⭐The Thing from Another World (1951) - The Chilling Sci-Fi Horror Classic You Need to See!⭐
Night 12 of 13 Nights of Halloween brings us to the classic sci-fi horror, The Thing From Another World (1951)!
The PhilenApocalypse has been postponed! While Philena ain't too thrilled with this development, we were able to keep our already inconsistent schedule with this Howard Hawks double feature, which is like a PhilenApocalypse prequel because her contrarian take on Howard Hawks' screwball classic BRINGING UP BABY (1938) is what landed her on OMFYS. In short, she hates it--AFI Top 100 or no. Because of this, Bob programmed two wildly-different films from the versatile Hawks' filmography, and with wildly different results. First, we've got HIS GIRL FRIDAY (1940), another classic screwball comedy from Hawks. Cary Grant is Walter Burns, a conniving newspaper publisher who will go to criminal lengths to keep his best reporter and ex-wife, Hildy Johnson (Rosiland Russell) from leaving his paper so she can get remarried and "be a woman." Then, we've got the sci-fi classic THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951). The film's direction is credited to Christian Nyby, but the rumors that Hawks directed it persist. A favorite of Horror Master John Carpenter's, who remade it in 1982. In our opening segment, a discussion of the Tesla Cybertruck devolves into Greg and Bob horrifying Philena by explaining the concept of Andrew "Dice" Clay to her in one of the funniest moments we've ever recorded. We also talk about the horrors of something called Skibidi Toilet for some reason. Plus there are thrills as Greg almost plunges the podcast into chaos as he attempts to win a record on eBay. Does Greg prevail and what is the record? Was it all worth it? Listen and find out! Before John Carpenter's iconic adaptation of the novella "Who Goes There?'', another director brought the story to life and inspired a generation of filmmakers. But was it directed by Christian Nyby or was it actually Howard Hawks? How does the 50s classic hold up to a modern viewing? This episode was formerly a Patreon-exclusive! More B-movie fun this week as we discuss 'The Thing from Another World' from director Christian Nyby (produced and written by Howard Hawks), a film best known today as the film that John Carpenter would remake in the 1980s. Expect conversation about both films from the get-go.
Nowadays horror remakes are a dime a dozen. But if you were to ask any contemporary horror fan what their favorite remake of all time is, chances are they'll say John Carpenter's 1982 remake of The Thing From Another World. Or as he called it, The Thing. But what was it about that first film which made Carpenter want to tackle it at the pinnacle of his career? And what about the 2011 Mary Elizabeth Winstead starring attempt to reboot (retell, sequelize) it? Join myself, Matt, and the returning Mik Duffy as we attempt to answer these questions. There have been many filmmakers covered on the Binge Movie Aftertaste. But one which has been left out in the cold is Howard Hawks. Often called one of the greatest storytellers of all time, Hawks had done everything from the original Scarface to Red River. But in 1951, Hawks took it upon himself to enter the realm of science fiction by adapting the story Who Goes There by John A Stewart. But while the directing credit lies with Christian Nyby, ther are people who say it was actually Hawks who directed the film. So what is the real story? And what is it about this movie which has everyone from Ridley Scott to Quentin Tarantino citing it as a major influence on their careers? Listen in as we discuss that very, uhhhh, thing. There have been three adaptations of John Campbell's short story: THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD (1951), THE THING (1982), and THE THING (2011). Just like their monster, these movies shapeshift with their era: Is the alien a metaphor for the atom bomb, or Communism? Masculinity or feminism? Across these decades, each movie showcases wildly different special and visual effects, while tackling the themes of their era. We discuss how the classic 50s sci-fi, directed by Christian Nyby and Howard Hawks, pits scientists against the military, while John Carpenter's remake, starring Kurt Russell, Keith David, and Donald Moffat, replaces propaganda with a brooding atmosphere. We then explore womanhood and studio interference in the 2011 prequel, starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Joel Egerton. Remake-es évadunkban megnéztük az 1951-es The Thing from Another World című filmet Howard Hawkstól (A lény - egy másik világból) és a John Carpenter-féle 1982-es The Thing című filmet (A dolog). Mai szemmel mennyire félelmetes a filmklasszikus, amelyen cidriztek a korabeli nézők? Miket emel át a film a kisregényből, miket emel át ebből a filmből az 1982-es feldolgozás, és hogyan egészíti ki a kapcsolati rendszert a Nyolcadik utas: a Halál? Aztán végképp áttérünk John Carpenter horror-mesterűvének a kitárgyalására. Meg lehet jegyezni a tucatnyi szereplőt? Ma is működnek a rémisztések? We're once again wondering WHATEVER HAPPENED TO VIC DIAZ? in 1965's OPERATION C.I.A., which features Burt Reynolds as Mark Andrews, an agent sent to Saigon (here played by Thailand) as the Vietnam war is heating up in order to stop an assassination. While this Bond-inspired spy film from director Christian Nyby is pretty uneventful, it features a great supporting villainous turn from Vic Diaz, and some two-fisted fun from a mustache-less Reynolds. LET'S WATCH! The post Episode 17 – Whatever Happened to Vic Diaz? – Operation C.I.A. (1965) appeared first on Cinema Smorgasbord.
The original sci-fi classic about an alien who crashes his spacecraft in the North Pole and wreaks havoc on the military personnel who attempt to research their supernatural discovery. Credited to Christian Nyby as the director, but actually ghost directed by Howard Hawks.
