“The part I also really love is finding the edges: How do we pursue the elite edge of world-class performance? I think as I've gotten further, that part is exciting me more and more as we go on here. But it doesn't have to just be world- class – how do you get people to find out how good they can really be?”When Chris Miltenberg took the helm at North Carolina in 2019, the Tar Heels distance programs had not won an ACC cross country title since before most of his current athletes were born. Fast forward to today and under Miltenberg's leadership, UNC has not only climbed back to the top of the ACC podium in cross country, indoor, and outdoor track, but they've reestablished themselves as a legitimate national contender too.Miltenberg has led UNC to top ten finishes at the NCAA cross country, indoor, and outdoor championships, he's coached Parker Wolfe to UNC's first-ever 5000m outdoor national title, signed the program's highest ranked recruiting class, and has built a culture of buy-in, belief, and bold ambition. Most recently, he's coming off an indoor season where Ethan Strand broke the collegiate records in the 3000m and mile before taking the NCAA title. Makayla Paige won the women's 800m to become the Tar Heels' first women's NCAA champion since 2018.But this isn't just a North Carolina story; Miltenberg's impact has been felt at every stop. At Stanford, he led the Cardinals to a top five program of the year finish and coached national champions like Grant Fisher, Sean McGorty, and Elise Cranny. At Georgetown, he guided the Hoyas to the 2011 NCAA Women's Cross Country title with the team that was led by Emily Infeld. In today's conversation, we talk about how he's building something sustainable in Chapel Hill, his approach to culture, and what it takes to coach through transitions, setbacks, and expectations. We also dig into athlete development, milestone moments, and why being present is one of the most underrated skills a coach can have.Hosts: Chris Chavez | @chris_j_chavez on InstagramGuest: Chris Miltenberg | @chris.miltenberg on Instagram SUPPORT OUR SPONSORSOLIPOP: Big name sodas are rolling out bold new flavors in 2025, but the real buzz is happening in the prebiotic pop aisle. “I still have a lot of potential that I see in myself and I have a lot I want to do. I still really care about this. I don't want to fade into the distance. I really want to leave a mark still. I feel like there's still stones left unturned.” My guest for today's episode is Emily Infeld, who has been a mainstay on the U.S. women's distance running scene on the track for the past decade. She is a world championship medalist in the 10,000m, a 2016 U.S. Olympian, and now a Brooks sponsored athlete getting ready to navigate an exciting new chapter.  After a challenging 2024 season filled with injury and transition, Emily is poised for a comeback that blends her love of track racing with aspirations for longer distances on the roads. In this episode, we talk about her decision to join Brooks, her reflections on the past 12 years being part of the Nike Bowerman Track Club, Team Boss, being coached by John Green, and why she's chasing one more big track season. She also opens up about the highs and lows of injury setbacks, the investment by shoe brands into women in their 30s, and why she believes her best days are still ahead, whether it's on the track, the roads, or even the marathon. "If you're not having fun with it, I think you're going to look back in a few years once you retire and be like, ‘You know what, maybe I didn't handle it the right way. I was too serious with it.' You can have fun with it, enjoy it and still do well. Everybody was talking about how Molly wasn't taking it seriously – No. We were taking it super seriously in Sapporo and Tokyo in everything we were doing. Having fun is also super important and I think that improves their performance at the end of the day. People can look at it and be like, ‘Oh they're joking around and having fun.' But yeah, we joke around, we have fun but we perform, which is what matters at the end of the day.” Jon Green is a former All-American from Georgetown who ran professionally for a brief time after college but now he's most known for his coaching credentials. At 27 years old, he's coached someone to an Olympic team and an Olympic bronze medal in Tokyo. That someone is Molly Seidel, who used to be his teammate but then they teamed up together in October 2019 and it's been history ever since. Jon was the coach for Mary Cain's professional women's running team in New York City called Atalanta NYC but just recently passed the torch to Julia