Each year the Western Governors' Foundation, the philanthropic arm of the Western Governors' Association, hosts a competition that challenges high school students to create a piece of artwork that is inspired by their state. Now in its eighth year, Celebrate the West generates hundreds of amazing pieces created by budding western artists. The application window for this year's competition opened on January 9th. The deadline for entries is April 30th. In today's episode of Out West, Anna Thielen, the Western Governors' Foundation Manager, speaks with last year's winner, Michelle Lin, about what inspired her acrylic painting titled Unity. Anna also speaks with Sharron Rouse, one of the art experts on the Celebrate the West judging panel, about what made Michelle's painting stand out. She also speaks with Thomas Wiberg, the third recipient of WGF's Award for Outstanding High School Art Educator, about the importance of art education in the West.
Javier Morales interviews the Sunnyside Little League Intermediate team that reached the semifinal round of the West Regional tournament at Nogales this summer.

In March 2000, the eighth-seeded Wisconsin Badgers rushed through the West Regional, defeating Arizona, LSU, and Purdue to claim the Badgers first Final Four appearance in more than 59 years. Though the Badgers Cinderella run ended with Final Four loss in Indianapolis to Big Ten foe and eventual national champ Michigan State, that Wisconsin squad helped elevate the Badgers, long a middling Big Ten program, into a March Madness regular.. Wisconsin would make the Big Dance every year over the next 17 seasons, including two additional Final Four runs under Bo Ryan.Today, we're going to discuss that memorable Badgers run with the team's leading scorer, 6-9 forward Mark Vershaw, and seek to understand how an 8-8 Big Ten team, one that never cracked the AP Top 25, one that didn't feature a single all-conference selection – not even an honorable mention nod – defied the odds and captured a spot in the Final Four. The Stories Page - https://19nine.com/blogs/newsOur other Podcasts - https://19nine.com/blogs/news/19nine-podcastsLeave us a Review!APPLE PODCASTSSPOTIFY19Nine's YouTube ChannelWatch video interviews (Aaron's YouTube)FOLLOW!19Nine Instagram19Nine Twitter
When the brackets came out, there was little chance that the nastiest rivals ever to play college basketball were going to meet. That is, until the regional finals when Duke beat up Arkansas at the West Regional in San Francisco. The following day, North Carolina squashed the Cinderella dreams of the first Number 15 seed to reach the Elite Eight in tiny St. Peter's at the East Regional in Philadelphia. And so, the 258th all-time meeting between the state school and the private, elitist school separated by only eight miles will clash on college basketball's biggest stage. Think of the other huge rivalries in sports: New York Yankees vs. Boston Red Sox, San Francisco Giants vs. Los Angeles Dodgers; Chicago Bears vs. Green Bay Packers, Boston Celtics vs. Los Angeles Lakers. If you are talking college football, you have Ohio State vs. Michigan, USC vs. Notre Dame, Auburn vs. Alabama, and in recent years with Alabama vs. Georgia. Of course, there is that other vicious rivalry featuring pure animosity every December when Kentucky battles Louisville. Most of that is usually one sided, and when they collided at the 2012 Final Four--the fans liquored up a storm on Bourbon Street, and more of the same was expected this week way down yonder in New Orleans. Saturday night, April 2, 2022 is going to be ten thousand times bigger than that. All week, it has been 24/7/365 chatter on sports talk radio, Twitter, and YouTube. Although my podcast sets up as a short primer, please tap on your phone or click on the link below for those who have either a desktop or a laptop to read my comprehensive Final Four preview. And yes, I did touch on a bit of the first semifinal between Kansas and Villanova, but there isn't too much to talk about there. Enjoy, and please leave some comments before the approximate 8:50 p.m. Eastern time tip-off Saturday night on TBS: https://fortyminutesofhoopsfun.wordpress.com/2022/04/01/2022-final-four-preview-too-many-blueblood-storylines-to-count/ --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/bigzman34/message
Josh Smith, Dustin Shoe, and Raul Clement react to Duke's incredible wins over Texas Tech and Arkansas to send Coach K to his 13th Final Four. Next up: a UNC preview pod later this week.
