Imagine you're at home when you hear a knock. At your door are people who want you to share, in detail, who you voted for in the last election, months ago. When you ask them who they are and where they're from, they remain vague and perhaps even aggressive. This was the case for some Americans in the years after the 2020 election, part of a spate of behaviors by election skeptics and deniers that, in some cases, amounted to voter intimidation. The history of voter intimidation in the United States is sordid and violent, especially in the century between the U.S. Civil War and the passage of strong voter protections in the 1960s. But it's important to remember that voter intimidation is against the law. Whether you're voting in-person, by mail or via election dropbox, you should never be made to feel unsafe or intimidated while exercising your freedom to vote..Carly Koppes, the clerk and recorder of Colorado's enormous Weld County, describes to us the steps she and fellow officials took when they received reports of unwelcome and unofficial vigilante election “auditors” going door to door in 2021. Christina Das of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund walks us through the bleak history of voter intimidation in America. And CLC's Jonathan Diaz explains how voter intimidation has evolved to become sneakier and more subversive in the digital age — and the steps you can take if you encounter it.Nationwide nonpartisan Election Protection (EP) hotline:866-OUR-VOTE (866-687-8683)Host and Guests:Simone Leeper litigates a wide range of redistricting-related cases at CLC, challenging gerrymanders and advocating for election systems that guarantee all voters an equal opportunity to influence our democracy. Prior to arriving at CLC, Simone was a law clerk in the office of Senator Ed Markey and at the Library of Congress, Office of General Counsel. She received her J.D. cum laude from Georgetown University Law Center in 2019 and a bachelor's degree in political science from Columbia University in 2016.Carly Koppes has been working in the Weld County Clerk and Recorder's office for twenty years starting in June of 2004. Her main department was the Election department, but she has also worked in the Recording and Motor Vehicle departments during her time working for the Clerk and Recorder office. She received her Colorado Election Official Certification from the Colorado Secretary of State in October 2007 and finished up her national designation of Certified Elections/Registration Administrators (CERA) through the Elections Center's Professional Education Program at Auburn University in July of 2014. Carly is a 2016 graduate of the Leadership Program of the Rockies and in 2019 she received her Public Leadership certification from Pepperdine University through the International Association of Government Officials. Carly was also honored along with the Colorado County Clerks Association to receive the Defender of Democracy Award from The Center for Election Innovation and Research in 2022. In 2023 Carly was appointed to the national Local Leadership Council of the Election Assistance Commission and was elected as the Vice Chair of the Council. Carly is the youngest person to be elected to the position of Weld County Clerk and Recorder.  Carly is currently serving on the Executive Board for the Colorado County Clerks Association; Carly was President of the Colorado County Clerks Association in 2021 and will serve as President in 2026.Christina Das is Counsel on the Black Voters on the Rise team with LDF, an interdisciplinary team leading year-round election protection and election administration advocacy efforts across the South, using legal, organizing, and advocacy tools to defend and advance the rights of Black voters to participate in our democracy. Christina's experience includes executing strategic campaigns to expand voter access, such as passing legislation for in-person Early Voting in South Carolina in 2022 and working with state-based coalitions to implement jail-based polling places for eligible detained individuals across Texas. She co-leads the national Election Protection Working Group for Jail and Post-Release Voting and has been working with system impacted individuals over the past four years to break down procedural barriers to accessing the ballot behind bars. Christina will lead LDF's election protection program in Texas for the 2024 cycle and support ongoing litigation efforts. Trust in the election system in Arizona is eroding. Some may even say it's broken all together. One side says the vulnerability of voting machines and delay in election results is what makes the system distrustful. This was most obvious during the Maricopa County recount of the 2020 ballots that lasted months. The other side says it's the new found distrust in the system that makes it broken. But either way a question remains among most American, and specifically Arizonan, voters: how can we make elections better? This question fuels the work of David Becker. He is a co-founder of the Center for Election Innovation and Research and he believes that technology and reliance on data can help us toward improving elections. He also helped launch the Election Official Legal Defense Network, which connections election officials with free legal advice. This week on Election Dissection, an elections series of The Gaggle podcast by The Arizona Republic and azcentral.com, hosts Mary Jo Pitzl and Sasha Hupka sit down with Becker to discuss why he's confident in the safety of our elections systems, how America ended up in this position and why he's keeping an eye on those who oppose Donald Trump come next January. Segers, who joined the fire department in 1988, was instrumental in promoting fire safety and education in the community. She was the first person in Georgia to obtain credentials as an NPQ Fire Safety Educator and made significant contributions to the field. After her retirement in 2005, Segers continued volunteering with the department until her passing in May 2022. The state introduced automatic registration in 2016, updating voter records whenever an individual updates their driver's license information. The report also highlights that 97% of Georgians have both a driver's license and Social Security number associated with their voter registration, improving the accuracy of voter rolls. The registration rate has become more representative of Georgia's population, with a narrower gap between the overall population of younger voters and registered voters. Automatic voter registration has proven successful, saving taxpayer dollars and reducing voter challenges.   Story 3: 500k   The Cherokee Sheriff's Office has been awarded a $518,000 grant from the state to purchase new license plate-reading cameras. The funds will be used to buy 35 Flock Safety cameras, which can capture license plates, and cover their maintenance for five years. The grant is part of a larger allocation of over $83 million for public safety projects throughout the state. The funding aims to enhance law enforcement staffing, support violent crime reduction initiatives, and invest in technology and equipment to address community violence exacerbated by the pandemic. The 2020 election season and its aftermath is perhaps one of the most tumultuous times in recent history: bringing longstanding tensions in America into violent relief and testing core pillars of the democratic process as never before. Just how did America get here and where do we go now? State of Democracy: PBS Newshour's Hari Sreenivasan, The New Yorker's Jill Lepore, Yuval Levin of the American Enterprise Institute, and Harvard professor Danielle Allen discuss vital questions about American democracy, whom it serves and how it functions. How America Votes: Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson, Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger, and David Becker, Executive Director of The Center for Election Innovation and Research, introduced by Evette Alexander of the Knight Foundation. The Role of the Press: The Appeal's Josie Duffy Rice, Wesley Lowery of 60 Minutes+ and CBS News, NYU journalism professor Jay Rosen, and ProPublica's Stephen Engelberg.