Lucas since he's decided to move to Flagstaff, Arizona to coach Molly and former Bowerman Track Club runner and 10K world championship bronze medalist Emily Infeld. His squad is going by Verde Track Club – a super creative name. In this episode, hear more about his plans for the team and his coaching offerings for everyone from post-collegiate runners to everyday joggers like me or possibly you. We also touched on how Jon keeps everything fun and that's at the heart of Verde Track Club's ethos. “I'm a bit bummed with how it went, but that's why I want to get back into more racing. I know I'm fitter than that showcased, and I want to just have fun with racing, because the Olympics are obviously the pinnacle of our sport, but I think there's so much more aside from that. So I want to have fun with all that, and do what I love, and not feel like because I didn't make this team it was a failure of a year or I'm a failure of an athlete.”   Emily Infeld arrived at the start line for this year's U.S. Olympic Track & Field Trials 10K last month with an impressive running resumé. She's a professional runner with the Bowerman Track Club, specializing in the 5K and 10K. She's a 2016 Olympian and a 2015 World Championships bronze medalist. But along the way, Emily has also been plagued with injuries — one major injury, she says, for every year of her professional career. In spite of injuries, surgeries, and setbacks, Emily has persevered and built immeasurable mental toughness along the way. So when she got to Hayward Field, she had one goal: Make another Olympic team. Unfortunately, like all but three of the athletes that day, Emily didn't finish in the top three, and missed out on this year's Team USA. On this episode, she recaps the long road to the Trials, breaks down that hot race in heartbreaking detail, and talks about what's next.   SPONSOR: AfterShokz — Visit ontherun.aftershokz.com for 15% off wireless headphones.   What you'll get on this episode: On racing the 1500m for the first time in eight years (4:30) Has running always been fun for Emily? This meet, organized by Sound Running, consists of just two races, both featuring small elite fields targeting the Olympic standards of 27:28.00 (men) and 31:25.00 (women). Currently, just three American men (Lopez Lomong, Eric Jenkins, and Shadrack Kipchirchir) and nine American women have the standard. It’s been a big few years for professional runner and Olympian Kate Grace. In 2016, the Yale graduate won the Olympic Trials in the 800-meter event in Eugene, OR, and went on to represent Team USA in Rio, where she finished eighth. She chased that with a personal best in the 800 meters in Zurich, running a 1:59.47. A few months later, Kate's contract with Oiselle, her sponsor of four years and her first major professional sponsor, was up, and she announced her decision to join Nike, the industry behemoth despised by many at Oiselle. Then, this past fall, Kate officially joined Portland, OR-based Bowerman Track Club, where she now trains alongside some of professional running’s greatest, fastest women, including Shalane Flanagan, Amy Cragg, and Emily Infeld, and is coached by Jerry Schumacher. On this episode, Kate lets us all inside the head of a hardworking athlete and Olympian. She shares what it’s like training with some of the fastest women in the world, and talks about the “not glamorous” parts of racing. She explains her recent sponsorship decisions, breaks down how to master the 800m, and talks about why the 800-meter race at the Trials was “a shitshow.” Plus, Kate shares what it’s like competing at the Oympics — and what the athlete’s village is really like — and talks about how to deal with injuries, her fitness-world-famous mom, the comeback she’s hoping for this February, and what’s next. In today's episode, I interview professional long distance runner Emily Infeld.  Emily was one of the first women to join Jerry Schumacher's Portland-based running group, the Bowerman Track Club, which encompasses some of the best runners in the world.   One of my favorite things about our conversation, is that despite Emily's bubbliness and positivity, she candidly shares her internal struggles-including when she suffered a stress fracture just months before the Olympic trials (the race she'd been training for the past four years). In her lowest state, after a couple weeks of coping via snarfing down peanut butter and bon bons in bed, Emily persevered by accepting where she was and giving her best on that given day. Her strategies worked as she competed in the 2016 Summer Olympics and earned a 3rd place in the World Championship finals.