The Portland Trail Blazers get the tank back on track in Atlanta, dropping the first game of a 5-game trip for the Blazers, 122-113. While the Blazers are clearly leaning heavily on the idea of ping pong balls at the NBA Draft lottery, they've now figured out that losing by historic margins doesn't actually improve their odds and as such have found ways to make the past couple games a bit more competitive. The player leading the charge? None other than Josh Hart, who followed up his 44-point bid with a 31-point, 7-rebound, 4-assist night. Plus we saw ANOTHER 20+ point performance from Trendon Watford (22 points, 9 rebounds) serving as the...what 6th version of a Blazers 1-2 punch this season? The Blazers now head off to New York to take on the Knicks and then to Brooklyn for the Nets (Portland might even stay in the same hotel?) before a back-to-back against the Indiana Pacers and Detroit Pistons. Hop on in and discuss tonight's game - the play of the young guys and the NCAA Tournament with Chet Holmgren and Jalen Duren in Portland for the West Regional bracket and more! Six-time Pacific West Conference Coach of the Year Jon Judkins is in his 14th season on the Dixie State bench, where he has compiled a 244-117 overall record, including a 224-105 mark during DSU’s NCAA Division II era. Last season he led the Trailblazers to a school-record 23 victories (23-7), which included a school-record 17-game winning streak, along both the 2018 Pacific West Conference regular season championship and second PacWest tournament crown, to become the first head coach in that conference's history to sweep both titles twice in the same season. Judkins also guided Dixie State to its eighth NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2016-17, Judkins led Dixie State to a 19-9 overall record, which included a 16-4 (3rd place) mark in Pacific West Conference play, and his 500th-coaching victory in a home win over Hawai’i Hilo on January 28, 2017. In 2015-16, Judkins led Dixie State to an 18-9 overall record and a 15-5 PacWest mark, which was good for a t-first place finish in the league standings. Overall, Judkins has led the Trailblazers to 10-straight winning seasons with seven 20-win campaigns, which includes 22 victories in the 2010-11 and 2012-13 seasons. He has also guided them to six Pacific West Conference championships overall, including four-straight titles from 2009-13 and another crown in 2014-15, along with a PacWest Tournament title in 2013. In addition, Judkins has led Dixie State to eight trips to the NCAA Tournament in the last nine seasons overall from 2010-17, advancing all the way to the “Sweet 16” in the 2011 West Regional final. In 12 years of NCAA play, Judkins has made the Burns Arena one of the most difficult home court advantages in the Division II ranks. During his tenure, Judkins-coached teams are 112-23 (.829) overall inside the Burns Arena, which includes a dominant 87-12 (.878) mark in PacWest play, with seven 10-win seasons overall. Additionally, Dixie State is 113-83 (.576) away from home during the Judkins-era, 89-62 (.589) in true road games and 24-21 (.533) in neutral-site contests. Prior to his arrival at Dixie State, Judkins served as head coach at Snow College for 12 full seasons and part of another season (1992-93), and posted a 284-128 overall record. He led the Badgers to a pair of Scenic West Athletic Conference titles in 1999 and 2000, which earned him SWAC Coach of the Year honors. Prior to becoming head coach at Snow, Judkins was an assistant coach at Snow from 1988-1993, and served as interim head coach for the final 11 games of the 1992-93 season. In 2014, Judkins was inducted into the Snow College Athletic Hall of Fame. Judkins played for one season at Dixie State (junior college) in the 1983-84 season before transferring to Utah State, where he became the first Aggie to post a triple-double. During the 1987-88 season, he helped lead the Aggies to the PCAA title and an NCAA Tournament bid. A native of Salt Lake City, Judkins graduated from USU with a Bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1988. He and his wife, Lanette, are the parents of four children - Jaelle, Janessa, and twins Justin and Jillian. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Welcome to Episode 19 of The Podcast About Division III Baseball. This is the third of our eight postseason regional preview podcasts -- this one focuses on the 6-team West Regional which will take place in Spokane, WA. We break down each of the six teams. In order: #1 Chapman (at 1:44) After an enormous statement in the SCIAC championship game, can the Panthers live up to the #1 seed and make it to Appleton? #6 Willamette (at 4:12) The Bearcats have had a lot of time off since winning the NWC title; how far can Connor Bailey and Matt Steindorf take them? #2 Redlands (at 6:14) Perhaps the most balanced all-around team in the West, the Bulldogs will look to avenge their disappointing conference tournament with a strong regional showing #5 Texas-Dallas (at 9:20) The Comets got hot at the right time, and are ready to try and outscore any and all opponents #3 Concordia-Texas (at 11:42) The numbers don't jump off the page, but there are many reasons to fear the Tornados in a regional setting #4 Texas Lutheran (at 15:14) The Bulldogs have felt like a team of destiny all year long; Riley Schaefer/Tyler Cauley + Dylan Drgac/Nathan Malinovsky = goooooooood baseball team. We conclude with our top players and pitchers to watch, and our pick to punch their ticket to Appleton (at 19:40). Then we say goodbye. Thanks for listening!
