— $50 million of it due to product endorsements. But her fellow pros often make nothing like that amount, and they resent Osaka's pulling away from public appearances, which would benefit all of them. What could resolve Osaka's predicament? Apparently treatment hasn't done so. Would practicing public speaking, Stanton and Zach wonder, be helpful? Stanton then reviews the history of confessionals by prominent people who have outed their substance and mental problems — including television comedian Sid Caesar, depression memoir (Darkness Visible) author William Styron, and CBS Sunday morning program host Jane Pauley. None provides good evidence that disease self-labeling and treatment lead to ultimate improvement. The American Temperance tradition is steeped in public confessions, which carried over to AA, and have now permeated the US. Yet depression, anxiety and bipolar diagnosis have been increasing dramatically in recent decades. Stanton and Zach discuss this never-ending cycle of self-defeating behavior, then what lies ahead for Osaka and the tennis program she abandoned. Finally, Stanton and Zach wonder about an article in a leading magazine saying that drinking is worse than ever in the US. But the author loves wine and wants to continue drinking it! Stanton and Zach wonder whether American attitudes towards alcohol have improved at all since Prohibition. ***** SUBSCRIBE to Our Channel ***** To get more of our content and help us grow: https://www.youtube.com/c/LifeProcessProgram?sub_confirmation=1 ***** FOLLOW us on Social ***** - Facebook: https://facebook.com/lifeprocessprogram - Twitter : https://twitter.com/lifeprocessprgm - Instagram: https://instagram.com/lifeprocessprogram - LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/company/life-process-program ***** CONTACT US ****** - Website: https://lifeprocessprogram.com - Text us: +1 (802) - 391 - 4360 --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/lifeprocessprogram/support
I am joined this week on the podcast by Dr. Frank Andre Guridy, historian of sport and society at Columbia University. Frank is also the author of the new book, The Sports Revolution: How Texas Changed the Culture of American Athletics.Frank provides a well-researched and historical analysis of how Texas revolutionized sports in the U.S. during the civil rights era. For example, the University of Houston and Southern Methodist University (SMU) in Dallas embraced the end of Jim Crow by integrating their football and basketball teams; while powerhouse football programs such as the University of Texas and Texas A&M were slow to integrate their programs. Frank also explained the importance of the Houston Astrodome in not only Texas but in the US during the 1960s and 70s; The "Eighth Wonder of the World" hosted legendary sporting events that revolutionized the culture of American athletics, such as the "Battle of the Sexes" tennis match between Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs, at the height of the second-wave feminist movement. Frank also talks to me about the connection between the San Antonio Spurs and the working-class Tejano/Mexican community of South Texas, plus much more. I also award this episode's Molotov MVP to former Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader and Xicana Tina Jimenez. In the summer of 1978, Jimenez and other ex-Cowboys cheerleaders started their own professional cheerleader organization known as the Dallas Cowgirls, Inc., to seek better opportunities and pay for their labor. To end the podcast, I introduce a new segment, "Xicano Sports History." Worry is a natural human emotion. But it doesn't serve you well when preparing for your standardized test and it doesn't have to be your story on test day. In 1995, she qualified as a coach and went on to initiate the Scottish Development School programme, which produced champion players including her sons, Jamie and Andy. At the age of 19, Judy trained as a tennis coach - something she’d become grateful for in 1994, after she became a full-time coach and initial trainer for her sons Andy and Jamie. In 2011. As a testament to her coaching ability, Judy was chosen to lead the British Fed Cup team as their captain. Judy flourished in this role, but she also had another incentive - to raise awareness of female coaches. Judy's mantra is "If you tell me I can't do something, I will go out of my way to prove you wrong" and we love her comments about people "Its not about what you have, but what you do with what you have and if you surround yourself with good people and you all work together you have no idea what can happen"In recognition of her contribution to tennis, female empowerment and charity fundraising, Judy was appointed an OBE in 2017. An advocate for the power of sport, she founded the Judy Murray Foundation, a charity that improves the opportunities for tennis in Scotland. This week’s movie looks at the depiction of the lead-up and the match itself in this 2017 movie, starring Emily Stone as Billy Jean King and Steve Carrel as Bobby Riggs. Join us as we examine how accurate this portrayal proves to be. Note: There are no clips this week due to the lack of available material which works in an audio format. Except right at the very end, featuring a comment by the real Billy Jean King