It is midnight in Cozy Corner and around the world. Pour yourself a cup of coffee, bundle up and get ready to travel down to Outpost 31. March is John Carpenter month on the Late Night Fright. The next film up is his 1982 masterpiece THE THING starring Kurt Russell. Still waters run deep but paranoia runs deeper. THE THING was critically reviled upon its initial release but became a cult film upon its home video release and has undergone a critical reevaluation since then. The film is based upon the novella WHO GOES THERE by John Campbell, Jr., editor of ASTOUNDING SCIENCE FICTION. Howard Hawks produced a successful 1951 version entitled THE THING FROM OUTER SPACE directed by Christian Nyby, a film Carpenter admires very much. Truer to the source material, THE THING, adapted by Bill Lancaster, chronicles what happens when Snake Plissken plays a game of chess with a shape shifting alien. Featuring a score by Ennio Morricone and wonderful supporting performances, THE THING may just be Carpenter's masterpiece. The first episode of this two parter deals with the history of the story, Carpenter's signature style, thematic elements and the score. Join us...if you dare!!!
In 1951, producer Howard Hawks and director Christian Nyby drew on the current flying saucer craze and a 1938 novella to create an amazingly tight movie of survival at the North Pole: The Thing From Another World.
Welcome the newest episode of Dark Discussions, your place for the discussion of horror film, fiction, and all that’s fantastic. John W. Campbell’s novella, WHO GOES THERE?, published in 1938 in considered one of the greatest science fiction horror stories of all time. It isn’t surprising that it has been made into, though loosely, into at least adaptations. That doesn’t include the influence it had on other stories such as THE BODY SNATCHERS by Jack Finney. In 1951, producer Howard Hawks THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD, the first adaptation, received roaring reviews and is considered a classic. An air force base in Anchorage receives a call from scientist Arthur Carrington near the North Pole that an unusual aircraft has crashed. Captain Ned Scott and crew are sent up north to help investigate. When the scientists and the air force soldiers arrive at the crash site, they found a remarkable discovery. Taking back their findings to the outpost, they unexpectedly unleash a horror that none of them ever had seen before. The film starred a group of well known character actors and was directed by Howard Hawks prodigy, Christian Nyby. The films box office beat such other classic science fiction films as THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL (1951) and WHEN WORLDS COLLIDE (1951). Dark Discussions takes a look at this film which fell right in the middle of the Cold War and said a lot about a world that recently fought a world war. We live in an era of remakes and sequels. With that mind, Corey (@coreyrstarr) and Jonathan (@berkreviews) realized there were several films they've seen and loved that were, in fact, remakes of older movies. Thus, the theme for August became Originals! That is to say movies that have been remade that either Jonathan or Corey hasn't seen the source material but has seen the remake. This required a bit of research to pick the movies for this month, but the two did a great job of finding some real classics they have never seen. August will have five episodes so Corey got to pick three movies to Jonathan's two. As far as the podcast goes, each episode features an in-depth review of the movie for the week. They begin with a spoiler-free review before diving in completely after the needed spoiler warning. However, before getting into the review of the week, Jonathan and Corey discuss what other movies they've seen since the last episode as well as anything else they feel like discussing. To help them decide which of the many films to watch each month they started creating themes for them all. Week 1 - The Thing From Another World (1951) Both Corey and Jonathan are big fans of John Carpenter's The Thing (1982), but neither has ever seen the original film that inspired it. The Thing From Another World (1951) is directed by Christian Nyby and, as the legend goes, Howard Hawks. If you've seen Carpenter's film you'll recognize aspects of the plot, but it is slightly different. Here Scientists and American Air Force, led by Capt. Patrick Hendry (Kenneth Tobey), officials fend off a bloodthirsty alien organism while at a remote arctic outpost. --- Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/berkreviewscom-moviecasts/support
We get an example of a remake surpassing the original this week when we watched The Thing (1982), John Carpenter's gore de force remake of 1951's The Thing From Another World. Join us as we learn what happens when Kurt Russel loses at chess, why I'm more of a cat person, and that Wilford Brimley can go 109 minutes without saying oatmeal or diabeetus.

We discuss classic 50s sci fi horror 'The Thing From Another World.'The film is Directed by Christian Nyby and stars Margaret Sheridan, Kenneth Tobey and Robert Cornthwaite.
Regardless of what our dear host Niki D. thinks, this is one of the great harbingers of the sci-fi explosion of the 1950's! A story line that has been used over and over again--a small group trapped in a secluded area with a vicious monster on the prowl--seldom done better than in this film, directed by Christian Nyby and over-lorded by the redoubtable Howard Hawks!
Way back in , 's Chris McMillan joined Derek to discuss their Top Three Favorite Monster Movies, and this week, on Episode #253, Chris is on the podcast to discuss his Number Two pick - 1951's The Thing from Another World (dir. Christian Nyby). There's a reason why this film made Chris' list, and there's a good chance it may creep up on Derek's Top Three the more he thinks about it! Also, while discussing the film, Derek realizes an odd, tenuous connection he almost had with this film. A group of scientists and military men are dispatched to find out what happened. And so begins an epic struggle for the fate of planet Earth. We are treated to a great horror/sci-fi film in this 1951 adaptation of the John W. Campell Jr. novel. Featuring a fast paced, witty script by Charles Lederer and directed by Christian Nyby (and Howard Hawks uncredited) with expert acting by Margaret Sheridan, Kenneth Tobey, Robert Cornthwaite, James Arness and others, this film offers great atmosphere, a few memorable jump scares and a monster to rival any monster to ever appear in film. “Watch the skies. Keep watching the skies!”