Courtney R. Snowden (@DMGEOSnowden) is Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity for the District of Columbia. A sixth-generation Washingtonian born at Howard University Hospital, Courtney was raised in the Shepherd Park neighborhood of Ward 4, and now lives east of the river (EOTR) in Ward 7 with her young son, Malik.  The Washington Post has recognized Courtney for her “keen understanding of the need to connect neighborhoods if the city is to thrive. She understands policy, is adept at building coalitions and is both smart and passionate about education reform.”  Courtney is a graduate of DC Public Schools and received her B.A. in Political Science in 2000 from Beloit College. After graduating, Courtney returned home to the District to join the legislative staff of Congresswoman Tammy Baldwin (D-WI) on Capitol Hill. Courtney has devoted her life to making Washington, DC, a better place for all its residents, corner to corner. She has a record of coalition building and bringing people from different backgrounds together from across the city. As a principal at The Raben Group, a premiere progressive government relations firm, she advises the firm's clients on a variety of public policy issues through direct lobbying, strategic planning, and coalition building. Her diverse client portfolio includes Google, the Committee for Education Funding, the National Urban League, and Graham Holdings. An active leader in the city's LGBT and African-American communities and a staunch public education advocate, Courtney served as the first female board chair of DC Black Pride in 2008, and was an active member of the DC GLBT Advisory Committee. In this episode, we discussed: how the City of Washington has changed over time and DC Mayor Muriel Bowser's economic development vision going forward. how the Mayor's office is working with educators to prepare students who live in the District for careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM). efforts in the District to promote diversity and inclusion in the City's growing start-up sector. Resources: DC.gov - Office of the Deputy Mayor for Greater Economic Opportunity Americanah by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie On Beauty by Zadie Smith NEWS ROUNDUP The FCC has fined Comcast $2.3 million--the largest ever civil penalty on a cable operator for a practice called “negative option billing” where customers were charged for equipment and services they never requested. Comcast's response to the fine? Sorry--we didn't do anything wrong--it's just that we had some isolated incidents where our customer service representatives were just kind of confusing. Richard Gonzalez has the story for NPR. ---- The nonprofit Center for Election Innovation and Research is crediting  Facebook for registering thousands of new voters nationwide. Just in California, the 17-word reminder led to over 123,000 new voter registrations on the first day alone. While Facebook was unable to provide demographic data about the new registrations, Facebook's users are generally seen as leaning female, young and Democratic. Niraj Chokshi has the story in The New York Times. ---- The American Civil Liberties Union, Center for Media Justice and Color of Change reported last week that Facebook, Instagram and Twitter provided data access to a company called Geofeedia--a company sells a product that monitors social media activity, and which has been marketed to law enforcement officials looking for intel on protesters. The advocacy groups obtained emails of Geofeedia corresponding with law enforcement about the success the company has had monitoring recent protests in Ferguson and elsewhere. Facebook and Instagram have cut off Geofeedia's access to its main public feeds. Twitter hasn't cut off access, but the ACLU's press release notes the social media network has taken steps to rein in Geofeedia. ---- Finally, it looks like billionaire investor Peter Thiel has alienated himself from a major diversity and inclusion partner after he donated $1.25 million to Donald Trump, days after Trump was caught on tape making lewd comments about sexually assaulting women. Project Include co-Founder Ellen Pao, a leader in the tech diversity debate in Silicon Valley, wrote in a Medium post that she was cutting ties with the incubator Peter Thiel Founded--Y Combinator, saying Project Include and Y Combinator's values are no longer aligned given Thiel's continued affiliation with Y Combinator.