Man vs Woman. Billy Jean King vs Bobby Riggs. Emma Stone vs Steve Carell. Edward vs Alessia. OK, that’s enough of that. On this week’s episode, we focus on Battle of the Sexes which sees Emma Stone play Billy Jean King and Steve Carell as Bobby Riggs. What did we think of the movie? Listen […]
Can women play tennis? Are rich people arseholes? If you've ever asked yourself those questions then this is the podcast for you as we review two films that tackle them head-on. First up is the Emma Stone sports drama Battle of the Sexes, in which the recent Oscar winner plays Billy Jean King facing a series of adversities, namely: a failing marriage, rampant misogyny, and really unflattering glasses. Then we examine Michael Haneke's ironically titled Happy End, in which a group of sexy French people (and for some reason Toby Jones) act in increasingly deplorable ways. Plus we discuss our favorite 4th wall breaking moments in movies, discuss the latest project from Chris Morris and exhaustively break down every pixel of the Avengers: Infinity War trailer. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
With the release of the Emma Stone & Steve Carrell movie 'Battle of the Sexes', we look back at the actual event with Chronicle reporter Dale Robertson, who covered the historic Astrodome tennis match between Billy Jean King & Bobby Riggs. Robertson interviewed King the day after the match & developed a professional relationship with her over the years. He lets us in on a few things not in the movie & gives his thoughts on Riggs possibly throwing the match. Who's the best men's player of all-time? Robertson has thoughts on Federer, Nadal & Sampras.
Mandy and Kevin discuss two movies that depict famous tennis matches of the past. First is "Battle of the Sexes," starring Emma Stone and Steve Carell, which depicts the legendary 1973 tennis match between Billy Jean King and Bobby Riggs; and second is the Swedish film, "Borg/McEnroe" starring Sverrir Gudnason and Shia LaBeouf, which depicts the lives of two great tennis rivals, Bjorn Borg and John McEnroe, and the 1980 Wimbledon Final match they played which is widely considered the best tennis match ever played. In this episode we discuss the key differences between the winning and losing. We talk about what 2nd place means, participation trophies, how we celebrate our wins, how we process our losses and our advice to someone NOT accomplishing a long-term goal. We wrap the episode up with quotes from Billy Jean King & Vince Lombardi.

If you like “Kahnversations,” please leave a rating or review on our iTunes page! There are so many inspiring podcasts with fabulous stars out there. But their careers feel light years away from ours, don’t they? Wouldn’t it be great to hear from the guy who just booked his first pilot? Or the kid finally doing a studio pic after a bunch of low budget indies? Or the woman who’s been a series regular a few times but is only now becoming a name? What about the guy who’s been on a show for years and you know his face but what’shisnameagain? Or that actress who is now a freakin’ showrunner???? How’d THEY do it, right? How did they transition from relative obscurity, bartending and bottle service, to buying that house in Brentwood? We’re producing “Kahnversations,” a podcast that provides access to THOSE people -- your immediate predecessors -- so that you can learn from them while their battle scars are still fresh. In “Kahnversations,” our own Ryan Bailey interviews some of Lesly Kahn & Company’s working actors, directors, and writers in order to learn how they got started in Hollywood, the challenges and hurdles they faced, and how they overcame the odds. (They also dish out some crazy stories!) Listen in and enjoy as these entertainers speak candidly about their paths, processes, and experiences. You might even hear a bit about how Lesly and the Kahnstitute have influenced and shaped their careers.

Every held on to beat beat Henrik Stenson who was rattled over being put on clock for slow play. Rich B says Stenson and his group were one hole behind and that is unacceptable in tournament play. The Daytona Beach native won his first Tour event at the Arnold Palmer last year. He successfully defended his title this year at the API for his second tour win. Holly was at the press center and recorded some audio of Every's interview. She said that Every was refreshingly candid. Every spoke about the guy who was in the gallery at 18 and fake coughed "straight putt, straight putt." Every said he was thinking that this guy would have to be a real D&%$ to say something like that and it not be straight. Every sized up the putt and sunk it. He also talks about this win compared to the pressure after winning his first Tour event. Bob Harig ESPN.com, talks to Holly and Rich about the Arnold Palmer Invitational and Stenson's slow play. Bob wrote an article for ESPN.com that covered PGA putting Stenson and his partner on the clock a few times during the event that seemed to rattle Stenson on the 3rd time he was put on the clock. Bob wrote another article stating that Strokes not Fines is the way to end slow play. Tim Rosaforte, The Golf Channel, called in and talked with Holly and Rich about several topics around the golf world including the evolution of the The Golf Channel and what it takes a network to cover an event like the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Tim spoke with Holly and Rich about Tiger's chances of playing in the Masters. He said that it remains to be seen what will happen with Tiger. Ann Ligouri, Sports Radio and TV broadcaster, talks with Holly and Rich about her shows from the Sports Interview that she did for 17 years. Some of those old interviews are now available on Hulu and Amazon. Ann said that the show ran from 1989-2006. During that time she was able to complete more than 600 interviews and 59 are available already online. Interviews from Ted Williams, Billy Jean King, Mickey Mantle, Annika Sorenstam to Brett Favre. She is hoping that they will be converting her interview with Sam Snead and have it available online soon. Holly asks Ann how long she has been covering the Masters. "Since 1998." Ann has had the privilege twice to play the Monday after masters twice. Media members put their names in a lottery and are randomly chosen to play on the same set up at Augusta that is used for Sunday's final round including the pin placements. Lottery pin positions same as Sunday.

The orginal "Battle of the Sexes" was a title given to a set of three tennis matches between Bobby Riggs and Margaret Court. Riggs went on to have another battle with Billy Jean King.
